he month of August is here and it’s already time to head back to school. The summer seems as if it has literally flown by very fast. This month’s issue of Fashion Paper is dedicated to kids who are doing amazing things. As parents it is important to inspire our kids to be all that they can be and really help and motivate them to reach for the stars. I was so amazed and proud of the kids who are featured in this month’s issue of Fashion Paper. Diva Davanna is already blazing the runway at 14 years old. Ten year old Arneshya’ Jackson, a young entrepreneur and model from Little Rock, Arkansas has launched her very own lip gloss line. Special thanks to Natasha Crook for helping us scout amazing kids and designers for this issue!!!! Again and again, I can’t say it enough; I’m so thankful that I get the chance to share my passion with all of you! Until next time, see you in October!!!!!! :) Lacrystal Parker- Stylezz

Hello Davanna how are you doing? Hi! I’m doing fine. And thank you for having me. I know Fashion week is coming up soon and I know around this time you get very busy with Fashion Week! Are you excited about Fashion Week? Yes. Because I get to walk for several designers; but my favorite is walking the runway. How does it feel to have done over 200 fashion shows at only 14 years old! Well, I did about 200 when I was about 11, but now I’ve reached about 500 shows. And it feels really good because I get to travel to so many states. I even went to the Virgin Islands FW in 2012.

DIVA DAVANNA Diva Davanna has been modeling since she was just four years old, winning many awards along the way, and has appeared on The Tyra Banks Show as well as America’s Next Top Model. Fashion Paper had a chance to catch up with Davanna to chat about life as a super model. By: Lacrystal Parker

When did you realize that you wanted to be a model? I started modeling at 4 years old in my mom’s fashion shows and her friend Timotheus Smart started training me so I could become professional and better on the runway. What is your favorite part about being a model? I get to travel a lot and meet lots of celebrities. And I love to be in fashion shows and walk the runway. What is the hardest part about being a model? Being too short. A lot of the designers know me but sometimes they can’t use me because I’m not the average 6 feet and over model yet.

Where Style Meets Vintage

Are there any super models in the industry that inspire you? If so, who? Yes, I’m very inspired by Tyra Banks and I was so honored to be invited on her shows, also Naomi Campbell and Iman.

with Bridal Stylist Lerkia Lee

Who else have you worked with in the Fashion industry? I have worked with a lot of upcoming designers and fashion show producers in and out of my community.

20FASHIONPAPERONLINE.COM

Do you ever practice? If so, what techniques do you use to help you prepare? Sometimes I do, especially if I have a lot of shows lined up. I just put on a nice runway beat and practice in my basement in front of a mirror for about an hour.

It is often said that a model should have a good personality. According to you, what are the traits required to being humble and having a good personality as a super model? My mom taught me to always smile and be courteous to people. Sometimes I’m tired, especially after doing a big show. But I still try to be nice because people always want to take pictures and talk to me. So it’s always nice to have a good personality. How do you handle school and your modeling career? Is it hard or challenging at times? Well since I’ve been doing it so long it’s easy for me to handle going to school and my modeling. Most of my shows and traveling is done on the weekends and then its right back to school on Monday. And when I’m doing Fashion Week during the week in February & September I take half days from school. But that still doesn’t interfere with my school. How do your peers treat you at school? Is it hard going to school and being Diva Davanna? No it’s not hard being Diva Davanna in my school, because a lot of my peers and friends I’ve been knowing for years, so they treat me like a regular student which I like. They support me a lot and get excited when they see me on TV or in the big fashion shows. But we are all best friends. Your mom expressed to me that you were not with a modeling agency just yet because you are only 14. When you turn 16 do you plan to be a part of a modeling agency and if so which one? When I turn 15 or 16 I would love to get with an agency like Ford or Elite models in NYC. So do you have any brothers or sisters? If so, which and how many? I have an older brother name Darryl, an older sister name Ashley and my twin sister Dejohnna. Davanna, you have recently stepped into the “Fashion Game” as a fashion designer, can you tell me what does it feel like to be designing your own clothing line? I really enjoy sewing. I get to go shopping for fabrics that I like. I buy all sorts of fashion magazines so I can get ideas and when I get to show my collection in shows I get to make something cool for myself. What inspired you to start a fashion line? I always wanted to design my own clothing. Since I have walked for so many designers it just inspired me to want my own line. So my mom said once I graduate from the 8th grade I could start designing. Once I graduated I started sketching and with the help of my granny who is a seamstress, she began giving me sewing lessons until I was able to create some designs on my own. Since I started sewing, I have made 2 children lines and 3 adult lines. I’m now working on my fall/winter 2015 clothing line. Are there fashion designers that inspire you?

Yes, Vera Wang, Marco Marco, Alexander McQueen, Zac Posen and the list goes on. Where do you see yourself in 4 years? In 4 years I will be 18, so I want to attend a fashion design school and hopefully signed to a major agency in hopes of getting my fashion line on high fashion runways or maybe in a nice boutique. What inspired you to write your book, The Importance of Being Prepared for School? Because, I have so many followers I began to realize the impact I had on lives in and out of the communities, and knowing the ability I had to make a difference and impact youth. I decided I wanted to “pay it forward”. With the help of family and friends I wanted to form my own yearly event which allowed me to donate hundreds of school supplies. The event was a great success in 2012 donating over 400 book bags filled with supplies and nearly 600 in 2013. After that I wanted to write a book about “The Importance of Being Prepared for School”, in hopes the book will help to educate and spread the word on the importance of school.

