TAKE ME HOME | UNITED STATES
http://azhumane.org
Bunny is a scruffy 4-month-old who loves one thing above all others… playing. She’s 25-pounds of awkward, clumsy, goofy, silly, adventureseeking puppy and watching her race around a grassy yard is delightful yet exhausting. Her previous owner wasn’t able to afford to care for a puppy and toys were limited. So when shelter workers at the Arizona Humane Society gave the curious pup a stuffed dinosaur toy, first she barked at it, then pawed it, then picked it up and when she make it squeak... well let’s just say it opened up a whole new world of fun for the pooch. She loves toys and the more the better because it keeps this fun-loving pup out of mischief (Airedale terriers are extremely active). Good news is the breed is exceptionally smart and with a little patience, some exercise and a boat load of toys she will be a wonderful companion for someone who enjoys a spirited, animated friend.
Bunny is available NOW at the Sunnyslope Adoption Center located at 9226 N 13th Avenue in Phoenix. Her adoption fee is $160 and includes her spay surgery and vaccines. For more information call 602-997-7585 x2045 and ask for animal ID number A457558.

ron Bermudez, a 20-year-old Philadelphia PA based fashion designer. Bron’s real name is Brandon Bermudez, but he wanted something different, something edgy, so he used his middle name as his first and that’s how Bron Bermudez was born in 2011 when he first started designing. Bron Bermudez created the Black Leather Collection to catch people’s attention, to actually show his competition and audience that he is a focused and committed designer. His main focus for designing this collection was to build his first portfolio and start filling out college application in New York City. Bron Bermudez is a self-taught fashion designer; he never had one class in tailoring, so with this he wants to inspire the people who are also in his shoes. Bron Bermudez will continue to keep doing great designs, this is just the beginning. Stay Tuned.

“ ’ve been modeling for six years now, am published in over 50 magazines and working with Michael Luna was one of the best modeling experiences of my life.” He not only is professional, nice and a great photographer, but he is one of the few that actually left me with hope about pursuing a modeling in Arizona. Everyone says all the work is in LA and New York, but Michael Luna makes it so very possible to believe you make it here. Many look at modeling and assume we are just a pretty face, standing there smiling and trying to look pretty... Oh, how wrong you are... It’s acting. It’s expressing happiness when you’re sad, looking mad when your scared (etc..). If you’ve never modeled before or have been modeling for a long time, Michael will help bring out those emotions and capture them to share with the world. At first meeting Michael Luna, not only was I honored to meet him after seeing his work for years, but I was surprised at how he made me feel so comfortable and safe at our first shoot. Even after the many photographers I’ve met, only a very small group have I felt so close with. How he what he does so well, I do not know.. But he must have been born with it. Definitely one of my all time favorite photographers.” - Briana Rambo

Interview by fashion designer, Stacey Blanchet of Blanchet Designs
hat makes a QUEEN? In my opinion, it is a woman who is smart, classy, sophisticated, ...beautiful inside and out. She completely commands the audience’s attention. Off the magazine pages and into my life stepped Queen Katarina Van Derham. Could she be my muse? As a designer, my mind went wild when I saw her photo shoots. I knew immediately I wanted her to wear my designs, and for her to wear my clothes in photo shoots. And, so my quest began. Our business relationship over the past year developed into a friendship. What I learned in part is that to design for a QUEEN, the garment MUST be a statement piece with edge and class. No easy task even for a seasoned designer. My goal in interviewing Katarina is to bring to life the fantasy off the pages and make her real. You are will discover the smart, funny, classy, sassy and sophisticated Katarina Van Derham, or, as I like to call her “Queen Katarina”.

SB - For those who do not know your story, can you tell us how you began as a model and how many magazines you have graced the cover of? KVD - I was discovered when I was working as a waitress in Santa Monica, California. I had always dreamed of becoming a model but growing up in Europe where the modeling norms are very different than in the U.S., I never thought I could become one. After taking my first test shots, I could not believe that was me. I loved the shots! The photographer who discovered me took me to a modeling agency and my career literally skyrocketed. In just a few years I had over 50 magazine covers and 17 TV commercials under my belt. SB - How do you feel about being called ‘One of Maxim’s most beautiful women in the world’? KVD - Haha! It is flattering when you’re a young girl but as you get more mature you realize it is just someone’s perception and there is no universal truth. But I always appreciate nice compliments. SB - What doors has your beauty opened for you that you feel would not have been opened otherwise? KVD - When I lived in Europe my looks actually closed many doors so coming to Los Angeles and learning that as long as I am “young, beautiful and healthy” all the doors are open for me, was nice. But it took me a few years to get it and really except it. I was able to meet the top people in Hollywood’s industry and even got to date my celebrity crush. I would never come even close to these people if I didn’t model. SB - You spent two years studying Business at Oxford University. Why did you feel that was important? KVD - My dad was a politician and a judge before he retired so I got the intellectual side from him. I have always loved going to school and still today I feel the need to learn something new. I studied at Oxford during the last two years of my high school so I graduated from both just a week apart. The business project I was working on during those two years won a school competition, then a national one and also took the third place in the European competition. What was the project? Processing of raw cotton. lol

