SINCE THAT SUMMER NIGHT IN ’59 WHEN ROCKY COLAVITO KNOCKED IT OUT OF THE PARK AGAIN AND AGAIN, THIS CLEVELAND SPORTS FAN HAS REMAINED

ALL IN. BY WALLY NAYMON, SHOPKEEPER

BALTIMORE/WASHINGTON EXAMINER PHOTO. BASEBALL CARDS: TOPPS

The game was televised here in Cleveland—and I was a 15 year-old kid, glued to the action on the black-and-white screen of the only set in our family’s Bedford home. The season wasn’t going well for outfielder Rocky Colavito; he’d racked up just three hits in his last 28 at-bats and he was rumored to be traded soon to Boston. (At the time, it didn’t seem like a big loss for the home team.) But on June 10th it all turned on a dime, as luck often does, and by the end of that electrifying game Rocky had hit four consecutive home runs over the wall of Memorial Stadium. I was an elated kid who had scored a sports memory to last a lifetime! We all know Cleveland sports has its share of heartbreak and disappointment, but it’s these singular moments of magic, and their memory, that always keep hope alive. Like you, I was devastated when the Cavs lost in the finals earlier this year. But we’ll never forget the season they gave us, with new memories like Dellavedova’s deft defense in game two and LeBron nailing the go-ahead three in OT of game three—and we fans look ahead as optimistically as ever to the coming season. It’s what being “all in” is all about. As summer wanes, the Tribe has played 140 games, while Browns season is just underway with the Monsters close behind. We’re anticipating the most exciting season in Cavs franchise history, and along with it the most exciting fall fashion season in years. You’re favorite games will be playing on our color big screen all season long, and if we’re lucky we’ll score a few sports memories together. And if not, there’s always next year. We’re Cleveland, and we’re ALL “all in.” Thanks for shopping, enjoy the magazine, and we’ll see you soon at Kilgore Trout.

FALL 2015 FASHION TIPS FOR HIM

Q:

I have a perfectly good winter coat from last year; will it work this season?

It probably will. Since menswear designers believe in investment dressing, they’re usually careful not to change styles dramatically from one season to the next. That said, one coat no longer fits all occasions or all lifestyles, so you might want to consider alternating among several different styles with different functions. Options include a wool or cashmere topcoat for dressing up, a three-quarter-length wool coat for business, a leather jacket for looking cool and a quilted down parka (or vest ) for activewear and maximum warmth. Many of today’s fabrics are also specially treated to be waterproof and heat-retentive: come in and we’ll show you a great assortment. (And check out our outerwear fashion shoot in this issue!)

Q:

What’s the correct length for a modern man’s pants? My girlfriend is complaining that I’m wearing my pants too short (I recently had my tailor shorten them all) but I often see models in magazines with socks showing. Who’s right? Like most things in life, it’s not black and white: European designers are showing pants shorter than American designers and fashion experts continue to debate length. Our opinion: because pant styles today are slimmer than they were a few seasons back, pant legs worn too long tend to “accordion” from ankle to calf, a truly unattractive look. The most flattering length has the bottom of the pant leg just caressing the top of the shoe, with no creases down the pant leg and no breaks at the bottom. If your socks or skin are visible, the pants are too short.

Q:

What’s up with the flowers I’m seeing guys wear on their suit lapels?

Lapel flowers, lapel pins, tie bars, cuff links, wrist jewelry, pocket squares, scarves, bags, interesting belts—men’s accessories are increasingly important and allow you to make a personal statement about who you are. If this seems a bit out of your comfort zone, try wearing just one accessory and see what it does for you. A beaded or silver bracelet that barely shows from under your shirt cuff is a good starting point, as is a pocket square that adds a touch of class to your suit or sportcoat, or a cashmere scarf that adds a luxe touch to anything you wear. If nothing else, you need a great leather bag this fall to replace that beat-up briefcase (and to save your pockets from getting over-stuffed). Remember too that accessories make great gifts since you don’t need to deal with sizes. Pocket squares for all the guys in the office? Interesting umbrellas? The perfect business card case? Happy shopping!

