hen you’ve been in the clothing business for six generations, you see your fair share of changes. But being around so long gives us the perspective to see beyond them. At Oak Hall, there’s one thing that’s never changed. That’s our dedication to our customers. You’re part of our Oak Hall family, and we would never have lasted 155 years without you. We strive to exceed the expectations of every customer who walks through our doors. And we are always looking for better ways to serve and connect with you. But the best way, of course, is to see you in person. So please come by for a visit soon. With best wishes always, Will, Bill, Bob Levy and Jake And the entire Oak Hall family

Years before America had ever even heard of Coca-Cola, Solomon Halle opened the first Oak Hall in downtown Memphis. Lit by oil lamps instead of light bulbs, the original store was one of the first ready-to-wear stores in the country. Still owned and operated by direct descendants of the original owner, our original mission remains the same: offering customers the greatest selection, giving them the greatest service, and exceeding their expectations every time they visit.
Oak Hall celebrates its 25th anniversary.

THE ONE PRICE CLOTHING HOUSE Back in the 1800s, clothing didn’t necessarily have set prices. People of different statuses in society might pay entirely different rates. But Oak Hall’s policy, one that remains in effect to this day, was that everyone pays the same price, regardless of who they are. Early on, Oak Hall put this policy in writing, by designating the store as the "One Price Clothing House,” as seen on this store receipt from 1887.

WILL&PAUL Probably not. Although menswear is evolution rather than revolution, suits that are more than five years old, even from the best makers, will definitely look dated: trousers too long and baggy, jackets too roomy, shoulders too padded. Designers have gradually gone slimmer in suits, sportcoats and trousers, and fabrics have evolved so that today’s suits are more comfortable and travel-friendly than the old stuff in your closet. We’re betting you’ll find our fall ’14 suits so comfortable that you’ll choose to wear them in more casual settings, even when no suit is required.
Q:
Is it okay to text or email my sales associate when I have a wardrobe question? How can I maximize our relationship? Not only is it okay, but they would totally appreciate it! (Well maybe not at 3:00 a.m…) Our sales people have a wealth of information that can help you look your best every day. They can email you photos of new items as they arrive in store that will work with what you’ve already bought. They can inform you about the bestfitting jeans. They can help you match colors and patterns or figure out which tie to wear with which shirt collar. (For example, your new skinny
18
tie is not likely to work with a cutaway collar shirt, but yes, you can wear the brown suede shoes with your gray suit!) They can also suggest the perfect gift, wrap it and send it without you needing to leave your desk. Never be afraid to contact your sales associate for any fashion-related issue: their passion for fine clothing is the reason they chose this career, and your trust in them is the ultimate compliment.
FALL 2014 FASHION TIPS FOR HIM
I see that a lot of my favorite brands have their own stores: Q: do you carry the same styles that they do?
Sometimes there’s crossover, but we try to customize our mix to the needs of our community. While fashion has become somewhat international, our buyers know their customers personally so it’s easy for them to fine-tune assortments to specific tastes and lifestyles. Another advantage of shopping an independent store: since we carry so many top brands, we can suggest how to mix your favorite pieces so you’re not dressed head-to-toe in a single designer. This type of brandblending adds creativity and personality to your look so you won’t see yourself coming and going. Stop by and we’ll show you how to do it!