SB - In starting your magazine ‘Viva Glam’, what are the cores principals that you feel are needed for success in the magazine business? KVD - Don’t sell out your vision and go with your gut. That’s at least my experience so far since I’ve been in the publishing industry for less than 2 years. I’ve figured out why magazines are not selling well anymore. It is not what people think it is. It is not the internet. Women still prefer a hard copy magazine versus an online magazine. It is the concept of putting celebrities on the cover that doesn’t work anymore. The world is tired of seeing celebrities everywhere: TV, Reality shows, Tabloids, Magazines, Ads etc… SB - What makes ‘Viva Glam’ different than all the other lifestyle magazines out there? KVD - We are a lifestyle magazine that focuses not only on the outer beauty but also on the inner beauty. We are the only magazine that covers all the areas of lifestyle such as beauty, fashion, travel, fitness, food, health etc…. We are also the only magazine that focuses on highlighting vegan, cruelty free and organic brands. We shoot 90% of our own content which you won’t find anywhere else. We have our own supermodels and we don’t follow trends that Vogue sets although we mention them. We set our own trends and feature timeless fashion that will never go out of style and fits every woman. SB - What did you learn about the magazine business that you were not anticipating? And, what advice would you have for someone out there who wants to start a magazine?

KVD - When I started I already had lots of skills that having a magazine requires so it was nice to utilize them and put them all under one roof. I’ve done everything from being a model, graphic artist, art director, PR person, makeup and hair stylist etc… Nothing really surprised me. The advice I would give anyone who wants to start a magazine is don’t start it without a good chunk of financial investment. You’ll need it more than you think. SB - You are launching a beauty line? Why, and what are the down sizes of it? And, what is really needed to succeed against all other products on the market? KVD - So far I only launched my eyelash line KAT lash on kvdbeauty.com. I did it more-less to test the market and to see how the whole e-commerce works. But what ignited my idea was the trend of mink eyelashes. Learning the fact that minks get skinned alive just for fake eyelashes and manufactures labeling them as cruelty-free made me want to raise awareness. As a beauty expert I naturally would love to have my own line of products but it will have to wait till the magazine is where I want it to be first. KVD - We live in the social media world now so you need to build your social network and grow it to very high numbers so when you have products you’ll have the audience to sell to. Otherwise it’s very hard to start a line without any celebrity endorsement or YOU being the face with millions of followers. And you have to be very hands on in order to compete.

