from the editor

After some long, hard months, we gleefully escaped to Rehoboth Beach in Delaware to shoot this summer’s playclothes (page 7). The beach town was just shaking off the last of its winter gray, but already the gazebo at the Boardwalk Plaza Hotel showed how we might watch ocean waves — and even wave back. Walter Nicholls’s Escape story sends us westward, to farm country (page 16), and designer Tricia Huntley’s digs (page 12) are right here in town. FLOTUS makeup artist Carl Ray shares summer beauty ideas (page 4) and Alli Webb talks about her Drybar salons (page 17). Kevin Allen’s interest in photography was sparked by his older brother 20odd years ago. While his brother had the good sense to become a firefighter, Kevin persisted with photography and for the past 10 years has shot for a wide variety of editorial and commercial clients. When he’s not chasing the light, he’s chasing one of his three kids. See his beach-side fashion photos on our cover and on starting on page 7.

Walter Nicholls escape writer

Walter Nicholls is the dining columnist for The Georgetowner newspaper and dining critic and columnist for Arlington Magazine. He’s a former writer for The Washington Post Food section. When he’s not trying local restaurants and gourmet shops, he’s probably at his farm in Rappahannock County, Virginia, where he grills up a terrific pork tenderloin. He sussed out the charms of Patowmack Farm on page 16.

Hooray, it’s May! Warm weather and dreamy thoughts of summer vacation are beckoning. So, FW decided we’d test the waters — not literally — and set out for the sandy shores of Rehoboth Beach with models Rachel Pang and Gabrielle Downing to test-drive the newest resort-ready fashions. By Janet Kelly Photography by Kevin Allen

Under a Victorian-inspired arbor at Rehoboth’s Boardwalk Plaza Hotel, Rachel and GABRIELLE are all smiles as they celebrate their escape to the beach.

Top: At twilight from her Boardwalk Plaza hotel room, Rachel surveys the ocean in a Ted Baker London belted midi-dress, $195 at Nordstrom, Montgomery Mall. Above: Gabrielle strikes a pose in her Maaji Mystic Paths Reversible Bustier Bikini ($132.50) and a fedora ($28), both at South Moon Under, Rehoboth Beach, and a Theory knit top, $190 at Nordstrom, Montgomery Mall. Right: Rachel wears an Isabel Marant tonal-print ruffle-trim silk top ($520) and floral print skirt ($375), both at Hu’s Wear. They’re paired with Sperry Top-Sider espadrille sandals ($59.95 at Nordstrom, Montgomery Mall), a scalloped tote ($65) and Kate Spade Highbrow sunglasses ($138), both from South Moon Under, Rehoboth. On Gabrielle, a Peter Pilotto orchid print dress ($1,545, Hu’s Wear), white Tory Burch Leighanne Thong sandals ($150, Nordstrom, Montgomery Mall) and Kate Spade pink aviators ($138, South Moon Under, Rehoboth). Both wear Chan Luu crystal wrap bracelets ($168.50 to $178.50, South Moon Under, Rehoboth).

Rachel is in a Band of Outsiders striped cotton shirt dress ($445, Hu’s Wear) and perforated Rally Keds ($49.95, Nordstrom, Montgomery Mall, nordstrom.com)

Stretchy cotton, men’s shirting material and viscose make dresses like those from Tory Burch and Band of Outsiders more versatile for everyday occasions.

ike most homes when we move into them, designer Tricia Huntley’s 1955 place is a work in progress, projects attacked as time and money allow. Since we last visited, Huntley has turned her attention to the main-level guest bedroom, painting it a pale blue and curtaining the window walls with sheers that let light in but keep prying eyes out.

12 | FashionWashington.com | MAY 2014

Above, Tricia Huntley’s cozy TV room. Right from top to bottom, the master bedroom, the exotically glamorous powder room and the airy living room.

kevin allen

Her own bedroom upstairs is a different story. “I think a bedroom is for sex and sleeping, and so it should be dark and sensuous,” she explains. “I don’t understand all those all-white bedrooms.” True to her word, Huntley has lined the walls of her bedroom in mediumdark grasscloth, including the ceiling. She placed the head of the bed directly under the room’s main window, using it, in effect, as a headboard. At night the “headboard” is a deep, dark background for the room’s moody decor. At four corners of the bed, dark diaphanous curtains rise almost to the ceiling, further making the bed the star of the room. Huntley’s juxtaposition of dark with light continues downstairs. The living room — almost all floor-to-ceiling windows — is light and airy, while the TV room is cozier. Grasscloth once again lines walls and ceiling — going for that “jewel-box thing,” she says. The chairs are upholstered in a crisp-looking fabric, but the fabric’s pattern reinforces their chubby silhouette. Accents in the room are modern ... ish. Is the goldtone fern-shape sconce climbing one wall brand new? 1950s Italian? Maybe we’re not supposed to know. Huntley’s ability to mix a 1970s chandelier with Queen Anne chairs in the dining room, a Louis XVI daybed with mid-century-modern chairs in the living room — this probably can be learned, but there’s no real template for the kind of mixing she does. But interior decoration does have rules. Such as? Well, one reason modern rooms tend to be painted all white is that there’s no crown molding to separate the wall color from the ceiling color. “Having two paint colors meet like that” — Huntley butts the sides of her hands together and sighs. “Knowing the reasons for things [such as the role of crown molding or wood casings around doorways] helps guide your decisions.” Which explains why Huntley’s hall and stairway are not yet painted: She has yet to decide how to case the stairway, which, of course in this open floor plan, is visible from the entryway and the living room. Until she does, the Huntley home remains a work in fabulous progress. Nancy McKeon