Q:
Other than for weddings and special events, I don’t wear suits much these days. Is it okay to pull out what’s in my closet for occasional dress-up events?
f i n e s w e d i s h s h i rt m a k e r s i n c e
ASKSTEPHANIE& CATHERINE Knit dressing is one of our favorite looks for fall. It’s something a lot of people can relate to because it works for so many different lifestyles. It’s all about finding the right proportions for your body. The first step is to make sure everything fits well: nothing too loose or bulky. Generally the base layer should be a lighter weight than the top garments. Stick to the same color family, but mix up the look with varying textures. It’s best to keep chunkier items on the outer layer in the form of a cardigan or a scarf. Speaking of texture: come into Oak Hall to check out new mixedmedia pieces from Vince and Helmut Lang. The leather and cashmere combinations featured in their fall jackets go with almost anything, taking the guesswork out of layering. Pair these pieces with a Joie silk blouse, top with a chunky scarf, and you’ll be perfectly layered for fall!
Q:
I want to invest in an updated outerwear piece. What should I look for? The oversized coat will be huge this season. We love a silhouette that comes slightly away from the body and features a gently rounded or raglan shoulder. Try this shape from Karolina Zmarlak and Max Mara.
Both brands made gorgeous coats in luxe fabrics for the season. Some women are afraid they’ll be dwarfed by these oversized pieces, and it’s true that you can often go down a size or two from what you normally wear. If you’re on the shorter side, consider trying this trend in a slimmer, less bulky fabric. It also helps if you keep your outfit slim underneath; try a skinny pant and a fitted sweater or a streamlined dress. On the sporty side, go for a new puffer style from Barbour that comes away from the body. It pairs well with skinny pants and jeans, offering that on-trend shape while still being warm and functional.
I love how comfortable my boyfriend jeans are. Q: How can I transition them from summer to fall?
Boyfriend jeans will continue to be popular for the upcoming season. Updated versions with a slightly slimmer leg (often called relaxed skinny or slim boyfriend) pair perfectly with ankle booties for a chic fall look. Look out for styles from favorites like J Brand, AG, Citizens of Humanity and Rag & Bone. These tailored boyfriend jeans pair perfectly with detailed sweaters from brands like Vince, Eileen Fisher and Rebecca Taylor. Top the outfit off with a leather jacket or vest for a comfortable, trendy fall look.

STYLE COZY UP TO VINCE THIS FALL.
Putting on any piece from the Vince collection is guaranteed to make you feel luxuriously relaxed, while maintaining a sense of effortless style. Founded in 2002 on the premise of creating timeless, high-quality staples like cashmere sweaters, leather jackets, silk and woven tops, denim and footwear, Vince should be considered a crucial part of every closet. For this fall’s women’s collection, Vince travels back to the ’90s to take inspiration from the grunge era, updating looks in a sophisticated way. Think soft plaids and oversized sweaters, mixed media, ombre stripes and moto details. The collection also goes “utilitarian chic,” featuring classic military styles like wool twills, soft leathers, peacoats and shearling outerwear in colors like foliage green, officer blue, chartreuse, camel and shiraz. Details like luxe hardware and visible stitching adorn many of these looks. Layering is also important for fall. Try mixing Vince staples (like

VINCE OFFERS THE PERFECT BLEND OF CHIC, LUXE ESSENTIALS AND THIS SEASON’S MUST-HAVE FASHION. heather cashmeres) with fashion pieces (refined flannels and fur-lined parkas) for a stylish, put-together look. Modern and minimal are the buzz words for the Vince man. This season, designers were inspired by artist Donald Judd’s art installation in Marfa, Texas. Judd’s sculptures are minimalistic with clean lines, combining an industrial feel with natural elements. Vince’s take on this theme results in sharp tailoring paired with relaxed silhouettes. Leather is important in all categories of the collection, from buttery leather vests to stylish moto jackets. Details like subtle stitching and hardware, front-draping and paperweight fabrics are incorporated in this casual cool offering. Shades of blue are prominent, from lighter navys and teals to ceruleans and robin’s egg, balanced with bright grays and denim. Topping off this season’s trend is “inseparable separates:” pairing coordinated tops and bottoms for a headto-toe look. For both men and women, Vince offers the perfect blend of chic, luxe essentials and this season’s must-have fashion.

DIRK OLSEN
THE ANNESDALE MANSION IS ONE OF MEMPHIS’ MOST HIDDEN TREASURES. Its majestic beauty and timeless architecture have been exclusively private and closed to the public since the 19th century… until now. Ken Robison purchased Annesdale in 2010 and has since been restoring it back to its former glory. In the fall of 2013, Annesdale opened its gates as the newest and most unique wedding and event venue in Memphis, TN. Dr. Samuel Mansfield built the Annesdale Mansion, an Italianate Villa, in 1850. Considered a historic residence, Annesdale is one of the largest and oldest homes to grace the Memphis area. Colonel Robert C. Brinkley bought the estate as a wedding present for his daughter, Annie Overton Brinkley, and her husband, Colonel Robert Bogardus Snowden. He named the estate “Annesdale” in her honor. The Annesdale Mansion and its gardens were home to the prominent Snowden family for more than 160 years. It even served as a Civil War hospital. This Italianate, antebellum estate is located in the Snowden
