Our April issue is full of everything that will get you amped up for spending your time outside and exploring San Diego County. Check out the sexy and sassy bikini looks for this year beginning on page 16. Further your confidence for shedding those layers with our article on beauty foods (page 24) and learn tips to accessorize yourself to impress for spring on page 7. Everything fabulous about San Diego is included in our annual “Best of San Diego” issue. There will be no question as to where you should spend your next girls’ night out! I suggest having sunset drinks from the excellent wine selection at the Ivy Rooftop at Andaz (Best Wine Selection winner) followed by an evening of you and your girlfriends letting loose at the hottest downtown nightclub, Fluxx (Best Girls’ Night Out winner). I did this in March with my girlfriends for a bachelorette party. It was amazing and the greatest downtown setting for the perfect girls’ night out! Make sure you make the most of this springtime sun and get out on the beach cruisers, go for a hike and get yourselves outdoors. It is time to enjoy what we have been more than blessed with here in southern California!

Wondering what’s hot in fashion for spring 2012? New York fashion week has wrapped up, the results are in and the theme dominating the runways for this season can be described in three words: feminine, feminine and feminine! Both clothing and accessories will be bursting with tribal patterns, futuristic metallics, romantic lace and big florals, just to name a few. Easy-to-carry clutches are the “it” bag. And be prepared to see a lot of super-sized jewelry this season. I’m talking about statement necklaces, stacked bracelets and the return of the earring.
Statement Necklaces One of spring’s hottest jewelry pieces is the statement necklace. Here are the top styles trending now and great ideas on how to wear them.
1 2 3
The collar necklace is extremely versatile and creates a more elegant look. These tend to be gold or silver in color with varying finishes which makes them easy to dress up or down. Floral necklaces made of mixed materials are fun and flirty. Pairing them with a strapless dress or silky blouse will surely be noticed, and complete this ultra-feminine look. Go primal with tribal-inspired necklaces paired with plain tanks and maxi skirts to create a more natural and simplistic look.
The Bag This season, clutches of all shapes, sizes and shades will reign supreme in the bag department. From small and boxy to oversize envelopes you can’t go wrong. When choosing a clutch for any occasion it’s important to keep the look between apparel and accessories balanced.
1 2 3
Formal occasions require a more sleek and sophisticated bag. Choose neutral colors, such as black or metallics in gold or silver because they pair nicely with most dresses and suits. Keep it classy with materials such as satin, velvet or sequins. A night out with your girlfriends is all about having fun. A big floral print or bright color block clutch will liven up any solid dress and mood! For daytime use, functionality and simplicity is the key. Pastel hues are big this season and these colors can be carried day after day. Want a neutral shade? Try nude, blush or pale yellow.
With large jewelry and bright prints dominating this season just remember not to overdo it by mixing too many styles at once. Spring’s fashion spectrum is wide, allowing you to stay right on trend regardless of your personal style.
BONUS TIP: This spring is all about bold! Bold prints and bold statements. Rock a bright lip or shoe to enhance your look.

QUALITY SOCIAL IT’S HAUTE IN HERE.
hat more could you want on a Friday night downtown than a bar… with food! Quality Social has the comforts of a neighborhood watering hole with the panache of a downtown club. From classy furnishings and hip music to farm-to-table dining and high caliber libations there are many reasons to detour from the busy streets of Fifth Avenue and frequent this gem on Sixth in the Gaslamp.
Striving to feature organic and locally grown ingredients... the majority of the food is made in-house including the charcuterie, and there is an emphasis on sustainable methods, Quality Social as a restaurant lives up to their namesake with the caliber of ingredients used. One should begin navigating the menu with the Chef’s Choice charcuterie or cheese plate. The charcuterie is flavorful meat cured in-house over a six month process. You may be offered the fennel-spiked, fun to say finnochiona, or the Toscano, blended with red wine and garlic. Other classic appetizers include the meaty duck wings and rich bacon-wrapped dates, and all condiments from ketchup to pickles are made in-house. Entrées are not to be missed as items such as Grilled California Swordfish served with black lentils and baby carrots, indicative of the local and sustainable farming methods used. The weekend brunch offers bottomless mimosas for $10 and a screen for catching up on sports. The evening vibe is distinctly urban with a DJ spinning beats to a dancing crowd and themed events in store for the future.

