GREETINGS FROM THE MITCHELL FAMILY

WELCOME

LOOK GOOD. FEEL WONDERFUL! Making you look great is only a part of what we strive to do every day. Our bigger-picture goal is to make you feel wonderful. When you’re in our stores and your Style Advisor brings matching shoes or a drink to your fitting room. When you drop in to say hello and share stories and adventures. When you’re shopping on our site and having your selections reserved at your store of choice. When we see you at a charity event, joining us in giving back to our community or to the world. This fall, as we savor the crisp, cool weather that is coming, we know that sometimes the world around us can get a bit chaotic. In a tradition started by our parents/grandparents, Norma and Ed, over 50 years ago, our entire staff has aimed to offer a reliable environment in which you can enjoy the gift of feeling special. We look forward to sharing our extraordinary new designer collections with you this fall, to making you feel better when you walk out of our stores than when you walked in, and to toasting the beauty all around us.

WHY A MULTI-BRAND STORE HELPS YOU BUILD A BETTER WARDROBE The best way to build a great wardrobe is with the selection, guidance and expertise of a store with multiple brands. With over 400 designers in our network, we offer an opportunity to dress all in one brand or mix many different designers to create a truly signature look. The strength of our product selections in ready-to-wear, outerwear, accessories and jewelry, combined with the guidance of Style Advisors who interact between departments, creates a uniquely collaborative environment. We believe this enables our customers to feel wonderful, knowing they are being advised carefully to make the right selections that will make them feel as great as they look.

AND THE WINNERS ARE... Greenwich International Film Festival Changemaker Honoree Gala at Richards “Red Carpet perfectâ€? was the phrase used to describe the ďŹ lm industry glitterati as they entered the beautifully transformed store on Greenwich Avenue. The guests attended this special evening as the Greenwich International Film Festival honored female humanitarians Trudie Styler, Freida Pinto and Abigail Breslin at their sold-out Changemaker Gala. “To be a part of such a strong community event is an honor and a privilege. The Mitchell family and Richards look forward to many more years of partnering with the GIFF,â€? said Scott Mitchell, co-owner of Richards. The evening focused on humanitarian efforts by these amazingly talented and compassionate women, who have worked tirelessly to make their voices heard. Their important causes, The Rainforest, National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, and Girl Rising (to aid in educating women in countries where they do not have that human right opportunity), were brought to the forefront as they accepted their awards with speeches and ďŹ lms to build awareness and continue impacting public discourse. A stunning seated dinner for 300 ďŹ lled the store with ďŹ lm industry colleagues as well as politicians such as CT Senator Richard Blumenthal, business leaders, and movers and shakers from Greenwich, NY and of course LA. Pianist and crooner Blessing Offor entertained the guests and local celebrity and talk-show host Kathie Lee Gifford was the always-compassionate and philanthropic host with comedic air. Wendy Reyes, Chairman of the Board of GIFF, said, “We were so thrilled to have our marquee event for the Greenwich International Film Festival hosted at the iconic Richards store on Greenwich Avenue. A big ‘Thank you!’ to the Mitchell family from all of us at GIFF.â€? Q

A RADIANT EVE Temple St. Clair's artistic flair Co-owner of Mitchell Stores, Chris Mitchell, and wife Ali hosted a group of friends (and fans of jewelry designer Temple St. Clair) for a private dinner at their beautiful Huntington home. Chris introduced the renowned designer as a great friend of the Mitchell family, declaring how honored he was that Temple would “spend an evening with all of us in our home.”

ART NOT JUST FOR ART’S SAKE

Temple, recently the recipient of the 2016 GEM Award for Outstanding Jewelry Design (the jewelry industry’s most prestigious honor), brought an amazing selection of her jewelry. She spoke about her passion for nature, life, travel and literature—explaining how all of these have influenced her great designs over the many years. As a special treat, Temple previewed Wings of Desire, the second chapter of her Golden Menagerie trilogy to be presented in Paris during Haute Couture 2016 at the Louvre. Her critically acclaimed nine-piece collection of Haute Couture, Mythical Creatures from the Golden Menagerie, made its debut at the Louvre Museum in Paris in January 2015. Q

