Can anyone resist a June bride? Not us! It gives us a chance to troll the stores for luscious gowns and little touches we might otherwise overlook. And then we get to show off the gorgeous model Cindy Nguyen, thanks to Cima Talent Management of Ellicott City, Md. Her bridal-gown pictures were taken by the talented young Washington Post photographer Marvin Joseph. And, as they say on late-night TV, there’s more: resort talk (page 12), diamond speak (page 11), makeup secrets (page 6), entertaining doodads (page 7). We’re croonin’ for June! This publication was produced by The Washington Post Custom Content department in partnership with mylittlebird.com, a Web site for Washington women, and did not involve the news and editorial departments of The Washington Post. PHOTOGRAPHER
Native Washingtonian Marvin Joseph began working for The Washington Post so young he had to bring a note from his mother. Okay, not true. But he was a news aide at age 19, a photo intern and, by age 24, a news photographer. His photos have also appeared in Washingtonian magazine, Essence, Ebony and Jet magazines and in the books “Michelle: Her First Year As First Lady” and “The Inauguration of Barack Obama: A Photographic Journal.” He also took Pulitzer Prizenominated photos and lit up our lives as he enthusiastically shot our bridal fashions.

ridal makeup is my favorite! I love everything about weddings. There are a lot of factors taken into consideration when working with brides during their consultations to achieve the perfect makeup look for the big day. Some of these need-to-know details include dress style, venue and, of course, the bride’s personality. Brides come into the salon wanting a whole new level of makeup application for their wedding. It is my job to listen to the bride and use my expertise to deliver the look that she trying to achieve. FW Scout’s editor tagged along earlier this month for a makeup trial with Grace, a bride-to-be looking for a more dramatic look. Quite a few of today’s brides are looking for that Red Carpet look. They have to look stunning in person and in HD video, in professional photos and on Instagram. That being said, brides have to also look beautiful in natural and bright light as well in dim and candle light. These are a few of the reasons why brides should hire and trust a professional makeup artist on her special day. Last month, my picks included several makeup products that are “must haves” for everyday use. Makeup primer, a good foundation and water-proof mascara are necessities. Here are a few more items I highly recommend adding to the routine on your wedding day:
Individual lashes look and feel more natural while strip lashes are easier to apply and have a more dramatic effect. Tip: Use a dark toned adhesive glue. Lip Gloss
Carl Ray lip gloss provides long lasting color and shine that looks and feels awesome. You can wear alone or pair it with a lipstick. A must have for my brides. Tip: Outline and fill most of your lips with a neutral lip liner. Then apply gloss to lips for a pucker that will last. YSL Touché Éclat highlighter
Corrector, light concealer and highlighter all in one amazing push button pen. Great to use on bare skin alone, over foundation and concealer or anywhere that needs brightening. Tip: Perfect for quick touchups under the eyes.
Lashes
I love Ardell Lashes and how well they open up the eyes and give a little extra pop.
Bobbi Brown blotting paper
Helps to keep makeup in place as it draws out the oil
on your face without looking cakey. Tip: Blotting papers also come with a mirrored compact for quick touchups. Skindinavia setting spray
Ultra fine mist that keeps your makeup looking fresh and flawless all day or evening long. The last thing a bride wants to do is to worry about her makeup fading or having a meltdown. Remember to take care of your skin, whether you’ve got a big day coming up or not! Don’t forget to wear sunblock, drink a lot of water, eat healthy, exercise and get plenty of sleep. Find the details on Carl’s bridal necessities at FashionWashington.com and get more bridal beauty tips on carlraymakeupartist.com.

The set of four is $59 at Restoration Hardware stores and rh.com. 2. The business end of the chrome corkscrew resides inside a handsome chrome wine stopper. It’s $40 at Appalachian Spring stores and appalachianspring.com. 3. Encourage your newlywed friends to have some fun with monogrammed, heavyweight, water-resistant coasters made just for them. Two dozen Letter Perfect Coasters are $20, but you can certainly order more, from The Stationery Studio, thestationerystudio.com. 4. It’s $102 at Bloomingdale’s stores and bloomingdales.com. 5. This vintage-looking silver-plated cocktail shaker has classic drink recipes incised on it. $79 at Restoration Hardware stores and rh.com. 6. States Streamlined strapless styles, demure lace gowns with long sleeves, and vintage looks from every era have replaced poufy, fairytale-princess fashions. One size does not fit all, though, so model Cindy Nguyen goes down three bridal paths — trying on traditional, minimal and retro dresses, complete with appropriate accessories.

Minimal
Crop tops are everywhere this season. Cindy goes minimal and modern in hers, a Monique Lhuillier jacquard draped-bandeau top ($1,600), paired with full A-line tealength skirt ($2,700, available at Carine’s Bridal Atelier, 1726 Wisconsin Ave. NW; 202-965-4696). Simple, elegant accents come courtesy of 18-karat white-gold pearl and diamond earrings ($1,950) and a pearl and diamond bracelet ($3,800) at Boone & Sons, 5550 The Hills Plaza, Chevy Chase, Md., 301-657-2144. Chevy Chase. Sarah Jessica Parker “Marlene” pumps with brogue detail ($375, nordstrom.com) give Cindy’s feet a silvery shine.