SB - You also bring your social feelings into your magazine and follow being a vegan with everything that you do. How important do you think that is when mixing your feelings with business?
SB - Clearly your beauty has opened doors but your brains have made you an empire. What are the skills sets that you feel are needed for a man or woman who wants to have and run an empire?
KVD - It is very important and it should be. We are humans with feelings and just because we do business it doesn’t mean we have to be cruel and cutthroat. Society is tired of the corporate greed and we’ve entered a new era where compassion is playing a huge factor in business. In fact, some of the most successful companies have made their millions by having their driving force compassion and ethics. SB - You have tackled the modeling world, publishing world and now entering into the acting world with a new movie coming out? Why did you want to get into acting and what made you want to do this movie as your first introduction into the business on a big scale?
KVD - First you have to become pretty much obsessed with your vision, goal and dream and when it becomes a reality and becomes your business, you have to live it and breathe it. I don’t have any hobbies anymore, I only work. And when I go on a vacation, I bring the camera equipment with me and turn it into a photo shoot and work. It takes lots of determination and focus to start and run any serious business. It takes lots of learning, struggles and facing many obstacles so you have to have a good stamina.
KVD - Actually, I was in the acting world from 2003 till 2012, before I started VIVA GLAM magazine. You could say I’m a retired actress, lol. But sometimes in life when you just let go and stop trying, that’s when things come to you. Director Steve Fawcett saw my photo in one of the magazines and asked the casting director to find me and have me come for the audition. It took him 2 weeks to convince me to take the role of Cheryl in the movie. Unbelievable and return to acting for one more time. I think I’m a natural actress because I’m an artist so acting is not too hard for me. But the reason why I never continued pursuing it is because I never liked the roles I got offered. I had a hard time playing trashy characters and didn’t find any reward in it. It wasn’t fun. And as I say: “If it isn’t any fun, don’t do it!” SB - What are your goals for the next five years with the modeling, publishing and acting business? KVD - In 5 years I will be over 40 so not sure about modeling and acting. But with VIVA GLAM I am hoping to become a powerful brand which makes a difference in many people’s lives around the world.
SB - What did you have to give up along the way to succeed in your business? KVD - I had to leave my family back home and move across the globe. That was the hardest one and still is. But I would never succeed if I stayed in Slovakia. SB - As a woman and a business woman, what is most important in your life? KVD - LOVE. Because if you’re able to do ONLY things that you love, if you surround yourself with ONLY people you love and if you think ONLY of things you love, your life will be in a complete abundance and that’s what brings happiness. SB - To be able to carry the title ‘QUEEN’ you must be able to wear it well. You must always function at a high level. Only the strong survive. Katarina has proven over time that it takes a lot more than outer beauty to be successful. She has answered the age old question. Can you have beauty and brains? I say with absolute certainty “YES”. In my opinion Katarina Van Derham shows us how it can be done. Bravo Ms. Van Derham. We can’t wait to see what you do with the next 40 years of your life. I for one will be watching the ‘QUEEN’!

talian, versatile, and elegant, are a few words that describe model, Simona Agostini. Agostini started modeling at very young age. After being chosen for the international children’s wear fair, Pitti Bimbo, her career in the fashion industry never stopped. Her slender figure and graceful proportions has boosted her career, and she works as a fitting model for some of Italy’s most famous brands. “Working with designers has been such an inspiring and creative experience. I learned the secrets behind a collection, and breathed so much beauty and talent,” Agostini stated. Thanks to direct contact with designers, her long legs have graced the doorways of elite establishments in fashion capitals like Paris, New York, and Milan.
From the runway to print, Agostini has been featured in fashion shows, international magazines, and books. Taking advantage of her experience in the industry, Agostini travels around Europe working as fashion trainer for the prestigious luxury brand, GUCCI. She continues her modeling by pursuing personal projects and collaborating with talented photographers. Just finishing a feature in Photo France, Agostini states, “I never just model or pose; I interpret the moment. Transferring my personality, love for dance, and creativity, is very important to make each shoot an experience.” An ex-boyfriend nicknamed her “spaghetti legs”… could this be the name of her future fashion line?

FASHION WEEK REPORT | UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
Phoenix Fashion Week -Day Two odels paraded down the runway at Phoenix Fashion Week day two clothed in everything from crisp leather blazers designed for the modern day gentleman to classically silhouetted dresses for the modern day career woman. Both established and emerging designers debuted their up and coming collections to a chic and anticipating audience at the Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale, Arizona. Established designers included Gents, JHaus, and Paulie Gibson, as well as emerging designer of the year 2012, Los Angeles based Bri Seeley. Emerging designers included dpc by Dora Yin, Herbert Victoria, Proverbs by Efua, and Stephanie Gentry. Gents, a Los Angeles based brand specializing in fine caps and men’s apparel, opened the show with its casual men’s collection. Gents highlighted its specially item, the baseball cap, along with leather blazers, pants, and casual comfy tees. This presentation was made unique by the presence of the Google Glass, which several models wore down the runway. Beverly Hills based JHaus lived up to their slogan, “premium denim inspired by American roots,” with models strutting down the runway in denim and basic tees. In addition to your average jeans and shorts, the ultimate form of business casual was introduced in the form of denim pencil skirts and trousers. Paulie Gibson presented bold designs for the man who desires to stand out from the crowd. Dress shirts in shades of cobalt, blue, and teal stood out from the otherwise gray and black color scheme. Bold patterns (think large flowers and plaids) covered dress shirts and pants alike. Los Angeles based Bri Seeley, Phoenix Fashion Week’s Designer of the Year, showcased “wearable contemporary garments influenced by vintage silhouettes.” The collection was romantic and ladylike, with full skirts and high necklines. Dresses and separates were composed of standout combinations like emerald and mint, as well as romantic pinks and the occasional army green. Emerging designer dpc by Dora Yin showcased “timeless style for day and night.” Notable pieces included loose fitting dresses and a dress that can be transitioned from day tonight with just a movement of the sleeves from the shoulder down to the arm. Herbert Victoria’s line had a tribal flair, with bold, colorful patterns and geometric designs. Dresses had unique necklines, popped collars, and off the shoulder sleeves, and were accompanied by jewelry by Melis and handbags by Beautiifash. Dubai-based Proverbs by Efua debuted a collection with a cause. The brand donates 20% of its profits to stop human trafficking. The collection, though fairly simple, displayed full skirts and dresses in bold colors. Stephanie Gentry closed the show with her dreamy women’s collection, a stark contrast to the rigid yet casual opening Gents collection. Models floated down the runway clothed in ethereal lavender dresses and silky white pants. The diversity of the collections at Phoenix Fashion Week day two made the show interesting for every fashion show attendee. Both the established and emerging designers presented collections that will surely emerge as popular collections in the future. By Clarissa Burt with Julia Wristen

