GREETINGS FROM TYLER & THE MITCHELL FAMILY

WELCOME

LOOK GOOD. FEEL WONDERFUL! At Wilkes Bashford, making you look great is only a part of what we strive to do every day. Our bigger-picture goal is to make you feel wonderful. When you’re in our stores and your Style Advisor brings matching shoes or a drink to your fitting room. When you drop in to say hello and share stories and adventures. When you’re shopping on our site and having your selections reserved at your store of choice. When we see you at a charity event, joining us in giving back to our community or to the world. This fall, as we savor the crisp, cool weather that is coming, we know that sometimes the world around us can get a bit chaotic. In a tradition started by our parents/grandparents, Norma and Ed, over 50 years ago, our entire staff has aimed to offer a reliable environment in which you can enjoy the gift of feeling special. We look forward to sharing our extraordinary new designer collections with you this fall, to making you feel better when you walk out of our stores than when you walked in, and to toasting the beauty all around us.

INSIDE THE DESIGNER’S STUDIO

DEREK LAM & TONY BRAVO A designer’s view... up close and personal San Francisco Chronicle journalist and NY Fashion Week correspondent for the Hearst Newspapers, Tony Bravo, interviewed fellow San Franciscan- born, award-winning and critically acclaimed New York fashion designer Derek Lam at this Wilkes Palo Alto luncheon event. In a casual atmosphere with a modern setting, Wilkes Bashford clients enjoyed smart, witty and informative repartee between the two fashion experts. The interview scenario proved to be the perfect venue for the first “Inside the Designer’s Studio.” Bravo questioned and cajoled Lam on subjects such as childhood memories of San Francisco, design inspiration and travel, ending with a rapid-fire questionnaire. Following this “backstage pass” and insider’s look at the creative process, the ladies lunched with both the designer and the journalist while models wearing the Derek Lam Fall 2016 Collection circled the tables. Shopping with personal consultation from Lam himself, the clients thoroughly relished this exciting afternoon at Wilkes! Q Photos by Heather Perry

SF store manager Jeff Garelick commentated as guests were treated to The Best of Spring!

IN GOOD COMPANY Must-Haves Trend Fashion Show & Luncheon Guests attending the annual Must-Haves Trend Fashion Show & Luncheon were wooed by Wilkes Bashford’s own Jeff Garelick. The event, held at the store’s famous San Francisco seven-story townhouse, presented Spring 2016 fashion looks. Models strutted the runway as Jeff’s casual commentary made fashion’s newest trends easy to understand and, of course, desire. Q

Guests and style advisors enjoyed camaraderie, cocktails and clothes.

HAVE A HEART! SF General Hospital Heart Event Our annual SFGHF shopping night took place this January, when guests shopped to donate a percentage of sales to the SFGHF and enjoyed the tabletop hearts created by local artists. This year we featured four hearts that adorned our windows for the month of February to celebrate the event and its contributions to the foundation. A special thanks to our dear friend, Judy Guggenhime, for her tireless efforts for this great cause. Q

STAY CONNECTED Be sure to visit our social media sites as we post the season’s hottest trends, share backstage passes and peek at our designers’ inspiration. Sneak a behind-the-scenes look at photo shoots, fashion weeks, showrooms and, of course, the party circuit.

WE’RE ALL ONE BIG COMMUNITY! SOME NEW (& NOT SO NEW) THINGS TO DO WHEN YOU’RE IN THE AREAS OF OUR 8 STORES…

SAN FRANCISCO, CA: SF MOMA After a three-year, multimilliondollar renovation, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art reopened to the public this spring. A 10-story addition, designed by Norwegian firm Snøhetta, more than doubles the exhibition space, offering the grand vision of “a meeting place where all can discover new inspiration and creativity, international in scope, but rooted in the Bay Area.” Noteworthy exhibitions include a world-class collection of Pop and Minimalist Art and The Alexander Calder “Motion Lab.”

PALO ALTO, CA: THE STANFORD THEATRE

SEATTLE, WA: YSL @ THE SEATTLE ART MUSEUM

With a mission to bring back a Golden Age of Hollywood cinema experience, The Stanford Theatre, first opened 1925, was stunningly restored in 1987. The theatre’s unique neoclassical Persian and Moorish architecture creates a lavish ambience. The theatre features an ongoing schedule of classic films projected in 35mm prints to bring back the magic of film.

One of Seattle’s main cultural institutions, The Seattle Art Museum, also includes an Asian Art Museum and the Olympic Scuplture Park on the Seattle waterfront. For fashion lovers, Yves Saint Laurent: Perfection of Style, running Oct. 11 to Jan. 16, 2017, showcases the designer’s extraordinary 44year career through couture garments, accessories, photographs, films and drawings through his final runway collection in 2012.

