CHLOÉ ORIGAMI Words by Carmen Obied
Unfolding ideas to fold paper... ORIGAMI: LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT Creativity expresses itself in many diverse forms. Do you remember all those times folding paper aeroplanes with friends as a kid? Or playing the ‘fortune teller’ game? The ancient craft of Origami (‘folding paper’) emerged in Japan, but has continued to evolve and be reinvented with advancing technologies around the world. Though its technique and symbolism may vary across space and time, what prevails is its creative potential to transform and reshape ideas through art and science intertwined. Fashion Shift had the pleasure of interviewing Portuguese origami designer Inês Lima, better known by her brand name Chloé Origami. Her brand emerged from her love of creating personalised gifts, and she her belief shares that “When I create a gift I not only make a piece that’s unique, but I also offer a part of me.” Constantly seeking new challenges through art, she had the unexpected pleasure years ago of experimenting with the art of Origami, and in her own words “Foi amor à primeira vista!” (It was love at first sight!). Through her experiences, she helps us understand the language of folding, capturing the imagination of the origami philosophy and its multi-faceted forms.
OVERCOMING OBSTACLES: PERSISTENCE Certain models can be challenging to learn, but Lima affirms that “it is nothing that persistence can’t fix!” The length of time to make a model usually depends on the level of difficulty - it could take 5 minutes … or 1 hour! The biggest obstacle lies in understanding the schema of the more complex models. When it comes down to basics, its allure is that anyone can try it, anytime, with just a piece of paper. And for those who truly master the geometrical complexity of the skill, the paper becomes intricately transformed, telling shifting stories between its layered folds. This practice can also boost patience, memory, and mindfulness. Origami goes beyond craftsmanship – it is good for the soul.
RESOURCES: PAPER... ALL KINDS OF PAPER! When asked what types of paper she prefers to use, Lima exclaimed “Todos os papéis!! (All the papers!!), jokingly adding that she finally has an “excuse” to bring home endless amounts! With time she has gained more practice and it has become increasingly easier to “control” the paper and understand which textures are the most suitable. Beyond mastering the technique, the choice of paper makes all the difference. Lima is full of new ideas for Chloé Origami that are ready to be put into practice, including trying some less likely materials.
INSPIRATIONS: OCCASIONS, PEOPLE & ELEPHANTS! Inspiration comes in various sources. For Lima, it could be a festive occasion, like Christmas, or a personalised frame for a child’s room, or the intricate combination of colours and textures between the diverse materials. She also draws inspiration from the artists Leyla Torres, Michael LaFosse (with his beautiful butterflies), and Falk Brito, amongst others. Her favourite creation is the elephant, which ended up defining the brand image of Chloé Origami, to which she adds “Ever since I folded this model I have completely fallen in love with elephants!”
ORIGAMI ADVICE: NEVER GIVE UP! Chloé Origami’s motto is ‘Unfolding ideas to fold paper’. In the end, her Origami represents passion and effort, paying attention to every little detail. At times, Lima even finds it hard to detach herself and to let go of some of her art pieces. Her message to other artists interested in this craft: “Artists will discover that from a simple piece of paper it is possible to create incredible things! It is a constant challenge. And never give up! It is an art that requires patience.”

“Determination, Resilience, Encapsulation, Ambition and Motivation” - J. Lyons The rooster symbolises traits associated with the bird such as ambition, pride, a desire to be admired, punctuality, courage, and passion. Roosters have been used for millennia across all cultures to announce the dawn and to awaken those sleeping. Red is the passion that heats us all, no matter the clothes we wear nor the country we live, nor the colours we see. Red is universal - a colour of love and passion and our fire within. We each play a role as transcultural creators during the year of the Fiery Rooster. We are the DREAM - taking the lead in shaking up the world to the importance of cross-cultural awareness and for the well-being of us as a whole. As we embrace this New Year, we should feel encouraged to heal any divisions with DREAM’ing - and remind the world of our shared humanity.

Wellness Bad Nutrition Habits we need to break WORDS: CHRISTINA ROSSO
Eating is second nature to us, but there are many learned habits that decrease our ability to digest which can impact many other areas of our overall health and wellbeing. Here are some of the habits that aren’t talked always discussed but I feel are necessary to change for optimal health. EATING ON THE GO We are all busy, and all have places to go and people to see. One thing we are neglecting is ourselves by not giving ourselves ample time to eat and properly digest a meal. I recommend sitting down and eating and giving yourself at least 20-30 minutes to eat. Take a few deep breaths before eating and keep your electronics off. Enjoy the taste, texture, smell and appearance of your food. Staying relaxed while eating will improve digestion and absorption of food, allow us to feel full and give us a well needed break from our sometimes hectic lives. DRINKING WITH MEALS It is okay to sip on a beverage here and there with a meal but having over 250ml during the course of a meal is not ideal. When we intake too much liquid during a meal, it dilutes the acid in our stomach and the digestive enzymes that are both needed to breakdown our food. If you feel the need to chug a glass of water in the middle of a meal, it is probably because you are dehydrated and have not been drinking enough throughout the day. It is best to drink 1-2 glasses of water up to 20 min before a meal so that it gives your body the ability to process the water before moving onto a solid meal. “INHALING” OUR FOOD This is a habit that sometimes falls under eating on the go, but can also be an everyday occurrence even if we are sitting down to a quiet meal. It is important that we eat slow and chew our food as much as possible. The mouth releases enzymes mostly for breaking down carbohydrates and cues other organs to release their enzymes. If these enzymes are not released it could hinder the way we digest and absorb our food. More importantly, if large chunks of food get to our stomach, our body has to work so much harder in order to break it down. Remember, our stomachs don’t have teeth, so it is important to chew our food to a paste- give it a try and feel the difference. AVOID STIMULANTS BEFORE MEALS Caffeine, nicotine, exercising and self-induced stress can put our bodies into the age old state of “fight or flight” where circulation surges to the extremities and away from the digestive process. This means that digestion halts anytime we smoke, drink coffee, exercise or are internally stressed. When the body is stressed, it decreases the amount
