amplié con una “H” entre mis vocales de mi nombre y eso hizo que pudiera fluir más a lo largo de mis letras y de ahí salió lo que hoy todos me conocen como Johe. Todo el mundo me empezó a llamar así y así se quedó.
¿De donde eres? Nací el 1 de Enero de 1983, en el Hospital La Fe de Valencia, aunque he pasado toda mi infancia en Gandia, ciudad que me vió crecer en el graffiti aunque viviendo en España creo que un rinconcito de mi esta en cada rincón de la Península, Islas Canarias y Baleares por centrarme en España.
¿Quien es Johe?¿ Porque este nombre, algún motivo en especial para ello? Johe soy yo, una evolución de mi mismo. En la escuela nos pusimos motes, Joe fue mi primer serio nombre y años después
¿Porque empezaste a sentir interés en el graffiti?¿En qué año ocurrió? Se me vienen muchas imágenes y momentos a la cabeza, es difícil ponerlos juntos y más codificarlos en su año, pero se que todo ha influenciado un poco. Los años 80 y principio de los 90 fueron una explosión de dibujos animados, comics, etc... ahí ya empecé a dibujar y hacer estupideces en cualquier soporte, copiar todo lo que veía sin saber exactamente que hacia, solo porque tenia dibujos
o calaveras, los escudos de los grupos de fútbol o lo que fuera! Me acuerdo que en el colegio ganaba dinero por los 90 copiando “Bola del Drac”, por esa época tuve mi primer skate! y por supuesto eso fué a más! Las numerosas veces que iba de Gandia a Valencia con mi familia me acuerdo que me encantaba mirar por la ventana, en coche o en tren, pero en tren era ESPECTACULAR! La entrada de La Estación del Norte en Valencia, si veias los muros al entrar a la estación, te dabas cuenta de la galería tremenda, una exposición al aire libre casi de Museo por aquel entonces yo justo como dije al principio solo copiaba todo lo que veía en mis libretas. En el año 1990 hice con 7 años mi primer viaje a Holanda y una de las ciudades que más he visitado desde entonces y una de las ciudades donde actualmente resido y una pieza clave en la entrada de graffiti y conexión más fuerte entre New York y Amsterdam. Me acuerdo que mi hermana, 6 años mayor que yo siempre llegaba a casa con esas cartas de invitación de discotecas con dibujos guapos por allá los 93 y me encanta dibujarlos en papel,
más tarde me di cuenta que todos esos dibujos era publicidad de discotecas de la era de la Ruta del Bakalao en Valencia, Ibiza, etc...entre los campos de naranjo desde Alicante a Valencia por la costa o por el interior se veían pintadas políticas, okupas, símbolos del nazismo, de la república o comunistas, me acuerdo mucho de plantillas de las discotecas de A.C.T.V, Puzzle, Barraca, Heaven o Spook con plantillas que estaban sobre todo por toda nuestra Comunidad Valenciana, eh ahi que me pregunté quién las hacía, es una persona o muchas? Se veían en numerosas partes, ahí creo que fue la primera vez que me hice esa grandiosa pregunta, desde luego tampoco me olvidaré de la firma del bomber BOR aka BORONE, historia viva del graffiti de La Safor donde años más tarde nos conocimos y pudimos compartir noches de carreteras pintando nuestros nombres desde Gandia hasta Valencia y eso coincidió con todo el movimiento del skate y películas de los años 80, por aquella época le dí mucho al patín pero me acuerdo mucho también de la primera vez que vi Beat Street en la tv2 pero no fue de verdad el impacto en mi hasta que vi y comprendí la jerga del graffiti en Style Wars, La
Biblia que nos atacó como una bomba en nuestra cabeza y en la cabeza de toda esa generación antes de mi y que valoro tanto ha todos esos Pioneros y escritores de España que tanto sudaron para tener información como me pasó a mí. En la ciudad de Gandia y alrededores teníamos Sprays pero si ferreterías o alguna casa de pinturas donde robabamos todos los colores que podíamos, pero eso fue desde que cuento mi primera pieza con colores en el 96, aunque años antes ya hice tags con spray y rotulador Edding 850, mi favorito junto con los “canford” hechos a mano. Tenía que ir a Valencia ha visitar la famosa tienda donde un hombre muy gracioso llamado “Paquito Montana” nos atendió y ¿cómo no? esos candy´s sprays llamados Montana Colors. Más tarde una tienda pequeña de ropa trajo los Classics sprays en Gandia y más tarde una tienda de Pinturas logré que trajeran cantidad de sprays y así ahorrarme los multitudinarios viajes a Valencia cargado de sprays. Y más tarde fueron ocurriendo cosas en la historia de mi vida que igual un día saldrá a luz, pero no hoy.
