Specialized in Parts for Antennas and Various Electronics Hardware

CHINMORE Perfectly Demonstrates Exquisite Techniques of Taiwan 天線專用零件、各式電子五金製造

竣茂工業完美體現台灣精緻工藝 by Gang Hao Chang, Vice Editor-in-Chief of Fastener World Focusing on manufacturing parts for antennas and various copper/iron/steel/stainless steel/ Teflon electronics, plugs, and hardware components, Chinmore Industry Co., Ltd. has been one of the relevant industries’ most trusted and designated suppliers for more than 20 years. In terms of quality, lead time, and service, the three most critical requirements by the industry, Chinmore can always precisely meet its customers’ demands. Zero customer complaints and capabilities for processing urgent orders and offering customization are also advantages Chinmore has been so proud of for years, not to mention that in recent years it has invested in new plants and introduced advanced equipment and quality management systems to have its existing capacity and service upgraded to an exponential level.

Expanded Lathe Department and 50% Increase in Capacity In order to respond to different customers’ demands from the global market, Chinmore continues to enhance its capacity and technique. After it moved to the new plant in 2018, it expanded the lathe department on the one hand, making its parts processing capacity greatly improved by over 50%, and introduced sets of automated lathes from Japan on the other hand to increase its daily capacity, fill the needs of domestic and overseas customers in OEM/ODM, and shorten lead times. Many customers were all quite impressed by the efficiency of production when they visited the plant of Chinmore.

Hardware & Fastener Components - no.50/2020

“ Through relentless upgrade in capacity and plant expansion, we now have more capabilities to satisfy customers’ increasing and stricter requirements for sophisticated parts processing and make our brand image reputed as being always consistently highquality and reliable shine brighter on the international market,” said Chinmore president Wang.

The Professional Engineering Team to Evaluate Product Design Feasibility for Customers The realization of excellent quality unquestionably requires a group of professional engineers and technicians behind. When customers submit drawings or specifications of the products they need, Chinmore’s well-experienced team can immediately assist them in evaluating their production feasibility and manufacture some trial batches of samples before they are allowed by customers to go further to mass production, which could ensure the complete compliance of every piece of finished product with customers’ requirements and the precision and performance even better than customers’ expectations.

Multilaterally Integrated Manufacturing and Staff to Ensure Zero Defect of Finished Products As Chinmore’s products are widely applied in certain industries with a great demand for sophisticated parts (telecommunication in particular), all of its in-plant procedures including material pickup, material feeding, processing, testing, and delivery must be compliant with strict quality management systems. Chinmore has been also certified to ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 and has introduced the most advanced automated CNC machine, injection machine, and 3D projector for inspection into its plant. All procedures are synchronically integrated with the monitoring of engineers

and operators. Each batch of products in any process has to be confirmed with an “okay” before it is allowed to move to the next step, which is why the finished products of Chinmore can always demonstrate high precision and remain consistent quality after they are shipped to customers. In addition to outstanding and efficient integration, Chinmore can also offer various types in low volumes and separate shipments if customers submit such requests, which helps reduce customers’ inventory and cost pressure. As a result, over the past years Chinmore has established a close and long term partnership with several domestic and overseas customers. President Wang emphasized, “We hope we can continue to gain a fine reputation on the global market and make our customers have confidence in our products and trust in our expertise!” ►► Chinmore contact: Ms. Mandy Wang Email: mandy@chinmore.com.tw

Company Focus >> Newly-built Quality Control Room and Packaging Machines to Enhance Service One of the most eye-catching features of the new office is the newly-built quality control room. Sun Chen Fasteners is planning to introduce projectors, depth gauges and so on to establish a strict quality control system. It is also planning to add more devices for measuring dimensions and will certainly consider the possibility of hiring more QA staff. According to Chen, quality control is essential and to expand the quality inspection items in the company can streamline quality control. In terms of any other quality inspection items requested by customers, Sun Chen Fasteners will also try every effort to send them to other professional third-party units for inspection.

S

un Chen Fasteners Inc. is always well-k nown for its wide-ranging service. “Being efficient is our commitment, having work done well is our responsibility, sustainable operation is our goal, and making customers satisfied is our honor,” Sun Chen Fasteners President Chen said with a smile. In the beginning of 2020, Sun Chen Fasteners moved to its new office with a more spacious and comfor table workplace. In addition to increasing the office space, President Chen also set up a quality control room for achieving a higher quality control level of its products.

by Naiwen Chang, Fastener World

Targeting America as its major market, Sun Chen Fasteners can provide customers with various products in low-volume batches. However, as many customers told President Chen that the packaging materials of a few of the goods previously delivered to them by long-haul air cargo appeared the issue of breakage (some even resulting in damage to the merchandise), Sun Chen Fastener then took the opportunity this time to introduce new packaging machines and reinforce the materials it uses to package its products. Valuing customers’ demands and focusing on more careful service are why Sun Chen Fasteners has won the deep trust from its customers.

A Trader That Can Solve Any Problem with Many Good Ideas

020

When it comes to Sun Chen Fasteners, one will always think of its ability to make special drawings into a reality and high flexibility. “We are like a company that can do anything. We always see our customers contact us with their inquiries and leave with our satisfying solutions,” President Chen said. He added, “One of our customers from the U.S. once contacted us for purchasing stainless steel caps, however, manufacturing such a product would inevitably cause lines or abrasion on its surface. In order to solve this problem, we then recommended this customer to use PE films featuring high viscosity, and he was quite satisfied with the final result.” Facing the demands for so many different parts, President Chen also noted, “Other than hardware and fasteners, we have recently seen more new product demands from our existing customers, which is quite interesting. For example, some of our existing U.S. customers sent us their inquiries for a variety of sports facilities, including audience chairs, basketball rims, park benches, or even impact-resistant foams. As we do not set any limit on which product order to accept and our customers fully trust us, they come to us for help when they need other products.”

Being Deeply Connected to the Suppliers Network and Valuing What Customers Need Having dedicating itself to Taiwanese manufacturing for 26 years, Sun Chen Fasteners is deeply connected to a huge suppliers network, which is why Sun Chen Fasteners is able to accept any type of order without difficulties. The team of Sun Chen Fasteners will always go to partnered factories to check the manufacturing status, as a result, when any customer submits his complaint, they can quickly analyze what the cause is from an objective standpoint. President said, “We once received a customer’s complaint, and after our times of analyses and research, the customer then made his apology and compensated us for our loss. Before shipments, we will go to our partnered factories to conduct random inspection of products and packages. Products will be shipped only after we give an “okay” and our team will help solve customers’ quality issues as quickly as they can. Sun Chen Fasteners offers information transparent to its customers, does whatever it can to satisfy customers’ demands, develops new products, keeps an eye on suppliers’ capabilities, and collaborates with the most suitable factories to quote.

New Office Building of ATOLI Machinery Co., Ltd. Serving Direct Clients with High Quality Riveting Machines ATOLI started off with hardware sales 40 years ago. When General Manager Hong KunMing took the helm of the family business, he embarked on developing riveting machines and magnetic drilling machines. Today, ATOLI has become an international riveting machine manufacturer with collaborative distributors from India, the Middle East, Thailand, Vietnam, Japan, South Korea, and South America. Just 3 years ago, Hong invested NTD 200 million in building the new ATOLI Machinery office which stands as a new milestone of his business empire. Additionally, he has a service branch in China providing products to Taiwanese clients working in China as well as a bunch of local clients.

Instant Technical Support for Global Direct Clients “In recent years, we found more and more direct clients reaching to us online from all over the world for product inquiry. To serve them directly, we will launch a new office building after this October which will recruit more sales and customer service staff, ” said Mr. Hong. In this way, global clients will be able to gain direct online access to ATOLI and save more time besides contacting their local distributors for product information and technical support. Hong expects this new office will increase the ATOLI brand’s public awareness and market share, providing global buyers with complete after-sale service.

ATOLI ships over 300 riveting machines every year. Each is infused with the spirit of German craftsmanship and can endure for decades. ATOLI has even gone highend, supplying riveting machines to the automotive, bike, hand tool, aerospace, medical and military industries.

Contact person: Amy Hong E-mail: sales@atoli.com

ATOLI has 3 latest innovative technologies. The first is the patented and customizable multi-axle and multi-point riveting technology. When applied to bikes, the technology can simultaneously do 5 to 10 rivets on a chainwheel, saving a whopping amount of cost on time and labor. The second is a mountable sensor on ATOLI riveting machines which can cope with both soft and hard rivets. The sensor will know when the machine has riveted to the specified position, and then lift the punch to prevent producing defective products. The third is a patented sensor capable of detecting the amount of pressure to ensure smaller tolerance on the riveting position as well as adequate tightness and to eliminate loosening, thereby saving the cost of quality control.

Improving Clients’ Profitability ATOLI can provide product drawings and all products are provided in standard specifications’ so that global clients can easily obtain components and replace by themselves, saving much maintenance cost. “Our products perform exceptionally well. They solve clients’ problems with processing and manufacturing, improve capacity, reduce labor cost and therefore increase clients’ profitability and ATOLI’s sales. The gains and growth are bilateral. The ATOLI brand gains reputation by word of mouth, so it naturally deserves recognition for its service and quality.”