Today versus yesterday

Q:

Why is it so hard to find dresses with sleeves, and how do I transition my sleeveless dresses to the colder months? Try as we might to find long-sleeves from our favorite designers, most fall and winter collection dresses are made sleeveless these days. But let’s look at the bright side: the chance to style sleeveless dresses with different toppers and accessories can actually add versatility to your wardrobe. The same dress can be worn with pumps and a blazer for work, or with a cropped leather jacket and moto boots for meeting up with friends on the weekend. Come check out our gorgeous new dresses from brands like Elizabeth and James, which pair perfectly with Veronica Beard’s cropped jackets. A basic black dress can be brightened up with a printed blazer or sweater coat, while a funky print can be toned down with a solid-color cardigan.

Q:

I have everything from skinny jeans to wide-leg trousers in my wardrobe. Right now, does anything go? Provided it fits beautifully, keeps your body shape in balance, and makes you feel great, why not? Our simple advice is keep the silhouette of your body in mind, and create some contrast with the overall look. Here are some tips: Pair leggings and skinny jeans with an untucked blouse that has volume. In the colder months, finish the look with boots worn over your pant leg. (Trend tip: the riding boot is on the wane). There’s a bit more flexibility when it comes to straight-leg pants and jeans. Throw on an

embellished cropped sweatshirt—with or without a long layering piece underneath—and sleek sneakers for a daytime casual look. Or try a tucked-in button-down and mid-heel bootie to add definition at the waist and lengthen your legs. Just stay away from your most voluminous blouses and tunics. For traditional dress pants or menswearinspired trousers, you’ll definitely want a closerfitting top. A layered look works well, so try a twinset or a blouse under a blazer. Stick to a medium or high heel, and make sure the pants are almost touching the ground after your shoe is on: not long enough that you’d step on them, but long enough that just the tip of your shoe peeks out when you walk.

keep the Cleveland chill away chic this winter? Q: HowwhilecanstillIlooking

We thought you’d never ask! We couldn’t be more excited about the new assortment of hats, scarves and gloves arriving this fall at Kilgore Trout. Come see what’s new from Yarnz, whose scarves have been favorites of ours for years. Standard Form, a new brand that fuses knit and woven fabrics, is unlike anything you’ve seen before and certainly worth checking out in person, too. Our favorite hats are from Inverni. Their cashmere skull caps and slouchy beanies come in prints and ombre, with pom-poms and without. Even if you don’t consider yourself a “hat person,” trust us, you’re going to want one.

REVOLUTIONARY STRETCH TULLE FABRIC SETS FUZZI APART IN THE FASHION WORLD. BY JILLIAN LAROCHELLE

In 1954, the Fuzzi family opened a modest knitwear factory in Cattolica, Italy. But it wasn’t until the founders’ daughter, Anna Maria Fuzzi, joined the business in 1971 that the company’s interest in fabric innovation truly began. She believed that women should be able to express themselves with the freedom and ease of a ballet dancer, and so she began to experiment. The result is the brand’s one-of-a-kind stretch tulle fabric, which is functional as well as beautiful. It can be hand-washed (and never needs dry cleaning), can be packed and unpacked without wrinkling, and miraculously stretches and conforms to flatter all body types. Moreover, Fuzzi’s tulle tops, dresses and skirts can even be hemmed at home with scissors without ever fraying. This innovative fabric drew the attention of several major design houses, and in 1983, the Fuzzi factory began producing ready-to-wear collections for Jean Paul Gaultier. The legendary designer’s avant-garde aesthetic and Fuzzi’s unmatched technical know-how made for a perfect partnership, which endured until his brand shuttered last year. However, the designer’s influence can still be found in the Fuzzi label’s embrace of color and pattern, along with its fearless use of embellishments and mixed prints. Anna Maria continues to operate as the company’s president from Fuzzi’s factory in Cattolica, while North American operations have come under the creative direction of Marianne Hicks. Recent collections have stepped up the fashion factor with the aim of attracting a more diverse female audience. (Fuzzi’s factory also produces some of the best jerseys and merino knits in Italy.) “We’re constantly thinking from a woman’s point of view. Our fabrics conform and camouflage in all the right places,” says Hicks. The fall 2015 collection is feminine yet highly wearable, dominated by dark, moody prints and tasteful embellishments including lace and fringe. Inspired by the idea of “illusion,” Hicks played with zippers that open and close to reveal underlying pattern, as well as fused garments that look like separates but are actually one piece, taking the guesswork out of fall layering. Jacquards and animal prints give merino outerwear pieces the illusion of winter-like texture, but are made in seasonless weights that work for southern climates. “We try to inject added value into each piece, so every collection includes five or six convertible items: long skirts with fold-down waists that double as maxi dresses, pants that convert to jumpsuits, or ponchos that can also be worn as scarves,” says Hicks. “We’re not a basics company. Fuzzi is designed for women who aren’t afraid to stand out.”

