EDITOR’S LETTER
FROM THE DIRECTOR How did the year fly by so quickly? It only feels like we were just ringing in the new year with a glass of champagne and now we're getting ready to toast to 2017!
We've ran some fun competitions where we've sent you to the movies, dressed you for the spring races and given away some indulgent beauty pamper prizes.
Last month, we celebrated 5 years of Fashion Weekly fun and as we jump into summer I would like to press pause and quickly recap on a few dramatic changes that strutted its way into 2016.
Capri by Fraser, Brisbane and the FW team hosted a Melbourne Cup event which you once again, amazingly supported.
In March we switched up the magazine and turned it into Brisbane's only seasonal style guide.
It's been a year full of incredible fashion, lots of wonderful local events and what feels like millions of words typed to share the latest news in fashion, beauty and lifestyle.
Fashion Weekly Stylist launched in July and one of the highlights was seeing our client walk the red carpet at the EMMY Awards in L.A.
From Brisbane to New York, each one of you has shown us support, encouragement and love. Because of you, we are able to do what we enjoy the most every single day.
October saw us as the official media sponsors for Brisbane Fashion Weekend and we were also involved with Brisbane Fashion Month where we met many of you lovely local fashionistas.
So on that note, cheers to 2017 where we will see more fashion, more beauty and more lifestyle, and it will all be for YOU.
The boys have been jumping on our website and we've finally listened. In October we launched our Menswear section and signed our first Menswear Ambassador, Caleb Fleet.
Director & Publisher Stacey O'Keeffe

FASHION WEEKLY TALKS
SEÑORITA BRIGHTS Dive head first into this season's most coveted summery prints and bold block colours. We caught up with co-designer of Australian Label Mister Zimi, Zoe Paul, to talk latest collection, lust have shoes and why we're going crazy for Spanish influences.
INTERVIEW JESSICA LUNAN
WHAT IS SET TO BE THE KEY COLOUR? A reddish orange. The pop of colour is so fun and summery.
WHAT IS THE LUST HAVE SHOE? YOUR SPRING SUMMER 16/17 COLLECTION, 'BY THE SEA' WAS INSPIRED BY THE BEAUTIFUL LA MURALLA RAJA IN SPAIN. IN WHAT WAY DID IT INFLUENCE YOUR DESIGNS? The collection itself was influenced by the shoot location, a housing project on the coast of Spain. Known locally as the “The Red Wall” the project was built in 1968 by Richard Bofill and references the popular architecture of the Arab Mediterranean area and the tradition of the Kasbah. The collection takes inspiration from the striking building and its rich colour palette. We chose simple geometrics to complement the architecture and bold florals to provide contrast.
SHOULDER GRAZING EARRINGS AND OFF THE SHOULDER DESIGNS ARE KEY PIECES FOR THE SEASON. WHY DO YOU THINK SPANISH INFLUENCES IS SET TO BE A MAJOR TREND FOR THE SUMMER? Because it's so feminine and beautiful! Spanish women are some of the sexiest and most beautiful women alive, so why wouldn't we want to dress like them!
We have repeated our Majorca Heels this season. We did them 5 years ago and they were a hit. Given our Spanish inspired collection it was only natural that we brought them back. It's the staple shoe that is a natural tan colour to mix with our bold colours and prints this summer.
WHAT'S YOUR TOP STYLE TIP FOR INCORPORATING PRINTS INTO YOUR WARDROBE? Be confident in what you are wearing and just rock it.