Protective Measures and Investigations Carbon and Alloy Steel Threaded Rod from China, India, and Taiwan Injures U.S. Industry, Says USITC 美國國貿委員會認定中國、印度及台灣進口碳鋼/合金鋼牙條對美產業造成損害 The United States International Trade Commission (USITC) determined that a U.S. industry is materially injured by reason of imports of carbon and alloy steel threaded rod from China, India and Taiwan that the U.S. Department of Commerce (Commerce) has determined are subsidized or sold in the United States at less than fair value. Chairman David S. Johanson and Commissioners Rhonda K. Schmidtlein, Jason E. Kearns, Randolph J. Stayin, and Amy A. Karpel voted in the affirmative. As a result of the Commission’s affirmative determinations, Commerce will issue antidumping and countervailing duty orders on imports of carbon and alloy steel threaded rod from China and India and will issue an anti-dumping duty order on imports of this product from Taiwan.

Hardware World News >> Portable Torque Testing Device by Wiha Receives German Design Award 2020 德國Wiha可攜式扭力測試裝置獲頒2020德國設計獎 No more surprises after calibration – a decisive advantage for professionals who regularly work with Wiha torque screwdrivers and use the Wiha Torque QuickCheck, the German Design Award Winner 2020. The German Design Award is one of the world's most respected design competitions and imposes exacting standards when it comes to selecting its award winners. This year's winner from Wiha outperformed the competition due to its design quality and was selected as the winner in its Excellent Product Design - Workshop and Tools category during a jury session lasting two days. The practical, portable Torque QuickCheck allows users to perform a quick, easy check on a daily basis to ensure that Wiha torque screwdrivers function precisely. This guarantees safe and controlled work and helps businesses to save time and money by avoiding warranty claims and eliminating the need for reworking. Operation is extremely simple: users insert their Wiha torque screwdriver into the Torque QuickCheck together with the enclosed adapter blades and check the torque tool at 2.8 Nm. The LED light then clearly indicates the result using traffic light colours. Thanks to its compact, handy shape, the Torque QuickCheck is the ideal companion when out on jobs. It prevents any inaccuracies in screw fastenings before the nextContinues calibration, which be performed after WÜRTH Group tomust Grow 5,000 operations or after one year at the latest.

The Wiha Torque QuickCheck sees itself as a rapid testing device, guide and auxiliary component to ensure greater safety in torque fastenings. It should be noted that Wiha's quick test device cannot replace the need for documented calibration. However, it does mean that the user will no longer doubt that the torque tool is still operating within tolerances on a daily basis.

Sales developed in an unusually heterogeneous way in 2019. The different development of both the individual regions and individual business units of the Group reflects this. In Germany, sales growth was rather modest, at a rate of 2.1 percent. This is above all due to the struggling automotive industry. The development of business units such as the Würth Elektronik Group or manufacturing and tool trading companies, all serving to customers in this industry, was affected as a result. These units reported declining sales in 2019. Contrary to that, Adolf Würth GmbH & Co. KG, parent company of the Würth Group and German sales organization of the Würth Line, was able to report growth of 5.8 percent. The Group achieved sales growth of 6.8 % outside of Germany. Satisfactory growth rates were achieved in Southern Europe (15.3 percent; 4.9 percent if adjusted for acquisitions), South America (8.0 percent) and Eastern Europe (6.6 percent). The Electrical Wholesale companies even grew at double-digit rates, in part thanks to the acquisition of Grupo Electro Stocks S.L.U., a leading Spanish electrical wholesaler, in 2019. E-business sales experienced above-average growth and amounted to EUR 2.6 billion in 2019, thus increasing their share in overall Group sales to 18.3 percent.

Market Development 25.769 Million Cars Sold in China, Down 8.2% 2019年中國售出2576.9萬輛汽車、下滑8.2% China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) published the car sales statistics for 2019. The country produced 25.721 million cars, down 7.5%, and sold 25.769 million cars, down 8.2% from 2018, hitting an 18-month new low for the world's largest car market. With an enormous domestic demand, the Chinese automotive market quickly rose as the world's largest automotive market, but as the market waned, so did the car sales which returned to a normal level and then in 2018 were met with the first negative growth in 28 years. In 2019 there were the transformation and upgrade of the Chinese automotive industry, the U.S./China trade war, the transition to new environmental regulations and a large cut on subsidies for new energy cars that seriously impacted the overall market performance.

To p r og r a m t h e O n Ro b o t Screwdriver, users only need to enter the screw length and torque value. It then automatically calculates the force and speed with which to drive in the screw. It detects screws for incorrect lengths to reduce waste and improve production quality. Its unique "z-axis" provides effective protection, and reduces parts collision during robotic arm movement. Screws up to 35mm long are retracted completely inside the screwdriver when moving, enhancing its collaborative capabilities. The Screwdriver can handle a wide range of screw sizes and lengths, from M1.6 to M6, and up to 50mm long. The screwdriver can be quickly changed over to different screws in minutes, which reduces downtime and improves productivity.

Industry Focus >> Japan’s Car Production and Sales Statistics Based on the statistics of "Marklines website", Japanese car manufacturers produced 9,215,476 units of cars in 2019, exported 4,600,911 units of cars (equivalent to 49.9% of the total production in the same year), and sold 4,614,565 units of cars domestically. Japanese car manufacturing declined 0.2% in comparison with the record in 2018, however, its export grew 0.6% in the same period.

The Analysis of

Japan's Car Production and Sales in 2019 日本2019車輛生產銷售概況 by Sharareh Shahidi Hamedani

Mazda: The title of the 2nd biggest car producer has been a lter nately t a ken by Ma zda, Daihatsu, Suzuki and Honda for years. In 2019, this place was occupied by Mazda with 1,010,275 units of cars being produced. Mazda allocated 11% of the whole car production in Japan and exported 84.1% of it in 2019. The domestic sales of Mazda in 2019 in Japan were 160,431 units of cars (the 2nd lowest record among the 8 major Japanese car manufacturers; the 1st lowest was Subaru selling only 113,187 units domestically). The numbers of Mazda grew between 2018-2019. In production, its growth was about 1.4% and its growth in car export was 2.4%. Why can’t Mazda remain stable as the 2nd biggest car manufacturer in Japan? The answer is in Mazda's complicated journey from premium, which means when Mazda entered the premium car market, business gets harder for it, as it has to compete with stronger brands like Volvo, Benz, etc.

Hardware & Fastener Components - no.50/2020

Going upscale is not an easy proposition for an automaker standing for value. Mazda argues that as a small brand, it's better off finding a niche that commands better margins. What Mazda forgot is that marketing is a competitive sport. What Mazda can or cannot do depends primarily on its competition, not on its competence. Jessica Caldwell, executive director of industry analyses at Edmunds told about Mazda, “ I think their cars are great,". He continued "Everyone that drives them loves them in terms of the way they perform, the interior; they get really high marks." But whether they can command higher prices is a different matter. Sure, Mazda can make “premium” vehicles, but how in the world is the company going to communicate that position in the face of overwhelming competition?

Toyota: Toyota is t he f i rst Japa nese ca r producer and the biggest in the world. It produced 3,415,864 units of cars in 2019 and around 61.6% of its production (2,103,639 units) were exported. 37.1% of cars produced in Japan are from Toyota. In 2019, Toyota’s production improved by 8.8% and statistics show that the growth of its car export in 2019 grew 11.3% in comparison with 2018. Why has Toyota been so successful for several years? Toyota’s ability is to build brands, and this is its key to success. It has 3 leading brands in 3 different categories in the minds of prospects. • Toyota standing for reliability,

064

• Lexus for luxury.

• Prius for hybrid,

Daihatsu: T he 3rd biggest ca r producer in Japan is Daihatsu. It produced 953,541 units of cars in Japan in 2019, representing 10.3% of the whole car production in Japan. However, it did not export any cars to the world in the same year. The production of Daihatsu in 2019 grew 2.4% in comparison with 2018. Under a joint strategy, Toyota and Daihatsu intend to combine their bases of operations in addition to sharing their respective areas of proficiency and technical expertise. This will leverage the advantages of both brands, allowing the development of attractive products that are competitive on a global basis in the small cars sectors . Bad names kill a good strategy, and this is the main reason that Daihatsu doesn’t have any export. After joining Toyota in 2016, its export was 0 yet. For global success, an easy pronounced name in English is vital. Laura Ries one of the marketing – branding guru in the world says that “Building a brand is like picking up a girl in a bar. To be successful you have to have a little mystery and intrigue. You have to stand apart from the crowd. You have to be authentic. You have to have credentials. And you have to have a good name”. Daihatsu doesn’t work for Toyota and Daihatsu.

Suzuki: The 4th biggest car producer in Japan is Suzuki. It shared 10.3% of the whole car production in Japan. In 2019, it produced 946,768 units (about 6,773 units of cars less than that of Daihatsu). Suzuki exported 178,792 units in the same year (about 18.9% of its production). Its production reduced by 6.6% in comparison with 2016 and its global market became 7.8% smaller in the same period. The numbers of Suzuki fell down due to the lower output in Japan as it improved its inspection systems - Suzuki plans to recall around 2 million vehicles in Japan after admitting that it cheated on safety tests, filed false fuel-efficiency reports, and failed to conduct proper inspections. It is hard to recover from a major mistake. The 2nd reason is falling demand in India- its biggest market. India is a key market for Suzuki, which accounts for roughly half the passenger vehicles sold in India through a majority of stakes in the country's largest automaker, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd.

