J. Crew creative director, Jenna Lyons, reveals why she’s hooked on classics and who picks out her shoes.

what you’re drinking based on the season? I do, but I didn’t think about it that much until I was working on this fall issue of Fashion Washington. Summertime, which found me in floaty DVF dresses and platform sandals, calls for gin and tonics (or sometimes just a gingery lemonade) at one of D.C.’s many rooftop bars.

But there’s something about the approach of autumn that makes me long for a nice glass of red wine, maybe poured at one of the dozens of bucolic vineyards nearby in Virginia.

It’s a sea change — or maybe a sip change — that seems to have inspired designers this fall, too.

distilled the colors of the vineyard and the harvest — Merlot, grape, ochre, forest green — into grown-up, ladylike dresses, full skirts and skinny, tall-boot-ready trousers. Not surprisingly, we chose to show off this trend in our cover story, shot at the scenic Barboursville Vineyards near Charlottesville, where historic ruins and rolling foothills meet modern viticulture.

Guys may also be pondering adding new hues this season, perhaps in the form of a cool-again pocket square. We show and tell how to make this retro favorite fresh again (hint: step away from the starch) on page 6.

Both male and female dedicated followers of fashion won’t want to miss my chat with J. Crew’s creative director, Jenna Lyons, on page 11, which delves into the chain’s cool collaborations with Timex, Barbour,

et al., and reveals why we’ll all be wearing shocking pink pants and armfuls of bright bracelets come October.

Indeed, it’s thinking about new colors and new design ideas that got us excited to put together this issue of FW. I’m looking forward to tucking into my copy — maybe while I lounge on the new loveseat I just bought (for insights into why the petite seats are back, see our story on page 8). I chose a khaki and white striped fabric, but now I’m wondering if I missed the boat by not ordering cabernet velvet instead. At least it’d hide any seasonal vino spills — and match my new autumn wardrobe.

The best of them, by names from Margaret Atwood to Nora Ephron, now star in a tabletop book, “Nostalgia in Vogue” ($55, Rizzoli). Since taking over 66-year-old Paris womenswear brand Celine in 2008, designer Phoebe Philo has managed the label with the same less-is-more approach on display during her tenure at Chloe. HU’S WEAR (2906 M St. NW; 202-342-2020) picked up the line for fall (Hu’s Shoes across the street carries Celine footwear), bringing in easy-to-wear pieces such as a tobacco-hued leather skirt ($2,390) and hunt-countryish blazers ($2,850-$3,000). “I like how structured yet feminine her clothes are,” says store owner Marlene Hu Aldaba. Why is DIY so hot again now?

I think it’s crept back into so many different niches, from food to the home. The downturn in the economy made people want to spend less money and to make things their own. People just want their homes to speak to them more these days.

Mod Mix

In the 1600s, English fur traders discovered the Native American settlement of Tohoga. A century later, that trading post became Georgetown, cementing the ’hood’s British colonial charm.

The U.K. invades the zone again with ALLSAINTS SPITALFIELDS, (3235 M St. NW; 202-595-9828), the East London-inspired High Street brand known for its edgy aesthetic (aka more Kate Moss than Middleton). In a two-story warehouse-y space, vintage sewing machines and industrial cog hooks set off steampunkmeets-rocker clothes for blokes and chicks, including oversized sweaters and slim leather pants (shown, $195 and $650).

With its mural of antique tin ceiling tiles, cement floors and low, louche sofas, the new WEST ELM POP-UP SHOP in Georgetown (3333 M St. NW; 202-333-2928) looks like some worldly hipster’s loft. But everything in the 3,300-square-foot temporary store — a first for the affordable home brand — is for sale, from throws stitched from vintage saris ($99) to blue-and-white print plates (shown, $8 each).

“Customers like a layered look — travel souvenirs, pieces they’ve inherited, things that are a little modern,” says West Elm spokeswoman Abigail Jacobs. The spot is near GU, so expect studentfriendly items: striped bath mats, dorm-tiny gray desks.

Pretty, Easy

Call it Sephora Syndrome: The panicky feeling you get when confronted with too many cosmetic choices. The antidote might be Georgetown’s new NECTAR SKIN BAR (1633 Wisconsin Ave. NW; 202-333-4332), a rowhouse selling an edited range of hard-to-find brands in a serenely glam setting of chandeliers and creamy walls.