What encouraging words do you have for my readers who are trying to break into the modeling world? Never let people tell you that you’re too young. You can do anything at any age to fulfill your dreams. And you always have to do your research on events and never pay money to people if they ask for money. You don’t always have to be with an agency to get booked for great events because I’m not signed yet. Besides modeling, what are some of your hobbies? (just having fun) I love to hang with my sisters and my friends, going to the movies and skating. I love to talk on the phone. Do you have any upcoming events that you would like to share with our readers? I will be showing my clothing collections at a huge music festival in my hometown at Newark Idol 2014. Also showing in Syracuse Fashion Weekend 2014 and Harlem Fashion Week 2014 just to name a few. 21FASHIONPAPERONLINE.COM

Carrie Booker “Davanna’s Mom” Talks Parenting When did you discover Davanna’s gift in modeling and Entrepreneurship. I actually didn’t know Davanna had a gift in modeling, until a friend of mine (Timotheus Smart) who was my make-up artist & modeling trainer for my fashion shows I used to produce when Davanna was just 3 yrs old. He saw the modeling gift in her and began to train/ work with Davanna over the years and the rest is history. Entrepreneurship...With Thousands of fans around the world, Davanna began to see the direct impact she had on lives in and out of her community, realized it was time to “pay it forward”. Therefore, she seized every opportunity to mobilize, create alliances and took her visions and passion and came up with a way to give back in her Newark, NJ community with donating hundreds of school supplies in 2012, 2013 and gearing up for 2014. How much are you involved in your daughters career? I’m involved 100%. All Davanna’s booking, interviews, and fashion events come through mom first before any decisions are made. 24FASHIONPAPERONLINE.COM

How important do you think it is for parents to be involved with their children goals and hobbies? Especially being a minor, it’s VERY important for parents to be involved in their child’s goals and hobbies because it all starts from home. We as parents set a path for our children until they are able to walk it alone. Therefore, each stone we lay should be of good guidance, respect, encouragement, the right education, and prayerfulness all in hopes of setting the right goals and hobbies in the end. How many siblings does Davanna have and how do you maintain balance between them and Davanna being that she is always in the spotlight. Davanna has 3 other siblings, 2 out of 4 are older therefore, my main focus is Davanna & her twin sister Dejohnna. The balance over the years has not always

been easy but as they say “team work makes the dream work.” So having a great circle of hands can balance any job.

Ms. Booker, how do you balance Davanna’s career, your career and also being a parent and raising Davanna’s other siblings? I often say this to people; I take it one day at a time. Being a single working mom with a full time 9-5 job, that comes first, then all else falls in line…I don’t overwhelm her with bookings or out of town events because at some point balance is needed first. Church, school, as well as family time and structure are required to maintain that balance. Do you have a certain parenting style with your children? If so, can you share it with us? Prayer is the strongest form of style we offer in our household. I don’t try to offer any parenting styling, because most parents don’t like anyone to judge their children or give parenting advice. When I am confronted by other parents which I’m always approached or receiving emails or inboxed questions, it’s mostly asking the questions how to get my child in the business. My advice is “this business is not for everybody.” I never encourage parents to get their children in the spotlight. Ms. Booker, how do you keep Davanna grounded? I guess I’m from the old school, born and raised in Greenville, Mississippi, where you respected yourself as well as others especially your elders. I instill that in all my children and that has allowed my children to be grounded.

a manager and this could sometimes bring on hard decisions in this business. What’s the biggest misconception about parenting a child in show biz? The biggest misconception is that my showbiz child doesn’t go through the same things as a non showbiz child. Showbiz children deal with a lot, especially through social networks, sometimes school bulling and sometimes it’s hard for them to fit in. That’s why it’s so important to keep showbiz children as grounded as possible. What advice would you give to other parents that want to start their children on a path in show business? Do your own research, try your hand at managing your own child/children, keep a close tight team within your circle. A great team makes for an awesome Dream!!!!!

Can you tell us about her twin sister rapping career and how you have managed to balance both of your daughters’ careers? Yes, Dejohnna, aka Missy Dee, is an upcoming rapper, she has already done several events as well as the popular night club called SOB’s in NYC. She will be hitting the Apollo Theatre stage on August 27th in NYC. Dejohnna has been working on her rapping for nearly two years but finally decided she was ready to perform in public. The same applies for Dejohnna we don’t overwhelm her with bookings or out of town events so the balance equals out. Who has been your go-to person for advice? My best friend Timotheus Smart, sometimes I say I don’t know what I would have done without him for his advice I needed within Davanna’s career. What is the hardest part of parenting and managing Davanna’s career? The hardest part of parenting in this business is sometimes you can lose focus of being a parent and the manager light bulb comes on. Decisions have to be made as a parent not 25FASHIONPAPERONLINE.COM