Industry Focus >>

Honda: Honda as the 5th biggest car producer in Japan shared 9.1% of the total car production in Japan. It produced 843,056 units of cars in 2019 and 15.6% of its cars produced were sold abroad, which means it exported 131,322 units of cars in the same year. The production of Honda in 2019 became 5.4% smaller in comparison with 2018 and its export dropped sharply (25.7%) in the same period. How does Honda become a global brand, even though in Japan it is only the 5th largest brand? The answer is in the U.S. market. Honda is a leading Japanese car manufacturer in the U.S., but is only the fifth in Japan. I n Ja p a n , p e o ple p e r c e ive Ho n d a a s a manufacturer of motorcycles, thus Japanese buyers seldom buy Honda cars. Yet, many executives fail to realize this important point. In the face of sinking sales Honda spent millions of USD to upgrade its cars in an attempt to meet what it thinks is consumer expectations – when in fact, what the company needs to do is to tweak people’s perceptions! (If the quality of cars is the most important thing, it should have the same position in all markets.)

Nissan: Nissan is also more famous outside of Japan than it is inside of Japan. It is the 6th biggest car manufacturer in Japan. Its production was 807,744 units of cars in 2019, representing 8.8% of the whole car production in Japan. 56.6% of its production (456,225 units of cars) were for export. The same as Honda, it also lost its global market by 9.5% and its production declined 13.2%. Nissan is a brand for everyone. What's the market for Nissan vehicles? A brand that includes sedans, sports cars, SUVs, vans, minivans, trucks and commercial vehicles. And, of course, electric cars. That's a typical thinking in the car manufacturing industry and so competition is very serious. Nissan couldn’t play well in this game and it settled in the 6th place among the 8 major car manufacturers. It wants to sell its cars by this message "Innovation that excites.". What does a car buyer want his/her car to be? Normally, a car buyer wants to buy a car he/she thinks meets the following requirements, • Is it reliable? • How is driving with it? • Does it have a suitable guarantee? • Is it chic?

• Is its size suitable for my family?

Now, let's see why you should buy a Nissan? Because it is innovative!!! On the other hand, why should you buy a Toyota? Because it is reliable, so this message makes sense in the minds of buyers.

Mitsubishi and Subaru: Mitsubishi was ranked the 7th and Subaru was ranked the 8th biggest car producers in Japan. Each of the brands shared 6.7% of the whole car production in Japan. Mitsubishi produced 619,464 units of cars and Subaru produced 618,764 units of cars (700 units less than the record of Mitsubishi). Mitsubishi exported 375,512 units of cars (representing 60.6% of its production), however, Subaru sold 505,577 units of cars outside of Japan (representing 81.7% of its production). Comparing the numbers of these two brands in the same period of 2018, it reveals that the export of Mitsubishi in 2019 was 15.7% lower than its export in 2018, and it lost 8.4% of its production in comparison with 2018. On the other hand, in the same period Subaru’s export got 5.1% smaller and its production decreased by 6.2%.

The coronavirus pandemic is having a big impact on the automotive manufacturing industry. The head of a Japanese lobby group said on 19th March 2020 that the group’s members will need to keep adjusting production, amid a projected slump in demand . Therefore, car production in Japan is expected to reach 680,000 units per month by the end of the 2nd quarter of 2020, according to Trading Economics global macro models and analysts’ expectations. Looking forward, they estimate that car production in Japan will stand at 650,000 units per month. In the long-term, Japan’s car production is projected to trend around 690,000 units per month in 2021, according to their econometric models. Five Minutes Before Twelve Motto: “Only when the last tree falls, the last river will be poisoned, the last fish caught, will we understand that the money cannot be eaten.” Divination of the Cree Indian tribe

by Jozef Dominik

About

The number of cases of coronavirus infection particularly in Europe exceeded 1.5 million. The “old continent” is thus one of the most affected in the world. Situation in the 6 countries of Europe and in TW, RU and USA is shown in Fig. 2 (source: WORLDOMETER, expressed in the number of infected population in %, which is the only objective comparison).

Consequences

Source: Worldometer 5M Total Coronavirus Cases

Today's topic - coronavirus, whether we admit it or not, is currently a serious societal phenomenon. The ultimate extent and the consequences of the crisis are not yet foreseeable. The facts change daily. The total situation in the world as the end of May 2020 is shown in Fig. 1. It needs no comment. Alarming is not only the extent, but especially the increasing tendency to spread the pandemic.

The corona pandemic has a firm grip on social and economic life in the world. The ultimate extent and consequences of the crisis are currently not foreseeable. One of the biggest risks at this time is uncertainty.

Most car manufacturers had to stop production for a short time (KIA Slovakia for example) due to a lack of assembly parts imported from abroad. VW also had to temporarily stop its stores in Europe (ES, SK, CZ) for fear of a pandemic. The carmaker Peugeot (SK) also stopped working and sent employees home with a salary of 65% of the original salary. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles reported a net loss of 1.69 billion euros for the first three months of the year. In the same period last year, the company recorded a profit of 508 million euros. Of course, such a situation also has a negative impact on manufacturers and suppliers of fasteners. Agrati, IT, one of the most important manufacturers of screws for the automotive industry decided the lockdown of the operations, due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 emergency. Machinery production switched to the so-called “Kurzarbeit” (short-time work). “The construction industry is facing the most difficult times," says Prof. Norbert Gebbeken, President of the Bavarian Chamber of Engineers. “Construction projects are naturally designed to be long-term, so that many offices are still working on projects that started before the Corona crisis. We are very concerned that there won't be new orders soon." All this had to have a negative effect on the overall economic situation of individual countries. However, it is not just an economic consequence.

Fig. 1. Number of COVID-19 case 0.6 EU Number of infected population in %

Pleasing it is that thanks to effective measures consisting of rigorous protection already in place to keep the pandemic at a bridle. “The countries of Central and Eastern Europe reacted before the epidemic began. Slovakia for example acted very, very quickly," the Financial Times quoted Professor Martin McKee from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Similarly Taiwan has made a rapid action. The government locked up the airport. Inevitably, however, this has a negative effect on economic activity and that kills some of the trade between manufacturers and overseas companies. That results in forcing some companies to lose revenues and making a portion of employees lose income.

As says Prof. MUDr. Eva Rozborilová, “... although the corona will pass away like any viral disease in the past, we will continue to die of oncological, metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. All these diseases are associated with climate, diet and life style. Humanity will slow down, and maybe it's the purpose of the flu, no matter who triggered the virus. We need to really think about how our grandchildren and their grandchildren will live”. And the world-famous traveler and film director Pavol Barabáš, laureate of more than 250 international awards for film shots of the planet Earth, summed it up in one sentence: "We have pushed aside the harmonious relations between civilization and nature as an obstacle to economic growth". And what does the author say? “We have degraded nature to the position of a slave”.

Industry Focus >> Hard times have come for all areas of life, including trade fair and symposiums organizers. Due to the spread of the new corona virus, numerous trade fairs and other major events had to be canceled or postponed this year. For example Fastener Fairs USA, France and India 2020 was postponed due to the COVID-19 virus. Digital offers will not replace real trade fairs, they will complement them only. The pandemic has wiped out almost a third of global oil demand through lockdowns and travel bans, landing a direct hit on a sector already in the grip of its own crisis. The situation is all the more complicated because there is still no effective vaccine and the origin of the virus is not clearly known. There are only assumptions and conspiracy theories: Table. 1. Human pollution

It is not within the competence of this article to draw conclusions in every case, but it is clear that nature cannot be plundered indefinitely. In the end, it always triumphs over human stupidity. Nature cannot be bound with impunity as a criminal (Fig. 3) or endlessly looted.

No comment. What is actually happening to our mother Earth as a result of economic activity (See Senkey diagram below in Fig. 4) As seen, a person's economic activity is a hand in hand associated with induced production harmful substances. The higher the desire for wealth and prosperity, the greater the risk of devastation. These are mainly the development of motoring, aviation and energy and the associated CO2 emissions, which, in addition to steam, methane NH4 and N2O, are primarily responsible for the greenhouse effect. Carbon dioxide is normally at least as important to life on Earth as water. Understandably, this means the natural metabolism between flora and fauna, which takes place through photosynthesis, the most important process on Earth in terms of life. Chemically it can be expressed as follows:

It can be said that there is a balance between O2 and CO2 in nature. The one who disturbs the balance is human economic activity.

This table clearly documents the dependence of material losses on the aggressiveness of the environment. Even a well-known expert Prof. Peter Jost in his colossal work The Jost Report said that corrosion, friction and wear cost the world astronomic sums of money every year. Unfortunately, even the largest authorities in the field of climatology could not convince. And neither did Günter Verheugen, a former European Commissioner for Industry, who said: "I firmly believe that politicians should create the conditions to make environmental protection attractive to businesses." Until “Mr. COVID 19” had to come to convince.

Conclusion “Five Minutes Before Twelve” is the title of this post which indicates the severity of the current pandemic situation. Maybe it's a little far-fetched, but in any case, the coronavirus is a warning to humanity. Thanks to extensive preventive measures and an effective vaccine, we will certainly manage the pandemic, but that is only the solution to the consequence. Wouldn't it be better to address the cause?

Environment Situation in 2020 (source: worldometer) This year - 2020

It has been stated countless times on various forums what enormous material damage is caused by corrosion. In particular, steel structures and especially screw connections are sensitive to the aggressiveness of the external environment (Fig. 5 and Table 3). Although it is not possible exactly to prove that anti-virus measures have helped not only living but also inanimate nature, it can legitimately be assumed that they are equally beneficial.

Nature can take cruel revenge. This has been the case in the past and is probably t he case now. L et's look at t he cu r rent environmental situation and its changes this year (Table 1).

