An invite to a swanky party — whether it’s the Opera Ball or a friend’s dinner bash — gets me excited both about a festive time and about what I’ll wear. Such party preparations, which might involve shopping for a new cocktail frock or statement necklace, inspired our holiday soiree fashion shoot (page 10). We sussed out tuxes for him, gowns for her and a slew of cool accessories, then took them on location at District hot spots, including an artisanal butcher shop and a carriage house that doubles as a supper club.

The season also means we — and our readers — will be hunting both for holiday gifts and clothing to fight the chill. on H Street NE, a New Zealandbased workout-wear shop in Bethesda and a milliner in the heart of Georgetown. In addition to all those fresh retailers, D.C. is also home to an increasingly vibrant fashion startup scene. Assistant editor Holley Simmons profiles three of these exciting companies on page 9. They range from a work-apropos customdress firm to an edgy, indie website selling little-known labels. Simmons also chatted with one of the area’s hottest entrepreneurs, Bluemercury co-founder Marla Beck (page 6). Beck, who helms the growing chain of apothecary/spas, dishes about her new skin care line and reveals what color lipstick local women crave for nights out. At home, Washington designers and nesters are favoring darker hues, which we explore with a photo-packed story on page 14. You’ll find all this, plus other stylish scoops, in this issue. It’ll also be my last time producing FW. It’s been a fun and glamorous five years, and I’ll miss telling you about D.C.’s fashion and design scene. Have a great holiday and a stylish new year!

THE SEASON’S COOL ITEMS AND GLAM HAPPENINGS

There aren’t many shops in the Atlas District yet. Why’d you decide to move there? I’ve been wanting the business to grow, and to have everything — furniture, my upholstery workshop — under one roof. And I found this amazing carriage house. It’s got all this red brick, like a real foundry! Will all that additional space enable you to carry anything new? It’ll let us have larger pieces — armoires, beds, even bedding. Any tips on incorporating antiques into modern spaces? What’s your home’s little black dress? Think about what you like most in your space, as if your home is your closet. Is it your sofa? Your rug? Then pick things that’ll go with it, whether that’s

3. Follow Her Stars

ICEBREAKER

For the past two years, upholsterer/antiques hunter Yvette Freeman has been selling a stylish mix of rehabbed vintage chairs, mid-century suitcases (a few, shown) and vintage clothing at Foundry, her U Street boutique. December 15, she’ll move the business into a 3,500-square-foot carriage house in the up-and-coming Atlas District (819 11th St. NE; 571-277-5245). We chatted with her about what to expect in the warehouse-y new spot.

1. Workout Warmup

In the winter, you cuddle up in wool coats and sweaters. But ICEBREAKER, a New Zealandbased activewear company, thinks you should jog, hike and bike in the material, too. “It’s a fiber that works for sheep in hot and cold conditions, so it makes sense it’d work for people as well,” says Icebreaker global product merchandising director Lisa Ferreira. The company’s first local branch opened in November in Bethesda (4821 Bethesda Ave.; 301-913-0379), offering sleek-yetsporty merino wool pieces for men and women. Our favorites include zip-up shirts (shown, $110), base layers (think long underwear) and “chutes,” funnel-like neck protectors ($30).

3

2. Brimming with Style

In 1890s Pittsburgh, Cassel Goorin sold handmade hats from his horse cart. Now, his chapeau-creating descendants are hawking cloches (shown, top, $50), knit caps ($48) and slick fedoras (shown, bottom, $54) at the new GOORIN BROS. HAT SHOP (1214 Wisconsin Ave. NW; 202-338-4287). A tin ceiling and factory-style shelving set off men’s and women’s styles, some made in the U.S., in an old-school storefront. Also millinery-ing around: vintagelooking hatboxes ($8-$12), flower-shaped brim pins ($30) and a few kids’ styles.

Fairfax County jewelry designer SOPHIE BLAKE has a crush on the shapes and sparkle of the ’20s: gilded trapezoids, topaz clusters, rhinestone tassels. For her winter line, though, she took flapper-ish ideas down a dark path. “The new pieces are a little edgier, a little spiky,” Blake says. “It reflects the state I was in.” Made using salvaged 1940s Czech glass etched with starbursts, pieces like the gunmetal “Sima” studs ($120) and “Rita” pendant (shown, $260) have a celestial vibe, mirroring Blake’s emotional navigation. Buy them at Tabandeh (Mazza Gallerie, 5300 Wisconsin Ave. NW; 202244-0777) or sophieblakeny.com.