PORTLAND, OR: ART MUSEUM & PINE ST. MARKET Founded in 1892, The Portland Art Museum has world-class collections, ranging from ancient Native American artifacts to its APEX series on Northwest-based artists. Also, check out the new Pine Street Market in the historic Baggage & Carriage Building. This food hall showcases Portland’s most innovative chefs and cuisine, from handmade Japanese noodles and Israeli Street Food to a paean to the American hot dog and coffee from one of the country’s top baristas.

LOWER EAST SIDE, NYC: CULTURAL FOOD TOUR

1000 5TH AVE, NYC: DIANE ARBUS @ THE MET Art lovers won’t want to miss the Met’s exhibit Diane Arbus: In the Beginning. Arbus, regarded as one of society’s most provocative and influential artists, had a vision of using photography to give a glimpse into the world’s hidden secrets. Focusing on seven key years of her career, the show features over 100 photographs, many of which have never been seen before by the public. The exhibit runs until Nov. 27, 2016.

Food and history buffs will love a self-guided food tour of Manhattan’s Lower East Side, the “endangered” Jewish immigrant neighborhood undergoing rapid gentrification, famed for food establishments, many of which have been there over 100 years. Don’t miss: Yonah Schimmel Knish Bakery, Doughnut Plant, Russ and Daughters, Economy Candy, The Pickle Guys, Kisser’s Bialys and Bagels, and Katz’s Delicatessen, made famous in the film When Harry Met Sally.

WESTPORT, CT: THE COTTAGE

HUNTINGTON, NY: THE PARAMOUNT Opened in fall 2011, The Paramount, down the block from Mitchells of Huntington, has quickly established itself as a top live entertainment venue, hosting a robust calendar of concerts, comedy shows and more. The venue includes a dance floor, a “Skybar” and a Founder’s Club, where Billy Joel recently showed up unannounced for an impromptu set. (See Chris Mitchell for details!)

Helmed by Brian Lewis, one of Connecticut’s top chefs, the cozy, aptly named The Cottage, serving locally sourced cuisine, has received unanimous raves, notably from The New York Times, which gushed “there were too many high points to mention them all.” Some worth mentioning include the crunchy tuna, brisket steam bun and beet salad appetizers, stinging nettle tortellini, salmon in cedar paper and pineapple rum tarte Tatin. Brunch is served, too!

SKATING FOR SOMA

TONY HAWK

THE BIRDMAN SOARS OVER SAN FRANCISCO

Left: Duuude... a spectacular 720! Below: Hand-plant, Tony-style.

Directly in front of Tyler Mitchell’s SOMA loft, a personal "vert ramp" was installed by veteran pro skater Tony Hawk, nicknamed “The Birdman,” and his exhibition absolutely astounded the crowd. He brought along fellow pro skateboarders Steve Caballero, Tommy Guerrero and Elliot Sloan to celebrate and promote the future site and creation of a long-awaited SOMA skate park. The Tony Hawk Foundation made a donation to the SOMA skate park and raised $400,000 for his foundation. The Tony Hawk Foundation has given away $5.2 million helping to fi nance public skate parks in low-income areas in all 50 states. Turning pro at the age of 14, Hawk is one of the most influential skateboarders of all time, becoming top in the world at 16 and continuing on to win 70 skateboarding contests in his 17-year career. He won the National Skateboard Association World Championships for 12 consecutive years. He owns Birdhouse, a skateboard company, and also has a successful line of video games and skateboarding videos. Hawk was the fi rst skater to land a “900,” a trick involving the completion of two-and-a-half midair revolutions on a skateboard. His exhibitions draw huge crowds and serve to advance the sport. A friend and client of Wilkes Bashford, Hawk was honored as Tyler Mitchell hosted an intimate after-hours dinner at his SOMA residence with his crew of fellow skateboard stars and several Wilkes clients. The guests devoured Tyler Florence’s Wayfair Tavern’s famous fried chicken dinner, and great wines from Mascot and Promontory that were donated by Will and Amanda Harlan. Jeff Schlarb created all of the VIP hospitality areas for the skate park fundraiser and Doug Dalton’s Bourbon and Branch mixed the cocktails, while famous DJ Z-Trip spun tunes from the top of the ramp! YVES SAINT LAURENT: THE PERFECTION OF STYLE BY FLORENCE MULLER

ADVANCED STYLE: OLDER & WISER BY ARI SETH COHEN

This book takes an intimate look at Saint Laurent, his influences, process and rise to become one of the most famous and influential designers of all time. From aspiring designer to protégé of Christian Dior, through running his own fashion house from 1961 to 2002, Yves Saint Laurent: The Perfection of Style takes the reader through the late designer’s personal and professional journey. Featuring neverbefore-seen (gorgeous) sketches and photographs, it gives a close look at his artistic process and the meanings behind his designs, as well as how Saint Laurent’s “radical clothes for the modern woman” continue to inspire other designers and fashion lovers around the globe.