@ Richards The Greenwich Arts Council celebrated the 19th year of the annual Greenwich Art to the Avenue festival. Each year in May it brings art and commerce together with the overwhelming support of the Greenwich business community, turning Greenwich Avenue into a strolling art gallery featuring local artists’ works. Mitchell Stores visual director, Kristin Tichy, curates the art and showcases their creations in exterior windows and interior displays. Q

Students in grades 9 through 12 are invited to create a work of art based on artwork shown in The Heckscher Museum of Art during the current school year. Q

ST. VINCENT’S

WOMEN AT HEART Say “Bless Your y The St. Vincent’s Hospital Women at Heart organization exceeded its goal by raising $100,000 at its annual fundraiser. Guests enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres with friends, associates and donors while helping a great cause.

Over 200 people came to Mitchells Westport to raise funds and awareness for women’s heart disease. The ďŹ fth annual event beneďŹ ted underserved women through St. Vincent’s Regina L. Cozza Women at Heart Program by providing early detection, diagnosis and proper treatment of heart disease. Crowd favorite Dave Price, journalist and currently WNBC-NY weatherman, was the auctioneer as guests bid on fabulous live and silent auction items such as Brian Cashman’s personal suite at a Yankee game and a $5,000 Mitchells shopping spree. The crowd had a sneak peek at the latest spring trends with a fashion show modeled by nurses and doctors, as Mitchells own Mary Nicolia Daoutis shared stories of connections with the disease as victim or caregiver. Always a favorite part of the evening, the guests whistled and applauded their colleagues, friends and family as they strutted and danced down the runway! Q

YOUNG PROFESSIONAL NETWORK

RETAIL THERAPY The mission of the Business Council of FairďŹ eld County’s Young Professional Network was further advanced at Mitchells last spring as its members networked while learning about fashion and business dressing.

YPN provides business, networking and volunteer opportunities and promotes the qualities that make FairďŹ eld County an attractive place for young professionals to live and work. Q Mitchells style advisors Chris Herde (right) and Mary Nicolia Daoutis spoke about trends. Below: Bob Mitchell addresses the group as Jack Mitchell and Mary Nicolia Daoutis look on.

WE ARE SHATTERPROOF Dedicated to fighting addiction Shatterproof’s founder and CEO, Gary Mendell, spoke to an interested crowd gathered at Richards to share information and plan future local events. RALPH LAUREN AL FRESCO Mitchells clients and friends enjoyed an al fresco fashion show, with colorful commentary by Ralph Lauren executive Catherine Zarella, of the Fall 2016 Ralph Lauren Collection. Large navy and white market umbrellas shaded the luncheon that featured a menu inspired by the new and coveted-reservation Polo Bar in New York. Classic dishes such as mini Ruebens, burgers, shrimp cocktail and wedge salads delighted the ladies as they shopped and took advantage of the expertise of the visiting Ralph Lauren fashion gurus. Q

FILLING IN THE BLANKS

ENCORE SHOE & HANDBAG PERFORMANCE... BRAVO! For the second year in a row, Filling in the Blanks, a New Canaan-based grassroots charity, ďŹ lled the Westport store for a fundraiser Shoe & Handbag Fashion Show and Luncheon. Co-founders Tina Kramer and Shawnee Knight invited friends and donors from FairďŹ eld County to share in the day designed to raise funds to ďŹ ght childhood hunger. The organization ďŹ lls a void for this important cause by providing needy children with meals on the weekends. In 2015 alone, Filling in the Blanks fed over 450 FairďŹ eld County children. The fun-ďŹ lled day included a strolling luncheon, shoe and bag shopping, a giving tree, a raffle and the pĂŹece de rĂŠsistance, a creatively formatted Shoe & Handbag Fashion Show with a curtained stage. The models were seen from just above the knee to the oor as they danced, pranced and boogied down the runway to the beat of Motown’s oldies but goodies! A very special thanks to our great friends and the dynamic duo behind this fantastic event! You can go to their website, ďŹ llingintheblanks.org to learn more about this amazing organization. SAN FRANCISCO, CA: SF MOMA After a three-year, multimilliondollar renovation, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art reopened to the public this spring. A 10-story addition, designed by Norwegian firm Snøhetta, more than doubles the exhibition space, offering the grand vision of “a meeting place where all can discover new inspiration and creativity, international in scope, but rooted in the Bay Area.” Noteworthy exhibitions include a world-class collection of Pop and Minimalist Art and The Alexander Calder “Motion Lab.”