STRONG HORSE SENSE

“If you can get a horse to trust and follow you,” Leslie Ungar says, “you can do the same with people.” Several times each year, the Akron-based executive coach brings together CEOs, senior staff and professionals from both the corporate and non-profit worlds for her popular oneday Horsetalk: Lessons in Leadership workshop. Having shown champion Arabians for 25 years, Ungar is as comfortable and dynamic in the pasture of a bucolic farm as she is in the board room. She is recognized as a strategist, communication coach and keynote speaker for executives and their teams, as well as a writer and TV host. But she says Horsetalk was her “aha moment,” and Ungar’s excitement for this admittedly unusual method of coaching is boundless. At Horsetalk, participants discover that behavior in the pasture often mirrors behavior in real life. Horses provide immediate feedback and insight, so participants learn more quickly and move faster in their development process. Ungar likes to think of the workshop as a day of

“educational escapism” with exercises that strengthen strategic thinking, hone the use of nonverbal, vocal and visual communication, build trust and consensus—all in a relaxing, fun and safe environment. All the leadership activities happen with your feet firmly on the ground; in fact, no riding is involved. “A horse is an honest mirror to yourself—the animal doesn’t care what degrees you hold and is definitely not impressed by your job title,” she says. “It will follow you only if it identifies you as a leader.” As it turns out, horses are genetically programmed to look for leadership, and for centuries their survival depended on their ability to quickly identify and follow the right leader for their herd. “Animals sense uncertainty. A horse won’t follow a tentative person—and neither will your team or company. Always communicate confidence!” Ungar advises. OFF THE CLOCK FAHERTY OFFERS RELAXED LUXURY FOR A TIMELESS STYLE. BY ELISE DIAMANTINI

Faherty is the quintessential off-duty, weekend brand. The collection’s luxurious fabrics and modern designs keep you completely comfortable while maintaining an effortless sense of cool. Every fabrication and pattern is hand-designed by cofounder Mike Faherty, giving the collection (and you) a unique look that no one else will have. Mike, who got his start designing for Ralph Lauren’s famed RRL brand, founded Faherty with his twin brother Alex (a former investment banker) in 2013. “We think customers are more interested than ever in smaller brands,” says Alex. “Faherty has an artisanal quality to it and we want to tell our story.” That story includes ethically sourced and sustainable materials like recycled poly and organic cotton manufactured in a factory using a closed-loop filtration system that reuses water. “Alex and I grew up wearing brands like Patagonia and we always wanted to create a company that makes sustainable decisions,” reveals Mike. Fall 2015 highlights include classic brushed flannels, lightweight poplins and natural-dyed indigo shirting. “Our shirting collection has this washed, vintage vibe to complement denim,” explains Mike. “We treat our plaid tops similarly to denim, creating a nice patina. We understand the wash for making new shirts feel old but still luxurious. Lightweight fabrics are also key for fall because they give you the seasonal look without heaviness.”

The fall collection focuses on shades of blue, experimenting with various indigo hues within the plaid patterns. “It’s less about multi-colored plaids this season and more about highlights of blue within the plaid with a dusty red or cream accent,” explains Mike. They’re also offering double-faced reversible printed/solid styles that can be worn two ways, making them the perfect shirts for travel or to take you from day to night. And keep an eye out for Faherty’s mobile beach house, a traveling store that gives the brothers the chance to meet their customers, stopping at stores across America. The “beach house on wheels,” which touts eco-friendly solar panels, recycled piping and reclaimed barn wood, offers an innovative venue for customers to experience the brand in a completely different way. “We’re finding success bridging the gap between fathers and sons,” reveals Mike. “The beach house allows us to meet likeminded guys who love our product. It’s been a lot of fun.”