1 Blueberries Blueberries contain more antioxidants than any other fruit, which is extremely beneficial to our exterior beauty. Antioxidants attack the free radicals, or substances that are created within our own bodies, that naturally attack and degrade cells and thus cause aging of the skin. Blueberries are also a great source of vitamins, especially vitamin C. The purpose of vitamin C is to help the body in cell renewal, which is essential to the skin.
recipes,
2 Coconut Beauty is big business and huge amounts of please visit money are being spent daily on expensive Mandala’s beauty products. In its pure form, organic extra virgin coconut oil is an amazingly inexpenLiving Blog sive beauty aid. Due to its high level of antioxi(by Micah Skye) at dants, coconut oil applied to the skin will fight free radicals and the creation of wrinkles. Pure mandalaraw.blogspot.com coconut oil applied to the skin keeps it elastic, firm and youthful. Continuous use of the health-giving organic extra virgin coconut oil can prevent aging spots and blemishes and even improve any conditions that may exist. 3 Tea Tea (especially green tea) is a beverage that has been used in Asia for its beauty and health benefits since ancient times. Tea is now commonly known to promote heart health and prevent cancer; however, it is also being used for its beauty benefits. Containing high amounts of antioxidants, green tea is especially known for its antiaging properties. One of green tea’s beauty benefits is that it promotes a slimmer figure. This helps your body burn calories faster and thereby lose weight. 4 Lemon The lemon is a very diverse beauty aid and this inexpensive bright fruit has excellent properties for enhancing your looks. Very simple lemon-based preparations you can do in your own kitchen will bring an amazing transformation in your beauty regimen. Lemon also aids in keeping you fit and healthy as well as its use for beauty.
5 Strawberries The bright and heart-shaped fruit does wonders to the teeth and skin. It’s a natural exfoliant that takes care of flaky dead cells on top of the skin. The salicylic acid in it makes a good combatant for acne and blackheads. Moreover, the antiseptic and skin lightening properties make it a star for the skin. A strawberry skin mask made by mashing up a few strawberries to a pulp is the best skin remedy. 6 Chili peppers Chili peppers are one of nature’s best foods for you, as they have several ways of helping you stay beautiful. Any woman who is trying to burn fat or lose weight needs chili peppers in her diet. The active ingredient in chili peppers, capsaicin, is the key here. It’s a thermogenic, which means that it amps up the body’s ability to burn fat. Chili peppers also help to fight aging in your skin. Two nuclear transcription factors (parts of human cells) play a role in averting cancer and keeping skin young. Chili peppers have capsaicin, which works to block the nuclear transcription factors from activating in the first place. 7 Chocolate Chocolate is not only a sweet delicacy, but also a natural beauty solution for various skin problems. In fact, it has become the latest craze in the beauty industry. The skin-softening properties of chocolate come directly from its major content, the cocoa butter. Chocolate is extremely rejuvenating and refreshing for the skin. The antioxidants also known as anti-aging allies in dark chocolate help to avoid and prevent the free radicals from damaging the skin’s elastin, collagen and various other proteins. 8 Olive oil People living millennia ago in ancient Greece took for granted that extra virgin olive oil, all by itself, is one of the best beauty secrets. In addition to being a natural, hypoallergenic way to moisturize skin, extra virgin olive oil has the added advantage of providing strong antioxidants, like Vitamins A and E, which help to repair and renew skin that has been damaged from overexposure to sun, air pollution and other modern-day environmental hazards, like cigarette smoke and fast food. These antioxidants have the natural ability to stimulate cells and return skin to a firmer, smoother and healthier state.
bonus tip: Carry a bottle of water at all times. Constant hydration is the key to great skin!