Products range from Oribe edelweiss-lycee conditioner (shown, $39) to GlamGlow mud mask ($69). In-house services include the Pearl Pedicure ($75) and the LashDip ($250), which gives your peepers an inky fringe for six weeks. A sleek back deck with cushy lounge chairs means you can have treatments outside.

And there’s a new magazine, The Lucky Peach, which is the most creative I’ve seen in years.

Pocket squares bring panache and retro style to jackets or suits Once the mark of a European gentleman

How do experts fold squares? “It depends on the material,� says Sherman Pickey’s Ethan Drath (who styled these handkerchiefs). “If I’m wearing linen, I like the straight-edge, geometric look. If I’m wearing silk, I stuff it all in. It should never look too precise and always have some rumpled element.�

“My grandfather used to say a gentleman carries two: one for the lady; one for the schnoz,� says Jason Tesauro, co-author of “The Modern Gentlema n: A Gu ide to Essential Manners, Savvy and Vice� ($16, Ten Speed Press). “The one for the lady lives in the pocket, and the one for the nose wasn’t to be seen.�

Now, most men usually just show off visually pleasing squares, folding them in various shapes before sticking them into a jacket pocket.

A fresh interest in midcentury dressing (skinny ties, fedoras) helped make the squares hip again: “It started with the revival of the ’60s ‘Mad Men’ look,� says Eric

Jennings, fashion director of Saks Fifth Avenue Menswear. “But more men are also dressing business casual. Without a tie, a square gives a professional look.�

Bold and colorful silk varieties like Hermes’ silk twill (shown, above) are popular this fall. Psychedelic prints and wild folds work for some guys. But Ethan Drath, coowner of Sherman Pickey, (1647 Wisconsin Ave. NW; 202-333-4212) tells those unaccustomed to sartorial flourishes to start out with a simple, white, straight-edge linen square. “It’s polished without being too adventurous or flowery,� he says.

dozed was not the time-management coup that this new mom thought it would be. Instead, before I knew it, I was sleeping in clothes to wear the next day, sporting a uniform of drawstring pants and wrinkled James Perse tees and being mistaken for a gas attendant (Really!). To say I let myself go after having two kids would be letting myself off easy. But getting fashionably dressed seemed like a tall order with a hungry newborn and a whiny toddler.

I vowed to embrace what the pros optimistically termed my “transition body.” The first step: temporarily storing anything that doesn’t fit.

“I’m not a fan of an enormous wardrobe. I like it to be lean,” says Roberti.

Alas, there’s no one-sizefits-all solution for filling my transition closet. Leggings and tunics were popular ideas. Nancy Pearlstein of Relish liked Sofie D’hoore dresses and Jil Sander blouses with snaps. All agreed I should bag the baggy clothes and accentuate my positives.

Cleavage and calves are my best bets. V-necks and scoop tees were easy to come by, thanks to Alexander Wang and Vince. But my search for pencil skirts and cropped pants was a bust: None of my favorite styles came in large enough sizes. Still, a subsequent shopping trip yielded a few options that fit my fashion criteria — and backside. The breathing room those pieces afford me is priceless.

My edited, functional wardrobe has proved a big time saver.

I can shower in the morning on occasion, and often have time to throw on tinted moisturizer and my oversize Anna Beck earrings. Then, a spritz of Bond No. 9 Eau de Noho. These little things make me feel like more than a mere mom. The rest — chipped toenails, overgrown hair — can wait.

“You cannot aim for perfection after you’ve had a baby. Have patience and acceptance,” says Neave. “You’ll get back to your old self — or something that resembles your old self.”

“When I don’t feel good about myself, I’m not as energetic with my kids.

A Seat That’s Petite

Loveseats first came into vogue in late 17thcentury Europe, but they were femme, leggy things designed to accommodate women’s wide skirts, not courting couples. These days, the couch’s little sister — also known as a settee or even a sofaette — has morphed into a sleek, stylish alternative to the lumpy, frumpy chair and half, showing up in mod shapes and contempo fabrics.

“They’re perfect in a bedroom or a landing,” says furniture designer Mitchell Gold, who sells several models at his Logan Circle store (1526 14th St. NW; 202-332-3433).

