watch
No other watch is engineered quite like a Rolex. The GMT-Master, introduced in 1955, was developed in collaboration with Pan Am to meet the needs of their international pilots. The GMT-Master II has proved to be even more invaluable as it features a rotatable 24-hour graduated bezel that allows those who travel the world to read three different time zones. Two simultaneously. The 40 mm GMT-Master II is ďŹ tted with a virtually scratch-resistant black Cerachrom disc and is presented here in 904L steel.

J. Crew creative director, Jenna Lyons, reveals why she’s hooked on classics and who picks out her shoes.
what you’re drinking based on the season? I do, but I didn’t think about it that much until I was working on this fall issue of Fashion Washington. Summertime, which found me in floaty DVF dresses and platform sandals, calls for gin and tonics (or sometimes just a gingery lemonade) at one of D.C.’s many rooftop bars. But there’s something about the approach of autumn that makes me long for a nice glass of red wine, maybe poured at one of the dozens of bucolic vineyards nearby in Virginia. It’s a sea change — or maybe a sip change — that seems to have inspired designers this fall, too. Names from Lela Rose to Maison Martin Margiela
8
distilled the colors of the vineyard and the harvest — Merlot, grape, ochre, forest green — into grown-up, ladylike dresses, full skirts and skinny, tall-boot-ready trousers. Not surprisingly, we chose to show off this trend in our cover story, shot at the scenic Barboursville Vineyards near Charlottesville, where historic ruins and rolling foothills meet modern viticulture. Guys may also be pondering adding new hues this season, perhaps in the form of a cool-again pocket square. We show and tell how to make this retro favorite fresh again (hint: step away from the starch) on page 6. Both male and female dedicated followers of fashion won’t want to miss my chat with J. Crew’s creative director, Jenna Lyons, on page 11, which delves into the chain’s cool collaborations with Timex, Barbour,
et al., and reveals why we’ll all be wearing shocking pink pants and armfuls of bright bracelets come October. Indeed, it’s thinking about new colors and new design ideas that got us excited to put together this issue of FW. I’m looking forward to tucking into my copy — maybe while I lounge on the new loveseat I just bought (for insights into why the petite seats are back, see our story on page 8). I chose a khaki and white striped fabric, but now I’m wondering if I missed the boat by not ordering cabernet velvet instead. At least it’d hide any seasonal vino spills — and match my new autumn wardrobe.
What’s bigger than a chair, smaller than a sofa and can fit into any space? A luxe loveseat.

Karl Lagerfeld recalling an Irving Penn photo of a Balenciaga dress that piqued his creativity as a boy. Manolo Blahnik confessing to loving Sophia Loren before he fell for shoes. Essays imbued with history and glamour have powered Vogue’s “Nostalgia” column since 2000. The best of them, by names from Margaret Atwood to Nora Ephron, now star in a tabletop book, “Nostalgia in Vogue” ($55, Rizzoli). Words are accented by photos from the likes of Henri BOOK SHELF Cartier-Bresson and Helmut Newton, meaning the volume comes across as both pretty and smart — not surprising considering it draws from the 119-year-old style bible known for the same duality.
THE SEASON’S HOT ITEMS AND HIP HAPPENINGS
The Way We Wrote
1 2 3 4 5
Old West elements (feathers, leathers, Indian beads) get lassoed to East Coast cool in Lizzie Fortunato Jewels’ necklaces. “They’ve got a natural, earthy feel that’s more pioneer woman than hippie child,” says Kathryn Fortunato, Lizzie’s twin sister and the brand’s spokeswoman. The combo of seemingly disparate elements — hunter green cording, rough leather, brassy serpentine chains — makes for collars both statement-making and surprising. Items from the fall collection, like the dramatic ameythst and feather “Old Laughing Lady” necklace (shown, $742), now at MULEH (1831 14th St. NW; 202-6673440), will also shine there at a trunk show Oct. 8, 3-7 p.m.