¿Que es el graffiti para ti? Como ya sabemos que desde tiempos de las cavernas pasando por Roma o New York, la incidencia del ser humano de dejar huella presencial está en nuestro ADN. El Graffiti viene de pintada o graffito, del latín scariphare, “incidir con el scariphus” con estilete o punzón, con el que los antiguos escribían sobre tablas. En la época Romana las piedras en Egipto con símbolos y nombres... Para mi desde el principio estuvo claro, pon tu nombre allá donde vayas, ejemplo el “yo estube aqui” o “Killroy was here” en la segunda Guerra Mundial, el dejarse ver sin que nadie sepa tu identidad o sepa quien eres, hay siempre un amor, eso es hoy en día lo más complicado, pero es un acto bajo mi punto de vista más romántico. Sigo poniendo diferentes nombres sin publicarlos, es un juego personal en el que hace que siempre vuelva esa sensa-
ción y me respondan a mi mismo, porque empecé en el graffiti? Algo que me recuerda mucho el acto del Tattoo, el poder dejar huella ya no solo donde vayas sino en las personas por siempre. Aunque mi pasión por la pintura hace que disfrute cualquier material o forma de expresarse en cualquier soporte artístico. Quizás solo me pase a mi, y es que es una obsesión que roza la locura si piensas cuando vas andando por la calle, con tu skate, en coche, avión, tren, bicicleta, motocicleta, o barco, siempre estas pensando en poner tu nombre! Es increíble, mis bolsillos de mi chaqueta tengo rotuladores, de colo-
res, bolígrafos por si acaso me quedo tirado con uno, siempre tengo otro, una bolsita con lápices de cera como los “Carioca” de toda la vida (como si el tiempo dentro de mi no circulara), ah! y eso no es lo último, pegatinas para bombardear allá donde voy, libretas o blackbook, a veces 2 en mi mochila, quizás una grande y otra pequeña, tengo cosas que pegan o que manchan o sprays conmigo...todo señoras y señores! correcto! Para dejar mi nombre, mi huella, yo también estuve aquí!
¿Cuales dirías que son tus referentes Johe? Soy amante del cuidado de las letras y el buen hacer, en cada ciudad y en cada continente tienes tremendos escritores y tremendas crews, podría nombrar algunos como TDS, TFP, FX, EX-Vandals, CTK, 156... Pero también un estilo que me fascinó bastante fue las piezas de “Lokiss” o las piezas de “Dondi” aunque lo que más me fascina es ese lenguaje nuestro en el graffiti, que jamás será muy entendido por muchos pero por otros muy admirado a la vez es tan valioso y grande!
¿Como describirías el cómo ha sido la evolución de tu estilo? Creo que hay etapas bastante brutales en mi estilo, cuando algo me gusta lo llevó hasta el final, lo dejo, vuelvo a veces o quizás no le vuelvo a prestar mucha atención. Siempre creo que la evolución ha venido por cada viaje en mi vida. La evolución de mi estilo considero, fue quitarme el Sambenito de las etiquetas, de estar metido en un solo yo interno y dejar el Ego de lado que se te implanta con poner tanto tu nombre muchas de las veces. El trabajo constante de destrucción y de composición de las letras llevándolas hasta la mismísima abstracción y movimiento con energía en geometría de mi mente, mi mano, mi trazo y mi corazón.
Comparte con nosotros tu paleta de color favorita, porfavor. Después de pintar con toda la paleta de colores que he imaginado hasta hoy en día me siento muy agusto con los colores primarios aunque creo que cualquier color es vida y está aquí para
quedarse! Hay combinaciones que uso mucho en el tatuaje por ejemplo Naranja, Amarillo Turquesa aunque en mi cabeza siempre resuena quizas para un futuro una paleta mas relajada, pero mientras tanto dejaré que todo siga su flujo natural.