elody Thornton has turned it on for the camera. Dressed in Sass & Bide for our cover shoot at Soleil Pool Bar, the aesthetic sets the tone with a chic palette of rich gold and white hues. The open air atmosphere and warm timber features wrap around the blue pool; nodding to an eternal summer. Dripping in sheen metallic, Thornton confidently moves to the next pose at the command of the flash. Her gaze settles under the beaming sun as she laughs convincingly, only for the photographer to capture her pearly gleam. It's this sort of physical composure that confirms the songstress has been in this business for most of her adult life. The former member of the infamous girl group, The Pussycat Dolls, has been focusing on her music career as an independent, solo artist. Her last music project was released in 2012 and has since left fans anxiously waiting.
“It takes a really long time‌. I ain't putting anything out that isn't perfect," she laughs. Her tune quickly changes as she continues, "It's taken me 5 years since my last project to find the producer that I'm working with now." Certain of her next move, she explains that she has been working tirelessly over the last few years. "There are some things in the works. I'm looking for as much visibility as possible to get my profile up and to get as many people aware of myself as an independent artist," she says.

er new EP which is set to drop in early 2017 is a way to reset and cement her sound. "At the beginning it starts very dark with a song called 'Pray for Me' and by the end, the last song on the EP is called 'Phoenix Rise'. So it's really cathartic," she says. "It has to do with the ups and downs that life takes you through from a woman's perspective [and] my perspective."
A typical day in the life of Thornton is more game, guts and unpredictability, than on-stage glamour. "I literally have to meet a producer and come to an agreement and then work together... It's like trying to find someone to marry. Or trying to find someone to leave your children to when you die. That's the hardest thing about being independent." She further explains, "The other thing is that I have to make the money and distribute it and take care of myself. Which in some ways is really empowering and the 21st century woman is really that." The 'strong woman' persona is inspired by her fascination around 1968 to the early 70s. Her mother is her visual inspiration and style icon who she says dressed really smart. "She was always making her own clothes and creating her own patterns. She was like: 'I'm not going to buy it, I'm going to make it." She goes on saying, "She's always done things her way but was inspired by other women and I find myself doing the same thing."

ften identified as part of The Pussycat Dolls, we delved into a deeper question of whether or not it gets exhausting and if the association will ever shift. She takes a minute and replies, "I don't think it will ever change. It's one of the things that I want to be identified with. I went through a lot with those women to build that brand. You can almost say it to anybody and they say: 'Oh yeah, I remember that' or you have people going 'fuck yeah, that was the shit." Times have changed and social media plays a big role in the promotional strategy of growing her brand and reaching her fans. She's able to connect and communicate directly to her following but that also comes with its challenges. "I feel from time to time pressure from Instagram or Twitter: 'Like, oh gosh, I need to get something up.' It has become part of the job. But I'll have a moment of clarity where I go ... I want to be strategic about what's going up on my Instagram I want it to make sense." How does she think that sort of social media pressure would have impacted her career when the girl group was together?
"I'm really grateful that social media picked up when the group was over. Because one of the things that people find themselves doing is kicking themselves - it's so impulsive and you send things out and then you're like, 'I didn't mean that.' I was in a girl group [and] there were emotions going around. There was anger."

he continues seriously, "I respect my band mates and I think that 'we' did such a fantastic job at keeping some level of respect for the brand and not going around and throwing allegations. Thornton takes a moment, "You know, I think we're really tasteful women but had social media been around at the time - we may of had some issues."
The well-trod road for the songstress is solidified with a clear direction of what she wants and where she's going. "Justin Timberlake said, 'I treat every project like I'm brand new and people don't know me.' It's true, there are some people who make it seem very seamless like Justin Timberlake. And then there are people like myself where there is a long period, it feels like a long period, from the last project to this one. It's really like I'm starting over." She's confident, concise and clear about her image and is determined not to drift away from her influences. "I'm specific about sonically what I want as well as visually." Maintaining the momentum and steering her way to success, she's ready to dominate her own way. "Well, opportunities ... come and you make the most of them and you either get on with your life and do it your way or sometimes new things come along," she says. "Seal is a good friend of mine ... and he said what people don't take into account is that there is always a little bit of luck in every major success." She pauses and says, "I think that everything that is meant to happen, happens."