Grace Bonney Slideshows of hip apartments and DIY projects help Grace Bonney’s blog, Design*Sponge (Designsponge.com) attract 90,000 hits daily. Phoebe Philo Facts
Since taking over 66-year-old Paris womenswear brand Celine in 2008, designer Phoebe Philo has managed the label with the same less-is-more approach on display during her tenure at Chloe. HU’S WEAR (2906 M St. NW; 202-342-2020) picked up the line for fall (Hu’s Shoes across the street carries Celine footwear), bringing in easy-to-wear pieces such as a tobacco-hued leather skirt ($2,390) and hunt-countryish blazers ($2,850-$3,000). “I like how structured yet feminine her clothes are,” says store owner Marlene Hu Aldaba. Also on the shelves (and available for special order): Celine’s cultier-than-aBirkin bags (shown).
British Migration
Why is DIY so hot again now? I think it’s crept back into so many different niches, from food to the home. The downturn in the economy made people want to spend less money and to make things their own. People just want their homes to speak to them more these days.
Mod Mix
In the 1600s, English fur traders discovered the Native American settlement of Tohoga. A century later, that trading post became Georgetown, cementing the ’hood’s British colonial charm. The U.K. invades the zone again with ALLSAINTS SPITALFIELDS, (3235 M St. NW; 202-595-9828), the East London-inspired High Street brand known for its edgy aesthetic (aka more Kate Moss than Middleton). In a two-story warehouse-y space, vintage sewing machines and industrial cog hooks set off steampunkmeets-rocker clothes for blokes and chicks, including oversized sweaters and slim leather pants (shown, $195 and $650).
With its mural of antique tin ceiling tiles, cement floors and low, louche sofas, the new WEST ELM POP-UP SHOP in Georgetown (3333 M St. NW; 202-333-2928) looks like some worldly hipster’s loft. But everything in the 3,300-square-foot temporary store — a first for the affordable home brand — is for sale, from throws stitched from vintage saris ($99) to blue-and-white print plates (shown, $8 each). “Customers like a layered look — travel souvenirs, pieces they’ve inherited, things that are a little modern,” says West Elm spokeswoman Abigail Jacobs. The spot is near GU, so expect studentfriendly items: striped bath mats, dorm-tiny gray desks.
Pretty, Easy
Call it Sephora Syndrome: The panicky feeling you get when confronted with too many cosmetic choices. The antidote might be Georgetown’s new NECTAR SKIN BAR (1633 Wisconsin Ave. NW; 202-333-4332), a rowhouse selling an edited range of hard-to-find brands in a serenely glam setting of chandeliers and creamy walls. Products range from Oribe edelweiss-lycee conditioner (shown, $39) to GlamGlow mud mask ($69). In-house services include the Pearl Pedicure ($75) and the LashDip ($250), which gives your peepers an inky fringe for six weeks. A sleek back deck with cushy lounge chairs means you can have treatments outside.

The headboard I upholstered myself (shown), which validates that staplegun upholstery can be really beautiful! It was challenging, but worth it.
The book shows off great homes. Which elements do you love? One guy hung skis as shelves, which was wackily beautiful. And HGTV’s Genevieve Gorder decorated her wall with a piece of bitterroot.
I try to find inspiration outside of my own niche. I like the graphic design blog The Fox is Black (Thefoxisblack.com). And there’s a new magazine, The Lucky Peach, which is the most creative I’ve seen in years.