The coronavirus therefore helped nature. Of course, not directly, but thanks to the measures taken. Those measures were taken by the mankind and nature immediately repaid them. Isn't this a clear signal to get rid of this mess? Nature literally provides us with instructions.

Paradoxically, the coronavirus helps nature. According to various world agency reports, the measures taken against this latest plague of humanity have caused an improvement in the atmosphere, the return of animal species, including freshwater and marine species, to places where they have long since disappeared.

Car Production and Sales of

South Korea in 2019 by Behrooz Lotfian

2019南韓汽車產銷分析

Car Production of South Korea The automobile industry of South Korea is now the fifth largest producer of passenger cars in the world. Its automobile industry accounts for 13 percent of South Korea’s manufacturing output and is a very important industrial area that contributes to about 12 percent of the total employment in South Korea. It is a core industry that affects all industrial sectors, from materials (such as steel, nonferrous metals and glass) to transportation, advertising, financial services, and construction. For decades, the automobile industry has grown exponentially and has also been an indicator of the country's economic growth (https://www. statista.com/topics/5249/automotive-industry-in-south-korea/). The car production in South Korea decreased to 3,950,581 units in 2019 from 4,028,705 units in 2018. Table 1. Kia and Hyundai are the main car makers in South Korea, representing 81.9% of the whole production in South Korea, and as a result of Kia’s bankruptcy in 2007, Hyundai now owns a part of the company. It means that Hyundai is the monopoly producer in South Korean market and Kia is the 2nd brand of Hyundai. Hence, this is the reason that many of the comparable models of these two car makers share the exact same body structures, although Kia does still operate independently and has separate design workshops, marketing, and branding.

As mentioned above, Kia and Hyundai have the same parent company, but they offer completely different line-ups. While Hyundai’s cars and SUVs focus on how much bang you can get for your buck, Kia’s diverse line-ups include low-cost models that are sold alongside high-priced models that can cost nearly $50,000 in their highest grade. This head-to-head battle features each of the company’s offerings in our segmented vehicle categories (https://cars. usnews.com/cars-trucks/kia-vs-hyundaibattle-of-the-brands). Car production in South Korea was expected to reach 4,250,000 units by the end of 2020, according to Trading Economics global macro models and analysts’ expectations. In the long-term, the South Korea’s car production is projected to trend around 4,250,000 units in 2021, according to their econometric models. (See the left graph)

Industry Focus >> 82.3% of South Korean cars sold domestically were manufactured by these two brands and both of them export more than 80% of their production to the world (Hyundai: 83.2%, Kia: 81.2%). Hyundai-Kia's combined sales in 2019 slipped by 5.1 percent (from 7.4 million units in 2018 to 7.19 million units in 2019). The sales of South Korean car brands in 2019 reveal that the automobile industry in Korea was not as good as in 2018.

The numbers of both Hyundai and Kia decreased in the export sector. Hyundai was down 4.8% and Kia was down 1.3% compared to the overseas sales in 2018. The domestic sales of Hyundai increased by 2.9%, but Kia appeared a decline of 2.2% in this sector.

Brands

Industry Focus >> Why is South Korean Car Industry Under Pressure? Some fundamental factors that happened over the past years and the Covid-19 pandemic have shown the fact that the stability of South Korean car industry is fragile. These items are:

1- Weak Name: Name is one of the main factors that may lead to the success or failure of a brand in the global market. Different countries, different languages, and so, some names can sound good in one language and vice versa. Therefore, brands should find names that can be easily spelled in English and have no bad meanings. However, brands should double check their names in the destination market. Korean brands’ names won’t work globally because their pronunciation is difficult to be spelled in English (Like Japanese and Chinese). Why English? Because English is the communication language of world business.

2- Different Regions, Different Strategies Hyundai and Kia have earned different views on their car models in different countries. For example, in most Middle East countries Kia and Hyundai are considered luxury brands by consumers because they are not rich enough to buy Benz, BMW, or Porsche, but in other countries like Europe and USA, Huyndai and Kia are on the contrary considered inexpensive brands. These two brands have different positions in different countries, which helped them sell their cars in each region, but damage their brand images (that is, is Hyundai or Kia an expensive or inexpensive car brand?).

3- Weak Visual Position Hyundai’s trademark is similar to Honda’s trademark. Both are just stylized versions of the letter “H.” Kia has used one of the weakest ways for making its visual position: using logo type. Successful companies which use a logo type as their logo have visual identity (Visual hammer) beside of it. Customer recall the brands because of the visual identity, not logo type.

4- Line Extension: This is a problem for most car manufacturers. When Hyundai and Kia introduced their cheap cars in most of the regions, why did they introduce their luxury models? They cannot get a success in their luxury brands. Hyundai’s and Kia’s luxury cars only share about 3-4 percent of their sales.

Will the Future be Darker than Before for S. Korean Car Industry?

104

Based on the performance of Hyundai in 2020, the Covid-19 has fuelled the failure speed of South Korean car industry.

January 2020: January sales totalled 304,076 units, down 3.6% in comparison with January 2019. Sales in South Korea declined 21% year on year to 47,591 units due to fewer work days. Sales outside of South Korea slightly rose to 256,485 units vs. 254,954 units in the same period of 2019.

February 2020: February sales totalled 275,044 units, down 13% in comparison with February 2019. Sales in South Korea declined 26% year on year to 39,290 units. Sales outside of Korea declined to 235,754 units vs. 262,414 units in the same period of 2019.

March 2020: March sales totalled 308,503 units, down 20.9 percent in comparison with March 2019. Sales in South Korea increased 3 percent year on year to 72,180 units. Sales outside of Korea declined 26.2 percent year on year to 236,323 units.

May 2020: April sales totalled 159,079 units, down 56.9% in comparison with May 2019. Sales in South Korea slid by 0.5% year on year to 71,042 units. Sales outside of Korea declined 70.4% year on year to 88,037 units.

What is the Plan of South Korea? T he Sout h Korea n gover n ment has p r e s e n t e d a “ f u t u r e ve h icle i n d u st r y development strategy” with a target of making South Korea the world’s most competitive presence in the future automobile industry by 2030. The plan is focused on pushing the accelerator in innovation growth in the area of future vehicles, including commercializing completely autonomous vehicles by 2027 and increasing the percentage of eco-friendly vehicles to 33% of all new cars sold in South Korea by 2030. The problem is in the core of the car industry in South Korea and their managers are looking to the solution in the technical and engineering section!! In most countries, Hyundai and Kia are successful because these two brands deliver a lot of value for a little money. However, this strategy put them in the horrible situation in a crisis period, like now. As the production cost of vehicles in South Korea continues to increase, Hyundai and Kia in the long term will have to raise its prices, which will make the brands less competitive in the marketplace. Nowadays, their low-end market is attacked by Chinese cars, and Covid-19 disrupted many plans, and the managers think to solve their problems through engineering and technology!! They are on the wrong way again!! Because of their multi-brand image, they don’t have a stable global position, and therefore, improving the technical parts (that is, focusing on engineering) before unifying their brand images will be a waste of money and time. The best way for these two brands is repositioning, they are considered inexpensive cars in the developed countries, and on the other hand, they are also considered luxury brands in the developing countries. Their main sales are in developed countries, so they should change their position from a “luxury” to an “ordinary” brand in the developing countries by reducing their car options. Saving money helps them survive during the Covid-19 pandemic and helps them compete with Chinese cars by focusing on "Made in South Korea” which is usually deemed as being more reliable than those “Made in China.”

Industry Focus >> Future of the Hand Tools Market in South Africa The size of the global hand tools market in 2019 was about 16 billion USD and South Africa shared 0.4% (export + import) of it. Based on the statistics, this market is very likely to get 4% bigger by 2029. If South Africa wants to play a more effective role in this market, it should focus on general-purpose tools, because DIY activities are increasing in the world, and so is the number of customers demanding lightweight and durable hand tools. Online sales can be the best market (area) for South African fastener producers where they can be successful, followed by retail sales, owing to consumers’ increasing preference for online shopping rather than purchasing from retail and speciality stores. Although I suggest South African suppliers should go to the Internet for selling their hand tools, this transformation has some vital rules. In the real market (physical market) people like to buy from the leader of that market but the 2nd and 3rd players also have chance to sell their products. For example, Germany is the leader of high-tech fasteners in the world, but buyers also pay attention to Italian and American fasteners as high tech fasteners, too. In the virtual world (online market) people just trust the leader. Alibaba is the most famous B2B trading platform, and how many of buyers knows the name of the 2nd active website in B2B trading? If South African wants to be successful in the online business, they should make something different in comparison with Alibaba, for example, they introduce themselves as home kit hand tool producers, DIY kit producers ,...

The Internet will demolish all barriers, boundaries, and borders. All web-based businesses can be global businesses, and so China, Germany, the U.S. as main players in this market will not allow South Africa to play easily. As a result, South Africa shouldn’t try to include too many different hand tool types under a single brand. Stay focused and keep the original brand, instead of launching a new brand. South African hand tools players can improve their product hand-outs by investing in research and development activities and offering innovative hand tools. For this aspect making joint venture contracts with European and American manufacturers can be helpful.

Factors Shaping the Hand Tools Market Ergonomic Design of Hand Tools Major players in the hand tools market are focusing on ergonomic design elements of hand tools to make them precise and comfortable to operate.