FASHION WEEK PHOTOGRAPHY | CANADA
Ella and Lyn won 1st place in the Hair and Fantasy Competition in March of 2013 at WCFW and were invited back to showcase again this fall.
estern Canada Fashion Week is the longest running fashion week in Alberta, now the third-largest in Canada. Our primary mission is to create a community, not only a community of designers, but a community that unites all those who are involved in the fashion and beauty industries. This community further encompasses the media and production staff. We firmly believe that our emphasis on community makes for a one-of-a-kind event. We are unique among fashion weeks around the world, because we are not only a platform for established designers, we are also an inhouse incubator for supporting new talent. For this reason, we have created contests like our emerging designer contest, and we are always evolving new methods of discovering and supporting talent.

ur emerging designer night is very important, as it offers the opportunity for an amazing launch for the careers of young designers, providing them with the chance to produce and put together their own shows and work alongside established, internationally acclaimed designers. Our emerging designer contest has been highly successful, discovering and supporting the careers of many young designers from design colleges all over western Canada. However, our focus is not only on new talent. We offer all our designers, including those wellestablished, an extremely low cost to participate that nevertheless provides them with a sophisticated stage and set-up; world-class production; excellent local, Canada-wide, and international media coverage, and a talented photography team capturing their shows. Western Canada Fashion Week is local but with a global vision, enabling our designers to work locally but reach larger markets.

Its not a very nice phrase but its used so often. It made me feel like I’m not a whole person, and never will be. Being mixed race I used to not know where I fit in. I was neither white nor black so I never felt accepted. Some pathetic people thought it was funny to call me names like ‘zebra,’ ‘creamy,’ and all types of other horrible things. But now, I have overcome all of this. Now I love who I am as well as my background. With things you can’t change, like race, you just have to accept and own it! There’s always going to people out there putting you down, but you just have to carry on and let them wallow in their ignorance. - Connie Chadwick

My story would have to be just going through a period of time in school where I just spent all my time feeling like I couldn’t fit in with all the pretty and confident girls. They would call me things like ‘weirdo’ ect., because I didn’t make a great effort to conform. The jumped at every opportunity to put me down about my appearance, beliefs and things I said. Even things as silly as my hair colour. This came from a group of people that I considered friends. When I started to model, I gained confidence but they told me that I lied about it. I was always the one ‘friend’ in that group that was walked over and I always slipped under the radar and felt quite insignificant. I now, however, have a very supportive group of friends and a great family who are always there for me. The names don’t affect me in any way any more. - Leah McCormick
Well since I’m Polish, I got bullied quite a lot and racist comments were coming towards me like “you steel our homes, jobs and food” as you can imagine it wasn’t nice. Since i always tried to stand up for myself i got called a show off just because i was trying to break through and not give up. This is my story. - Dominika Gorywoda

Judged I spent most of my teenage years feeling lost, resentful and excluded from the status quo. Not only did I come from a very humble background, which was often the joke of more privileged kids in my class, I also looked different due to my mixed heritage. Automatically, I felt subject to scrutiny due to my difference, but this also fuelled me with an overwhelming desire to prove people wrong. I was the underdog, no one at school really had high expectations of me, why would they? The sheer fact that I lived in one of the most deprived places in my area was enough to eclipse the fact that I may have possessed some form of talent. I worked relentlessly hard at school, I admit, maybe some of it was to attract attention (and it did), but I was determined to challenge a stereotype and to show others that you cannot judge a person based on circumstance, for we are all different with something unique to offer. You have two choices; to become inspired by your situation or to become a victim of it, we should place a higher value on ourselves and to remember that they will only win if you let them. - Ekatrina De Rossi