4. How Fitting

Online menswear shop, KNOT STANDARD, has made a name for itself thanks to its precise 3-D measurement technology that allows guys to be fitted for custom suits from home (knotstandard.com). Still, when it comes to bespoke clothing, nothing is more accurate than an in-person measuring. Luckily for chaps, tailoring services are now available at Knot Standard’s new, appointment-only showroom in Logan Circle (1407 S St. NW; 855-784-8968). Shoppers can choose from more than 1,000 luxurious fabrics, including Italian wool and breathable linen. The resulting suits run from $500 to $5,000.

5. Deck the Tables

Rich photography, interesting recipes and clever DIYs (hand-painted linens, paper-bag candle holders) land “PICTURE PERFECT PARTIES” ($40, Rizzoli) on the top of the host-wanted list. In addition to year-round inspiration for just-because get togethers, the tome — compiled by entertaining expert Annette Joseph — shares Christmas-specific party planning tips (sparkle is always good) and recipes for clever finger foods (a deconstructed Caprese salad skewered on a pesto-filled plastic pipette). Joseph also has a knack for lowmaintenance fetes, so you can spend more time under the mistletoe.

4

Why do people crave vintage furniture? I think it’s both about wanting something with a backstory and about getting things that are high quality. The new store will also have a lot of vintage clothing. What should we expect? I like things that are more masculine than feminine. We’ll have pieces that date up until the 1960s. You might see wornin jeans, beat-up leather jackets or some sparkly Hattie Carnegie jewelry. And I also love 1960s pieces — they’re so playful.

What sort of upholstery have you been producing lately? I’ve been doing chairs in vintage menswear fabrics, like tweeds. And this past summer, I did a bunch of little chairs in Lilly Pulitzer prints.

important to our clients. We did over one million facials last year. We know skin from a spa perspective and from a makeup perspective. The M-61 products are meant to be used under cosmetics.

PHOTO KATE WARREN

Marla Beck’s business card should probably read “Fountain of Youth Builder.” The Bethesda resident and co-founder of the Bluemercury (bluemercury .com) apothecary/spa chain (now with nearly 50 outposts nationwide) spends her time researching anti-aging creams and dermis-perfecting cosmetics. Last year, she launched M-61, a skincare line that draws on the company’s 13-year history. We grabbed some face-time with Beck at Bluemercury’s Bethesda outpost, where we chatted about holiday cosmetic trends and the science behind her products. You have eight shops in the D.C. area. Do you notice any trends in the local markets? Color is not as strong in makeup in D.C. as in Philadelphia and New York, but fragrance has always been leading-edge here. I think that’s because D.C. shoppers are avid travellers and we carry a lot of global scents. And we sell more candles at the Dupont location than any other store in the entire company.

What’s something every skin care routine should include? Exfoliation. As you age, the cells don’t turn over as quickly so the dryness on your skin comes from the dry skin sitting on it. If you exfoliate, you bring out the new skin. It’s counterintuitive, because you’re being abrasive to your skin.

Marla Beck’s M-61 skincare line, which she co-produced with her husband, Barry, combines medical technology with natural ingredients ($19-$78).

What makeup trends are you anticipating for the holiday party season? The red lip continues to be popular. I think that will translate to holiday for people. Women in this market don’t really wear a red lip unless they’re going out. How does M-61 differ from other skin care lines? We married medicalgrade ingredients with natural ones because it was

Is there one thing we can do today to improve the quality of our skin? There are a few: Don’t touch your face. It’s bad for your hygiene and skin care. Everybody looks better with their brows done. And don’t ever go to bed with makeup on. How do you decide which products to sell in the store? We’re not the trendy shop. It’s things we love that we believe are lasting quality. I still try and test everything that ends up in the store. I’ve burned my face 100 times. It’s got to be efficacious and leading edge. And I have a bias toward brands that have founders behind them, like Trish McEvoy and Bobbi Brown.