Back in The Fold
Pocket squares bring panache and retro style to jackets or suits Once the mark of a European gentleman
How do experts fold squares? “It depends on the material, says Sherman Pickey’s Ethan Drath (who styled these handkerchiefs). “If I’m wearing linen, I like the straight-edge, geometric look. If I’m wearing silk, I stuff it all in. It should never look too precise and always have some rumpled element. From top Left: Hermes silk twill ($165, Neiman Marcus, Mazza Gallerie); Hermes silk twill ($165, Neiman Marcus); Hugh & Crye checkered linen (3 for $40, Hugh & Crye, 3212 O St. NW; 202-250-3807); Peter Blair microprint square ($45, Sherman Pickey); Sid Mashburn fringed Oxford cloth square in blue ($55, Sidmashburn.com); Imperial cotton square in lime ($35, Neiman Marcus); Sid Mashburn square in Irish linen ($25, Sidmashburn.com); Drake’s London polka dot style ($60, Neiman Marcus).
“My grandfather used to say a gentleman carries two: one for the lady; one for the schnoz, says Jason Tesauro, co-author of “The Modern Gentlema n: A Gu ide to Essential Manners, Savvy and Vice ($16, Ten Speed Press). “The one for the lady lives in the pocket, and the one for the nose wasn’t to be seen. Now, most men usually just show off visually pleasing squares, folding them in various shapes before sticking them into a jacket pocket. A fresh interest in midcentury dressing (skinny ties, fedoras) helped make the squares hip again: “It started with the revival of the ’60s ‘Mad Men’ look, says Eric
Jennings, fashion director of Saks Fifth Avenue Menswear. “But more men are also dressing business casual. Without a tie, a square gives a professional look. Bold and colorful silk varieties like Hermes’ silk twill (shown, above) are popular this fall. Psychedelic prints and wild folds work for some guys. But Ethan Drath, coowner of Sherman Pickey, (1647 Wisconsin Ave. NW; 202-333-4212) tells those unaccustomed to sartorial flourishes to start out with a simple, white, straight-edge linen square. “It’s polished without being too adventurous or flowery, he says. K ATHERINE BOYLE
(or an American dandy emulating one), a pocket handkerchief was as de rigueur as a watch or hat. The 16-by-16-inch squares signified care and brought extra flair to standard suits. U.S. guys haven’t paid much attention to the proper accessory since the JFK era. But recently, plaid or cheeky print varieties have been popping out of pockets from the Hill to Georgetown.

Mad About Decorating
Bryan Batt might be best known as an actor. (He starred on “Mad Men and makes frequent appearances on Broadway.) But the ebullient Southerner also runs Hazlenut, a popular interiors and antiques shop in his native New Orleans. His new book, “Big, Easy Style ($35, Clarkson-Potter), out Oct. 4, shows off the quirky vibe of the storied Louisiana city.
Southern Spaces
Batt, a big booster of hot hues and antiques mixed with modern pieces, chronicles spaces like an airy Garden District cottage decked in blues, yellows and leopard prints and his own NoLa carriage house with its kiwi green walls and mid-century accents
Why We Love It
Batt goes beyond mere house porn, giving great advice — collect items over time, don’t fear color — and illustrating it with lush photos. Bryan Batt not only acts, he also does windows.

