THE BIG INTERVIEW Ekaterina Belinskaya

We caught up with an inspirational fashion photographer - Ekaterina Belinskaya A winner of the Best Photographer 2011 (1st place in Advertising Photography Awards). Ekaterina’s work can be seen in "The Best of Russia" exhibition since 2012. Ekaterina tells us about her inspirations, ambitions, currently used gear, favourite shoots to date and what drives her to be successful. She currently works between Moscow, Paris, Milan shooting advertising campaigns and editorials for a variety of fashion magazines around the world. www.ekaterinabelinskaya.com

Fashion Shift Magazine | SPRING 2014

F*SHIFT: How did your journey with fashion photography begin? What made you shoot fashion? EKATERINA: It started like a game. Since I got my very first digital camera I fell in love with photography. I was taking pictures of almost everything (at the age of 19), then I started to create portraits of my friends at home studio. I've created accessories, dresses, doing make up by myself. After couple of years, I recognized that this passion can become my career and it's the thing I want to do in my life. Then I started to work with a team of professional make-up artists, stylists, model agencies. That's how the first steps started. I think my photography is more art than fashion. Amazing clothes and accessories we use in the stories make it fashionable. F*SHIFT: What drives you to be successful in fashion photography? EKATERINA: Vision, style, mood. To find your own unique style, be the best in what you do and be honest with yourself is the best way of being successful.

F*SHIFT: What has been your favourite shoot to date and why? EKATERINA: So many, I can’t choose only one. The most favorites: the underwater story (the winner of The Best of Russia 2013) and “Burn away”. I made these shoots with fashion designer Alisa Gagarina and model Elena Mitinskaya. They’re never afraid to take risks, love them! And I can name “Pulse” or “Breath of butterfly” shoots as one of my favorites. My journey into video production started with this shoot. It was a collaboration with fashion designer Maria Daranova. She created a paper dress especially for the story. F*SHIFT: How do you go about organising a shoot? EKATERINA: It depends. Organising commercial and personal shoots is different. But everything starts with the mood board/reference. After keeping ideas in mind you and your team starts discussing about the model, make-up, location etc. Every part is important to create a unique story.

Fashion Shift Magazine | SPRING 2014

www.ekaterinabelinskaya.com

F*SHIFT: How do you feel about retouching your work? Do you do it yourself or work with professional retouchers? EKATERINA: I wish one day I will find a person who can retouch the series by one sample with the mood I wanted. But for now, all editing work I do by myself. The most important part is color correction. Color makes the mood. I’m not a big fan of spending time with a computer, so while shooting I am trying to make photos as finals… the less photoshop you have to do, the better result, in my opinion. F*SHIFT: Who are your biggest inspirations? Whose work do you love and follow? EKATERINA: T.Walker and P.Roversi are my true inspiration. Almost every shoot they’ve made - I love. F*SHIFT: We have seen your work in many wellknown magazines. Where would you like to see your images being published in 5 years’ time?

EKATERINA: In 5 years… I hope to see my works published worldwide in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Numero, Interview, Wonderland; I love their style and mood. F*SHIFT: Talk us thorough your gear. What is your favourite lens? EKATERINA: I prefer fixed lenses. My favorite is 50 mm 1.2, 135 mm 2.0 and I use Canon 5D Mark II. Recently I discovered for me nice lens Samyang 14mm 2.8-22 f for Canon. I use it for video shoots, but for photography also it gives an interesting result. F*SHIFT: Have you got any advice for aspiring fashion photographers? EKATERINA: Love what you do! Never stop to learn! Find and develop your own style and vision! Never-never give up and be prepared for the ups and downs. Be inspired! Good luck!

A Step Back To A Better Time - Dressing Like A True Lady by Sophie Rashad

H

ave you ever paid close attention to just how much ladies fashion has evolved? Did you ever really question how short skirts in the swinging sixties acceptably turned into ripped jeans and a plain tee? Because I’m sure many of us fashionistas would agree, from time to time, we all become slightly tired of just the same old mediocre look. You can’t deny, dressing casually is doing absolutely nothing but dulling our fashion senses. The thought of innocent pearls, pretty patterns and classy dresses does make you melt a little inside. And looking back at the Marilyn Monroe days makes us all die with envy. Well thankfully I come only with good news to spill. The ‘Lady’ was never dead and gone, she just lost her way. And as a matter of fact, there are still many pieces out there every season that are perfectly lady like. Who do you have to thank? The brilliant influences of three women who gave fashion a whole new perspective for their time. www.sophierashad.com