Captive audiences and little competition inspire clothing startups in the Capital City TEXT HOLLEY SIMMONS

Ever since he started his eponymous line of American-made button-downs and sportswear for men in D.C. in 2011, Read Wall has been tempted to decamp to New York, where a fashion label like his could benefit from access to both quality materials and a larger client base.

“I’ve gotten close to moving,” Wall says. “But I stay in D.C. because the fashion scene here is not quite as saturated. There’s more of a frontier feel to it.” Wall is among multiple style entrepreneurs who are working D.C.’s fledgling fashion landscape to their advantage: Because there is less competition, it’s easier for such companies to make a name for themselves, and because of the comparatively limited number of outlets to choose from, D.C. residents serve as a sort of captive audience hungry for homegrown style. Founded in D.C. in July by Arti Anand and Komal Kushal Raj, the brand collaborates with designers in New York, Los Angeles and beyond to create bespoke women’s clothing, mainly work-ready frocks in solid and colorblock styles ($280-$350). You can customize their hues, hemlines and many other features. “D.C. is a market of professional women who appreciate fashion and have a point of view,” Anand says. “They're excited about the custom concept.” That more and more fashion-focused companies are opting to stick around D.C. is a promising sign. While it’s unlikely we’ll rival the runways of Paris or Milan, their existence suggests there’s an undeniable costume change in our midst.

Sometimes, the primping and planning before a big bash is just as enjoyable as the drinking, dancing or dining at the event that follows. During the holidays, we’ve got more chances to dress — or dandy — up in this winter’s best evening looks, from fairy-tale worthy gowns to tuxedos Don Draper would love. We shot this story on men's and women’s soiree style on location in several spaces that have recently received dramatic makeovers. They include Adams Morgan’s new, old-school barbershop, Wise Owl Club (2010 18th St. NW; 202-705-9425) and Union Market (1309 5th St. NE; 202543-5459), the food bazaar revitalizing the zone north of Massachusetts Avenue NE (NoMa, to those in the know) as well as the recently transformed Mount Vernon Square carriage house of Anna and Dan Kahoe, the owners of vintage home boutique GoodWood (1428 U St. NW; 202-986-3640).

RIZZOLI

What sort of upholstery have you been producing lately? I’ve been doing chairs in vintage menswear fabrics, like tweeds. And this past summer, I did a bunch of little chairs in Lilly Pulitzer prints.

THE

MODERN LUXURY STEEPED IN RICH HISTORY

One of Georgetown’s few remaining nineteenth–century large estates still intact to its original appearance the WilliamsAddison House has recently undergone a multi-million dollar restoration and renovation. It has been meticulously and thoughtfully planned to incorporate luxury modern amenities while ensuring the property remains one of Georgetown’s historic and grand estates for years to come. Capital City Real Estate, a Washington, D.C.-based development firm, in conjunction with acclaimed architect Dale Overmyer from Dale Overmyer Architects based in Georgetown, worked in concert to masterfully restore this home to its former grandeur. Acclaimed and award winning Fritz and Gignoux landscape architects were retained to design the stately grounds. The Williams-Addison House offers the ambiance, convenience, and esteem of a Georgetown address. THE HOME This Second Empire mansion was originally constructed circa 1815-1817. Properly designed to appeal to and impress its owner and guests, the renovation and restoration of this home will command a sense of true elegance by preserving and enhancing a historic past. The main house consists of over 10,000 square feet of living space. At each turn you are welcomed into a space that is both inviting and comfortably proportioned for its intended purpose. This home has been outfitted for grand scale entertaining, luxurious private living and relaxation afforded only by homes of its quality. Included are twin parlors which flank an octagonal

The estate’s upper levels house six bedrooms, including a master suite comprising an entire wing. The lower level provides space for entertainment such as gaming and exercising. Other notable features include additional sleeping quarters, a media room, wine cellar and a professional catering kitchen.

The Williams-Addison House was designated as a historic landmark and placed on the DC Inventory of Historic Sites in 1964. It is included in the Large Houses and Mansions subsection of Georgetown (1751-1895) section of the Inventory. Further, it is also a contributing building in the Georgetown Historic District. The Landmark Amendment states, in part:
