Shcikita Thomas

We recently sat down with Fashion Model Drew Lindsay, from Dallas, Texas in an interview about the life of a Fashion Model and how she balances it with her passion for the Culinary Arts.

“BREAST WARRIOR” “Shcikita Thomas” They call her the BREAST WARRIOR! The 39-year-old mother of 4 was diagnosed with Stage 4 Triple Negative breast cancer giving only months to live. Her courage and strength have truly inspired us all.

“After hearing reports that Shcikita had only a couple of months to live, she decided to stand up and take matters into her own”

I

t all started when the beautiful and vibrant 39-year-old mother of 4 went for a regular checkup. On her visit, she was alarm when doctors delivered a daunting diagnosis that no woman would ever want to her. She was diagnosed with Stage 4 Triple Negative breast cancer. Given no hopes of surviving this monster disease, doctors told her that surgery at this stage would not help it was too serious. In August of 2017, they projected that she wouldn’t survive through Christmas. The mother of four would spend out the rest of her days in hospice care. What is triple negative breast cancer? National Breast Cancer. Org stated that (http://www.nationalbreastcancer.org/triple-negative-breast-cancertriple) triple negative breast cancer is the three most common types of receptors known to fuel most breast cancer growth–estrogen, progesterone, and the HER-2/neu gene– are not present in the cancer tumor. This means that the breast cancer cells have tested negative for hormone epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER-2), estrogen receptors (ER), and progesterone receptors (PR). Since the tumor cells lack the necessary receptors, common treatments like hormone therapy and drugs that target estrogen, progesterone, and HER-2 are ineffective. Now after hearing that she had only a couple of months to live and there was nothing the doctors could do to save her life. Shcikita decided to stand up and take matters into her own hands. She was not going to bow down and accept the daunting

report of the doctors. She was not going to just accept defeat and lay down and die without a fight. She made a bucket list and one of her dreams was to become a model and have a professional photo shoot. Her dream and an opportunity of a lifetime came to past after her dream hit the ears of celebrity photographer Pherel Phillips. Not only did she get her dream of becoming a model and having a professional photo shoot, the 39 years old beauty story caught the attention of a Houston Television Station. Shcikita story, radiance and beauty inspired and captivated the hearts of viewers around the world. She continues to fight as the “Breast Warrior” She has also created a video vlog on social media to document the process of her fight with triple negative breast cancer and raise awareness of being checked before the age of 40. She also continues to raise awareness through radio shows, tv stations, blogs, and magazines. Another devastating blow came when her dearly beloved daughter Rio passed away yet she continued to fight. I came across this poem online and it really described Shcikita’s story. WHAT CANCER CAN’T DO It cannot cripple love, It cannot shatter hope, It cannot corrode faith, It cannot destroy peace, It cannot kill friendship, It cannot suppress memories, It cannot silence courage, It cannot invade the soul, It cannot steal eternal life. It is our mission to continue to stand with Shcikita and others in the fight against breast cancer knowing that cancer can never conquer Faith hope and the love that we have for each other.

LIFE STYLE EDITOR JAMBRIA TAKES ON NEW YORK FASHION WEEK!

L

et’s just say my trip to New York was everything but boring. From missed flights to taking the subway the wrong direction for over 30 minutes, I should have done a bit more research on traveling to the Big City. My first day of New York I purchased a site-seeing pass from Groupon and visited the must-see landmarks, museums, and buildings of New York. I took a tour of the National September 11 Memorial and Museum, and walked through the SoHo neighborhood to tour the art galleries and to observe the inner-city gentrification and cultural developments. The beautiful arch ways and European finishing’s of the town gives New York it’s authentic look. I visited the Top of the Rock observation deck to observe Central Park and Midtown, and attended street events on Times Square. To save

18 Fashionpaperonline.com

money, I recommend a loaded MetroCard to the subway, and tennis shoes to foot it to your destinations. Yellow Cab and Uber rates are outrageously priced due to the high demand. For GPS, of course I used my smartphone, but also always have an old fashion paper map on hand just for backup. Siri makes mistakes, too. Fortunately, I chose to visit New York during Fashion Week and got to attend the Couture Fashion Week Fashion Show at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Times Square. I captured photos of Vietnam Designer Van Valentines Couture Collection and observed lots of street style photography sessions. Mixed and cultured, there was a bar for everyone in Manhattan. Every corner you turned there was a food truck with an awesome menu, and no matter where you bought your pizza it tasted homemade with the right amount of grease and toppings. My last day in New York, I woke up bright and early to beat all the Brooklyn Bridge traffic (tourists and joggers) to capture photos of New York from the bridge. From the New York-style pizza and cheesecake to the unpredictable weather, New York City culture is everything it is said to be. The city really does not sleep.