Fashion Shift Magazine | SPRING 2014 That’s So Jackie O... Jackie O America’s first lady, or you may know her as JFK’s wife. Either way, she was iconic in the fashion world back in the 60’s. Being one of the first women to truly start embracing Chanel’s designs, she surely made a statement showcasing her garments at the many major events she attended. And nor was she ever afraid to wear the same thing twice, oh what a wonderful lady. So if you were wondering what Jackie’s precious secret was, staying feminine was most definitely key. She was very rarely ever photographed in trousers, and stayed mainly to what she knew best which happened to be pencil skirts, boxed blazers, and of course many, many dresses; which is femininity that is quite frankly absent in today’s day and age. She never revealed much skin or her body shape either as she never particularly wore tight clothes making her stay stunningly mysterious and classy. If you truly analyse all of her looks you will come to the realisation just how simple her style was. No heavy patterns - only block colours which were mainly pastels. The light pinks, the baby blues, spring yellow, and fresh creams. Not that she needed these summer colours to shine. Like a true blue blood, she only indulged in pearls, hats and silk white gloves all which were accessories that suited a highly respectable manner for a presidential lifestyle. Yet still being a fashion killer for her time. Her clothes sure had the world cast under her spell. Why do you think tweed jackets have been in style year after year? She is why pastels return every spring. Just take a look around because they’re glimmering on every catwalk and taking over shops this season.

All Hail Audrey... Yes I can read your mind; someone so beautiful does not need to have such impeccable style either because surely that would be an injustice. But she certainly did. And through her many legendary Hollywood movies she sure set a trend of her own giving style in her time a little twist of masculinity in the most elegant way humanly possible. Audrey was never a big fan of colour and unlike Jackie, always stuck to the blacks, navy blue, whites and very neutral tones. Rumour has it she never liked being centre of attention and chose her plain colours as a way to opt out from being in the spotlight. Patterns were only seen in the occasional dresses she wore, but mainly she modelled the fitted cropped trousers, polo neck jumpers and stiff shirts – which is precisely what made her style so different for women in her day. She favoured minimal accessories, wearing just one statement necklace at a time, rather than multiple pieces because it never occurred to her to try hard. The beauty often wore headbands and scarves tied around her head too, just as a brief reminder to the world that she was still a lady throughout her smart style. Fur was also something which was associated with Audrey, as she showcased many fur hats as well as fur coats throughout the years. And who can say no to fur even if it’s faux when winter approaches? Being so uber chic with her understated accessories, there is certainly nothing more attractive than the self assurance Audrey carried throughout, and if you’re wondering how you can still grasp this elegance you only have to open your eyes. Because simple classic pieces are repeatedly on the catwalk, you may just need the confidence to combine them correctly.

Queen Marilyn... It’s safe to say that we all love her, and would all almost certainly dress identically if we had a doll like face ,and curves to fit perfection. But what was it that made Marilyn so special? She oozed glamour and confidence and self assurance in the most delightful way was her best accessory. Most of her statement pieces included many recognised glamorous dresses that have gone down in fashion history, and she undoubtedly was never afraid to go over the top. She was often seen wearing bright red lipsticks and the most colourful dresses making her the only one to admire in the room; centre of attention doesn’t even come close. The fashion legend never particularly needed any great accessories as the diamond jewels and beads on her outfits said enough. She was no Plain Jane that’s for sure, and this goddess dressed as though each day were her last, and was well known to not be afraid to show a little cleavage or skin on the correct occasion. But how does she affect today’s style? Marilyn pushed the boundaries and it’s essential for all designers to take a risk. Deep V neck dresses, shirts revealing just a hint of side boob most definitely evolved from her. Marilyn defined her own version of a lady, her outspoken style had never been seen in the fashion world. If you’re hoping to grasp a drop of essence from her style, keep your eyes peeled for the iconic pieces that might just give you the little extra lady attention you need.

