Zero Waste Kitchen: easy ways to reduce your food waste London has long been hailed as one of the most diverse and exciting cities in the world when it comes to food and us Londoners sure do love our nosh. But do we follow mother’s advice and clear everything on our plates, or rather our fridges? Or does a large percentage of our weekly shop end up in the bin? Yes, we’re all guilty for doing a shop and then being enticed into after work drinks and dinner, fully knowing we have a fridge full of food about to go out of date at home. Food waste has become a hot topic over the last few years, both for those trying to save money and those trying to save the planet. Instagram is now full of ‘zero wasters’ sharing their apparently zero waste lifestyle with us. Yet, despite this increase in awareness the amount of edible food we bin in the UK each year continues to rise; currently sitting at 7.3 million tonnes. When we waste food, it is not only the end product that goes to waste, so does everything it takes to get that food into our fridges; the water, the land, the money. Possibly the most astonishing fact of all; 24% of global agricultural freshwater is used to grow food that is never eaten. What’s more if global food waste was a country, it would have the largest carbon footprint after the US and China. Many respected sources now believe that, as our climate continues to change, the next world war will be fought over water. If that’s not motivation enough to cut down your food waste I don’t know what is. But we’re busy, and we don’t want to miss out on a spontaneous few wines and dinner with the pals at that great little pop-up in Soho. And why should we!
The clever people at Santa Barbara-based start-up Apeel Sciences say that they have invented edible coatings that can extend a fruit or vegetable’s shelf life by as much as five times. That means, if you spray it on a strawberry that’s starting to look past its best it will last about a week longer than normal. Made of leftover plant skins and stems from organic produce, the coatings act as barriers that slow down the decay process. To reap these miraculous results two different coatings must be applied to combat the factors that cause decay: 1. Edipeel - keeps water from leaving the produce and oxygen from entering 2. Invisipeel - keeps insects away Pretty amazing stuff! Unfortunately for us these wonder coatings are still being tested and not yet available for purchase, so, until they come to the masses I guess we’ll stick with some more traditional ways of reducing food waste. Our top 5 tips below: 1. SHOP MINDFULLY The weekly shop. Always seems like a good idea; plan your meals for the week, make resolutions to eat healthy and stay home every evening to save your hard earned cash. It never happens does it and that thinking can be unnecessarily wasteful. Shop for the food you need for the day; not only does this mean the food you eat is fresher, it saves food sitting around and spoiling. Shopping mindfully and in small quantities saves both money and the excessive paper and plastic of family-sized packaging.
2. USE AND RE-USE There are many parts of vegetables that we typically do not use; for example, those that grow in the ground have leafy shoots growing above ground that have great nutritional value. Purchase your veg with these shoots on and use them in other recipes such as smoothies and soups for a nutrient boost. You can also use inedible vegetable scraps, like stems, to make stocks. And if you’re a lucky city dweller with some green space, use your scraps to grow new plants. Pineapples, garlic, potatoes, and other plants can regenerate with little effort. 3. COMPOST We know it’s likely you don’t have a garden but we do know that often grocers, restaurants, city farms or community gardens accept your leftovers to create healthy soil for new food. Community composting is one of the most sustainable ways of managing food waste. Once you’ve found somewhere, store your waste vegetables and fruit in bags in the freezers and once you’ve accumulated a good stash take it down. 4. ADOPT A PLANT-BASED DIET We hear a lot of propaganda around the need for humans to eat meat a certain amount of times per week to get enough protein but, the truth is, humans are not biologically designed like carnivores. Humans who eat animal products don’t generally eat all parts of the animal and the remaining bits often get wasted. In fact, we can get all the nutrients we need from a balanced plant based diet and reduce our waste output significantly. 5. GET CREATIVE If leftovers remain then we say get creative and concoct an original recipe to use them in. It’s amazing the tasty meals that can be created from seemingly unusable ingredients. YOGA: An Antidote for Modern-Day Living Since she was 14 years old, Sarah has been spiritually aware, but it wasn’t until 10 years ago that she made a conscious decision to devote herself to spiritual practices, using yoga as “the perfect antidote to modern day living”. She shares her belief that by steering away from the pressures of external materials, relationships and status, instead “yoga asks us to redirect our awareness inside of ourselves. And this is radical – as I’ve progressed in my journey, I’ve come to experience a deeper guiding presence within me and a greater sense of peace and self-acceptance. It’s because of this that I’m doing what I’m doing; teaching yoga and creating tools of transformation”.
MAGIC MALAS: From Archaeology to Yoga In today’s way of life we are often caught in between life’s rush, struggling for direction and in need of inspiration to spark change. For many, yoga has been a fundamental element in this awakening. Fashion Shift Magazine had the pleasure of gaining a glimpse into Dr. Sarah Coxon’s intriguing life journey from an archaeologist turned yoga-teacher and jewellery-designer. After years of researching, digging and uncovering the ancient world, Sarah’s life reached a turning point. Veering into a road less travelled, she followed her intuition from what started as a whisper and then became her true calling. In many ways, archaeology helped shape the way she teaches yoga. Never losing sight of that initial sense of wonder towards life, learning from the stories of the past and being constantly driven by the thrill of facilitating people’s transformative journeys. Her approach shows that people can embody different things and still find a focus. As Sarah expresses, society’s expectations and labelling tendencies can be challenging throughout such journeys, where “it can be so hard to follow your heart’s calling... But there comes a time when you grow tired of letting fear dictate your life… when you believe wholeheartedly in what you’re doing, it’s infectious and people tend to also be on board”.