Advanced Style: Older & Wiser is an homage to the confidence, beauty and unapologetic style that can only be achieved through experience. It features street fashion like you’ve never seen it before—focused on the over-60 set in the world’s most stylish locales. The ladies (and men) followed are enjoying their later years with grace, individuality and lots of joie de vivre. The book includes images from cities all over the world and short essays that provide advice and secrets from the featured women and men. The book is based on Cohen’s blog, “Advanced Style,” which was inspired by his ineffable grandmother, and has made appearances in The New York Times, The Huffington Post and other national media. An inspiring read for fashionistas of any age!

SEX & SUITS: THE EVOLUTION OF MODERN DRESS BY ANNE HOLLANDER Sex & Suits highlights the fascinating journey and evolution of both men’s and women’s fashion from the medieval period to the late 20th century. Hollander, a historian of art and dress, investigates the relationship between fashion and gender. He argues that it is in fact menswear that has served as the “trendsetter” in fashion, with women’s usually a step or two behind. Using the traditional male suit as an example, she shows how the iconic form has evolved over time, influencing and inspiring women’s styles with the use of small alterations.

COUTURE CONFESSIONS EBOOK: TWENTIETH-CENTURY FASHION ICONS IN THEIR OWN WORDS BY PAMELA GOLBIN Couture Confessions features many of fashion’s most important icons, including Vionnet, Chanel, Dior and Saint Laurent, and illustrates how their influence on the industry continues to prevail long after their passing. Chief curator of the Musée de la Mode et du Textile in Paris, Golbin provides a fresh and detailed look into the lives of these legendary designers; by constructing conversations in the designers’ own words, she allows their personalities to come alive throughout the book. Beautifully designed, this book features illustrations by internationally known illustrator and designer Yann Legendre.

20TH-CENTURY FASHION: 100 YEARS OF APPAREL ADS BY ALISON A. NIEDER “The story of modern fashion — from couture to mass market,” this book details fashion’s journey, beginning as something only for elite members of society, to a widespread global phenomenon. Using 400 fashion advertisements from the Jim Heimann Collection, Nieder shows the evolution of fashion over the last 100 years for both men’s and women’s styles as it became ingrained in the mass culture of society. Nieder has worked in fashion since 1985, and is currently the executive editor of California Apparel News, a fashion trade publication.

“I MUST TELL YOU I AM NOT REALLY AN OLD LADY; JUST CLEVERLY DISGUISED AS ONE. ART AND COLOR KEEP ME YOUNG, KEEP ME SANE. BE BOLD, BE ADVENTUROUS. DO PROFOUND THINGS, DAZZLE YOURSELF AND THE WORLD. Upon arrival, you can enjoy the Berggasthaus local food and beer at the inn’s charming restaurant while admiring the view of the AescherAlpstein Mountains. If you’re looking for a Wildkirchli five-star hotel, this is not the place for you; the Aescher prides itself on providing a rustic and authentic experience. HOT SPOTS IN THE HOLY LAND

YOSSI HARARI’S

INSIDER’S GUIDE TO TEL AVIV WITH ANDREW MITCHELL-NAMDAR

Jewelry designer Yossi Harari grew up in Tel Aviv, Israel, where the seaside city’s beautiful objects and ancient artifacts inspired his creativity from an early age. Today, Harari creates jewelry in his Istanbul atelier and spends time in New York, but his heart and main residence remain in Tel Aviv. Coincidentally, Andrew Mitchell-Namdar is frequently in Tel Aviv and his sister-in-law lives around the block from Harari. Here, the two stylemakers share some of their favorite spots! YOSSI: Shalom and welcome to my country! Allow me to share some of my favorite special places. Let me take you on a stroll in my beloved city of Tel Aviv and start with what we all love best... FOOD! For a casual breakfast, the best is BENEDICT. There are a few. The one on Ben Yehuda Street is cool and has the typical Tel Aviv look and vibe. Whilst the one in Herzliya Pituah (15 minutes from Tel Aviv) has a more Mediterranean resort feel and overlooks the beach of Herzliya. But for now let’s stay in Tel Aviv please! My favorite spot to start a day trip is NEVE TZEDEK — the first neighborhood outside of Jaffa, the beginning of Tel Aviv over 100 years ago. Today it’s like our Village/SoHo. SHABAZI STREET crosses the neighborhood and has plenty of French-style cafés. The first well-known restaurant that opened there 25 years ago is SUZANNA. Guests dine under a huge old ficus tree. It’s also great for lunch while shopping at the various art galleries and small boutiques.