of acid produced by the stomach which is meant to break down food and kill any pathogens. A very common misconception is that caffeine and nicotine “help” have a bowel movement. This is actually a bad thing for the body as these substances cause the body to become overly acidic and eject the food from the body before it is able to properly digest. For post-workout, it is better to either wait 30-60 minutes for the heart rate to decrease, or have a liquid meal. USING LOW TEMPERATURE SMOKING POINT OILS FOR COOKING When we use oils that have a lower smoke point than the temperature they are actually being heated to, we are damaging the oils, creating toxic fumes and free radicals that can damage our lungs, arteries and many other cells in the body. This is one of the reasons that fried foods are so unhealthy as the oils are either old and/or have been heated to a temperature beyond their smoking points. When cooking, avoid deep frying and use products that contain a lot of saturated fat such as organic butter, coconut oil or avocado oil. Save the olive oil, walnut oil, sesame oils for sautéing at low temperatures or as toppings/dressings for foods. On a related side note: keep all nuts and seeds in the fridge and store oils in a tightly sealed container around room temperature or lower. These are a few tips that not many people are aware of but can make a huge impact on symptoms related mainly to digestion, but also all around health. By changing these habits you may notice a less bloating, gas, indigestion, stomach aches, and fatigue after meals. You may also notice more energy, better circulation and a more relaxed demeanor. It’s time that we pay more attention to the basic principles of eating and become more aware of our bodies as a whole. LA LA LANDSCAPES: Panoramic views of LA
“Oh Snap! Adventures” I recently made a big move back to Los Angeles with my fiancé and we have been exploring the city a lot! LA is great but it’s slightly different to a lot of other big cities because the city itself is very spread out! It can be kind of pain to travel across the city, but more often than not, the destination is worth it! If you saw one of the latest cinematic successes “LA LA Land”, it illustrated the essence of LA and LA dreamers extremely well, that’s ultimately why I think the film did so well and why it resonated with so many people. LA is beautiful and I want to tell you guys about some scenic places with panoramic views to check out if you ever find yourself heading this way. Some of the places I’ll mention are pretty popular in the area and some of them are hidden gems, but they’re all gorgeous! When you experience LA like this, you’ll begin to understand the people a bit more and appreciate the lifestyle that is so iconic in today’s world. It’s hard to beat the LA life! Check it out… DOWNTOWN I know that downtown might not sound adventurous, but if you’ve lived in or around LA within the last 15 years, you know how much downtown has developed! One of the coolest areas to roam around inside of downtown is definitely “LA Live”! This area broke ground in 2005 and wasn’t finished until October 2007. It is home to the Microsoft square, Microsoft Theatre, the Novo, Grammy Museum, ESPN Zone, and the Regal Entertainment Group. If you’re visiting LA definitely check it out and try to book an event here! It’s a lot of fun and the nightlife is amazing! There are lots of lights, big screens, clubs, bars, and food. If you get lucky… you might even spot a celebrity! Aside from that, if you want to relax in a scenic spot or escape the city rush without leaving the downtown area, check out Hermosa Park. It makes for a great picture and is perfect for getting a fresh breath of air when you need! HOLLYWOOD Of course, we can’t talk about LA and not mention Hollywood! It’s an incredible place that has attracted some of the most influential and creative people in the world in the entertainment industry. But apart from just walking down the Hollywood strip, Griffith Park is a beautiful next-door neighbor and it’s amazing! It houses the Griffith Observatory and the Hollywood sign and hiking there is by far the best way to experience these areas. There are incredible views all the way up and its very peaceful. It’s spots like these that give the city a healthy balance between chaos and peace, making it an amazing place to live! Griffith Park is part of the Santa Monica Mountains so don’t be fooled by the “Park” in the name, you’re going to want to wear some hiking shoes for this adventure. Show it no fear! There are trails for all levels of hikers. Take some water, pack a small lunch and go enjoy the day overlooking the city from the wilderness. SANTA MONICA BEACH Santa Monica is an LA classic. The beaches are lively, the people are great, and when the sun is shining (which is most of the time) it really is one of the best places to be if you like the beach. There’s a promenade nearby just in case you want to eat or do some shopping while you’re in the area, and there’s also the Santa Monica Pier! The pier is great if you’ve never been before, and if you catch the sunset from end of it, you’ll never forget it. If you’re lucky, the sky will be painted with bright purple and pink hues! There is also a beach bike path that runs up to Malibu and down to Venice alongside the Pacific Coast Highway. If you’re into beach bike riding, this is definitely something worth doing. Life always seems a bit better after a ride by the sea.
A FEW BONUSES! I hang around Culver City quite a bit, and have recently come to discover that it has some really cool local spots for escaping the city life momentarily. Baldwin Hills scenic overlook is one of the less known cityscape overlooks, that’s great for a break. It’s a good short workout and it’s great for photography! If you find yourself eager to venture out a bit further, you should definitely explore the Topanga Mountains! I recently did a cool hike up to Eagle Rock there, there were a number of streams along the way, and the trail ultimately led to the iconic giant rock structure called “Eagle Rock”. If you’re up for it, you can travel a bit further west from there… and check out the Rock Pools in Malibu Creek! That’s certainly a hidden gem in the Topanga Mountains as well! LA is full of these little escapes… so keep your eyes peeled!