BOLD AS EYES The runways have been dominated with bold, fierce makeup. Forget understated – the look of the moment is moody, strong and full of attitude. But it's a tricky one, and requires precision and symmetry. WORDS HANNA SLOAN
1 Use a stiff pointed brush or a felttipped liner pen – these are best for bold, controlled lines and building thickness.
2 Pull your eyelid outwards or up by the brow to hold the skin taut while you draw your design.
3 Don't attempt to do it all in one smooth line; start with a dotted line or feathery strokes and then trace back over it and thicken as needed. Or, use a white pencil liner to sketch out your design and then trace over it in black or colour.
4 Look down into a mirror instead of directly at it, to perfect the angles and lines.
5 Use a pointed cotton bud dipped in makeup remover to tidy up the shapes and remove any mistakes.

eing able to change a look is an important thing today, everyone wants versatility with their hair." Consumers seek mindfulness and wellbeing as an antidote to modern day stresses. They welcome colours that psychologically fulfill their yearning for reassurance and security. This collection reflects the most popular colours that are trending today. Introducing rose gold, a warmer rose tone that refreshes the blonde palette.
Faux fringes are also an essential thanks to our modern day influencers such as Gigi Hadid and Kylie Jenner. Women want to play with their looks and mix it up. We're living in a time where we have to keep the masses guessing which is why versatility is the hottest trend for summer.

Beauty's intrigue comes from the unexpected. From first glance, each look appears fresh and modern with an artistic pop of colour for a shock-factor. But once you've taken it all in, you will be pleasantly surprised at the edgy and quirky details that demand attention.
I’m
interested in the way the more extreme elements of fashion have become normal. Pop cult figures like Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber and Nicki Minaj are pushing the boundaries of acceptable social behaviour, but people take their young children to see them in concert.
Terry Richardson and Juergen Teller present their subjects in a way that is at odds with traditional photography, and are among the most sought after fashion photographers in the world. I am inspired to showcase individuality with colour, to show how the unconventional is the new conventional and how experimentation, error and creativity can have amazing results. I love strong bold shapes with eye catching, poppy colours. I'm inspired to explore the idea that something ordinary creates extraordinary beauty, how the extreme spectrum of fashion and society is expanding.

FW MOOD
Allnot asis itSeems The modern woman is leading the way with manicured toes in sky-high designer stilettos. She's surrounded by the pressures of weekly blow drys, monthly laser hair removal treatments and regular wardrobe updates.
WORDS STACEY O’KEEFFE
There is an unspoken pressure to look like she lives an Instagrammable lifestyle with regular morning lattes, #OOTDs, yoga poses and Friday afterwork cocktails. She's judged by her career choices to compete in a male dominated environment. Her single status and lack of motherly interest challenges social norms. Her home is a white, minimalistic apartment with lush golden tones and large mirrors. Her cleaner visits twice weekly, dry cleaning is dropped off every Wednesday and there's not a Monday that goes by without a Chinese food delivery by UberEats. Her morning routine calmly begins with a 20 minute shower and lengthy skin and makeup routine. The chaos starts when she blankly stares at her wardrobe knowing that there is nothing to wear. Her hair gets swept up into a messy bun and she powders her nose one more time before staring at the floor-drobe she created in just under 15 minutes. She plugs in her earphones and heads out the door listening to upbeat tunes to prepare her mind for the challenging day ahead. Her local coffee shop knows her regular order so there's no need to lineup. She plonks herself on the wooden stool and scrolls through Instagram before being handed her essential pick me up. Walking rapidly to the train-station with minutes to spare, she sees the perfect opportunity to photograph her warm latte and patent pumps on the grungy cement. She slays at work but finds herself regularly swiping on Tinder for some measly entertainment. Lunch breaks beg for gossipy chats about steamy office affairs and the countdown begins for wine o'clock. As per usual, leaving on time isn't an option but when she does scoot out the door her bestfriend or Tinder date promises a night of spontaneity. One drink always turns into a few too many and she stumbles into her quiet apartment wishing she'd made wiser choices. The alarm abruptly wakes her and she's confronted with a stranger on the left, red lipstick smeared on white pillowcases and a trail of clothes on the floor.
Un-phased, she gulps down an aspirin and a couple glasses of water before relentlessly dismissing the random guy so she can begin her regular morning routine. She whisks her way to the shower, puts on a face of makeup, flicks her lush locks to the side, zips up a fitted pencil skirt and slips into a pair of strappy Jimmy Choos. She feels like a hungover mess, but this can't frazzle her. Even if she doesn't feel put together, if she looks like it on social media - surely the battle has been won? A few double taps and encouraging comments from her followers is enough to give the ego-boost she so desperately requires. To capture the Instagram worthy moment, a quick sheet change is in order as she swaps her ruined pillow for the one in the guest bedroom. A couple of buttons on her shirt are undone to showcase some sneaky cleavage as she works on pouting just enough to give the illusion of a fuller pucker. She takes a few hundred shots but finally the flawless selfie is taken for the world to see. All that is left is the ultimate caption to hide a multitude of sins. After an hour of pondering, she decides to go with one, five-worded hashtag: #IWokeUpLikeThis. Now, she'll sit and anxiously wait in hopes to receive over 100 likes, 5 new followers and 10 comments telling her how hot she looks.
Welcome to the world that isn't all that it seems...