¿Actualmente formas parte de alguna crew? ¿Me puedes contar más sobre ella? Actualmente pertenezco a tres crews: La primera crew, Wild Cans desde 1999, grupo fundado en Alcoy (Alicante), ciudad a la que le tengo mucho cariño no solo por la historia que tiene la ciudad sino por su gente y mejor sus artistas, siempre estaré agradecido ha cada uno de ellos por darme la oportunidad de disfrutar de cada uno de ellos! No recuerdo bien cómo entré en el grupo si te soy sincero deberíamos de preguntar a los papis, Kies, Ebon, Kaniz... Un fuerte abrazo para ellos y para muchos más artistas de la ciudad de Alcoy. La segunda crew, EDS o Enviados De Satán fundada en Alicante ciudad en el 1994 con mi hermano del mal llamado Inca (como flipaba con tus piezas cada vez que iba por la estación de tren por el 1999, allí re-
cuerdo la primera vez que te vi pintando, me comí unas piezas en las vías, lo recuerdo como si fuera ayer, yo más o menos reconocí el estilo y la firma por unos fanzines fotocopiados en blanco y negro...), Con Inca estuvieron Icer y Meya, luego Logan, May, Rafa 205 aka 7 muelles, luego entramos Taser, Yellow y yo...pero no recuerdo bien exacto el año en el que entré en el grupo pero quizas fue allá 2010/2011. La tercera es 626 crew con base y conexión Suiza - Chile - Holanda y Castilla La Mancha (España), justo se fundó en el 2000 a raíz de una sentencia, hahaha...creo recordar que entre el 2012 y 2013 Gracias a Sae 1, estes donde estes! ¡Grande Pichoner!
¿Ves compañerismo en el graffiti actual? La energía siempre está ahí, mi casa es tu casa! Creo que es lo que más me gusta de este movimiento, conocer otros escritores de graffiti y poder compartir experiencias en cada muro, viajar, y conocer diferentes escritores en diferentes eventos etc etc...todo a veces sin conocerte, aunque la competencia es hoy en dia mucho mas fuerte y con
una cantidad mayor de cuando yo empecé.
¿A qué recurres cuando te quedas sin ideas para seguir innovando? Intento siempre tener una libreta y un lápiz y seguir dibujando con diferentes materiales, constante en muchas y diferentes ideas e intento seleccionar las que más me gustan y trabajar profundamente con ellas, en realidad todo lo que me envuelve es fruto de inspiration. No solo graffiti, me gusta mucho dejar huella en cualquier superficie ya sea lienzo o cualquier otro soporte como el grabado, etc...
La lucha eterna; legal vs ilegal. ¿Que opinas al respecto? Sin ilegal no existe lo legal así que un ataque ilegal produce lo legal porque se convierte en algo aceptado para el ser humano. Es el “Yin-Yan”.
¿Que piensas sobre la ley, el trato de los agentes de la ley y juratas hacia los escritores? Creo que es una lucha constante como la pelea del Gato y el Ratón.
¿Que opinas sobre el graffiti de España en este 2021? La verdad que llevo viviendo desde el 2014 en Holanda, pero desde aquí sigo de lejos lo que pasa en la Península y creo que las nuevas generaciones vienen pisando fuerte, y desde hace mucho tiempo ya el nivel es muy potente Internacionalmente. Una de las razones que me llevaron también a salir de España y poder seguir creciendo personalmente y artísticamente ya que desde años lo único que veo mal es España como país y algo que me di cuenta desde hace mucho tiempo es que no puedo luchar constantemente contra los muros sin que me hablen y chillen LIBERTAD!
¡Habla sobre tus proyectos actuales! Tengo algunos encargos entre manos pero en lo que estoy verdaderamente contento es en mi primera escultura en metal. Pero no solo una escultura en metal, es interactiva por lo que hay piezas que son movibles y podrá ser desmontada en piezas y hacer el montaje de la misma in situ. A raíz de la situación del corona pensé en lo importante que es la música y lo mal que el sector lo está pasando y lo importante que son las Artes en nuestras vida una forma de comunicación que vi importante en este complicado tiempo que vivimos para dejar constancia de ello. Sin música, sin conciertos, sin festivales. Quiero representar con esta guitarra española mis raíces y mi pasión por las artes en su totalidad y la música en este caso.
Cuéntanos ¿Como es un día per- dentro de ese género? fecto para pintar bajo tu punto Empecé a escuchar Punk, Heavy Metal y de vista? Rock y hoy en dia he traspasado esa línea El día perfecto es Graffiti BBQ, en Valencia solemos a veces hacer Graffiti Paella con chancletas y bañador. Esto es solo posible en Holanda en verano, en invierno siempre tienes que buscar un sitio cubierto porque la mayoría de veces el clima es complicado. Y los horarios son totalmente diferentes con la luz del día y el frío.