anish Fashion Week 2014 grasped every visitor feeling their toes turning into icing stiletto sculptures. It was cold. There was snow and furs. However Danish Fashion Week's greatest sponsorship is held by Kopenhagen Fur with the annual official Press Conference show opening at the City Hall. While Dolce&Gabbana pulled off a medieval Narnia scene of elves, knights & saints wardrobe in Milan, we saw a strong metallic vibe parading in shining armour on the Danish catwalk with a scent of red- orange breaking through. Denmark's pride in dressing royalties such as their Crown Princess Mary as well as Kate Middleton in Danish label By Malene Birger carries on but from now on without founder & lead creator Malene Birger herself. Earlier this year she announced she will step down from her key role in the company in order to focus on developing future creative projects for her new design company Birger1962, set to launch this year. Malene Birger with her creative team fired off one last distinctive yet a slight contemporary mixture of soft knitted sweaters, tailored leather jackets cutting edges with high collar shining sequined pullovers. All set under the title ''All that jazz''. Stine Goya threw an aesthetic sculptural collection with shapes interpreted from one of the 20th century’s most influential sculptors, Constantin Brancusi & contemporary artist Ruby Sky Stiler, into club atmosphere in fluorescent lighting at the Stock Exchange. We saw gold foil prints & ornate embroidery in a harmony of shades of grey, off-white & beige, black, royal & ice blues, green & magenta accented with golden details.

My personal favorite is as always the one &

only Henrik Vibskov. His universe of making every catwalk an imaginary vivid art installation takes us very far showing fashion from above as a greater story to be told in unfolded impressions even after the show was over. As always he chooses the most inaccessible industrial locations to pull off his shows. Some of us gave up & went back to the press bus that brought us there. “The Spaghetti Handjob’’ was set in a cold warehouse with imaginative decors of handmade pasta in mint green hanging from the ceiling & stretched in courses on the floor. It’s a spaghetti workshop & Henrik Vibskov is the pasta maker. The runway was a walk in graphic patterns with details in red-orange & mint green, knitted fabrics voven in a special technique inspired by the development process of pasta & voluminous coats with his characteristic rounded shoulders.

Henrik Vibskov’s inspiration & references this season comes not only from studying the process of making pasta but also from arctic igloo’s, auto parts, Russian armored fighters & firefighters. Backstage after the show the avant-garde designer himself enjoyed a beer while talking to ELLE tv China like a pure Dane citizen! By Malene Birger provides AW14 metallic arm wristlets & body chains with large pieces of healing stones as significative outfit assets while Henrik Vibskov's partly knitted helmets & ski boots pulls off a further perspective on futuristic armours. A label to be forecasted as a trendsetter this year would be the Danish duo Claire/Anastasia with their handmade jewelry pieces handcrafted out of screw-nuts. It's a rustic masculine meltdown of rawness combining ''nuts & bolts''. Metallic is made to resemble metal & color meaning of gold carries on wisdom & wealth while red-orange is a thirst of action. An appealing thought from AW14 would be a fashion reflection of hope for a better world economy? A less appealing thought is a prediction of a forthcoming metal crisis?

B

obo-chic is a retro bohemian and hippy look that hit the streets of Park Lane and Piccadilly in 2004, sported by British Fashion Icons Kate Moss and Sienna Miller. Short for bourgeoisbohemian, the looks are seasonally transitional and a mix of pattern, color and texture - a collection that’s equal parts Francophile charm and So-Cal casual . A comfortable, casual, yet edgy look that can often seem as if no effort has been put in to the attire, even though the pieces selected have been paired intentionally and with purpose.

I

t was in the year 2000 that David Brooks, the NY Times columnist, wrote a book: Bobos In Paradise: The New Upper Class and How They Got There. Brooks’ book was subject of an interview with Gwen Ifill on NPR the year it was published. (http:// www.pbs.org/newshour/gergen/jan-june00/brooks_5-9.html). Brooks describes “Bobos” as the cultural result of the “information age”. Quoting from his own review in the NY Times of his own book, Brooks says about Bobos: “These are highly educated folk who have one foot in the bohemian world of creativity and another foot in the bourgeois realm of ambition and worldly success. The members of the new information age elite are bourgeois bohemian. Or, to take the first two letters of each word, they are Bobos.” According to Brooks, Bobos are identified by having “rebel attitudes and social-climbing attitudes all scrambled together.”

s fashion reflects our inner attitudes, this bourgeois-bohème fusion style is favored by artists, designers, musicians, and other creatives who epitomize a certain "je ne sais quoi" sense of Parisian nonchalance and cool. You may describe the style as “bohemian”, but it’s not exactly that. It’s rather a higher grade of the 1960s “hippy” generation with a uniqueness that makes it new. It’s a look that is flirty, yet puritan; dark, yet light; feminine, yet tight-laced; rich, yet peasant; fun; yet reserved; elegant, yet simple.