Style Rules World renowned fashion illustrator, Kerrie Hess shares her tips to creating an Instagrammable home. Behind every successful fashionista is a creative space that they call home. As a style icon and illustrator, Kerrie Hess has revealed how she has curated a divine sanctuary that is always timeless, chic and #InstaWorthy.
CREATING AN INSTAGRAMMABLE LIVING SPACE IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST TRENDS AND INFLUENCES IN INTERIOR DESIGN TODAY. SIMILAR TO WHEN YOU BEGIN ILLUSTRATING, WOULD YOU SAY STARTING WITH A WHITE ROOM AS A BLANK CANVASS IS KEY? KH: I think a white room does help to keep the background minimal. Although as this is something that most bloggers are doing, it's nice to have some unexpected elements in there so that the images have some personality. I think it's also nice to be as real and normal as possible in your images. There is so much 'perfection' on Instagram it's nice to see something real sometimes! WHITE REQUIRES A LOT OF UP-KEEP. WHAT'S YOUR ULTIMATE TIP TO KEEPING IT FRESH AND BRIGHT? KH: I only do white in wipeable surfaces like floors or leather furnishings. I tend to steer clear of white fabric as I have an 8 year old who is often colouring or painting next to me!
EXCLUSIVE ILLUSTRATOR KERRIE HESS SHARES INTERIOR STYLING TIPS INTERVIEW STACEY O’KEEFFE
DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS ON INCORPORATING METAL COMBINATIONS WITH A NEUTRAL INTERIOR PALETTE? KH: It depends on the feel of the room. Yellow gold is very girly when matched with pale pink and grey, but can be quite unisex with just black and white. Copper is a little more modern and current and silver is a classic. If you are unsure of how to bring in metallics, I would start with silver. It's the most neutral. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE INTERIOR AESTHETIC IN YOUR HOME? KH: My bedroom and living areas are all black, white and gold. Very neutral, and calm for switching off from work. Then my office is very girly in pink, white, grey and gold. It's inspired by the interior of a Christian Dior boutique! I think it's really important if you are creative to create an office space that you love going to. HOW DO YOU CHOOSE THE PERFECT PIECE OF ART FOR THE MAIN LIVING SPACE? KH: I have an oversized painting of my own of Grace Kelly in my living room. It's black and white and sits above a white regency buffet. It's perfect for the space as it's very simple and quite graphic. I recently sold my favourite original piece 'The Eyes' which was a large close up face, so I no longer have that one in my living room.
YOU'VE BEEN COMMISSIONED TO ILLUSTRATE FOR SOME OF THE LARGEST FASHION NAMES IN THE BUSINESS. YOU ALSO HAVE A RANGE OF IPHONE CASES AND ILLUSTRATIONS AVAILABLE ON YOUR WEBSITE. DOES IT THRILL YOU TO SEE YOUR WORK BEING ENJOYED BY ALL AGES? KH: Yes, absolutely. I think it's a nice mix. From phone cases, to Limited Edition Prints and large scale originals, I enjoy working in each medium. A recent art print of mine was of Audrey Hepburn was not only one of my favourites, but one of the quickest to sell out in my print shop. And my phone cases are all custom made to order in Australia, which is very important to me. DO YOU HAVE ANY EXCITING PROJECTS LINED UP FOR 2017 THAT YOU CAN TELL US ABOUT? KH: I have some exciting things in the works with The Ritz London, Laduree Paris and Jean Patou Paris. As well as more Limited Edition prints and original pieces. I am also currently looking for the ultimate pink lounge for the office.