Escape

From Farm to Table to ... Farm In every season, guests come to her 40acre farm to dine in a glass conservatory and open-sided tent. In season, 90 percent of the heirloom-variety vegetables are grown on site with other foods sourced from regional farmers and top fishmongers. A flock of free-range chickens provides eggs for the pastry kitchen. Bit by bit Billand’s vision has grown, from home-cooked meals served by her five daughters, to far-more-refined presentations, composed by innovative executive chef Tarver King. King, who came on board in September, worked stints at Napa Valley’s French Laundry and, closer to home, at The Inn at Little Washington. For 2014, both the restaurant and the chef are nominated for RAMMY awards. Some people dream of changing jobs. Others, like Billand and two additional Loudoun women, make it happen. All three embraced the food and beverage industry, each in her own way. Fifteen minutes away on the outskirts of Lovettsville, inside a mid-19th-century barn, Molly Kroiz makes exceptional moist and creamy farmstead chevres at Georges Mill Farm, a 150-acre property

that has been in her husband’s family for eight generations. A fish geneticist by training, Kroiz opened the barn doors to the public last June for sales of her handcrafted cheeses. Kroiz milks her herd of 19 American Alpine dairy goats twice a day; her most popular product is “Catoctin,” an earthy and pungent semi-soft wheel with a complex flavor. Nearby in downtown Purcellville, Becky Harris, once a chemical engineer, now produces small-batch rye whiskey, gin and brandy in custom-made “pot column” copper stills. She makes the craft spirits; her husband, Scott, a former telecommunications specialist, runs the business end of their Catoctin

Creek Distilling Company. On an average Saturday, more than 200 folks, many in their 20s and 30s, stop by the Harrises’ very cool Prohibitionera-style tasting room. At the tasting bar, neat samples of the house spirits are sold in flights of three. Also available is a flight of tiny cocktails made with freshsqueezed juices and house-made bitters and syrups. Catoctin Creek spirits are widely available in Washington. But next time you’re out Loudoun way, ask for them by name, preferably at sunset under the tent at The Restaurant at Patowmack Farm. Alli Webb, Blowout Queen

Chic Chat

Her Drybar Is Turning Heads All Over Town

L

ongtime hairstylist Alli Webb opened her first Drybar in the Los Angeles suburbs in 2010. The company now has 36 locations in eight states. Like them all, the D.C.area salons — Bethesda and Georgetown — offer only shampoos and blowouts. We recently spoke with Webb about the business and her customers. FW: Why choose Washington to set up shop? Webb: Since opening, we got so many requests for

a D.C. location on social media and over e-mail that it persuaded us to open here in 2012. In addition, as in New York, there are so many professional women here, be they lobbyists, high tech workers, Hill staffers, who want their hair to look good whether they’re sitting in their office, attending a conference or going to a board meeting that it just made good business sense. FW: What does a blowout cost? Can you describe your average customer? Webb: We charge $40. We used to say jokingly that

women with hair was our demographic. But we’ve got predominantly two types of customers — those who have stick straight hair who want volume and curl and those with hard-to-tame, long, thick, textured hair who want a smooth look. The Georgetown salon skews somewhat younger with single women and college students, than Bethesda, which is more family-oriented. [Malia Obama was spotted at Bethesda Drybar earlier this year. She came with a group of friends all primping for a dance at Sidwell Friends.]

FW: Is there a reason you wanted to stick to just doing a shampoo and a blowout? Webb: A shampoo, conditioner and

blowout sounds simple, but it takes a lot of energy to style hair in a certain way and make sure you do it well consistently, so that the experience is worth it. It feels good when someone washes your hair and makes you look like you’re ready for the Red Carpet, something you would never be able to achieve yourself. Customers feel like a million bucks. I also feel as if I’ve brought back an old-fashioned tradition of women going to the beauty parlor to get their hair washed and styled. FW: This is a hardworking town. What are your hours? Webb: The doors open at 7 a.m. on weekdays in

both salons. We’re open ‘til 9 p.m. Thursday-Saturday in Bethesda and ‘til 10 in Georgetown. We’re also open Sunday from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. in both places.

FW: You carry out the bar theme of the salon with your website graphics, style menus and by naming blow-out choices after cocktails. Customers can order a Straight Up, a Cosmopolitan, a Manhattan or a Mai Tai. Which one(s) are most popular with clients here? Webb: The Straight Up — smooth with a little bit of

body — is popular here, as is the Cosmo, a style with lots of loose curls. In Los Angeles, the favorite is the Mai Tai — a messy, beachy look. JANET KELLY