And such everyday staples as the familiar hooded sweatshirt, drawstring trouser or pull-on short are often rendered in opulent fabrics like cashmere, silk and micro-wool blends. They’re so extremely luxurious that it’s hard to imagine wearing them for any sport, unless it involves a remote control.

When there is any sort of disturbance in an Italian city, or merely an unexpected curve in the road, the locals are fond of calling such incidents "a manifestation.” So one might say there is a “manifestation” happening in menswear this fall–and especially next spring. Top Italian clothing brands such as Brunello Cucinelli, Isaia, Kiton, Belvest, and Brioni are taking such familiar warm weather ideas as bright color, nautical styling and even luxury leisurewear and adding their own unexpected twists. Judging by the "Living Color" theme at the latest round of Italian menswear shows, color will be at the forefront for the next several months, including on skinny, short-cropped trousers, richly-hued belts, and shirts with collars large enough to land a jetliner. YOUNG LION

WHY WE’LL ALWAYS LOVE JIM MORRISON. BY KAREN ALBERG GROSSMAN

IMAGES BY JOEL BRODSKY COURTESY OF MORRISON HOTEL GALLERY

There’s something about Jim Morrison: a haunting juxtaposition of sexuality and innocence, so brilliantly captured in Joel Brodsky’s photographs. Reflecting Morrison’s vulnerability along with his rebelliousness, Grammy-nominated Brodsky did nine album covers for The Doors. “Jim was shy,” recalls Brodsky’s widow Valerie at a recent Morrison Hotel Gallery reception in Manhattan. “I remember a photo shoot when he spent much time playing with our daughter rather than talking to adults. But when the camera was on him, he came alive. He was the quintessential showman.” Beneath the inner shyness, outer surliness and struggle with drugs and alcohol that led to his ultimate demise (in 1971 at age 27), Jim Morrison was his music: soulful, tormented, filled with longing. And it is precisely this longing (perfectly expressed in his beautiful baritone) that touches us still, even those who now reject the counterculture values of the 1960s. Despite the popularity of his music (and his poetry) with a new generation, Morrison presents a bit of a conflict for those of us beyond the era of sex, drugs, and rock ’n roll. Singer Patti Smith once put it this way: “Watching him perform the first time, I felt both kinship and contempt…” But who can argue with essayist Daniel Nester, who observes, “Just talking about Jim Morrison, I dare say, makes us old men feel young and free again.”

EXPERIENCE NEEDED

I OBSERVED THAT MY FRIENDS WERE REDIRECTING THEIR TRAVEL PLANS TOWARDS LIFE-ENRICHING EXPERIENCES.” — TREVOR TRAINA 70

Decades ago, the standard in luxury travel was staying in five-star hotels, dining in Michelin-starred restaurants, and perhaps getting a private tour of a museum, led by an art expert. These days, high-end travelers are looking not just to spend a few nights in Paris, but to indulge in once-in-a-lifetime experiences. They may still go to Paris (and even stay at the Four Seasons), but that trip might now include a front-row seat at a Paris fashion show followed by a visit to designer Coco Chanel’s atelier. Celebrity worshippers might prefer to not just attend the Sundance Film Festival in Utah, but also go to one of those buzzed-about private parties with the stars, while thrill-seeking travelers will not pass up a chance to go ballooning over the Napa Valley before sipping wine in its famous vineyards. “I observed that my friends were redirecting their travel plans towards life-enriching experiences,” says Trevor Traina, explaining why he founded Californiabased membership-site ifonly.com three years ago. “So I built a website offering some of the coolest experiences available. I’m always amazed by how broad people’s interests are, and how many people want to do things that enrich their imaginations.” To make his