PHILIPPINES: Living without urgency It was while living and teaching yoga in the tropical islands of the Philippines for a year that the concept of Magic Malas first emerged - consciously-handcrafted natural gemstone jewellery, “sourced and created to empower you on your journey”. Through Sarah’s eyes the Philippines was a magical place that taught her the importance of community and being in nature. It was a place where you could escape life’s rush, “there was never any sense of urgency – such a beautiful way to live”. PACHAMAMA: Re-connecting with Nature

Sometimes we just need to escape the pressures of life’s sense of urgency and expectations… to spark our creative imagination… or to simply seek some peace of mind. To re-connect with life’s balance, Sarah finds solace in Nature, “The forest. The ocean. Lakes. Rivers. It is so important to find that connection. You begin to realise that we are all part of something much greater than just our individual selves”. Both archaeology and yoga have taken Sarah around the world, further fueling her passion for travelling, experiencing cultures and being immersed in nature. Where to next? Currently she is living in Portugal, to which she adds that “for now, my heart is here. But I do feel an irresistible pull to go back to South America – I feel a strong connection with Pachamama [Mother Earth] and would like to explore that within Andean culture when the time is right”.
Yoga can be a guiding force for people going through life uncertainties and anxieties. Like an intuitive compass, it can drive them to move forward, pursue their passions and find balance in life’s ever-changing flow. Sarah’s message to other curious soul-searchers: “Surround yourself with the inspiring stories of others. Read biographies. Watch documentaries. Ride on their courage and every once in a while, take a few moments out of your day to go within and know that
everything you read is already within you”.

Regular facials with steam are excellent skin care treatments that promote deep cleansing of pores. They increase circulation to the face while giving that overall glowing complexion. Clogged pores are one of the key contributing factors to acne breakouts, including blackheads, whiteheads, and other certain skin infections. Whether you suffer from acne or have blemish-free skin, one of the best ways to cleanse facial pores is to steam your face. The warm steam causes your face to sweat, which opens the pores and helps soften the surface layer of dead skin cells, releasing dirt and debris that could be trapped in pores and lead to breakouts. Our bodies naturally produce sebum, an oily substance which protects and lubricates the skin, but when it becomes stuck in our follicles, breakouts can occur. Your face softens when you steam it, loosening pores and allowing for extraction of blackheads, etc. from the surface of the skin by releasing them from follicular openings. While this process can help improve mild acne, those who suffer from severe acne or skin conditions like rosacea should consult a doctor before using an at home facial steam. Another benefit of steaming your face is that it triggers blood vessels in the skin to dilate so that more blood can flow into the skin, which delivers oxygen and nutrients to the tissue and gives the dewy rosy look. But it’s important not to sabotage yourself by not maintaining a lifestyle that maintains glowing skin. Here are the steps for getting the best results for a clean face:

LEANSING: Cleansing your skin first is necessary to unclog pores. Start with a fresh, clean face. After steaming, it will be easier for you to remove comedones such as blackheads, whiteheads and small pimples. When you steam your face, you open up your pores. If you don’t cleanse first, makeup, sweat, dirt, debris, etc. is more likely to get into your pores, causing clogging which can lead to possible breakouts.

XFOLIATE: Gently exfoliate the skin with a light scrub in small circular motions. Make sure to focus on areas around the nose and forehead (basically the t-zone areas). If certain parts of your face are more oily than others, give those areas an extra bit of gentle scrubbing.

TEAM: After the cleansing process, steaming will cause the skin to soften and allow for pores to open more readily. This process makes it easier to extract impurities such as blackheads and whiteheads. Afterward, while pores are still open, any mask and serum you apply will be better absorbed into the skin, penetrating deeper and removing toxins. Steaming increases circulation in the skin while allowing your body to perspire and release toxins.