Retro
Channeling Lady Mary in “Downton Abbey” and Daisy in “The Great Gatsby,” Cindy wears a flapper-esque beaded and sequined shimmering dress ($4,950) and feather shrug ($1,225), both at Rizik’s (1100 Connecticut Ave. NW, 202-223-4050) from Duchess of Cambridge favorite Jenny Packham. Adding to the ’20s vibe is her Buttercup Halo ($250, BHLDN at Anthropologie, 3222 M St. NW; 202-337-1363). Bejeweling ears, 18-karat white-gold diamond drop earrings ($5,500, Boone & Sons, Chevy Chase). Above right: Round diamond with micro pave halo ($12,500, Boone & Sons, Chevy Chase). Pearl box clutch ($250, BHLDN at Anthropologie, Georgetown).

It’s All About the Cut
T
hree generations of family-owned jeweler Boone & Sons are active in running the business, and at least two generations are working at each of the company’s locations in Chevy Chase, Md., McLean, Va., and downtown D.C. Nellie Boone, granddaughter of founder French Boone — who still works at the McLean store on a regular basis — is the marketing director of the company. We chatted with her about what to consider when buying an engagement ring.
Introducing
Nellie Boone shares her sparkling wisdom FW: Is there a trend now or a popular style for an engagement ring? NB: The most popular current style is a cushion-cut
diamond with a pave diamond halo. But you can never go wrong with choosing a diamond round solitaire; it’s the LBD (in fashion speak, Little Black Dress) of jewelry.
FW: Do most of your clients look for diamond rings rather than another stone? NB: Ninety-five percent of the engagement rings we sell
FW: So, what should you avoid? NB: A stone with any noticeable
yellow or an imperfection you can detect with your eye. You want something visually clean and white. And it should be certified through the Gemological Institute of America.
FW: If you’re on a budget, is there a way to get a deal? NB: You can often get a good buy on a vintage piece. (Boone &
are diamonds. The most likely departure is a sapphire ring.
Sons is one of the area’s largest estate buyers.)
FW: What size diamond is most in demand for your clients? NB: One to two carats are standard in the city.
FW: What’s the best way to care for a diamond ring? NB: Contrary to popular belief, a diamond can chip. Don’t hit
FW: What’s the biggest misconception about buying a diamond? NB: Most guys are anxious to get their fiancées the nicest
ring they can. They think colorless and flawless stones are the best, while the most important thing in looking for a stone is the cut. That determines brilliance, and that’s what you see.
it on anything and don’t lift weights when you’re wearing one. To keep it sparkling, the best home remedy is to immerse it in a hotwater-and-ammonia solution and gently clean with a toothbrush. FW: Any other words of advice? NB: Yes, don’t make the purchase too much of an academic
decision. This should be an emotional buy. Look at stones and choose one that speaks to you.

Resort Weddings Can Be a Win-Win
T
hree brides pick three different resorts for their wedding, each for her own reasons. And guess what? They all turn out to have made the right decision! Let’s hear it for regional resorts that have turned the wedding business into a win-win situation.
final decision: The Greenbrier (300 W. Main St., White Sulphur Springs, W.Va. 24985; 855-453-4858). “My parents loved the Greenbrier,” she says — and “the minute I walked in, I fell in love with it.” It had the “grand” vibe she wanted, the architecture, the unique Dorothy Draper decor (the oversize decorative details “make you happy”). Sandbrook’s nuptials are slated for December, and she has more than a leisurely weekend in mind: horse-drawn sleigh rides to the rehearsal dinner, Santa for the kids at brunch, karaoke at the sports bar. Gina DeBlasis-Kinder had everyone from kids to an 88-year-old grandmother at her wedding at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort (1001 Lafayette Dr., Farmington, Pa. 15437; 724-329-8555, nemacolin.com), in southwestern Pennsylvania. Again, it was the allinclusive atmosphere that reigned: Nemacolin has rock-climbing, a zipline, even a zoo. DeBlasis-Kinder, once a Pittsburgh wedding planner, points out that Nemacolin doesn’t have minimum hotel-room blocks or food and beverage minimums for groups of fewer than 40 people. That’s an important question to ask right away, she says. That doesn’t mean the answer is a simple one. Nemacolin confirms there’s no minimum room block but says there could be a food and beverage minimum for a larger number of guests. At the Greenbrier the formula is: An average 150 guests in the premium Cameo Ballroom on a Saturday from May through October requires a minimum 40 guest rooms for two consecutive nights and a minimum food and beverage expenditure of $25,000. Another day, another season and the costs drop. The Omni Homestead has a 10-room block minimum; April through October its food and beverage minimum for 100 guests would be about $20,000, and off-season somewhat lower. But all the resorts, the brides agreed, “are willing to work with you.” And all the brides remarked on how easy and convenient each resort made it for them. As bride Laura Cole said about her Greenbrier wedding, “If anything went wrong, I didn’t know about it!” Nancy McKeon
A resort wedding can be as natural as Nemacolin, shown here, as grand as the Greenbrier ballroom, at top, as intimate as corners of the Omni Homestead, above left. Or all three. 12 | FashionWashington.com | JUNE 2014

Mary Ann Layman explains that she has been going to The Homestead, now the Omni Homestead (1766 Homestead Dr., Hot Springs, Va. 24445; 540839-1766, thehomestead.com), all her life. She even made her debut there. So getting married there this past April was a no-brainer. She loved the all-inclusive atmosphere, a characteristic the Omni Homestead shares with other resort venues: Guests didn’t have to leave early to drive home, they could just retire upstairs. It was, she says, a leisurely weekend with friends and family playing golf and shooting sporting clays. And, oh yes, a wedding ceremony. Paige Sandbrook didn’t have a venue already in mind when she and her fiance began planning their wedding. Growing up in a military family, she explains, “I was born in Pennsylvania, grew up in New York, lived in Atlanta, and spent time in Newport, Rhode Island.” Sorting through all that propelled her and her fiancé all over the Eastern seaboard.