¿Que estilo de música es tu predilecto? ¿Que grupo es el mejor para ti según tu punto de vista
que hace que ese transcurso hace ya años pase a escuchar todo tipo de musica BUENA ahora mismo suena Wilson Pickett “Land of 1000 Dances, pero va desde Hip-Hop, Electrónica hasta Jazz o Música Clásica, incluso Afro Funk o Flamenco. Hace poco vi el último documental de Nina Simone, Miles Davis y como no Camaron de la Isla y donde creo que sigue siendo uno de mis álbumes favoritos por no decir uno de los mejores albums de la Historia de la música en España “La Leyenda del Tiempo”

Who is Johe? Why these names, any special reason for it? Johe an evolution of myself. In school we got nicknames, Joe was my first serious name and years later I expanded with an "H" between my vowels of my name and that made it possible for me to flow more throughout my lyrics and from there everyone came to knows me as Johe. Everyone started calling me that and that's how it stayed. Where are you from? I was born on January 1, 1983, in Valencia and grew up in Gandia, the two cities that saw me evolve in graffiti. But I do believe that you can find my work on every little corner of the Peninsula including the Canary and the Balearic Islands. Keep your eyes peeled people and let me know if you see me! What interested you in graffiti and around what year was this? The 80s and early 90s were an explosion of cartoons, comics, etc. So as a kid I started drawing and doing playing around with these, I copied everything I saw without knowing exactly what I was doing. I have
drawing from those days with skulls, shields of soccer groups and whatever else that triggered my senses. My older sister always used to come home with those invitation letters from discos with beautiful drawings around 93 and I loved to draw them on paper, later I realized that all those drawings were advertising for nightclubs in the time of the Bakalao Route in Valencia, Ibiza, etc ... among the orange groves. I remember making some money at school in the 90's copying "Bola del Drac", I bought my first skateboard from that! Back then I used to travel to Valencia a lot with my family, I loved looking out the window of the car, but by train it was SPECTACULAR! The walls that flew by and at when entering La Estación del Norte in Valencia were like an enormous gallery, an open-air exhibition and looking back almost like a museum. So I copied everything I saw in my notebooks. When I was 7 years old (1990), My parents took us to visit my uncle in Holland, I was amazed and maybe that trip already triggered my move to The Netherlands later on. Amsterdam at the time was the city that was most connected in Europe to the
New York graffiti scene. I lived there for many happy years! mFrom Alicante to Valencia there was a lot of political graffiti; squatters, symbols of Nazism, the republic or communists. I remember the stencils of the ACTV, Puzzle, Barraca, Heaven or Spook clubs scattered throughout the walls of the Valencian Community amongst them the signature of the bomber BOR aka BORONE, a piece of living graffiti history. We met in La Safor years later and roamed the streets at night painting our names from Gandia to Valencia. It was a movement; the graffiti, the skateboarding and even the movies from the 80s I felt were sort of interconnected. I was skating all the time and the first time I saw Beat Street on tv2 was unreal but it wasn’t untill I saw Style Wars that really blew me away. It was like a bomb went off in our heads, seeing all these pioneers from generations before me was so inspiring and made a huge inpact. We didn’t have any specialized stores in Gandia, but we did have the hardware stores and some
paintshops where,like little bandits, we stole all the colors we could. My first piece with colors in 96 was fact. I was already tagging for years with spray and Edding 850 markers, my favorite being the handmade "canford" ones. In Valencia we often visited the now famous store of a very funny man we called "Paquito Montana" he watched us well because his cans called Montana Colors were like candy to a child. Later a small clothing store and a Paint store brought Classics sprays in Gandia which was great because it saved me a massive amount of trips to Valencia and back fully loaded with sprays. What does graffiti mean to you? Even in prehistoric time cavemen were leaving there marks on walls to express themselves or leave messages. It’s in our DNA . Derived from the Italian word graffito (“scratch”) and from the Latin scariphare, "to strike the scariphus”. For example, markings have been found in ancient Roman ruins, in the remains of the Mayan city of Tikal in Central America, on rocks in Spain dating to the 16th century, and in medieval English churches. For me it was clear from the beginning that putting
your name wherever you go, for example "I was here" or "Killroy was here" from the Second World War, letting yourself be seen without anyone knowing your identity has a spell of romance to it. It also resonates in me like tattooing, being able to leave a mark on people forever without writing your signature which inspires many and travels the world anonymously. Although my passion for painting makes me enjoy all materials as way of expressing myself. It is an obsession that borders on madness, walking down the street with your skateboard, in a car, plane, train, bicycle, motorcycle, or boat, I’m always looking for places to write my name! It's amazing, in my jacket pockets I have markers, colored pens, just in case one dies on me, I always have another. I usually carry a bag with crayons like the ones from "Carioca" because that doesn’t come off so easily. And then I have the rest of my pockets full of stickers to bomb wherever I go, notebooks or blackbook, sometimes 2 in my backpack. I have things for days that stick or stain or spray with me, to leave my name, my mark. I was here too! What would you say are your references,