Not a Hot Mama? Regain your style groove post-baby with patience and stretch waistbands
dozed was not the time-management coup that this new mom thought it would be. Instead, before I knew it, I was sleeping in clothes to wear the next day, sporting a uniform of drawstring pants and wrinkled James Perse tees and being mistaken for a gas attendant (Really!). To say I let myself go after having two kids would be letting myself off easy. But getting fashionably dressed seemed like a tall order with a hungry newborn and a whiny toddler. “That doesn’t mean I have to walk around in my Louboutin heels, but it does mean I need to take a bit of time to work on my style.” Every mom-cum-fashionplate I spoke with echoed that idea. If looking cool could make me a better parent, maybe I should ditch the glorified sweats. But,
like, ‘Honey, it isn’t happening. Shop for where you are now.’” I vowed to embrace what the pros optimistically termed my “transition body.” The first step: temporarily storing anything that doesn’t fit. “I’m not a fan of an enormous wardrobe. I like it to be lean,” says Roberti. Alas, there’s no one-sizefits-all solution for filling my transition closet. Leggings and tunics were popular ideas. Nancy Pearlstein of Relish liked Sofie D’hoore dresses and Jil Sander blouses with snaps. All agreed I should bag the baggy clothes and accentuate my positives. Cleavage and calves are my best bets. V-necks and scoop tees were easy to come by, thanks to Alexander Wang and Vince. But my search for pencil skirts and cropped pants was a bust: None of my favorite styles came in large enough sizes. Still, a subsequent shopping trip yielded a few options that fit my fashion criteria — and backside. The breathing room those pieces afford me is priceless. My edited, functional wardrobe has proved a big time saver. I can shower in the morning on occasion, and often have time to throw on tinted moisturizer and my oversize Anna Beck earrings. Then, a spritz of Bond No. 9 Eau de Noho. These little things make me feel like more than a mere mom. The rest — chipped toenails, overgrown hair — can wait. “You cannot aim for perfection after you’ve had a baby. Have patience and acceptance,” says Neave. “You’ll get back to your old self — or something that resembles your old self.” Promises, promises.
“When I don’t feel good about myself, I’m not as energetic with my kids. Honestly, I’m not as good a mom.” frazzled — and my shirt is splattered with oatmeal. Who knew that could matter to anyone besides the fashion police? “When I don’t feel good about myself, I’m not as energetic with my kids. after trying on heaps of old faves that wouldn’t fit my post-birth girth, singing Itsy Bitsy Spider seemed far more appealing than addressing my size 12 bod. WHAT I'M WEARING
A Seat That’s Petite
Loveseats first came into vogue in late 17thcentury Europe, but they were femme, leggy things designed to accommodate women’s wide skirts, not courting couples. These days, the couch’s little sister — also known as a settee or even a sofaette — has morphed into a sleek, stylish alternative to the lumpy, frumpy chair and half, showing up in mod shapes and contempo fabrics.
“They’re perfect in a bedroom or a landing,” says furniture designer Mitchell Gold, who sells several models at his Logan Circle store (1526 14th St. NW; 202-332-3433). “I have one at the foot of my bed that I use as a sort of luggage rack.” He’s also partial to pulling one up to the dining table for an effect that’s luxurious and utterly comfortable.
D.C. interior designer Sally Steponkus likes to put them in living rooms “if they’re kind of delicate and girly,” she says. But again, “I also just did one with a tufted back in blue linen for a guy’s library, so you never can tell. They’re so versatile.” Here’s where to get the twoseaters; whether you use yours to cuddle up with your significant other or curl up with an iPad is your call. JENNIFER BARGER
Ballard Designs BALLARDDESIGNS.COM
The Euro-centric, Atlanta-based webtailer boasts one of the largest stocks of loveseats and setees we’ve seen, with styles from tufted leather ($1,600) to frankly French (shown, $1,159). The sleek lofts popping up in D.C. call for similarly bold furniture, like the sofaettes sold at the upholstery kings’ spacious Logan Circle showroom. Styles like the high-backed Odette (shown, $1,550-$2,540) and the cushy Mona ($1,270-$3,430) work in spaces from studio to palatial. BEST FOR: Lovers of the brand’s “warm modern” who like up-to-date fabrics, such as zigzag prints or teal velvet

The Sutton sofaette (shown, $599$699) and the Hollywood Regency-ish tufted Elton Settee ($699-$839) can be ordered in velvets, microfibers and punchy prints, including some by Allegra Hicks. BEST FOR: Fans of haute, organic style seeking downright sexy furniture
Eco-friendly fabrics and contempo-meets-country silhouettes make Cisco Brothers mini sofas a big hit at this Old Town shop, known for its deft blend of antique and mod styles. The Lucia (shown, $2,295-$4,487) subtly evokes classic wing chairs; the curvy Windsor can be ordered upholstered ($2,120-$4,159) or slipcovered ($2,496-$4,880). BEST FOR: Creatures of comfort who crave plush seating that mixes well with older pieces
GEM HUNTER
Thomollari stalks the baubles she loves, like this bejeweled bracelet by Ishi Japan. “I met the artist, and he wasn’t selling his jewelry anymore,” she says. “I promised to take care of his works. Now I have a number of his pieces from the 1980s.”
Old Furniture, New Clothes When GoodWood opened in 1994, U Street was emerging as a retail zone. The antiques/oddities shop won fans as “a place to get a farm table or an Empire dresser,” says co-owner Anna Kahoe, who bought the spot with husband Dan nine years ago. It’s still got a fab stash of furniture, but the duo just added clothes and cosmetics to the mix. JENNIFER BARGER
BACKSTORY
Lucky Tiger, a men’s shaving line started in 1935, is now among the brands at GoodWood.