Multi-featured Hand Tools for Various Applications The hand tools market is mainly growing due to multi-pu r pose featu res of ha nd tools such as reduced tool kit size, weight and maintenance, and growing preference for many-in-one tools for multiple applications across various industries.

Increasing DIY Activities

106

Increasing consumer inclination towards leisure and recreational activities along with rising disposable incomes of people across the globe is leading to growing uptake of DIY activities. Moreover, rapid growth of the automobile industry has created an impact on consumers to perform DIY activities on their own vehicles for temporary maintenance and repair purpose owing to rise in expensive repairs and maintenance of automobiles, primarily for four wheelers. This provides tremendous potential for manufacturers of hand tools to introduce new and innovative products in the market, in order to compete with the innovation and ease of power tools. Statistics show that, household & DIY segment accounted for 5.9 billion USD in the global hand tools market in 2015 and is estimated to increase to 9 billion USD by the end of 2027.

Last Word The hand tools market is a highly fragmented landscape, wherein main players grasp a majority of revenue shares. South Africa should compete with the U.S., Germany, China, and India. The weak point of the competitors is that they are expanding their product listings yearly and South Africa should focus on one tool and then get professional on it (i.e., move to the side opposite to their competitors). Key focusing and branding in the hand tools market are aiming for market penetration in North America and Western European regions, where most of the people carry their own hand tool kits. Therefore, if South Africa wants to be successful in the hand tools business, it must create a need in customers’ minds with innovative home kit tools.

How Cold Headed Parts are Made The Operations and the Tools Used to Do It 冷鍛頭零件製造概論—相關程序及使用工具 I was twenty years old and taking a tour for the first time of the cold heading factory that would become my world for the next twentysix years. I was enthralled by the activity going on all around me, the noise, the vibration, the smoke in the air, and the parts flying out of the headers like popcorn out of a popcorn popper. I vividly remember walking through the thread rolling department and simply being amazed at the thread rolling process- I had never imagined that you could put a thread onto a screw that way.

This article is dedicated to those individuals that have always been curious but unable to really learn how coiled wire goes into the machine on one end and comes out the other the size and shape of a nearly finished screw, bolt, or nut. This article will look at the basics of what operations we do in a cold header, the basics of how the machine works, and the tools we use to pull it all off. I am hopeful that this will be a simple enough explanation that it will help those who have always wondered how a screw, bolt, or nut is made to fill the gaps in their knowledge and really come to appreciate the engineering marvel in cold heading fasteners.

What Can We Do in Cold Heading? How would you answer the question, “What is Cold Heading?” I often ask that in the training sessions that I do and, of course, there is always one engineer in the crowd that starts to describe it something like this, “it’s a high speed adiabatic forming process where…”. Although they may have a truly brilliant engineering definition, when I ask the question I am simply trying to tease out a simple explanation like we “we hit a piece of metal really hard so that it starts to take the shape defined by the tools…” And in reality, that explanation is pretty much right on target and can be understood by just about anyone. As a metaphor, consider the child’s game of playing with Playdough. Many of us may recall hours of fun spent by us or our children modelling creations from this soft clay-like material. Often the Playdough set came with a device like a garlic press that you loaded the Playdough into, pressed, and squeezed out “ropes” through a shaped hole (See Figure 1) or the set had little “molds” you could press the Playdough into to make new shapes and play items. By comparison, at its core the cold heading processes are not very different. Cold heading has a number of advantages over other manufacturing techniques that we could use to make fasteners. First and foremost,

Figure 1: Play Dough Being Extruded it is fast. That makes it more economical and considering the sheer number of fasteners consumed every year, more practical than any of the other competing manufacturing processes, which are all much slower. Unlike machining, it has very little or no waste and parts emerge from the process stronger than the raw material that went in. Clearly there are some real advantages to utilizing this process, but just what exactly can one do? Cold heading allows us to accomplish three different operations. We are able to upset, extrude, and trim or pierce parts. In fact, most parts will combine two or all three of these processes to complete the finished part. So what are these three processes?

Upsetting: Upsetting is pretty much what cold heading derives its name from. It is the process used to form a head on a screw or bolt. At its simplest, upsetting is a process which accumulates material into a localized area of the part, like the head or a collar. In other words, in the areas that we are upsetting the diameter is getting larger. In cold heading lingo, we talk about the “number of diameters” that we can upset. Although that might sound pretty complex, it is really a relatively simple idea. Consider the shape that every part starts in. It is simple a cylinder cut from the long, continuous coil of wire being fed into the machine. For externally threaded parts (those that will become screws and bolts), this cylinder is long compared to its diameter. It is possible, therefore, to break this cylinder up into sections where each individual section is equal in height and diameter (See Figure 2). Each of these sections is called a “diameter”. Again, with parts that are long and skinny (bolts and screws) each starting piece of wire will be comprised of multiple diameter sections. Engineers have learned over the years that you can only squeeze (or move) a limited amount of material at one time before it begins to crack or burst. In the cold heading world, the limitation is about 2 ¼ diameters per strike. Most screw or bolt heads have more than 2 ¼ diameters of material in them, so that they must be hit more than once to achieve the Figure 2: Pictorial desired end result. On most parts it Representation of takes at least two strikes, so that we the Term “Diameter” talk about a “first upset blow” and a

Hardware & Fastener Components - no.49/2020

Making fasteners, especially the cold heading part of the process is an exquisite and finely tuned dance that must all come together in just the right way for success. I would learn this after hundreds of hours invested with our header and roller operators working to make new, often very challenging parts go from our customer’s paper concept to three-dimensional reality. During this time with our manufacturing experts I would learn much about the process of finessing a part into production, how the process worked, and the tools that made it happen. Although my job required me to be a bridge between our production operations, the rest of our “office” staff, and our customer, so that I had to learn these things, I was surprised by the lack of others showing the same interest in learning how the product was made. I don’t think that has changed much and I must sadly say that it is highly likely we have many individuals in our industry that don’t really understand even the basics of how a part comes together.

take shape and the beginning of an internal hole or channel (See Figure 6). Reverse extrusion is also incorporated to form internal drive recesses in screw heads.

Figure 3: Example of a First and Finish Upset Blows

Extrusion: Extruding is a general term because relative to cold heading there are three distinctly different types of extruding processes. There are two forms of forward extrusion; Open and Trapped extrusion, where the material is being pushed out in front (or forward) of the tool. The third form of extrusion is Reverse Extrusion where the material is flowing backward against the direction that the tool is moving. Let’s consider each in a little greater detail.

Open Extrusion: Open extrusion gets its name from the Figure 4: fact t hat t he Example of majority of open Extrusion the part is not con fi ned by any of the tools before entering the part of the tool where the extrusion happens. This allows the extruding portion of the tool to be located near the top of the die which maximizes the length we can extrude the part. The downside is that it takes pressure to push the part through the extruding part of the tool. If we push too hard, since the part is not being supported much by the tools it will buckle resulting in a catastrophic failure of the process. Therefore, open extrusions are limited to reducing the area by no more than about 35% (See Figure 4).

Hardware & Fastener Components - no.49/2020

Trapped Extrusion:

108

Trapped extrusions are pretty much the complete opposite of an open extrusion because the part must be completely confined in the tool before it begins Figure 5: to get pushed through the Example of Trapped extruding part of the tool. Extrusion This confinement allows us to push much harder so that we ca n now reduce the diameter by about 75% (See Figure 5). The drawback is that much of the tool gets consumed in making room for the part before extruding so that the length of the extrusion is much shorter and more limited than what can be achieved in an open extrusion.

Reverse Extrusion: Reverse extrusion is the primary process used in forming hollow parts such as nuts or bushings. In this case a pin is pushed into the part which is confined inside the die. There is clearance between the outside diameter of the pin and the walls of the die allowing material to flow backwards up along the pin. The result is an outside form beginning to

Figure 6: Example of Reverse Extrusion The final operations that can be accomplished in cold heading are trimming and piercing. Not every part will be trimmed or pierced. In fact, the majority of externally threaded screws do not receive a trimming operation. Both trimming and piercing are shearing operations. The speed, force, and design of the tools simply shear the subject area away. For externally threaded parts, we trim and the operation is almost exclusively reserved for finishing a head or collar shape. Perhaps the most common of all trimming applications is creating a trimmed hex head. When internally threaded parts are made, most often reverse extrusion is occurring on both sides of the part. The blank, just prior to the last station, therefore, will have holes started but not going all the way through on both sides of the part. Separating the two holes is a thin web of material. The last operation in the sequence is, therefore, a piercing operation where a pin is thrust into the hole, shearing the web, and opening the hole continuously through the part. In both cases, whether it is an external part being trimmed or an internal part being pierced, there is a small amount of offal. This is the only scrap, however, that will be experienced in cold heading and is only a small percentage of the entire amount of material that constitutes the part. Cold heading, therefore, is not a high scrap generator.

How does the Cold Header Work? There are many different brands and designs of cold headers, so it is impossible to describe the way that one works and proclaim that this covers every possibility. However, most cold headers operate on similar principles, so that we can have a discussion here and it is likely to be relevant to many of the machines in a cold header’s shop. Cold headers are essentially horizontal mechanical presses that feed raw material into an entry point, cut a piece off, and then transfer that piece of raw material through a series of strikes (more commonly referred to as blows) before emerging out the other side of the machine as a finished blank. Cold headers are comprised of a stationary side that houses the “Dies” and a moving side that houses the “Punches” or “Hammers”. The machine comes together to strike the part in what is called a “blow”. Cold headers are defined by the number of blows that they provide. The simplest machines have one die but hit the part twice. More complicated headers can hit the part many times, although few commercial machines exceed more than six dies and blows.

