In preparation for fall, the FW team escaped in August — to New York to shoot the Fall Fashion Roundup, to Richmond to lavish ourselves in the luxury of the famous Jefferson hotel. We escaped our ordinary lives with a chance to be whisked out to Tysons to chit-chat with Sarah Jessica Parker (we talked about shoes — what did you think?). We even escaped Washington’s traditional-furniture reputation with a visit to Doug Meyers and his impeccable collection of Danish modern. We first noticed Brook Mowrey when we saw the fantastic Marie Antoinette gown she made out of pieces of paper for the window of the Periwinkle gift shop in Northwest Washington (you can still see it on Brook’s Facebook page). sweater weather It’s one of those fashion conundrums that when it’s 85 degrees Fahrenheit outside, we’re photographing clothing you could wear in a deep freeze. Such was the case in mid-August when FW headed to New York to shoot our September issue. Paper artist Brook Mowrey came to our rescue, fashioning a fall fantasy of paper leaves and thistles, the backdrop for the season’s trends of oversize coats, cozy knitwear, rich brocades and fun furs. A Master of Modern
“I
like storage pieces,” says Doug Meyers, as my eyes travel around the living room of his Columbia Heights home.
“Surprise, right?” The man has a point: Lining the walls of the Victorian row house are rosewood buffets, sideboards, walnut wall units combining shelves with cubbies that lie behind tambour doors. Although the place looks a little like a furniture showroom, in fact it’s a home that Meyers rents with housemates, who allow him to furnish the main level with midcentury modern pieces he’s been collecting for 15 years or more. How else would they get to live with a orange velvet sectional sofa that’s 50 years old and still going strong? The storage pieces serve Meyers as more than eye candy. “I’m a hoarder,” he acknowledges. He flips open cabinet door after cabinet door, opens a succession of drawers. All are filled to the brim with small midcentury accessories. Meyers prizes Danish pieces over American ones, dark wood over light. “The Danes know their designers the way we know our presidents,” he says, pointing to a dresser by Finn Juhl, considered by most to be the father of modern Danish design. It’s a special piece he values at about $12,000. He also has a Model 45 chair by Finn Juhl and matching settee that he bought as an investment. Meyers loves the stories that accompany each piece he has bought, often from older couples downsizing. “They’ve had the furniture for 50, 60 years, and it’s in perfect condition — it’s been loved,” he says. And for the past four years Meyers has been able to sell that furniture to the children or

grandchildren of their original owners. Yes, as these things often unfold, the collector — mentored by painter (and collector) Robin Rose — became a dealer, turning eight storage units packed with furniture into a shop, Modern Mobler, with locations on upper Georgia Avenue NW and on Howard Avenue in Kensington, Md. Meyers came to Washington from his home near Atlantic City to attend George Washington University, where he got an undergraduate degree in finance and a master’s in taxation. But the midcentury modern call was stronger than his job recruiting financial and tax professionals for companies (his recruiting career ended with a position at Choice Hotels, “the best company I ever worked for”). Now he rotates furniture in and out of his living room, selling to a wide customer base. “The largest bloc is people in their 30s and 40s, often with their first house. They say they’re ready for ‘real furniture now.’ ” The scale of midcentury pieces, Meyers points out, is also good for those who live in small condos downtown. “They don’t have room for 90-inch sofas.” The popularity of “Mad Men” on TV has made Meyers’s living room furniture more valuable. But more important to him is this: “These pieces are the best design of their day,” he says. “If you take care of them, they will last another 50, 60 years.” NANCY McKEON

