n today’s world, time is more valuable than ever. Finding the time to apply your makeup and making it last is hard work for women with their busy days and schedules. Rushing to work, meetings, luncheons and events leaves very little time in between to touch up, much less amp your makeup up for an evening out. Thicken up your eyeliner. With just a flick of the wrist, you can turn it into a wing or a cat eye. Skip mascara on lashes as it could risk looking clumpy and over done.
You can add a bit of shimmer to your lids for an instant wow factor. Create a little smoke with your eye makeup using the same color eyeshadow you have on and ramping up the intensity.

s summer winds down to its final simmer, we’re focusing on our fall back-to-work wardrobe. For inspiration, we looked to characters from popular TV shows “House of Cards,” “The Good Wife” and “Scandal.” What would Claire Underwood, Kalinda Sharma and Olivia Pope wear? To deconstruct the individual style of these powerful women, FW headed for the elegant topfloor offices at 15th and L where we asked models Alex Cunningham and Kelsey McGuire to pose for Washington Post photographer Marvin Joseph in the best new clothing picks for autumn.

FW: What’s one of the first things you do when you get back from summer vacation?
AP: I schedule an appointment to get my hair cut. Sun, water, wind, salt and chlorine wreak havoc on your hair. Get it trimmed. FW: Okay, is this blasphemous to ask — what if you have just a tiny bit of color, ahem, tan, from your vacation break; how do you keep it for a while?

long with updating your wardrobe for a new season, getting back to work means recharging your beauty routine. For expert advice on how to accomplish that, we went to Ada Polla, CEO of Alchimie Forever, a gentle, anti-aging line of skin-care products. She had just returned from a vacation in Greece when we talked about how she gets back to business. JANET KELLY
AP: Exfoliate your skin — use something gentle like Aveeno’s. Of course, I’m partial to Alchimie’s Gentle Refining Scrub. It will actually brighten your skin and make that light tan last longer. Don’t use an aggressive scrub or peel, though. On skin that already has a high melanin content, it can lead to hyper- or hypo-pigmentation.
sunscreen, but that total sunblock you need can clog your pores. FW: Should you then change your sunscreen after vacation?
AP: I use an oil-based, waterproof La Roche Posay (laroche-posay.us) product with a very high SPF when I’m on the beach, but when Ada Polla I return to the city, where my time outside is limited, I use one that’s not quite as serious. Still, don’t underestimate city sun; wear sunscreen. FW: Any more post-vacation skin tips?
FW: What if you spent the summer at your desk and look it? Any suggestion?
AP: Get that glowing vacation look without the rays. Use a bronzer, but only until the beginning of September. After Labor Day, a tan looks fake.
AP: Don’t forget about your feet. People get pedicures, but it’s not just how your nails look. Feet get a beating from constant exposure during the summer. Alchimie’s Dry Skin Balm softens and moisturizes the skin; any Jergens body lotion also does the trick.
FW: What’s your take on facials?
FW: Final words of advice?
AP: I’m a fan. Whether you have them routinely or not, post-vacation, it helps exfoliate your skin and get it back in good shape. It’s great to use a waterproof

1. Only a handful of people will know that the Samarcande chess-piece on your desk is an Hermes bagatelle, only $940. Sculpted from palissander wood and studded with magnets, the 6-inch-tall puzzle is perhaps a more thrifty choice for office decor than the Hermes Desk Blotter in matte black alligator. Give this scroll of recycled bonded leather 3 1/2 inches of desk space and it will give you a way to prop up your cellphone (it holds smartphones up to 2 3/4 inches wide without a case) and comes in black, blue and red. Bomber jacket leather, the same used in the jackets of World War II fighter pilots, makes a durable desk organizer, for sure. You could cover every desk in the office with the scads of toys and gizmos that officeplayground.com sells. This 7-inch-tall version of Newton’s Cradle (confession: we didn’t even know this executive-toy classic had a name) has a wood base and is $14.99. If this one doesn’t suit you, the site offers eight variations. 5. The Six-Man Clock, a kinetic sculpture by inventor Gordon Bradt, just may be the ultimate desktop toy. Available from Kinetico Studios in Eureka Springs, Ar. (479-253-9114), it’s $1,800. If that’s too steep, the inventor’s site, gordonbradt.com, points out that used clocks can be found on eBay (and repaired if necessary by Kinetico Studios). 6.