Technology >>

As parts get geometrically more complicated, this simple forming routine will no longer be successful and requires a machine with more dies and more opportunities to hit the parts. These upgraded machine types include two-die-three-blow machines (where the part gets hit three times) to multi-die parts formers and nut formers which may have as many as six dies in a line and hit the part six times. (Theoretically you can have an infinite number of dies in a line, but practically most commercial cold heading machine manufacturers don’t produce machines beyond six dies.) The more you can strike the part, the more complicated or geometrically unique you can form parts.

What are the Basic Tools? I have already mentioned the two primary tools used to make part, Dies and Punches. Each machine however, has a complete set of tools that can range from perhaps several dozen pieces to six station parts formers with several hundred tools. Let’s look at the primary components:

Cut-off Tools: Every cold header has to have a way to measure out and cut-off a piece of the continuous wire coil. The method of getting wire into the cold header and actually cutting it off will vary from brand to brand. In the end though, once it gets into the machine, they all will have a cut-off knife which strikes the wire from a transverse direction shearing a piece off. This system is usually comprised of a number of parts besides just the cut-off knife.

Dies: Dies are larger than the punches because they must withstand greater loading. Dies are located on the stationary side of the cold header. Each die is actually an assembly of a few to many pieces. The working tool is usually made in segments so that there are three or four separate segments that make up the working part of the die. These are all pressed under great pressure into a much larger diameter cylindrical canister called the “casing”. The inserts (working part of the die) are under extreme radial pressure with each blow. If they did not have some form of support they would quickly burst and fail. For this reason they are pressed into the casing, which is much larger and able to absorb and disperse the forming pressure providing integrity to the die for many thousands of parts (cycles). In fact, die casings can be used multiple times before they need to be retired. All dies will have a hole central to the axis of the tool into which the part is pressed. Because of the extreme pressure being exerted on the parts, what prevents them from shooting right through the die and out the back of the machine? This is where the “knock-out pin” system comes in. There are a series of pins located at the rear of the die that perform two functions. First during the forming portion of the stroke, they prevent the part from being pushed out the back of the die. Secondly, at the end of the forming stroke, these pins are thrust forward pushing the part out of the die.

Punches: Punches are located on the moving side of the machine. The punches are smaller than the dies as they experience less pressure during the forming process. To prevent leaving the wrong impression, however, they, too, experience heavy loading and must also be contained inside punch casings. The punches usually define the shape of the head for screws where one punch will be the first blow and the second punch the final blow. They may also just support a pin that pushes the part into the die, especially in instances where the dies are facilitating open or trapped extrusions or recess pins that facilitate backward extrusion to form the drive recess in parts.

Transfer: The final tool/system that bears some discussion is the transfer mechanism. This is pretty simple on a one-die-twoblow machine, where the only transfer necessary is the sheared cut-off to the die. However, once you start stepping up to more and more dies in a multidie header, the transfer mechanism becomes an important component. The tooling piece of the transfer is usually just the “fingers” or the grips that actually grab and hold onto the parts as they move from one die to the other. These fingers are usually custom made for every part. Transferring parts is a real art, especially as part geometry begins to play a factor. As parts begin to get top heavy from the upset head and occasionally a large shoulder, gravity takes hold and they begin to want to droop as they come out of the die. The operator, therefore, has to get the transfer timed just right so that it grabs and holds the part before it fully exits the die but doesn’t begin to actually move the part until the part is fully clear of the die. It’s a well-timed “dance” that often requires hours of experience and practice by the set-up technician to really hone the skill.

Recent Innovation Like most things, cold heading machines are constantly being improved and getting better. Two tool related innovations that continue to evolve are: 1. Segmented Tooling: this is tooling that has been cut into segments and spring loaded so that the die can open up allowing parts with double collars or wasted shanks to be formed net shape and exit the die. It is impossible to form parts with this type of geometry in traditional tooling because they are unable to exit the die. There is significant interest in this innovation because it may allow the manufacturer to eliminate an expensive and time consuming secondary operation. Although quite interesting, this technology is not suited to everyday every cold header or every part. When employed the tooling is significantly complicated relative to traditional tooling and the expense of the tooling package rises dramatically. 2. Better Cut-offs: Much improvement has gone into the wire feeding and cut-off mechanisms of many machines providing wire cut-offs that are more square and tighter in tolerance. This is a real advantage because the more tightly controlled the volume is the better the end part. Additionally, the more square the ends the better condition the ends of the final part will be.

Conclusion: Cold Heading is a unique and exceptional manufacturing process. Few people who have ever just stood for the first time next to a header and marveled at how it runs really have an appreciation for all the variables and intricacies that go into the tooling, set-up, and machine timing to arrive at a successful finish. The next time you stand next to a header I hope you can now better appreciate what a finely tuned process it really is.

Hardware & Fastener Components - no.49/2020

Headers are classified or named by the number of dies they have and the number of blows they can inflict on the part. The simplest of machines is the one-die-two-blow (also known as a single-diedouble-stroke machine). This equipment has only one die but hits the part twice. For some that description may seem sort of counterintuitive. How can the machine only have one die but hit the part twice? In the simplest explanation, this means that the machine is designed so that the part gets struck by two separate punches while never moving out of the die. These machines are reserved for simple parts where almost all the work being done is to upset the head. The first blow creates an intermediate upset and the second (or final) blow completes the head. It is highly likely that little or nothing is actually happening in the die.

印度手工具產業市場及貿易分析

The Market and Trade Analysis of

ndian Hand Tools Industry by Shervin Shahidi Hamedani In recent years, as economic globalization speeds up, the hand tool industry has become one of the main sources in hardware tool manufacturers all over the world. Hand tools are products with good profits where competition of hand tool products is mainly decided by the quality of raw materials.

Hardware & Fastener Components - no.50/2020

The hand tools market has seen a substantial development throughout the past years, due to investment growth in construction, automotive, and some other end-user industries. The size of global hand tools market was about 22.2 billion US dollars in 2019, where Asia-pacific registered its highest revenue followed by LAMEA (Latin America, Middle East and Africa) and Europe. The global hand tools market is expected to reach 30.3 billion US dollars in next seven years with the growth rate of 4.1%.

110

Hand tools are widely used in several applications such as residential, industrial, and commercial. The durability feature of hand tools has made them extensively used in the industrial segment. As a result, in 2019 the largest market share of hand tool products was recorded in this segment compared with residential and commercial segments. In terms of the types of products, the major hand tools productions are wrenches, screwdrivers, hammers, cable cutters, and pliers. The highest market share belongs to wrench products which is supported by its high demand in both automotive and manufacturing industries. There has always been acute competition between adopting power tools and utilizing hand tools within industries. Although the growth of technologies and time efficiency requirements have made a competitive advantage for power tools, hand tools still have high demand in markets, mainly because of their durability at a lower cost. In general, the hand tools market is growing due to the multipurpose features such as reduced tool kit size, weight and maintenance, and growing preference for many-in-one tools for multiple applications across various industries.

The hand tools market in India is estimated to cross 200 million US dollars with the growth rate of 12% annually. The market landscape is fragmented wherein few key players grasp a significant of revenue shares. Tier 1 players in the market are continuously focusing on enhancing their product offerings by providing lightweight and handy tools, and customized tools according to consumer requirements. The key advantages of Indian manufacturers in this market compared with their global competitors are low labour cost and availability of raw materials. There are more than 2,500 manufacturers in India which a majority of them are in small scale sectors catering to the demand of local markets and export. New and emerging players in this market are improving their product offerings by expending in research and development activities and offering innovative hand tools and similar products. One example of their production advancements can be the introduction of hand tools with insulated layers to protect users from electric shock and handle grips for holding tools. With no doubt, an increase in urbanization in India has created the need for residential construction.

The growth of construction, more specifically residential construction, has fuelled the demand for hand tools market in India. Local manufacturers are increasing their customer base, locally and globally, by expanding their delivery channels, enhancing effective operations while developing their products portfolio in order to keep up with the demand growth.

Another key factor which impacts on hand tools market growth in India is an increase in the number of manufacturing plants and industries wherein hand tools are extensively used for maintenance purposes. A good example is the automotive repair and maintenance sector, which is known as one of the most lucrative industries for application of hand tools in India.

Industry Focus >>

Online sales are the most procured area for hand tools, followed by retail sales, due to increasing consumer preference for online shopping rather than purchasing from retail and speciality stores. Additionally, procurements and alliances with local market players are trending in the hand tools market in this country. On the other hand, power tools manufacturers, as the main competitors of hand tools players, are growing and expanding their businesses over India. The Southern region mainly contributes the largest revenue compared to the whole power tools market, supported by the existence of robust industrial sector in the region and the Western region shows its high growth rate as a result of the booming construction and industrial segments in the region.

Multiple industrial operations are being equipped with power tools to benefit from their cost-effectiveness, lesser labour-induced work and higher efficiency.