PALO ALTO, CA: THE STANFORD THEATRE

SEATTLE, WA: YSL @ THE SEATTLE ART MUSEUM

With a mission to bring back a Golden Age of Hollywood cinema experience, The Stanford Theatre, first opened 1925, was stunningly restored in 1987. The theatre’s unique neoclassical Persian and Moorish architecture creates a lavish ambience. The theatre features an ongoing schedule of classic films projected in 35mm prints to bring back the magic of film.

One of Seattle’s main cultural institutions, The Seattle Art Museum, also includes an Asian Art Museum and the Olympic Scuplture Park on the Seattle waterfront. For fashion lovers, Yves Saint Laurent: Perfection of Style, running Oct. 11 to Jan. 16, 2017, showcases the designer’s extraordinary 44year career through couture garments, accessories, photographs, films and drawings through his final runway collection in 2012.

PORTLAND, OR: ART MUSEUM & PINE ST. MARKET Founded in 1892, The Portland Art Museum has world-class collections, ranging from ancient Native American artifacts to its APEX series on Northwest-based artists. Also, check out the new Pine Street Market in the historic Baggage & Carriage Building. This food hall showcases Portland’s most innovative chefs and cuisine, from handmade Japanese noodles and Israeli Street Food to a paean to the American hot dog and coffee from one of the country’s top baristas.

LOWER EAST SIDE, NYC: CULTURAL FOOD TOUR

1000 5TH AVE, NYC: DIANE ARBUS @ THE MET Art lovers won’t want to miss the Met’s exhibit Diane Arbus: In the Beginning. Arbus, regarded as one of society’s most provocative and influential artists, had a vision of using photography to give a glimpse into the world’s hidden secrets. Focusing on seven key years of her career, the show features over 100 photographs, many of which have never been seen before by the public. The exhibit runs until Nov. 27, 2016.

Food and history buffs will love a self-guided food tour of Manhattan’s Lower East Side, the “endangered” Jewish immigrant neighborhood undergoing rapid gentrification, famed for food establishments, many of which have been there over 100 years. Don’t miss: Yonah Schimmel Knish Bakery, Doughnut Plant, Russ and Daughters, Economy Candy, The Pickle Guys, Kisser’s Bialys and Bagels, and Katz’s Delicatessen, made famous in the film When Harry Met Sally.

WESTPORT, CT: THE COTTAGE

HUNTINGTON, NY: THE PARAMOUNT Opened in fall 2011, The Paramount, down the block from Mitchells of Huntington, has quickly established itself as a top live entertainment venue, hosting a robust calendar of concerts, comedy shows and more. The venue includes a dance floor, a “Skybar” and a Founder’s Club, where Billy Joel recently showed up unannounced for an impromptu set. (See Chris Mitchell for details!)

Helmed by Brian Lewis, one of Connecticut’s top chefs, the cozy, aptly named The Cottage, serving locally sourced cuisine, has received unanimous raves, notably from The New York Times, which gushed “there were too many high points to mention them all.” Some worth mentioning include the crunchy tuna, brisket steam bun and beet salad appetizers, stinging nettle tortellini, salmon in cedar paper and pineapple rum tarte Tatin. Brunch is served, too!

Ranging from stories of iconic designers and their legacies, to trends in both women’s and men’s design, to fashion’s overall impact on mass culture, these books will entertain and inform — and make a great gift or a stylish addition to any coffee table!

YVES SAINT LAURENT: THE PERFECTION OF STYLE BY FLORENCE MULLER

ADVANCED STYLE: OLDER & WISER BY ARI SETH COHEN

This book takes an intimate look at Saint Laurent, his influences, process and rise to become one of the most famous and influential designers of all time. From aspiring designer to protégé of Christian Dior, through running his own fashion house from 1961 to 2002, Yves Saint Laurent: The Perfection of Style takes the reader through the late designer’s personal and professional journey. Featuring neverbefore-seen (gorgeous) sketches and photographs, it gives a close look at his artistic process and the meanings behind his designs, as well as how Saint Laurent’s “radical clothes for the modern woman” continue to inspire other designers and fashion lovers around the globe.