As the neighborhood changed (hello, hundreds of condos!), the Kahoes found themselves wondering if they should be trafficking in more than vintage oil paintings, weathered French chairs and industrial desks. “We were getting these hip, Anthropologie-type customers who’d come look at our displays for inspiration, so we wondered what more we could give them,” says Anna. So, the perennial clotheshorse and her husband gave the shop a longer name (GoodWood: An American Mercantile & Dry Goods Store), and started carrying new women’s fashions by such names as EmersonMade and Globe Hope, plus vintage menswear and hard-to-find, heritage-y cosmetics.

J. Crew’s Control
The brand’s ‘chic in chief’ gives classics a cheeky twist
If all-American fashion has an everygirl, it’s Jenna Lyons. The insouciantly stylish creative director/president of J. Crew, Lyons has used her own high-low look (sequins on sweatshirts, pullovers with ballskirts) to vault the 28-year-old brand from a mall standard into a classy-yet-quirky temple of affordable cool. Along the way, she and her team have collaborated with names like Quoddy (mocs) and Billy Reid (retro menswear) and drawn celeb clients (Michelle Obama, Reese Witherspoon). We caught her as JC launched a U.K. website and presented for the first time at New York Fashion Week
What inspires you and your design team? A vintage print is often the driving force in women’s wear; for men, inspiration often comes from a painting or an artist. How do you feel about your own fashion icon status? It’s hard to hear yourself described that way! I just think I’m a little tomboy and a little bit Grandma’s attic.
. Jennifer Barger
So why is the time right for a British invasion? It’s partially because we realized we had so many European customers. They were coming in and buying tons of shoes! And after Michelle Obama wore J. Crew in the U.K., we wanted to go ahead with it.
A diving-style Timex watch ($175, J. Crew stores or Jcrew.com), one of many collaborations J. Crew has done with heritage brands. It’s one of company president and creative director Jenna Lyons’ favorite picks for fall.
exhibit a-plus
Yeah, what do you think of the way she wears JC? She’s really inspirational, the way she puts J. Crew with Lanvin tennis shoes. She’s the first First Lady where we know where she buys her clothes. Most of them go to Valentino and have everything made. She’s showing women they don’t have to pay a million dollars to look good.
Why did J .Crew get into collaborations with brands like Timex and Ray-Ban? Well, it started more in men’s. We noticed that all the guys in the office were wearing Red Wing boots. So we thought, “If they’re doing that, shouldn’t we be carrying them?” So us collaborating with these brands, curating them in a way, means we’re talking about things we believe in. It’s also saying, we don’t have to reinvent the watch — Timex has been doing them for years.
So how do you put that sort of look together every day? Well, ideally, there’s something boy — I actually wear our J. Crew men’s trousers — and something sparkly or dressy. But my process always starts with the shoes, because I have a 4-year-old son who picks them out for me every day. I work from the ground up after he does that!
What’s fall looking like? It’s very colorful for women. One of my favorite pieces is the Cafe Capri ($118-$138, above), which we did in this beautiful, intense fuchsia and a deep, rich blue. They’re already selling out! Over the last few years, I think people have really gotten into the dressed-up casual approach that J. Crew does so well. What’s the secret to wearing sequined sweatpants or a feathered mini skirt without looking ridiculous? It’s about opposites. If you’re wearing a sequined skirt, what’s the opposite — maybe a denim jacket? And if you’re in a pair of jeans and a crisp T-shirt, wear nice jewelry and spiky heels.
J. Crew teamed with retro jewelry design house Lulu Frost to create Art Deco-style bangles ($45-$118).
not-so-wild things This season’s animal-print trend gets subtly interpreted in a 1960s-feeling leopardprint sheath and ladylike red snakeskin pumps ($170 and $350, J. Crew stores and Jcrew.com).
Wedding Finery Flashback It’s hard to imagine enjoying your wedding laced into the bustled, corseted gown Ella Merriweather wore to say “I do” to cereal innovator Charles “C.W.” Post in 1874, but by most accounts, the union worked out. Ella’s gown is among several big-day dresses — bridal styles, maid costumes Dina Merrill, Marjorie Merriweather Post’s youngest — shown through Jan. 1 daughter, wore a satin gown in Hillwood Estate and (right) and fur-trimmed cape Museum’s (4155 Linnean (left) for her 1946 wedding. Ave. NW; 202-686-5807) “Wedding Belles: Bridal Fashions from the Marjorie Merriweather Post Family, 1874-1958.” The museum, the former home of Ella’s daughter,
D.C. socialite/art collector Marjorie Merriweather Post, uses fashions, photos and artifacts from the wealthy family’s 19th- to mid-20th-century weddings to explore changing nuptial customs and styles. Black and white images of Post and her daughter, actress Dina Merrill, bring these old clothes to life. But it’s the couture details — the lush fox-fur trim on a sweeping gown Marjorie wore for her third marriage in 1935; Merrill’s Cartier pearl and diamond purse — that really dazzle. “The Post women always followed the trends of the day,” says Howard Vincent Kurtz, exhibition curator. “These gowns still inspire modern brides.” k atherine boyle