Furthermore, advancements in existing power tools are swiftly outpacing the upgrades done on conventional hand tools. In the long run, there is a possibility that hand tools might lose their applicability to power tools. This is where hand tools manufacturers need to bring in more innovations into their products, reduce further their pricing while maintaining a good quality of products. Moreover, the energy industry is evolving constantly, due to increased dependency on renewable power sources such as wind and solar energy. The building of new power generation units requires highcapacity power tools for the installation, assembly, and maintenance. In this case, the electric power tools could help this purpose by offering ease of use and high productivities. This factor is likely to strengthen the demand for electric power tools in the energy industry and this industry is where hand tools may not be able to compete with power tools and lose their market share. With growing automation & time-efficiency requirements, there is a possibility of radical shift from hand tools towards power tools in India. Over the past few years, power tools have gained acceptance across all major verticals including construction, industrial, and automotive. Therefore, in order to compete with this continuously growing demand for power tools in the country, it is recommended that hand tools manufacturers to come up with cost effective and innovative products to offer more applications to win the race with pricey application-specific power tools.

The Impact of Covid-19 on Taiwan Hand Tool Industry 新冠肺炎疫情對台灣手工具產業之影響分析 by Dr. Arthur Hsu, MIRDC

Hardware & Fastener Components - no.50/2020

Foreword

112

Since the outbreak of Covid-19 in the end of 2019 in China, the global confirmed cases as of July 2020 have reached over 16 million, costing lives of more than 0.65 million people. According to IMF, the global economy is estimated to shrink by over 4.9%. In addition, according to the statistics of Asian Development Bank, this pandemic may cost the global economy a loss of 8,800 billion USD. The pandemic has resulted in lockdown orders in over 80 cities in mainland China. China is the world’s largest hand tool exporter and lots of major Taiwanese hand tools manufacturers are headquartered in Taiwan. Under the influence of U.S.-China trade war and uncertainties caused by the pandemic, how can Taiwanese hand tools companies respond to the market reshuffling effect on the global market mainly caused by these two factors? This article will expound upon Taiwan hand tool industry, the analysis of how certain products have been impacted by the pandemic, and how can these hand tool companies adjust their operating strategy to face the post-pandemic global market.

Taiwan Hand Tool Industry Influenced by U.S.-China Trade War Before the Outbreak of Covid-19 The hand tool industry is one of the most essential industries for Taiwan to earn foreign exchange. In 2019, the total production value of non-power & power tools reached 125 billion NTD. Its import value was 22.57 billion NTD and the export value was 116.8 billion NTD. Its production value and export value even hit the highest records in its history in 2018. The average CAGR over the past 6 years was around 1.31%. Hand tools explored in this article are: non-power hand tools (HS codes 8201-8215) and power tools (HS codes 8467, 8460, 8465). Among these products, nonpower hand tools represented around 75% of the export and power hand tools represented around 25% of the export. Table 1 shows Taiwan’s hand tool import/export and its market share in European and U.S. markets in 2014-2019.

In 2019 Taiwan exported 87.86 billion NTD worth of non-power hand tools to the world. 29.86 billion NTD worth of them were exported to the U.S. market (up to 34.0% of its total export) and 24.22 billion NTD worth of them were exported to the EU (27.6% of its total export). The export to the U.S. market was nearly 40% of its export, which appeared a significant growth amid U.S.-China trade war, even higher than the total export to the EU. Such a result reveals how important U.S. market is to Taiwan hand tool industry. Due to U.S.-China trade war, lots of orders were switched to Taiwanese hand tool manufacturers in the first half of 2019. With products “Made in Taiwan” recognized as being of high quality to compete with those “Made in China” well known for supply en masse, Taiwan hand tool industry also reported a growth of 5-6% in the first half of 2019 amid

Industry Focus >> U.S.-China trade war, though its growth later slowed down in the second half of 2019 due to the focus on processing the orders made in the first half of 2019. On the other hand, although the total export scale of power tools is not as large as that of non-power tools, it confronted with less impact from the global economy due to the diversity of technology barriers for power tools and pneumatic tools (including not only metallic processing technology, but also Li-ion battery technology, circuit loading system, dustproof system, durability in certain environments). In fact, in the past the export of Taiwan’s power tools did face a much smaller impact than that of non-power tools.

The Impact on Taiwan Hand Tool Industry After the Outbreak of Covid-19 As the U.S.-China trade war hasn’t come to an end yet and the Covid-19 has also brought many uncertainties to the global hand tool industry since the beginning of 2020, the market deployments of many Taiwanese hand tool companies watching closely the U.SChina trade war and trying to benefit from the order-switching effect have been greatly interrupted. First, in the beginging of Feb. this year, orders coming from Europe and the U.S. plunged, influencing the normal operation of a majority of hand tool companies. A few of these companies even reported a turnover loss of around 20-40%. In addition, as the hand tool industry will only activate production after orders are made and the general lead time is around 40-50 days,

the issue of delayed shipment could be still observed in May and June, which is forecast to influence the deliveries in the 3rd quarter this year. The market situation in the second half of this year is still unclear and has to be dependent upon how fast the economies in Europe and America will be reopened. In the following paragraphs the impact on Taiwan’s top 5 exported hand tools of various categories will be analyzed based on their final shipment destinations (i.e., global, U.S., and European markets).

a. Export to the Global Market- The Same Period Comparison (H1 2020 vs. H1 2019) and Impact Analysis In the first half of 2020 Taiwan exported 52.08 billion NTD worth of hand tools to the world, down 11.9% from 59.1 billion NTD recorded in the first half of 2019. Table 2 shows the impact on Taiwan’s top 5 hand tools of various categories exported to the world. In the first half of 2020 the non-power hand tools Taiwan exported to the world that showed a more significant decline were: other hand tools (-12.3%), hand-operated wrenches & spanners and sleeves (-16.9%), hand tool sets (-19.1%); in terms of power tools, the products that showed a more significant decline were: other non-reversible hand-held pneumatic tools (-12.6%), other hand-held tool accessories (-13.0%); in terms of fastening hand tools, the products that showed a more significant decline were: interchangeable socket wrenches with or without handles (-18.5%), hand-operated wrenches & spanners (-15.0%), hand-held pneumatic spanners (-30.8%).

Industry Focus >> b. Export to the U.S.- The Same Period Comparison (H1 2020 vs. H1 2019) and Impact Analysis In the first half of 2020 Taiwan exported 20.16 billion NTD worth of hand tools to the U.S., down 6.2% from 20.16 billion NTD recorded in the first half of 2019. Such a decline was not as low as the 11.9% decline of the entire industry, showing that Taiwan’s hand tool export to the U.S. did not appear a significant decline. Table 3 shows the impact on Taiwan’s top 5 hand tools of various categories exported to the U.S. in the first half of 2020. In the first half of 2020 the non-power hand tools Taiwan exported to the U.S. that showed a more significant decline were: hand-operated wrenches & spanners and sleeves (-9.0%), hand tool sets (-18.9%). On the other hand, the products that were not impacted by the pandemic and still showed growth were interchangeable tools or hand-operated hand tools for machines (up 15.6%); in terms of power hand tools, the products that showed a more significant decline were: non-reversible hand-held pneumatic tools (-12.0%), other hand-held tool accessories (-10.0%). On the other hand, the products that were not impacted by the pandemic and still showed growth were reversible hand-held pneumatic tools (up 9.4%); in terms of fastening hand tools, the products that showed a more significant decline were: hand-operated wrenches and spanners (-45.2%), hand-held pneumatic wrenches (-37.2%), power socket wrenches (-31.4%). It is obvious that fastening hand tools were stricken by various levels of impact in U.S. market.

Solutions of Taiwanese Government and Companies

a. For Taiwanese Government

b. For Taiwanese Hand Tool Companies

1. Financial Relief: Taiwanese Government has been very active in providing suffering hand tool companies with financial relief. As of this June, the total value of the financial relief provided has been over 0.5 billion NTD, benefiting around 11,000 people. The continuous simplification of the application procedure and the expansion to cover more people in need of the financial relief should mitigate the escalating pressure on hand tool companies.

1. The U.S.-China trade war and the Covid-19 pandemic have reshuffled the global hand tool supply chain. As a result, in order to gain a firm presence in the markets which have not been saturated yet, it is suggested that Taiwan hand tool industry should adopt the risk management strategy for multi-layered supply chains, figure out feasible plan B and backup solutions in different places, or adopt the strategy of various supply origins to avoid too much reliance upon one single approach and the risk of becoming a second-tier OEM.

2. To Reinforce Marketing Approach: Taiwanese Government helps domestic companies promote their brands abroad via approach deployment, talent training, market survey, and strengthening hand tool marketing and promotion. 3. To Help Improve Int’l Marketing: Taiwanese Government can help hand tool companies reinforce their sales to focused international markets or niche industries, organize delegation to participate int’l trade shows or visit local buyers around the world, integrate resources from various official authorities, help Taiwanese hand tool companies penetrate into the supply chain of international leading companies, and give purchasing orientations for foreign large companies to help increase orders of Taiwan hand tool industry.

2. Hand tool companies can make the most of their time amid the Covid-19 to readjust their plans or operations, such as establishing strategic alliance with companies from different industries to develop IT-enabled hand tools to search for new business opportunities, or adopting the transformation strategy to upgrade their product level and value, or focusing on the development of high-end products and applications to accumulate their strength in the R&D of critical hand tool technology.

Hardware & Fastener Components - no.50/2020

Although it is uncertain if the global hand tool market after the influence of U.S.-China trade war and the Covid-19 pandemic can return to the normal level as it was before the outbreak of Covid-19, some countermeasures may still be good references for Taiwanese Government and companies to take into account.