here are reasons why some hotels rate five stars from Forbes. Like pulling up to a grand porte-cochere in a 20-year-old pick-up, duct-tape patched and loaded with old house parts, and being greeted like her ladyship back from the hunt. (Which she was: Richmond has fantastic salvage yards). Such a place is The Jefferson in Richmond, Virginia, exorbitantly gracious and luxurious to the tips of the terry slippers set out beside your turned-down bed and the Molton Brown soaps and creams in the marble bathroom. Built in 1895 by Colonel Lewis Ginter, a Confederate officer and tobacco baron, who also designed the beautiful Ginter gardens on the edge of town, the Beaux-Arts masterpiece immediately and forevermore became the centerpiece of Richmond’s society events. Among the guests were 12 U.S. presidents, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Charlie Chaplain, Elvis and most of the cast of the recent hit movie “Lincoln.” A weekend here could be filled without leaving the premises. There’s a lowerlevel health club, spa and beauty salon. Palms surround the second-floor indoor pool, which gives out onto a sundeck overlooking rooftops that range from antebellum to contemporary. As for food, there are divine grits in the casual TJ’s, and Southern-accented

fare in the more formal Lemaire. Morning coffee can be taken in the upper lobby, where a life-size Carrara marble statue of Thomas Jefferson stands beneath the vast stained-glass dome of a Tiffany stained-glass skylight. Even more impressive is the sensational lower lobby, dominated by an extraordinary sweeping staircase that may have inspired the one in “Gone With the Wind,” the steps that Rhett swooped Scarlett up in the film’s most palpitating scene. Have we mentioned that this place is astonishing to look at? Set at city center, it takes no more than 10 minutes to reach any part of the Confederate capital, from the Riverwalk along the sparkling James, to the mile-long stretch of bistros and boutiques in Carytown, and myriad historic sites. Distances between most attractions are amusingly listed in yards, not miles, on hotels.com. Room rates begin at $350, but there are frequent special offers. arah Jessica Parker arrived at Nordstrom in Tysons Corner at the end of August to introduce the fall season of her exclusiveto-Nordstrom SJP shoe line. The store hummed with the excitement. Although she wasn’t due until 5 p.m., the line started forming to buy shoes and snag her autograph at 9 a.m. that morning. We got a chance to chat with her about her new collection and footwear philosophy. Manolo Blahnik CEO George Malkemus, Sarah Jessica’s partner in producing the line, chimed in. FW: You’re a believer in high heels, which makes up the majority of your collection, but what do you walk your kids to school in? SJP: I make two runs every day from home to school and
back; my priority is safety, so I wear weather-appropriate, practical shoes — Converse high-tops, Hunter boots, boots with lining. FW: Love the pale pink grosgrain ribbon trim on the back seam of your shoes. Is there a story behind that? SJP: It’s a bit of nostalgia. When I was a little girl, we
wore ribbons in our hair every day. The pink shade makes a great contrast to the shoe colors, and it’s a signature of the brand. FW: I’ve read that you’re very involved in the design process and were influenced by shoe designers whose stores were popular in New York City in the ‘70s. Who were some of your favorites? What impressed you? SJP: Charles Jourdan, Maud Frizon, Walter

Steiger. Charles Jourdan was the first to do color; I just loved the silhouette. Maud Frizon did these fabulous purple heels. Fine leather straps, suede bottoms and Italian workmanship made these shoes what they were. You could almost bend them in half and you made them your own on your foot. Supremely sexy.
FW: Do you feel as if your role as Carrie Bradshaw was a gift? SJP: Absolutely. It was an enormous privilege both professionally
and creatively to work at HBO, to play opposite talented women, to shoot in a city that I love and to tell life stories.
FW: What about the Manolo Blahniks Carrie was famous for wearing? SJP: They were a huge influence. The BB’s are one of the great
shoes of all time.
FW: BB? GM: It stands for Brigitte Bardot. FW: What do you think distinguishes your line? SJP: Shoes today have so much stuff on them. Although it’s
harder to do well because it shows every mistake, we like to keep the design simple. They integrate more easily with your wardrobe that way. Plus, the shoes are comfortable. They’ve got padding right where you need it — under the ball of your foot. Janet Kelly