“I have one at the foot of my bed that I use as a sort of luggage rack.”

He’s also partial to pulling one up to the dining table for an effect that’s luxurious and utterly comfortable.

D.C. interior designer Sally Steponkus likes to put them in living rooms “if they’re kind of delicate and girly,” she says.

But again, “I also just did one with a tufted back in blue linen for a guy’s library, so you never can tell. They’re so versatile.”

As the neighborhood changed (hello, hundreds of condos!), the Kahoes found themselves wondering if they should be trafficking in more than vintage oil paintings, weathered French chairs and industrial desks. “We were getting these hip, Anthropologie-type customers who’d come look at our displays for inspiration, so we wondered what more we could give them,” says Anna. If all-American fashion has an everygirl, it’s Jenna Lyons. The insouciantly stylish creative director/president of J. Crew, Lyons has used her own high-low look (sequins on sweatshirts, pullovers with ballskirts) to vault the 28-year-old brand from a mall standard into a classy-yet-quirky temple of affordable cool. Along the way, she and her team have collaborated with names like Quoddy (mocs) and Billy Reid (retro menswear) and drawn celeb clients (Michelle Obama, Reese Witherspoon). We caught her as JC launched a U.K. website and presented for the first time at New York Fashion Week

What inspires you and your design team?

A vintage print is often the driving force in women’s wear; for men, inspiration often comes from a painting or an artist.

How do you feel about your own fashion icon status?

It’s hard to hear yourself described that way! I just think I’m a little tomboy and a little bit Grandma’s attic.

So why is the time right for a British invasion?

It’s partially because we realized we had so many European customers. They were coming in and buying tons of shoes! And after Michelle Obama wore J. Crew in the U.K., we wanted to go ahead with it.

Yeah, what do you think of the way she wears JC? She’s really inspirational, the way she puts J. Crew with Lanvin tennis shoes. She’s the first First Lady where we know where she buys her clothes. Most of them go to Valentino and have everything made. She’s showing women they don’t have to pay a million dollars to look good.

Why did J .Crew get into collaborations with brands like Timex and Ray-Ban? Well, it started more in men’s.

We noticed that all the guys in the office were wearing Red Wing boots. So we thought, “If they’re doing that, shouldn’t we be carrying them?” So us collaborating with these brands, curating them in a way, means we’re talking about things we believe in. It’s also saying, we don’t have to reinvent the watch — Timex has been doing them for years.

So how do you put that sort of look together every day?

Well, ideally, there’s something boy — I actually wear our J. Crew men’s trousers — and something sparkly or dressy. But my process always starts with the shoes, because I have a 4-year-old son who picks them out for me every day. I work from the ground up after he does that!

What’s fall looking like?

It’s very colorful for women. One of my favorite pieces is the Cafe Capri ($118-$138, above), which we did in this beautiful, intense fuchsia and a deep, rich blue.

Over the last few years, I think people have really gotten into the dressed-up casual approach that J. Crew does so well. What’s the secret to wearing sequined sweatpants or a feathered mini skirt without looking ridiculous?

It’s about opposites. If you’re wearing a sequined skirt, what’s the opposite — maybe a denim jacket? And if you’re in a pair of jeans and a crisp T-shirt, wear nice jewelry and spiky heels.

he clothes this summer were cocktail-lounge bright and light, all stawberry daquiri reds and mojito greens in breezy silks and linens.

But for fall, designers have tapped the wine-dark hues of the harvest: rich-as-Merlot maroons, grapey purples, farm-apple reds. Names from Jill Stuart to Chloe dabbled in shades that seemed stolen from the vineyard — perhaps even Barboursville, the storied Virginia winery near Charlottesville where we shot this cover story.

“Burgundies and ochres signal an elegance and refinement to me,” says Julia Farr, owner of the eponymous Chevy Chase boutique (5232 44th St. NW; 202-364-3277), which picked up pieces like Tibi’s Chianti-toned wool panel dress and Alice + Olivia’s tweedy redon-plum skirt. “These kinds of colors work so well in Washington, because they reflect what’s going on around us in fall — the changing leaves, those nights by the fire with a glass of wine.” Jennifer Barger