ASK: After steaming, a mask or any other topical solution will penetrate the skin deeper, allowing the mask to work more effectively. And if you suffer from acne, a charcoal mask can be a bonus in helping to extract impurities and excess oil from the skin.

OISTURIZE: Moisturizing with the right type of moisturizer as your last step will hydrate your skin. Always remember to apply a broad spectrum SPF (30 and above) sunscreen to protect from UV ray damage.

EALTHY NUTRITION: Healthy diet is a key component in a comprehensive program for maintaining beautiful, glowing skin. Let’s examine how sugar affects your skin. Sugar’s oxidative properties can provoke acne and breakouts. Sugar and foods high on the glycemic index (meaning foods that, once ingested, convert quickly into glucose and cause your body’s insulin levels to elevate) lead to a burst of inflammation that goes throughout your entire body. Foods high in sugar and saturated fats - like white bread, candy, fried foods, ice cream, sodas, and anything else with a main ingredient of sugar - cause spikes in your body’s insulin levels that further exacerbate inflammation. Steep insulin spikes increase the production of skin oils and contribute to the clogging of follicles, which can worsen skin complexion. Instead, choose foods with a lower glycemic index such as vegetables, or foods with natural sugars like fruit and whole grains. And don’t forget high fiber foods like whole grains; they help prevent acne by decreasing insulin spikes, which can lead to inflammation. These are just a few of the healthier foods that won’t cause those high spikes of insulin production in your body. And look at the Glycemic Index for different foods. You might be surprised at the positive effects of these healthy choices on your complexion.

Yoga is a delicate balance between strength and flexibility, meant to connect the mind, body and breath. It is important to master the basics and create a solid foundation in order to advance to the next level. Just as you wouldn’t try to squat 300 lbs during your first session at the gym, or try to do the splits during your first time in a gymnastics class, yoga should be treated in a similar fashion.
Since becoming a Yoga Instructor, it has become clear to me that there is a lack of awareness regarding safe teaching and practices. With photos of beautiful backbends and inversions posted all over social media, the idea of yoga’s purpose has been skewed. It is great to set high goals, but it is more important to have a strong and safe practice before attempting anything too advanced. Here are 10 ways how to help you get the most out of your next yoga practice: 1. WARM UP: Always start with a 10-15 minute warm up before beginning a yoga session. Choose dynamic stretches starting from the neck down through the back, shoulders, hips, wrists and ankles. Follow up these stretches with a few sun salutations and your body will be fully prepared to take on your session ahead. 2. CREATE BODY AWARENESS: Once the instructor has demonstrated a pose during class, focus on your own body and breath rather than looking at anyone else in the class. The more self-aware you become, the more you will feel and benefit from each pose. 3. USE A MIRROR: If you are practicing yoga at home or at the studio, checking yourself in the mirror is a great way to see how your body aligns in each asana. If the studio has a mirror, try to get a spot in front of the class. If you are too shy, choose an area where you can still see yourself clearly. This will allow you to make your own adjustments throughout the session. 4. TAKE SOME PHOTOS OR VIDEOS: To get a different perspective on your alignment, have a friend or family member snap photos or videos of you during your home practice. You can also set up a camera or phone and take a video of yourself to review when you are done. This is such a great way to see movements and habits that you may not be able to catch while using a mirror! 76 FASHION SHIFT MAGAZINE
5. ALIGN YOURSELF: Many yoga poses align the body at 90 degree or 45 degree angles. Use the borders of your mat to help you visualize those angles so that you can better align yourself in each pose. You can also purchase a mat with printed lines and grids intended specifically to help with alignment and body placement. 6. GET FAMILIAR WITH PROPS: Props can be your best friends during a yoga practice if you know how you use them. Straps are great for forward folds or leg lifts. Blocks are great for forward bends, side bends, and arm balances. Cushions are great for support and edges are great for wrists and seated poses. Research how to use them or ask your instructor before class. I promise this will make a huge different in the way you practice yoga. 7. RESPECT YOUR LIMITS: Often times during a yoga class, the instructor will give options for more difficult variations of a pose. Although these variations are available, as a beginner, it is best to stay in the easier variation and maximize all of the benefits that it has to offer. If you are struggling during a class, never push yourself too far as it could lead to a potential injury. Once you can perform a posture with proper alignment, try a more difficult variation when you feel your body is prepared for the next step. 8. STUDY ALIGNMENT: If you are passionate about advancing your yoga practice, the best thing to do is research how each pose is supposed to be performed. If this is not attainable for you, research easier variations of the pose, or modifications for sensitive and inflexible areas. Instagram’s @yogaalignment is a great tool for learning more about alignment, modifications and variations. 9. GET A QUALIFIED SPOTTER: When attempting a balancing pose for the first time, have a yoga instructor direct you into and out of the pose while spotting you in case you fall. It’s great to have someone to help ensure your safety if you are putting yourself at risk- especially any poses involving the neck. Once you have succeeded a few times with a spotter, you can use a wall to help support you until you are ready to practice on your own. 10. ENJOY SHAVASANA: Even if you have to leave class early, always rest for a minimum of 3 minutes in Shavasana. This pose allows your body to take in all of the amazing benefits from the practice you have done. A yoga practice is never complete without Shavasana! Now that you know how to get the most out of your yoga practice, try to enjoy your yoga journey. Although it is easier said than done, try to enjoy wherever you are in your practice at this time. Anyone at any age, with any level of flexibility and strength can practice yoga! The more regularly you practice yoga, the more significant improvements you will notice in your body and mind.

NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY Words & Photography | Steven Lopez
“Oh Snap!Adventures” INTRO Whether you’re traveling or not, often times some of the most spectacular scenery you come across is at night. In this post, I’m going to share some insight into how I approach night photography and show you guys a few shots that I’ve taken throughout my travels. When you nail a nice night shot, it’s extremely rewarding and often makes for a much more vivid memory of the situation later on down the line. I would not dare to call myself an expert on this subject, but I would definitely say I’ve got enough experience to show you the ropes so you can start or maybe improve on yours.
CHILEAN STARS One of the coolest pictures I have ever taken of the stars was in the Atacama Desert in Chile. I went on a night tour in the middle of the desert where there was absolutely no light pollution. It was pitch black and freezing! However, the shots I got are pretty sweet, and the experience I had taking the shots was incredible! Check it out - to take long exposure shots like this you will need a tripod. Once I was set up on my tripod, these are the settings I used to capture my shot. I basically opened up the aperture and shutter as much as possible to capture all the light being projected by the stars. I set my ISO to where my photo would still come out decently. If you set it too high, depending on the camera you have, the photo can turn out really grainy. Not good for night shots. You can adjust the White Balance to whatever you want, but if you are shooting in RAW, it doesn’t matter too much as you can adjust that to your preference in photoshop! Here is my shot of the Milky Way, I hope you guys like it!
AUSTRALIA NIGHT I was in Perth, Australia a little while ago for a conference and visiting some family. One night, my wife and I were taken up to a beautiful park that overlooked the city. From this point the views were incredible and pretty colorful too! I had no choice but to whip out my camera and tripod and go for it! I think it worked out pretty well overall. I really like when I can capture moving cars in my shots, because it displays a really cool laser effect that I think is very interesting. Luckily for me, I was able to do that in this picture along with capturing the city! This is definitely one of my favorite city shots. I hope you guys like it.
Lens: 18-55mm Settings: Image Quality: RAW ISO: 1600 (ideally I think it would be better to be at 3400 or 3600, but my camera doesn’t shoot well at those settings) Aperture: 4.6 Shutter Speed: 30 sec (long exposure)

Whenever I have a free night, one of my favorite things to do is to find a cool view of multiple freeways that I haven’t seen before and try to capture it! I usually drag my wife along for company so she can pass me my different lenses when I want to switch them out. She’s a trooper. What makes Freeway shots really cool is the traffic. As mentioned above, moving cars under long exposure give off a laser effect that is really fun to play with. If you’ve got the time and the patience, I definitely recommend trying it out. Here is a shot I took of a major freeway crossing in LA not too long ago. Lens: 18-55mm Settings: Image Quality: RAW ISO: 800 Aperture: 5.6 Shutter Speed: 30 sec (long exposure) White balance: (doesn’t matter when you shoot on RAW…it can always be edited.)
Night photography can be really fun and rewarding if you have the patience for it. It can also make you understand and feel a lot more confident about how your camera works. When showing your photos to people I find that they are often most impressed with these kinds of shots because of the effects and colors they display. I highly recommend giving it a shot. The Story of the Oho Harahe Collection Humility; a word which is greatly forgotten when the world needs it most, my collection was based upon a Japanese tradition called Oho Harahe which is one of the most important and sacred ceremonies of the Shinto religion. It occurs every 30 days of the sixth and 12th month of the year and its purpose is to purify and cleanse the body, mind and soul from pollution, sins and calamities. I believe that this is relevant to not only the world now but can be applied to both your personal and professional lives as well. I chose to use 4 figures representing all classes from histories social hierarchy which are the Geisha (Artesian), a Peasant (Lower Class Citizen), a Samurai (Government official [Middle Class Citizen]) and an Empress (Royalty [First Class Citizen]). I did this to show that no one is above faith and humanity, to reiterate that everyone sins at some point and that it is important to reflect on our past and to forgive ourselves for what we have done wrong.