Advanced Style: Older & Wiser is an homage to the confidence, beauty and unapologetic style that can only be achieved through experience. It features street fashion like you’ve never seen it before—focused on the over-60 set in the world’s most stylish locales. The ladies (and men) followed are enjoying their later years with grace, individuality and lots of joie de vivre. The book includes images from cities all over the world and short essays that provide advice and secrets from the featured women and men. The book is based on Cohen’s blog, “Advanced Style,” which was inspired by his ineffable grandmother, and has made appearances in The New York Times, The Huffington Post and other national media. An inspiring read for fashionistas of any age!

SEX & SUITS: THE EVOLUTION OF MODERN DRESS BY ANNE HOLLANDER Sex & Suits highlights the fascinating journey and evolution of both men’s and women’s fashion from the medieval period to the late 20th century. Hollander, a historian of art and dress, investigates the relationship between fashion and gender. He argues that it is in fact menswear that has served as the “trendsetter” in fashion, with women’s usually a step or two behind. Using the traditional male suit as an example, she shows how the iconic form has evolved over time, influencing and inspiring women’s styles with the use of small alterations.

COUTURE CONFESSIONS EBOOK: TWENTIETH-CENTURY FASHION ICONS IN THEIR OWN WORDS BY PAMELA GOLBIN Couture Confessions features many of fashion’s most important icons, including Vionnet, Chanel, Dior and Saint Laurent, and illustrates how their influence on the industry continues to prevail long after their passing. Chief curator of the Musée de la Mode et du Textile in Paris, Golbin provides a fresh and detailed look into the lives of these legendary designers; by constructing conversations in the designers’ own words, she allows their personalities to come alive throughout the book. Beautifully designed, this book features illustrations by internationally known illustrator and designer Yann Legendre.

20TH-CENTURY FASHION: 100 YEARS OF APPAREL ADS BY ALISON A. NIEDER “The story of modern fashion — from couture to mass market,” this book details fashion’s journey, beginning as something only for elite members of society, to a widespread global phenomenon. Using 400 fashion advertisements from the Jim Heimann Collection, Nieder shows the evolution of fashion over the last 100 years for both men’s and women’s styles as it became ingrained in the mass culture of society. Nieder has worked in fashion since 1985, and is currently the executive editor of California Apparel News, a fashion trade publication.

“I MUST TELL YOU I AM NOT REALLY AN OLD LADY; JUST CLEVERLY DISGUISED AS ONE. ART AND COLOR KEEP ME YOUNG, KEEP ME SANE. BE BOLD, BE ADVENTUROUS. DO PROFOUND THINGS, DAZZLE YOURSELF AND THE WORLD. CONTRIBUTE TO SOCIETY AND LIVE LARGE. LIFE IS SHORT, MAKE EVERY MOMENT COUNT.” — SUE KREITZMAN, FROM ADVANCED STYLE: OLDER & WISER 49

YOSSI HARARI’S

INSIDER’S GUIDE TO TEL AVIV WITH ANDREW MITCHELL-NAMDAR

Jewelry designer Yossi Harari grew up in Tel Aviv, Israel, where the seaside city’s beautiful objects and ancient artifacts inspired his creativity from an early age. Today, Harari creates jewelry in his Istanbul atelier and spends time in New York, but his heart and main residence remain in Tel Aviv. Coincidentally, Andrew Mitchell-Namdar is frequently in Tel Aviv and his sister-in-law lives around the block from Harari. Here, the two stylemakers share some of their favorite spots! YOSSI: Shalom and welcome to my country! Allow me to share some of my favorite special places. Let me take you on a stroll in my beloved city of Tel Aviv and start with what we all love best... FOOD! For a casual breakfast, the best is BENEDICT. There are a few. The one on Ben Yehuda Street is cool and has the typical Tel Aviv look and vibe. Whilst the one in Herzliya Pituah (15 minutes from Tel Aviv) has a more Mediterranean resort feel and overlooks the beach of Herzliya. But for now let’s stay in Tel Aviv please! My favorite spot to start a day trip is NEVE TZEDEK — the first neighborhood outside of Jaffa, the beginning of Tel Aviv over 100 years ago. Today it’s like our Village/SoHo. SHABAZI STREET crosses the neighborhood and has plenty of French-style cafés. The first well-known restaurant that opened there 25 years ago is SUZANNA. Guests dine under a huge old ficus tree. It’s also great for lunch while shopping at the various art galleries and small boutiques.

