June is Adopt a Shelter Cat month and Foxxy, a Norwegian Forest Cat mix is just one of 150 cats who are waiting for their forever home at the Arizona Humane Society. This regal 5-year-old strives to maintain her gorgeous appearance and prefers a life of luxury. Foxxy likes to perch on an available lap and have her silky, smoky colored fur coat brushed- she rolls around and purrs readily with delight. She is much too distinguished to fool around with cat toys and would rather help her owner study or work on the computer. She is an excellent office assistant. Her requirements for her new home are simple: Endless love. A warm lap. A friendly feline roommate. Worshipful adoration for her sassy diva-ness. And if there must be a dog, he should be completely subservient to her every wish at ALL times. Foxxy is available NOW at the Petique Retail and Adoption Center located at the Biltmore Fashion Park. Her adoption fee is only $20 and includes her spay surgery and vaccines. For more information ask for animal ID number A435508.

Boutiques on Wheels: The Future of Fashion ...Imagine a beautiful, clear day, standing in front of a mirror, trying on a chic blouse in the dressing room of your favorite boutique. You hear the birds singing a song and the sun kissing your skin through the window of that dressing room. Now imagine that your favorite boutique is actually a truck parked on one of the busiest streets in Los Angeles. This has actually become a reality for the fashion-forward shoppers of California, as well as for the owners of LA’s first official mobile boutique, Le Fashion Truck. This reality was dreamed up by business partners Stacey Steffe and Jeanine Romo and began the association between fashion trucks and their company. They began their business venture after meeting at a LA arts and crafts market in 2010, and started Le Fashion Truck after knowing one another for only six months. Being the first official boutique truck in LA was a mixture of convenience and brilliance, as Steffe and Romo were seeking an easier way to transport their merchandise to different events. Tired of hauling their products in their cars, setting up booths, then taking them down each week at flea and famers markets, they began developing an idea that would help change the way people shopped. Steffe, who was vending at a farmer’s market in the summer of 2010 recalls the moment the innovative idea came to her. “…One day the Kogi truck (a popular LA food truck) rolled through with their large crowd of followers,” Steffe said. “…I looked around at the young crowd that had gathered and honestly, I was just in awe at the mobile business model. I went home that night and started writing out notes for a store-on-wheels concept and told Jeanine about it a couple weeks later.” Steffe stated that the public was excited, surprised, and a bit confused when she and Romo opened their truck for business. Although they had been teasing on social media of the idea of a fashion revolution in LA, it wasn’t until their opening night that people were able to see what this “revolution” really was. The ladies carry the latest trends in fashion and regularly receive new merchandise delivered directly to the location they are stationed at that day. In addition to carrying emerging designers, they also embrace styles that vary from girly to classic to edgy. Customers should also be excited to know that they carry a wide range of sizes from XS to 3X. They also feature unique jewelry pieces that are designed and created by Romo. If you do not live around the LA area, fear not: Le Fashion Truck may be closer than you think. The ladies plan on taking their signature pink truck on the road, “if our truck will make it,” says Steffe. For more information about upcoming events and locations or to shop online, visit their website at:

Extraordinary, if there is anything you can expect from this young photographer, it is uniqueness. Simao Salvador Melo has been a freelance photographer in the Phoenix-Metro area for about a year now and he has proven that art and beauty can be found in even the oddest of places. With a European flare, the photographer doesn’t play around when it comes to creating questionable art. “I want people to look at my work and think, what the heck is that? That’s weird.” says the Rhode Island native. The self-proclaimed oddball of Arizona, this photographer considers himself more of an artist ‘I like to create art, and my camera just so happens to be a tool I use.” Shooting high-fashion and video editorials. Simao pulls inspiration from everywhere; with an eclectic style he uses his art to tell elaborate stories of his love for fashion. Shooting for Fashion-Faces before Simao decided to create a high fashion editorial to show his appreciation for gaunt and edgy styles. Brianna was the perfect muse for the shoot, with an androgynous look she was perfect for captivating the essential high-fashion European look. Blending feminine pieces with hard lines and accentuating makeup, Simao tells a story about a fashion-savvy woman, who’s constantly on the go. Life keeps evolving her style. by Geo Baddsyde. Sarah Dahl, Fashion Artist and Designer

FF // How do you manage your time to still consider your professional career and hobbies?

“mineral archive” © sarah dahl 2013 all rights reserved http://sarahdahl.com

FF // Considering the many facets that you do, what three would you say that you specialize in? SD // I consider myself to be a fairly well-rounded creative person, mostly in the visual arts. But since we tend to categorize ourselves with our careers, I would say I am an illustrator, fashion designer and graphic designer. Ideally, most of my work engages these different but related skills, as that in turn tends to make the work have a dimensional and unique character. FF // How long does it usually take for you to complete a project from start to finish? SD // Just as there are vast variations of projects and techniques, the amount of time to produce them also varies widely. You have to feel or visualize it first, the project’s solution will come to you faster, smoother and be stronger as a result. However, since we are talking about commercial arts and business, you also need to develop your ability to give an accurate prediction or educated estimate of how much time and money it will take to create something someone is paying for. But this all comes with experience. 116

JUNE2013

SD // It’s so important to have as much balance in life as possible, which is so easily forgotten in the fast-paced, technology-driven world we live in today. Working in large cities, in competitive creative fields, I too feel my generation’s self-imposed pressure to “succeed” during our youth. Then I take a breath and look for perspective or the bigger picture. I remind myself to only take on each project, hour and day as they come. And I consciously remember to play, explore, experiment, to find inspiration and joy. Which, incidentally, allows you to work more productively when you return to it. Progressive, smart companies know this and practice it, and are much more lucrative for it. FF // What inspired you to get into fashion design? SD // Being exposed to what fashion designers were doing in the late 1990’s and 2000’s, well let’s just say that was enough. I knew what I wanted to do. FF // Are the elements of fashion illustration similar to digital art? SD: Fashion illustration can be digital art, and digital art can be fashion illustration. They are both commercial art and are intended to marketed, to be a product that sells or to sell a product. But commercial art is also barometer on our times, and if done well, can be considered “art”. It doesn’t matter how art is produced, how much it cost to fund it, what materials were used: fabric, pixels, paint, found objects... what matters is, what is it saying of substance and will it still be relevant years from now? I can think of a lot of fashion art, digital art and illustration that have been made years ago but still have something to offer us today. An example of that are the fashionable Art Nouveau ad posters by illustrator Alphonse Mucha —they sell everything from rum to plays, yet I’d consider them to be art, as well commercial art. They are a snapshot of what was stylish and appealing to consumers —a century ago!

FF // What people throughout the industry to you admire?

FF // What are some of your upcoming projects?

SD // My creative heroes vary, and not all of them are still alive, but here are a few: Ann Demeulemeester, Rei Kawakubo, Drew Struzan, John Alvin, Miuccia Prada, Kate Moross, Jean Paul Gaultier, Gustav Klimt, Issey Miyake, Linda Fargo, Tim Walker, Hussein Chalayan, David Downton, Alexander McQueen...

SD // I have deadlines in print and web art direction looming. Fashion design is very seasonally busy, but I find illustration and graphic design is demanding yearround. I welcome all of it. Working with my agents and my clients, and delivering a quality product that did not exist just a short while ago—well, that brings me a lot of creative fulfillment. It’s why I do what I do.