NEW FITNESS ADDICTION WORDS HANNA SLOAN
“There is nothing more important than looking after your body," said Emily Berkelmans, co-founder of Premium Pilates and Fitness. I couldn't agree more, but lately I've been struggling to find the motivation to kick start my fitness routine. With so many exercise options on the market, how can I find the one for me? Allow me to introduce ClassPass, a monthly membership that offers a wide variety of fitness classes for less than a gym membership. At first I was nervous – I've always maintained a fit and healthy lifestyle in the past but have lately favoured the doughnut-to-mouth workout. Safe to say I was a little out of practice. So what was the first class I booked through the app? A high intensity interval training (HIIT) session at Lorna Jane Active Living Room. Go hard or go home! I didn't regret my decision, but I certainly could have eased into it a bit more. Exhausted and red-faced, I caught my breath long enough to chat to bubbly instructor Chloe Hullick afterwards, who told me “I'm always looking to empower and inspire women…I cater for all difficulties from beginner to advanced.” She also made good on her promise that I'd be sore the next day, which my colleagues noted as I half-crawled up the office stairs.

Two days later I was still hobbling like a wooden puppet (told you I was out of practice!), so I booked in for a class called Stretch at Premium Pilates. And stretch I did! I floated out feeling taller and looser. It was the perfect way to unwind and release my sore muscles. I asked instructor and co-founder Emily Berkelmans about the challenges involved in keeping active: “One challenge to exercise that I hear very often is time. I know that in this busy world we are all incredibly time poor. We should always make the time to keep our bodies healthy and active. ClassPass is great for anyone wanting to try many of the incredible fitness studios that Brisbane has to offer without having to pay high fees!” My next class was at Bikram Yoga at the Gabba. Ninety minutes of yoga in a heated room really took it out of me, but afterwards I felt incredibly rejuvenated. As a bonus, I noticed that sweating out the toxins did wonders for my skin! Later that week, this former ballerina loved Barre Body Brisbane's titular class like a shopaholic loves the word “sale”. By this stage I was feeling stronger already. The ballet- and Pilates-inspired workout is a full-body toning session for people of all skill levels, and takes place in a beautiful space. After just two weeks of classes, I noticed my body was more toned, my clothes less snug, and I felt energised. I lost two kilos! Of course, eating well was also a factor in my transformation. Exercise is an essential part of life and even though pizza may beckon, I can feel less guilty knowing that I'm frequently working out. Staying motivated is a constant struggle, especially because I prefer spontaneity over routine. Apart from offering variety and motivation, ClassPass enables me to meet a lot of new friends and keep my Snapchat and Instagram stories seriously entertaining. I don't know about you, but this feels like the perfect option for the modern-day woman. Multitasking is our domain after all. Curious to know more? Visit Class Pass and enjoy the benefits of variety. Imagine what you could achieve in a few short months…