74

ANDREW: Neve Tzedek is fun and Suzanna is one of my favorites! The giant tree provides wonderful shade. They do amazing Sephardic food, like stuffed cabbage and they also stuff whole onions with meats. The best ice cream is also on the same road, Anita gelato. Everything they serve is great. YOSSI: One of my favorite areas is HATACHANA (or “the station”) and SARONA. They’re old settlements of the German Templars, dating back to the early 19th century. They were turned into army bases by the British government and, after that, were IDF bases. More recently, they were transformed into shopping and dining areas. Instead of demolishing the old structures and building over them, they moved each little house, one by one. They also moved the gardens and replanted trees that were hundreds of years old to create an enchanted little oasis in the middle of the crowded city! I especially love Sarona with the cafés, shops, and great food market. The famous patisserie PARIS FAUCHON has the best macarons.

ANDREW: Shawarma and falafel are Israeli soul food! You have to go all out with the shawarma, with French fries on the inside and tahini dripping out of it. In Jaffa, the old city, HAJ KAHIL has amazing lamb shawarma. There’s no ambience at all, it’s almost diner-like, but the food is to die for. I also love DABUSH for lamb or chicken shawarma at 1 Zeitlin Street. YOSSI: BRASSERIE is a culinary landmark, open 24/7 in the heart of the city on Rabin Square for breakfast, lunch or dinner — the menu is very French-oriented, but like most of our places, the Mediterranean touch is there... The same group owns the fabulous boutique hotel MONTIFIORE, which has a fine and delicious restaurant, near the new NORMAN HOTEL! Both places, Montifiore and Norman, are like time travel... You find yourself in a world of the 1930s Bauhaus movement of architecture and style that gave its unique signature to the city of Tel Aviv. You can really feel it in the cup of tea they serve with their special China — a real chic treat! You might also see me there for

breakfast having my Eggs Benedict! From the Norman or Montifiore, you can walk down the famous Rothschild Boulevard with its African trees that create beautiful shade all the way to our concert and opera halls. ANDREW: The new ROTHSCHILD is an amazing and beautifully renovated boutique hotel with a European feel in the Bauhaus neighborhood. It’s uber sophisticated. I also love the Norman for more of a Miami-trendy-boutique feel that’s closer to the beach. The DAN HOTEL also has as a long history there and in Tel Aviv, you can’t go wrong with the INTERCONTINENTAL. YOSSI: If you are a carnivore, then MEAT BAR on Chen Avenue, beside Rabin Square is the place! For vegetarians they have the best Caesar salad and for fish lovers, TURKIZ in the SEA & SUN complex is great! Inside or outside is good and make sure to ask for the mixed Arab salad with tahini. Don’t miss the dish called “Harayme” — a Moroccan way of

cooking sea bass with a spicy tomato sauce... delicious! Last but not least, our top place for special occasions is TOPOLOPOMPO, where famous chef Avi Conforti serves fine fusion Korean. For lunch, my mother and I love REVIVA AND CELIA G-MALL or the original one in the upmarket city of RAMAT HASHARON, where you can also visit my showroom — all a 15-minute drive from the center of Tel Aviv. ANDREW: Another absolute favorite… I love MANTA RAY, which is by the beach in Tel Aviv. They serve wonderful little mezze plates (try a lot of them!) and the fish is so fresh, it’s right on the ocean. YOSSI: Of course we cannot skip the beach! The old port of Jaffa with the famous museum of the sculpture artist ILANA GOOR is a must! The OLD CITY OF JAFFA has lots of galleries and small streets, all named after different signs of the zodiac. In a city that’s 4,000 years old,