ways
w a r rd o f g n i r p s to
your love life
Spring is in the air, and so is love. Just like your house, relationships need a good spring cleaning as well. So in with the new and out with the old. Give your love a boost this spring with these 5 tips! By Jillian marie Dyer
1 Clear some space
Take action and stop waiting around for love to find you. End a long boring winter by adding some spice to your life. Break out the calendar and start knocking off items off your bucket list, take some risks and make memories with friends. If you are constantly busy and working non-stop, this is your moment to bust out of your cocoon at least once a week and transform into a social butterfly. The more people you meet, the closer you will be to finding the man of your dreams.
2 access the mess
You can’t have a committed relationship if you don’t know what you are looking for. Whether you are in a relationship or playing the field, make a list of what you are seeking, what brings you happiness and discover what your weaknesses and strengths are. Take control of your relationships and make positive changes rather than getting stuck in old routine patterns. Try dating outside your comfort zone and not having such high expectations. If you normally go for the muscle meatheads, test drive something with a little more intelligence. Remember, you are looking for Mr. Right, not Mr. Perfect.
3 Take out the trash
Yes, moving on is a very difficult process, but now is the time to clear the air. Don’t let your past hold you back and keep you from living your life and future opportunities. So start by cleaning out your closet by replacing the exboyfriend’s t-shirts with something more sexy and feminine like lingerie. Next, go through your little black book (or these days your Blackberry) and delete all the contacts that you have no interest in talking to, like the ones who have broken your heart. Finally, have a beach bonfire burning of all past relationship artifacts such as photos, concert tickets and letters. If the only reason you hold on to them is for memories, then you are a fool. All they do is help you remember the good times, followed by a tearful crying session. If you need a good cry, then rent The Notebook. If you are really “meant to be together” then you will be.
4 Pull out the weeds
This spring, try having a positive attitude and lighten up your thoughts with humor. Stop wondering why he isn’t texting you back. Cease the Facebook page stalking and quit questioning if you will ever find love. Breathe and relax and just have some fun. Why waste your time on someone who isn’t into you? Surround yourself with motivating people who want to be around you and like you for who you are. Everything happens for a reason and eventually things will fall into place.
5 Splash some paint and polish
Spiff up your mind, body and soul with a makeover and by challenging yourself. Take a language course, buy an actual book that isn’t a celebrity gossip magazine, stick to healthy eating and workout habits or upgrade your appearance with a new hair style or wardrobe. It is important that you take the time to take care of the number one person in your life, yourself, because feeling beautiful on the inside and out is what it is all about.
Bonus tip: Celebrate singlehood. Get out of the house, enjoy the sun or paint the town red!

back to the
drawing board how to try a new look! By Morgan Ferrari

Fake Bake Flawless SelfTanning Liquid. Available at fakebake.com, $24.99.
It’s inexplicable yet inevitable that facets of your life will hit a plateau during its rollercoasterlike behavior. Being without exemption, even your makeup look will one day become routine too. If you are one of many who may have let experimentation and change take a back seat these past few years then read on for some helpful tips to pull you out of your slump. Speak up. It may sound simple, but just talking about making a change to your daily makeup routine or other beauty products may lead you to the steps of change. Women today think neutral tones are the only way to keep it simple and enhance their look, but look for your eye color complement for a fresh way to make your eyes pop.
attract
Blue. If your eyes are blue then your complement color is orange. Try coppery or golden shadows, as well as peach to make your eyes pop.
Erox Body Spray. Available at erox.com, $35.95
Green. This eye color is best enhanced by red. Red itself is a strong color, so hues that have a red base work just as well. Find variety with shades of pinks, purples, red-browns or even a green similar to the color of your eye. Try any of these colors to brighten your green color. Hazel. This unique eye color has the ability to bring out both brown and green colors. If you’d rather bring out the green in your hazel eyes, simply use the complementary colors. Brown. Brown eyes have the ability to wear darker color including shades of grey and silver. If your eyes are more of a golden brown, then plums and purples will serve you best since they’re opposite from yellow on the color wheel.
Cleanse Avocado Olive & Basil Shower Gel by Crabtree & Evelyn. Available at crabtree-evelyn.com, $20.00.
One of the easiest ways to break the cycle is by switching brands. Just the fact that you’re using an entirely different line will feel like an accomplishment and encourage you to push your experimental boundaries. There are so many amazing lines that go overlooked. Some of our favorite color lines are Makeup Forever, NYX, Nars, Loreal and many others. A few of our favorite other products to recommend are Fake Bake Flawless Self-Tan liquid, Avocado, Olive & Basil revitalizing Bath & Shower gel and a new body mist, erox. It’s ok to live by the mantra “baby steps.” If you’re only able to manage step one, don’t be discouraged, it’s one step further than before. Remember all it takes is that first step.
did you know?: As many as 15 different genes have been associated with eye color inheritance. APRIL 2012 //