I TRAVEL CONSTANTLY, GOING EVERYWHERE I CAN, ALWAYS LOOKING FOR THE MOST INTERESTING EXPERIENCES I CAN OFFER MY CLIENTS.” — VICTORIA HOFFMAN the world’s most coveted events, including the BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television) Awards, Art Basel and golf’s Ryder Cup. She will also make sure you’re lodged luxuriously no matter which experience you choose. “I make sure the tourism offices of these countries let me know about their newest and most extraordinary properties, so I can check them out personally when I visit. Whether you want to stay in a private castle, a villa or a fivestar hotel, I can make it happen.” Another excellent option for those seeking the up-close-and-personal experience is to attend local charity events that include extraordinary auction prizes. For example, as part of the Grand Auction held every September in New York City as part of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS’ annual Flea Market, you can purchase backstage visits and walk-on parts to Broadway’s hottest shows (bcefa.org), while the New York Pops, one of the world’s finest symphonies, serves up a chance to conduct the orchestra on the stage of the legendary Carnegie Hall as part of the auction held at their star-studded Birthday Gala each spring (nypops.org). You can also bid on the many auctions held on charitybuzz.com. Earlier this year, in the same day, you could place dibs on a visit to the set of Downton Abbey at London’s Ealing Studio, complete with a meet-and-greet with some of the cast members; a chance to be interviewed by talk show legend Larry King in Los Angeles (as well as receive a personalized voicemail recording); lunch with television star Mark Feuerstein on the set of his TV show Royal Pains; the opportunity to spend four days learning to be a Grand Prix race car driver in Arizona; or a ride on the Goodyear Blimp. Like many of the offerings now available to the savvy traveler, the experience will give you an all-time high.

They have spanned from that Napa Valley balloon trip to having tea in Manhattan with fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg, cooking with San Francisco-based chef Gary Danko or sitting down to a private dinner at the Doge’s Palace in Venice, Italy. The IfOnly team spends many hours in the lead-up to each trip making sure everything meets the highest standards. “Every experience is vetted before we offer it,” says Traina. “Sometimes, we send someone with the client to make sure everything goes perfectly, and our team always spends a great deal of time with clients beforehand so they know what to expect.” Moreover, while the website offers thousands of experiences at any one time, members are encouraged to come up with their own vacation-of-a-lifetime ideas. “Even if it’s not listed on the website, we can make it happen,” he promises. Victoria Hoffman, owner of conciergebyvictoria.com, is also among the entrepreneurs who specialize in making fantasy vacations a reality. Hoffman, who has an extensive background in travel and marketing, creates customized, experience-based trips for the most discerning customers using her large network of friends around the world. As a result, Hoffman can arrange anything from taking part in France’s famed Tour de France bicycle race, going on a guided tour of British artist’s Damien Hirst’s studio, visiting a monastery in Tibet overseen by the Dalai Lama, cooking with one of Europe’s greatest chefs or learning to blend your own cognac. “I travel constantly, going everywhere I can, always looking for the most interesting experiences I can offer my clients,” says Hoffman. located directly beneath the Van Allen Belt: a layer of energy-charged particles that surrounds the Earth’s polar regions, creating one of the heaviest concentrations of auroral activity in the world and making this unique spot among the best places on the planet to view the Northern Lights. This year you can stargaze in complete comfort in the Aurora Pod, created by Natural Habitat Adventures. This exclusive, custom-built structure featuring geometric glass construction (from waistheight up) is fully heated and equipped with reclining chairs for a 360-degree, unobstructed view of the celestial phenomenon. To complete the experience, naturalist expedition leaders provide information about Northern Canada’s geology, history, wildlife, cultures and, of course, the Aurora Borealis.

DASHING THROUGH THE SNOW

The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise hotel, located in Alberta's Banff National Park amid mountain peaks, the majestic Victoria Glacier and a glistening emerald lake, has worldclass skiing, a luxury spa and exceptional dining. There’s also the Brewster Stables which, during the winter months, can arrange for you to be whisked away on a truly lovely sleigh ride to the end of Lake Louise. The sleighs are traditionally styled with cozy upholstered seats and blankets to keep you warm and comfortable. You can order hot chocolate and a picnic lunch to be served during the ride. To make the day even more memorable, pop open a bottle of Champagne and toast the holidays.