you must try pastries from the famous bakery ABULAFIA, there since the days of the Ottoman Empire. Now, to the modern/tech side of Israel — the OLD PORT OF TEL AVIV and the original trade center that were in ruins were redeveloped a few years ago, winning awards for transforming a defunct landmark into a modern car-free area for restaurants, playgrounds, shops and cafés, and with a wood boardwalk that is planned to continue all the way to Jaffa! (Tel Aviv just celebrated its 68th year... we have a lot more to do!) Hope to tell you more next time about the one and only.... Jerusalem. ANDREW: A few quick notes on Jerusalem in case you’re going soon… MAMILLA HOTEL is absolutely great and a perfect location for exploring the Old City. DARNA has great Moroccan food and MACHNEYUDA is amazing for “Shuk to Table.” But plan early if you want to go there; Assaf Granit is the most famous chef in Israel!

Inventive

DRINKING

FROM HOUSE-MADE INGREDIENTS TO ORGANIC BOOZE, YOUR COCKTAIL, ELEVATED. BY ROBERT HAYNES-PETERSON

s little as 15 years ago, even the top bars in the country relied on ingredients like storebought sour mix, nuclear-red maraschino cherries, and a variety of other chemical-laced mixers in their cocktails. Then about a decade ago, the rise of the “craft” cocktail speakeasy began. Now even your corner bartender is incorporating fresh ingredients, infusing his own simple syrup with rare vanilla bean, or adding cedar smoke to her whiskey. The elevation of the humble cocktail to a culinary work of art (and science) involves many steps: research and development, interaction with chefs, and a constant desire on the part of the bartender to explore local greenmarkets, ethnic specialty stores and century-old bar books for inspiration. “Not everything at the bar is what you can get in a store,” says Craig Ventrice, the bar manager at Kawa Ni, a Westport, Connecticut-based restaurant inspired by Japanese pubs. “There are house-made syrups and tinctures we do in the back, with ingredients Chef is using at the moment. It’s a process: it often takes a few failures to get a drink to work.” On the menu, you’ll find elements like mint-infused Campari, ginger-infused Fernet or smoked almond syrup. Even the casual Sake Bombs feature unlikely ingredients like Yuzu (an Asian citrus) or Thai chili syrup. Customizing and creativity in ingredients can approach “mad scientist” levels: At both 69 Colebrook Road in London and Booker + Dax in Manhattan, bartenders employ lab tools like rotovaps, centrifuges and high-tech heat pokers to clarify, re-distill or otherwise manipulate ingredients. At

92

SushiSamba London and New York, bartender Richard Woods has revitalized the Sex and the City-era drinks menu into a range of eye-catching (and delicious) “Culinary Cocktails” for the Instagram generation. Garnishes include whole peppers and Wagyu beef, while drinks are enhanced with ingredients like avocado puree and barely legal spices. “My role has always been creative,” says Woods, who gained fame as London’s “most imaginative bartender” at the bar/restaurant Duck and Waffle. “I worked with chefs at both Duck and Waffle and SushiSamba, so there is definitely a culinary element.” His delicious Tom Yam cocktail (cilantro vodka, pureed cilantro, serrano pepper, ginger and lemon, sashimi garnish), for example, is a riff on a classic Thai soup. Keeping up with the times, he recently added cold brew coffee cocktails and complex mocktails to the menu. Being creative isn’t enough anymore. A new wave of “conscientious cocktails”—featuring organic or sustainably produced spirits, locally procured ingredients or eco-friendly techniques—is spreading across the globe. In Chicago, Nandini Khaund of Cindy’s Rooftop has created the Howl at the Jun cocktail incorporating locally produced kombucha (a fermented honey tea). The cuisine at Lazy Bear in San Francisco is driven by seasonal produce from local growers, and bar manager Nicolas Torres reflects this in his drinks: The majority of the modifiers are made in-house, including black lime bitters, aquavit and a car acara shrub. Sourcing other ingredients is “all about relationships,” says Torres. “We want to know that our suppliers care about their craft as much as we do.”