Freak I don’t have that many, but I guess the one that affected me the most is “freak.” I’m tattooed and its most visable to others. Its not my face or anything, but I constantly get stared at and judged. I’ve had it shouted at me when I’ve been out with my son and I was treated like an outcast at a mothers’ and toddlers’ group. No one bothered to speak to me or even acknowledge my wee boy. It hurt. As all my tattoos have a story and meaning behind them. I know now I’m unique. This makes me who I am and what I’ve been through. I let people stare and whisper now. At least when I’m older, my son can tell people, “my mummy had a colourful life.” To me everyone is beautiful. xx - Saranne Coates
Ok well, when I was younger, I was always called ‘big ears’ and ‘lanky.’ I even got spat on by the boys up around my area. Another time I was held by four boys, got hit and kicked by two sisters who live beside me. I was bullied right up until year 11. Now I am moving into year 12, and hopefully everything changes for my last year so that I can focus. Being bullied I never worked my hardest. - Sophie Campbell

harpe eyed readers may observe that I have made no mention of London Fashion Week, or indeed any other fashion week! Why? the less than observant may ask! The answer is simple these events have (like the whole associated concept of branding and marketing) come to represent the law of diminishing returns, for not only do they look and sound incredibly dated, but everybody who is nobody and desperately wants to be somebody is there! The lights are on but nobody’s home! So where does this leave us? If current structures and brands look increasingly tired dated and lackluster, and indeed, far too bright loud and shiny for words! Equally there seems to be an absolute tsunami of fashion weeks, and fashion events popping up everywhere! Brighton fashion week, Birmingham fashion week! What next? An Arbour Michigan fashion week? Madison Wisconsin fashion week? El Paso fashion week? It becomes progressively more desperate and absurd, and diminishes the integrity and standing of the whole industry!

The antidote and answer is to be found in companies like the Berlin (Germany) based Trippen! For a long long time those in the know from Tokyo to London from NYC to Berlin and Shanghai to Paris, have made Trippen shoes their #1 choice when it comes to that elusive ‘coolness factor’! Look for the girl or indeed guy, with genuine style, that eye-catchingly cool arty stunningly unique yet understated look, and 99 times out of a 100 they will be wearing Trippen shoes! Trippen transcend ‘fashion’, indeed they challenge it, by having created a globally successful company (not ‘brand’! for like Pure Mind/Yohji Yammamoto/Commes des Garçons etc, they hate the word!)! To be seen wearing Trippen shoes is to be instantly recognized as someone who knows what style is really about! And this is what defines the ‘new cool school’! Because Fashion is for people who don’t know! Style is for people who do! Trippen designs are beautifully made unique and extremely quirky! The word ‘craftsmanship’ springs to mind! Additionally even the more extravagant designs are very comfortable indeed! For anybody who seriously cares about style and taste, these are the shoes to be seen in! And of course you need the right clothes! Yohji Yamamoto Y’s, Commes des Garcons, Pure Mind etc, all will work perfectly, and guarantee that you never end up looking like Victoria Beckham or some other dodgy celeb from the planet that style and taste forget!

So for all of you cool arty style obsessed hipsters out there in the USA and elsewhere! On that next trip to Europe, better jump aboard that Trans Europe Express and head straight for Berlin, which along with London, Beijing and Tokyo, is the coolest city in the world right now! The Berlin Trippen store is beautifully designed, an experience in itself in fact, but be warned you will most definitely max out your credit card and exceed your excess baggage but it will be worth it, because like all truly great designs Trippen are unique pieces of art, they never age! And both second hand and back catalogue models fetch big prices on ebay! Another tip, is the Trippen outlet store in Berlin…. where you can find a huge selection, but suffer the frustration of not finding your size because they are often ‘one offs’! But when you do, the prices are unbelievable! And if you cannot manage an ultra-shopping vacation in Berlin, They also have stores and stockists around the world including the USA! My girlfriend Hong and I have been wearing Trippen for a very long time, indeed we almost never wear anything else, and spend far to much money on them, for they really are that rare thing today, utterly and irresistibly MUST HAVE! - Chris Garland, Berlin.