T
he clothes this summer were cocktail-lounge bright and light, all stawberry daquiri reds and mojito greens in breezy silks and linens. But for fall, designers have tapped the wine-dark hues of the harvest: rich-as-Merlot maroons, grapey purples, farm-apple reds. Names from Jill Stuart to Chloe dabbled in shades that seemed stolen from the vineyard — perhaps even Barboursville, the storied Virginia winery near Charlottesville where we shot this cover story. “Burgundies and ochres signal an elegance and refinement to me,” says Julia Farr, owner of the eponymous Chevy Chase boutique (5232 44th St. NW; 202-364-3277), which picked up pieces like Tibi’s Chianti-toned wool panel dress and Alice + Olivia’s tweedy redon-plum skirt. “These kinds of colors work so well in Washington, because they reflect what’s going on around us in fall — the changing leaves, those nights by the fire with a glass of wine.” Jennifer Barger
ON LOCATION There are nearly 200 vineyards in the state of Virginia, fulfilling the dream of First Oenophile Thomas Jefferson to grow European grapes on American soil. One of the best places to experience the Old Dominion’s viticulture is Barboursville Vineyards, where an 1804 house designed by Jefferson (now a very scenic ruin), a European-style tasting room serving awardwinning wines like Viognier and Cabarnet Franc ,and an elegant Italian restaurant, Palladio, make for an ideal autumn afternoon. Barboursville is just a little more than two hours from Washington. 17655 Winery Road Barboursville, Va. Mon.-Sat., 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Sun. 11 a.m.-5 p.m. For information, see Barboursvillewine.net or call 540- 832-3824.

Picnics during a humid D.C. summer present an awkward challenge: What can one wear in 100-degree heat to play lawn games in Gilded Age gardens? Textile Museum guests met the challenge with gusto at “Urban Picnic,” donning summery trends like maxi dresses and lace. Live jazz and sweet drinks accompanied the steamy June evening, before guests headed indoors for exhibitions (and airconditioning). K ATHERINE BOYLE