DRESSING

MILANESE FAMILY BUSINESS BALDASSARI CREATES CLOTHING THAT SUITS BOTH ITS HOMELAND AND THE WORLD. BY BRIAN SCOTT LIPTON he Baldassari family doesn’t need to look far to find inspiration for its beautiful line of clothing; in fact, a glance out of the office windows in the fashionable Brera section of Milan, Italy (the city’s equivalent of SoHo in New York) usually does the trick. “We double-check our collection every day through the people in our own neighborhood,” says Renato Baldassari, who now runs the business (along with his brother Alberto) that was founded over 30 years ago by his father, Maurizio. “People in the street come up to us and ask about a particular fabric. The idea of bringing Milan and the Milanese look to our clients always stays with us. What we try to do is create a wardrobe for all occasions, whether it’s having an aperitivo in a café in Brera or going to the opening night at La Scala.” The commitment to Italy is hardly surprising. Maurizio Baldassari, who remains active in the business, has been a member of Italy’s fashion community his whole life. In fact, early in his career, he worked as the head of fashion purchasing in one of Milan’s most famous department stores—alongside future designer Giorgio Armani. The company sources its

96

fabric in the famed Biella region and uses Milanese weaving to accomplish its look. While Baldassari clothing first took off in the Far East (the company is still a major presence at the Japanese department store Takashimaya and can be found in many of China’s finest shops), much of the focus today is on appealing to the American consumer, who can be seen wearing a Baldassari overcoat to the office, a soft-shouldered sport jacket to dinner, or a sweater for a weekend outing. “Americans are very precise when it comes to dressing up. It’s about the perfect cuff or the right drape. They are always striving for excellence,” says Renato. “But we’ve also found they can be very open-minded when it comes to color or pattern, and have been very welcoming to the looks we create. There’s no pressure on our part to just make a black suit. And that’s also one of the great things about being in a family business. We don’t really worry about what the rest of the industry is doing or about chasing trends. While we’re very sensitive about our relationship with our selling partners, the bottom line is we’re able to make and sell what we like.”

If there was any lingering question of the brilliance, innovation and craftsmanship of the late couturier Yves Saint Laurent, the new museum exhibition Yves Saint Laurent: The Perfection of Style (on view at the Seattle Art Museum from October 11 to January 16 before traveling to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts on May 7) should put any doubts to rest. This multifaceted retrospective drawn from the collection of the Fondation Pierre Bergé-Yves Saint Laurent will shine a bright light on the designer’s genius. On view will be 100 of his greatest creations that span nearly 50 years— some never before seen in public—along with photographs, drawings and films that give insight into his particular process. Says curator Florence Muller: “The changes he progressively introduced into the traditional representation of the feminine and masculine bodies and the codes of seduction stand at the origin of the profound changes of contemporary ways of dress.” Truer words were never spoken.

Square Deal Wisdom of many sorts is dispensed in A.C. Phillips’ wonderful how-to guide, The Pocket Square: 22 Essential Folds. Each chapter (with such unforgettable titles as “The Guido Puff” or “Diamonds are Forever”) illustrates how to create one pocket square look perfect for any suit or sportcoat. Better still, each section is preceded by an aptly chosen quote from a style icon, ranging from playwright Oscar Wilde to actors Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart to designers Hardy Amies, Tom Ford and Luciano Barbera. Best of all, there’s also a page with eight must-know “Etiquette” rules, including our favorite: “A gentleman should carry one square for show and another to blow.” Now this is what we call essential reading.

PERFECTION PERSONIFIED

f Canali’s Kei jacket has taken the fashion world by storm, it’s no surprise. As cozy and light as a knit garment, impeccably sharp, and so comfortable it can be worn year-round, this softly structured jacket is a masterpiece of Italian tailoring that can be appreciated (and worn) by men from every walk of life. And that’s exactly what Giorgio Canali had planned from the start: “When we created the Kei jacket, we didn’t have a specific customer in mind. We wanted something that would be timeless and appeal to many different types of men. The Kei strikes the perfect balance between comfort and style and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. It’s this level of versatility that makes it such a hit season after season.” Trust us: no closet should be without one!