PERU AU NATUREL

PERFECTLY PRIVATE

Inkaterra focuses on sustainable tourism initiatives, preserving Peru’s geography and culture with the aim of giving everyone a chance to experience the country. Part of this initiative is the Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba, a contemporary hotel designed with colonial inspiration, built in the heart of Urubamba Valley surrounded by charming villages and the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Some of the fully serviced suites offer fireplaces; others have terraces and dining rooms. All are outfitted with beautiful Pima cotton sheets, hypoallergenic pillows, free internet access, plasma screens with Direct TV, iPads, speakers and complimentary minibars. But don’t let the opulence deceive you: the rooms have natural ventilation systems, the heating system uses minimal energy, and the architecture makes the most of natural light.

If you really need to get away from it all, Gili Lankanfushi Maldives is set on the private island of Lankanfushi, a 20-minute speedboat ride from the International Airport at Malé, the capital of the Republic of Maldives. Providing ultimate privacy, the resort features just 45 luxurious overwater villas, each designed with a private water garden and sun deck, as well as a separate shower linked to your bathroom by an open-air walkway. Here, even watching a movie becomes an exceptional experience. For your viewing pleasure, a 19’ x 10’ screen is set in the open air, surrounded by dense tropical foliage. Watch favorite films with other guests, or book the “theater” as a private entertainment and enjoy a romantic dinner along with your movie.

FOLLOW THE FOOD TRAIL

In the heart of Napa Valley, the chic little town of Yountville affords an array of fine lodging, golf, art galleries, antique stores and performing arts venues. However, its main claim to fame is the gourmet mile: a collection of renowned (many Michelinstarred) restaurants. Take a stroll along this impressive stretch and discover some of the best food and wine in America. Among the most notable is Lucy Restaurant & Bar at the fashionable Bardessono Hotel, which offers sommelier-led food and wine tastings and a chance to walk through Chef Victor’s kitchen garden. (During harvest season, you can book a garden party with the chef.) Right down the street is Thomas Keller’s famed French Laundry (scheduled to reopen this fall) and his other eateries, Bouchon, Bouchon Bakery and Ad Hoc. Keller’s Kitchen Garden is nearby and you’re welcome to drop in any time. You could also join the Chocolate Club at Kollar Chocolates, where Chef Kollar creates artistic confections. And the Secret Garden at Hill Family Estate, which supplies ingredients to the French Laundry and other area restaurants, will take you on an hour-long guided tasting tour. This is clearly no place to count calories.

Michael, the always smiling general manager at Cleveland Motorsports shakes my hand and ushers me back to the detail shop. I open the driver’s door, and the cabin is exactly as I imagined: breathtaking. For the seats, Zegna has chosen a durable chevron-patterned ZegnaSilk surrounded by well-bolstered superfine Italian leather that cradles me in luxurious comfort. Looking up at the headliner where there would normally be a faux suede, I see tan and grey Donegal ZegnaSilk (which also adorns the door inserts). This is an interior that quietly whispers class. Matte open-pore walnut surrounds the dash and center console, a welcome reprieve from the typical varnished hardwoods in most luxury sedans. And behind the leather wrapped gear shift, the iconic Ermenegildo Zegna label subtly reminds me that I could be one of only 100 fortunate drivers to own this very limited edition. A guy can dream, right? Popping the trunk leads to another surprise, the Capsule Collection, a cache of hard and soft goods produced by Zegna to compliment the car: a leather suitcase and overnight duffle paired with a scarf, a picnic blanket of the same chevron silk and a pair of sunglasses for sunny Cleveland days. Oh, and 10 yards of matching ZegnaSilk fabric (enough for two custom suits). Michael and I say our goodbyes, and as I exit I imagine encountering this marvel in my garage each morning: the soft hand of the ZegnaSilk fabric, the contrast from smooth aluminum to burled walnut, the scent of luxury leather, and premium surround sound emanating from the Bowers and Wilkins audio system. But mostly, I imagine getting lost in the simple act of driving. After all, a guy can dream…