Baltic Hand Tool Market Through 2025! Estonia Based on the above figures, it is conclude d t hat Eston ia n ha nd tool consumers prefer cheaper tools, so in the next 5 years Italian and Swedish products will be replaced. German and Taiwanese tools have no chance in comparison with Chinese tools. It is predicted that in the mid-term: China will be the main supplier for this country with about 50% of the market share. Italy will be the 2nd main supplier for Estonia with 20% of the market share. Sweden will be the 3rd main supplier for this market with more than 15% of the market share. It seems that Germany and Taiwan do not have any chance in Estonia.

Lithuania Lithuania is the biggest market in the Baltic region, so countries compete strictly in this market. Based on the above figures, China will have 40% of Lithuania’s hand tool market, while the rest may be almost equally divided and shared by the remaining 4 countries.

Latvia has the smallest market in this region. Lithuania is the biggest exporter to Latvia and its growth trend is 29% annually, which means that till 2025 Lithuania may capture the whole market of Latvia. However, the point is that Lithuania doesn’t have enough power to be the leader of the market, as other countries like China and Germany seem to re-export their products to Latvia through Lithuania. It is predicable that a direct competition among Poland, Germany and China will happen, but Germany and China will have an indirect competition in Lithuania for capturing the Latvian market.

Last Word China seems to take most of the market share in the Baltic market in the long-term, while other countries like Germany may lose their dominance in the region.

Taichung International Exhibition Center

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many global hardware trade fairs this year have been postponed to 2021. However, Taiwan’s success in combating the coronavirus has made it possible for the Taiwan Hardware Show (THS) 2020 to take place as scheduled during 13-15 October at the Taichung International Exhibition Center, making it the only hardware and hand tools trade show taking place worldwide this year. The organizer Kaigo and co-organizer, the Taiwan Hand Tool Manufacturers’ Association (THTMA), have enjoyed a long-term partnership that continues to increase the event scale and expand business opportunities. Faced by the challenges of COVID-19, both organizations have determined to highlight Taiwan’s manufacturing prowess, and have planned strategically in advance to seize future opportunities during the economic recovery. The Organizers are committed to helping businesses rise to the challenges that COVID-19 has presented as well as generating more business opportunities.

Taiwan has dealt with COVID-19 in the best way possible, resulting in the supply chain and manufacturing industries of Taiwan rather unaffected. As such, the event this year is likely to attract more international buyers. During the pandemic, Kaigo has stayed connected with the global hardware industry by contacting international buyers and media via EDM, sharing Taiwan’s successful experience of containing the virus while reassuring potential visitors that hardware production continues business as usual. Kaigo has also highlighted the advantages of THS as an optimal one-stop sourcing platform that facilitates new product displays, business negotiations, and factory visits. With Taiwan’s top performance in fighting COVID-19, Kaigo is dedicated to providing the safest and best environment possible for exhibitors and international buyers to do business.

Hsin-Te Huang, Chairman of the THTMA, suggested that Taiwan’s hand tools industry should “seek business opportunities amid crisis, and leverage the opportunities to set new records.” In post COVID-19, businesses prepare for a recovery in the hand tools business, they should also keep an eye on how the U.S.-China trade disputes continue to shape the global supply chain network. Product orders diverted from China, as well as diversifying outsourcing manufacturing risks are all factors that international companies will begin to consider in developing their procurement strategy. As such, the industry has to plan ahead during the pandemic. “An economic crisis is generally followed by waves of new industry growth, and the current global situation has presented Taiwanese businesses a great opportunity to join the trade show and prove themselves as reliable and trust-worthy partners to buyers,” said Fang-Wei Hsiao, Coordinator of the Market Development Division at THTMA. 0 As the global spread of COVID-19 slows down, and nations worldwide start to ease their lockdown restrictions, the global economy is expected to be back on track in the second half of the year. Relatively free from the impact of the coronavirus, industries in Taiwan will be able to respond quickly to pent-up demands of the global market. This October, the top three metal trade fairs in Taiwan will take place. Taipei AMPA, THS, and Taiwan International Fastener Show—will take place in Northern, Central, and Southern Taiwan respectively. Together, the three events are set to demonstrate the capabilities and potential of Taiwan’s metal industry to the fullest. Among those three, THS will kick-off the event series. In response to the stay-athome economy boosted by the pandemic, the organizer Kaigo has set up five main exhibit areas featuring: Tools & Accessories, Garden & Outdoor Equipment, Locks & Fittings, Building Supplies, and Safety Equipment & Products. Another three exhibit areas are also in place as the industry recovers, including Automotive Supplies & Accessories, Fasteners & Fittings, and Machines & Plant Equipment. The eight exhibit areas in total will join Taiwan’s hardware and hand tools businesses in setting another brilliant business record. Kaigo is now also launching event services to meet the needs of all participants during the pandemic. For more information on THS, please visit http://www.hardwareshow.com.tw.

The automotive industry is a vital constituent of economic growth in the United States with wide-ranging interconnections across other industries. The automotive industry in the U.S. is one of the largest product consumers of several other manufacturing sectors. The manufacturing sector contributes about 11.5% of the country’s GDP and this sector can hardly survive without the automotive sector.

The automotive industry in the U.S. has extremely important relations with other sectors beyond its role as a key manufacturing driver. The industry is one of the largest consumers of other sectors’ goods and services, comprising raw materials, construction, machinery, legal, IT and hi-tech, financial, marketing and branding, and healthcare. The yearly R&D spending in GM autoFORD TOYOTA FIAT HONDA SUBARU HYUNDAI KIA the industry in the飛雅特 US can reach NISSAN USD18 billion and this amount is 通用 福特 豐田 本田 日產 速霸陸 現代 起亞 sponsored by the industry players itself. The U.S. automotive industry experienced a number of lucrative years between 2015 and 2018, when the market registered more than USD17 million light vehicles sales every year for an extraordinary four years in a row. Although the U.S. market is still one of the largest motor vehicle markets in the world, since last year, the automotive industry has fallen on hard times. In 2019, the country’s auto sales dropped as major car manufacturers registered a weak end to the year and consumers continued to give preference to trucks and SUVs over cars. In 2019, motor vehicle production of the United States was about 10.9 million units with about 2.5 million passenger cars produced in the country (compared to that, China manufactured more than 21 million passenger cars in 2019). Automakers sold more than 17 million vehicles in the U.S. market, with about 4.7 million units of passenger cars and 12.2 million units of trucks, minivans and SUVs in the U.S. That means total sales of passenger cars in 2019 fell by almost 11%, compared with the sales in 2018, which was about 5.3 million units, while the total sales of trucks, minivans and SUVs increased by 2.8%. From the recent decline in the number of new cars sold in the

U.S. we can derive the shift of consumer interests towards light trucks. However, the vehicle sales drop of 1.4% in 2019 can be insignificant compared with the crisis which happened in this market as a result of the recent Covid-19 pandemic. The sales in 2020 is expected to only reach about 14 million units or even less! Together with China, the United States is among the largest automobile manufacturers worldwide, both in terms of sales and production. Some of the top manufacturers by U.S. market share include General Motors (GM), Ford, Fiat Chrysler, as well as Toyota and Nissan of Japan. The big three automakers, General Motors (GM), Ford Motor, and Fiat Chrysler sold about 7.5 million vehicles last year. The highest amount of sales recorded by Detroit-based General Motors Co. with 2.9 million vehicles, followed by Ford Motor Co. the Michigan-based automaker that sold 2.4 million vehicles, and lastly Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, the Italian-American company, with the sales at 2.2 million vehicles in 2019. Looking at their quantity of sales in 2019 and comparing the figures with what the Big Three registered in 2018, we have to say that all have registered a sales drop. A year-overyear decline of 2.3% by GM, 3% sales drop by Ford and 1.4% by Fiat Chrysler in 2019 compared with their sales in 2018. However, their sales vary widely among the types of vehicles. For instance, the sales for Ford’s cars dropped by 28% last year, while their trucks increased by 9%. In each category various brands/models recorded different sales figures last year. Ford's F-Series, for instance, outsold all the other brands of vehicles sold in the U.S. in 2019. Ram brand by Fiat Chrysler recorded sales of 703,023 vehicles and led the portfolio by +18% increase compared with sales in 2018. Based on light vehicle sales in the United States, General Motors, Ford and the Toyota Motor Corporation are the leading OEMs in the United States. General Motors is the automotive manufacturer with the highest number of different brands available, with Chevrolet and GMC being the most popular ones in the United States. GMC with 564,946 units of sales recorded a 1.5% increase in 2019 compared with 2018, while Chevrolet sales dropped by 3.8% to 1,958,925 units in 2019 from 2,036,023 sales in 2018. Last year, General Motors reported revenue streams of USD137 billion with a drop of 6.7% over 2018. Revenue from GM's automotive segments reduced by 8% overall and 16% in markets outside North America. The Ford Motor Company earned about USD156 billion U.S. dollars in revenue with only a 3% decline compared with 2018. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles produced about 108 billion euros of revenue last year. The Big Three companies drive the US automotive industry and employ about two-thirds of all autoworkers and run three in every five car assembly plants in the country. There has been a period of restructuring by the Big Three in order to right-size their operations and be able to respond to this fierce competition in the U.S. market. Since last year, during a global slowdown in auto sales, these three companies have accelerated model changeover and restructured their joint ventures in China, the world's biggest auto market. All these three leading U.S. automakers have struggled hard in the U.S. market, so their new plans in the Chinese market (like rolling out new models in China) are supposed to revitalize their performance, but no one would have expected that the current Coronavirus situation could destroy the Big Threes' plans in China. The industry in generic and the Big Three in specific, will face massive challenges in getting things back on track.
