MADRID Fashion Week byJudith Moreno

Spanish Fashion Photographer, Judith Moreno www.judith-moreno.com

When the runway, the lights, the music, the tension is activated and the magic is born, your breath is held to capture an image. There is much work and effort behind each image; the work of makeup artists, hairdressers, stylists, designers, agencies, models, designers, families... people who make it possible to make heels, a blouse, a skirt, a braid or eyes come to life. I make the work of all these people come alive. The aim? To transmit; as a fashion photographer to transmit and give life to the work of so many people, for thousands of people to appreciate the simplicity of the image without being able to appreciate how hard and difficult it was to click. Roberto Verino: Always elegant. Nature rises at night to merge with the moon, a complex simplicity. Maya Hansen: A daring cake, seduction with dark chocolate, strawberry and cream, the wolves dress in sheep’s clothing. Beatriz Peñalver: A banquet of shapes and colours, making it possible to give shape to the rainbow. Francis Montesino: Magic, a tale for your eyes, the fables walk well dressed. Eva Soto Conde: Sunrise, the sun was laid upon a field of flowers. To imagine is to appreciate what exists behind a click.

Author: Emelie Svensson Swedish fashion designer & blogger for MLI by SVENSSON www.mlibysvensson.tumblr.com

“When the French hair ‘bob’ became a chic ‘bobo’ in America” As any teenager girl starting to shape a dream to work within fashion - I also wanted to see Paris. And I fell in love at first glance, of course. The French dream never moved it’s Eiffel Tower out of my chest or it’s vivid life from the Cafés in early morning rush. Paris is deeply founded on artistic dreams in every corner. In any scent of Montmartre we’ve all found ‘La Bohème’ - The Parisian woman living an unconventional life in the heart of romance. In the early nineteenth century Parisian women started exploring a movement of lifestyle involving music, art and literature when the term ‘Bohemianism’ started to emerge in France. ‘Bohemianism’ described wanderers, adventurers or vagabonds - usually the lives of marginalised and impoverished artists, writers, journalists, actors & musicians - just like the roles in Puccini’s opera ‘La Bohème’. A typical Parisian woman is characterized by ‘Le Fabuleux Destin d’Amélie Poulain’(The Fabulous Destiny of Amélie Poulain) - where the leading role Amélie Poulain wears a short bob haircut very significative to the hair trend once started in Paris c.1909 & considered to be a Bohemian attribute but also a gender confusion as well as wearing pants in a mannish way as an expression of sexuality. Marlene Dietrich is a good example in the 1930 film ‘Morocco’. There was also a circle of wealthy & privileged, even aristocratic way of living referred to as the ‘haute bohème’ (‘’high bohemians’’) - where as it could be renamed in todays fashion dictionary as ‘boho-chic’, ‘bobo-chic’, ‘ashcan chic’, ‘luxe bohemian’ or ‘luxe grunge’ - a chicer approach to style in a shabby way popularised by celebrities such as Kate Moss in England & the Olsen twins in America. Seattle’s groundbreaking rock scene in the 1990’s set fire to the style of grunge with flannel, plaid and layers. In 2006 the world was watching those elements walking alongside on the catwalk with today’s sophisticated clothing containing capes, shawls & jackets in style descriptions as ‘cocktail grunge’ & ‘modern goth’. The ‘luxe grunge’ had entered the fashion scene. Here & there throughout my research I find the commonly used word ‘Bohémien’ for Romani people’s way of living at that time associated with ‘Bohemianism’, where ‘Bohemia’ is a historical region consisting parts from the Czech Republic with its capital in Prague and the place from where they had reached Western Europe.

Many elements of ‘bobo-chic’ that took on hippie influences later on in the 70’s can be traced back much further for example with ‘pre-Raphaelite’ women of the mid-to-late 19th century. The growing unrestricted flowing style in refuse to wear corsets & crinolines created a high impact in its unconventional way of living by dressing. A misbehaving & at that time shocking way of using flowers as an accessory in public Effie Millais, whose marriage to John Ruskin was cancelled in 1854 prior to become the wife of painter John Millais, marked a ‘flower power’ starting point in history by doing so. Flowers used as an statement of liberation is visionary used in ‘Love’s Shadow’ painted by Frederick Sandy (1867) showing a girl sucking a sprig of blossom. ‘A rose in the mouth’ attribute seems to have blossomed the past year within the fashion photography. I can recall several covers & artists using flower headbands to accessorise - among them Lana Del Ray interpreting the flamboyant floral crown the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo wore in most portraits. Frida Kahlo’s incredible sense of identity seemed to have captured ‘pre-Raphaelite’ fashion with a nomadic ‘gypsy’ style from Tehuantepec, a southern city in Mexico from where her mother was from. The recent My Little Pony Hair trend could be a post modern hippie subculture, where as pale rainbow coloured hair styles would be analysed as something unconventional in normal hairstyles within society standards. Http://mylittleponyhair.tumblr.com was created by a bored 18 year old Australian girl in 2011 awaiting to enter her studies to become a make up artist. Three years & over 10,000 followers later, her tumblr is recognised to be a leading trendsetter within My Little Pony Hair trend. However wearing pink hair seems to also been through history on repeat. Marilyn Monroe did it back in the 50’s & Shirley MacLaine pioneered the movement wearing head-to-toe rose for the Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Actress in the film What A Way To Go! in 1964.

“Last month London hosted yet another successful Fashioned for Freedom show, bringing a prevalent but often overlooked issue in the industry - human trafficking. The event, organised by Christopher Gaul and hosted by actor David Gyasi and fashion writer Angela Buttolph, sought to make a change and raise awareness by showcasing ethical fashion and promoting fair trade. The catwalk show presented the stunning collections of designers such as Zoe Boomer, People Tree, Beulah London, House of Beth, amongst many others. There were also insightful talks by Safia Minney, founder of People Tree, and the director of IOM Accra (International Organisation for Migration) in support of this cause. These were followed by powerful performance by contemporary dance company, The Natashas’ Project. This year, proceeds went towards rescuing children in Ghana. It was a fantastic event for a very important cause of which I am very grateful to have been a part of as a model. Thank you to all involved. I hope the message continues to spread and keeps gaining moment.” - Carmen Obied (Professional model/features editor @Fashion Shift Magazine)