72

ANDREW: Neve Tzedek is fun and Suzanna is one of my favorites! The giant tree provides wonderful shade. They do amazing Sephardic food, like stuffed cabbage and they also stuff whole onions with meats. The best ice cream is also on the same road, Anita gelato. Everything they serve is great. YOSSI: One of my favorite areas is HATACHANA (or “the station”) and SARONA. They’re old settlements of the German Templars, dating back to the early 19th century. They were turned into army bases by the British government and, after that, were IDF bases. More recently, they were transformed into shopping and dining areas. Instead of demolishing the old structures and building over them, they moved each little house, one by one. They also moved the gardens and replanted trees that were hundreds of years old to create an enchanted little oasis in the middle of the crowded city! I especially love Sarona with the cafés, shops, and great food market. The famous patisserie PARIS FAUCHON has the best macarons.

ANDREW: Shawarma and falafel are Israeli soul food! You have to go all out with the shawarma, with French fries on the inside and tahini dripping out of it. In Jaffa, the old city, HAJ KAHIL has amazing lamb shawarma. There’s no ambience at all, it’s almost diner-like, but the food is to die for. I also love DABUSH for lamb or chicken shawarma at 1 Zeitlin Street. YOSSI: BRASSERIE is a culinary landmark, open 24/7 in the heart of the city on Rabin Square for breakfast, lunch or dinner — the menu is very French-oriented, but like most of our places, the Mediterranean touch is there... The same group owns the fabulous boutique hotel MONTIFIORE, which has a fine and delicious restaurant, near the new NORMAN HOTEL! Both places, Montifiore and Norman, are like time travel... You find yourself in a world of the 1930s Bauhaus movement of architecture and style that gave its unique signature to the city of Tel Aviv. You can really feel it in the cup of tea they serve with their special China — a real chic treat! You might also see me there for

breakfast having my Eggs Benedict! From the Norman or Montifiore, you can walk down the famous Rothschild Boulevard with its African trees that create beautiful shade all the way to our concert and opera halls. ANDREW: The new ROTHSCHILD is an amazing and beautifully renovated boutique hotel with a European feel in the Bauhaus neighborhood. It’s uber sophisticated. I also love the Norman for more of a Miami-trendy-boutique feel that’s closer to the beach. The DAN HOTEL also has as a long history there and in Tel Aviv, you can’t go wrong with the INTERCONTINENTAL. YOSSI: If you are a carnivore, then MEAT BAR on Chen Avenue, beside Rabin Square is the place! For vegetarians they have the best Caesar salad and for fish lovers, TURKIZ in the SEA & SUN complex is great! Inside or outside is good and make sure to ask for the mixed Arab salad with tahini. Don’t miss the dish called “Harayme” — a Moroccan way of

cooking sea bass with a spicy tomato sauce... delicious! Last but not least, our top place for special occasions is TOPOLOPOMPO, where famous chef Avi Conforti serves fine fusion Korean. For lunch, my mother and I love REVIVA AND CELIA G-MALL or the original one in the upmarket city of RAMAT HASHARON, where you can also visit my showroom — all a 15-minute drive from the center of Tel Aviv. ANDREW: Another absolute favorite… I love MANTA RAY, which is by the beach in Tel Aviv. They serve wonderful little mezze plates (try a lot of them!) and the fish is so fresh, it’s right on the ocean. YOSSI: Of course we cannot skip the beach! The old port of Jaffa with the famous museum of the sculpture artist ILANA GOOR is a must! The OLD CITY OF JAFFA has lots of galleries and small streets, all named after different signs of the zodiac. In a city that’s 4,000 years old,

you must try pastries from the famous bakery ABULAFIA, there since the days of the Ottoman Empire. Now, to the modern/tech side of Israel — the OLD PORT OF TEL AVIV and the original trade center that were in ruins were redeveloped a few years ago, winning awards for transforming a defunct landmark into a modern car-free area for restaurants, playgrounds, shops and cafés, and with a wood boardwalk that is planned to continue all the way to Jaffa! (Tel Aviv just celebrated its 68th year... we have a lot more to do!) Hope to tell you more next time about the one and only.... Jerusalem. ANDREW: A few quick notes on Jerusalem in case you’re going soon… MAMILLA HOTEL is absolutely great and a perfect location for exploring the Old City. DARNA has great Moroccan food and MACHNEYUDA is amazing for “Shuk to Table.” But plan early if you want to go there; Assaf Granit is the most famous chef in Israel!