Johe? I am a lover of the care that is put in lettering and just admire overall really great work. All over the world you have outstanding writers and crazy good crews, to name a few: TDS, TFP, FX, EX-Vandals, CTK, 156 ... A style that attracts me a lot are the pieces by "Lokiss" and "Dondi", but what fascinates me the most is that language of graffiti, which will never be understood by many but much admired by others at the same time. It is so valuable! How would you describe how your style has evolved? I think there are quite brutal stages in my style, when I like something I take it to the limit, then I leave it. I go back sometimes but usually I don’t look back. I believe that evolution has come from the inspiration I get from every trip I take in my life, trip in every sense of the word. The evolution of my style, I guess, was to remove the labels. To not be put in a box. I try to really dig deep and past my egoto achieve that. Which led to a constant work of destruction and recompositioning of the letters, taking them to the very abstraction and
movement with energy in the geometry of my mind, my hand, my stroke and my heart. Share with us your favorite color palette, please. After painting with all the color palettes imanigable, I feel very comfortable with primary colors. Although I think that all colors are life, have big love for them and often go back! Like there are combinations that I use a lot in tattoos, for example Orange, Turquoise, Yellow. Right now a more relaxed palette resides in my head, perhaps for the future. In the meantime I'll let everything go its natural flow. Are you currently part of any crew? Can you tell me more about them? I currently belong to 3 crews: The first crew, Wild Cans since 1999, a group founded in Alcoy (Alicante), a city I love not only for the history but for its people and moreover its artists. I will always be grateful to all of them for giving me the opportunity to join. I don't quite remember how I got into the
group, if I'm honest, we should ask the elders: Kies, Ebon, Kaniz ... Huge love for them and for all artists from the city of Alcoy. Do you see camaraderie in today 's graffiti? The energy is always there, my home is your home! I think that is what I like most about this movement, meeting other graffiti writers and being able to share experiences on each wall, travel, and getting to know different writers in all the events. I see the competition is much stronger these days than when I started. What do you turn to when you run out of ideas to keep innovating? I always try to have a notebook and a pencil and continue drawing with different materials, constant in many different ideas and I try to select the ones that I like best and make the most out of them. In reality, everything that surrounds me is the result of inspiration. Not just graffiti, I really like to leave a mark on any surface, be it canvas, skin or any other medium such as engravings etc. The eternal fight; legal vs illegal. What's your opinion about it? There is no legality without illegality. Once something becomes accepted by the established
order illegality fades away. It is the "Yin-Yang" of life. What do you think about the law, the treatment of law enforcement officers and jurors towards writers? I think it's a constant Cat and Mouse fight. What do you think about graffiti in Spain in 2021? The truth is that I have been living in the Netherlands since 2014, but from here I follow what is happening in the Peninsula and I believe that new generations have been stepping up, I see that the level is getting very high internationally. One of the reasons that made me leave Spain and to continue growing personally and artistically is that for years the only thing I see is Spain not evolving as a country. I didn’t want to fight a system that felt like I was losing or competing against all the time. I wanted freedom. Talk about your current projects! At the moment I’m working on some commissions but what I am really happy with is my first metal
sculpture. It is an interactive piece based on a Spanish guitar constructed out of movable pieces which can be taken apart and assembled again. Since the Corona situation, I realized the importance of music in a time like this, the tough times the sector is being put through and how music is an art form that we find comfort in and can give words to our feelings. No music, no concerts, no festivals. With this piece I want to represent my Spanish roots, my passion for the arts in its entirety and a profound love for music and the joy it brings in dark times. 15- Tell us, How is a perfect day to paint from your point of view? The perfect day is a Graffiti BBQ. In Valencia we do it Spanish style and do a Graffiti Paella on flip-flops, boardshorts and bikini’s (only the special ones wear a Speedo..). In the Netherlands we can only do this in summer when the sun is out and the daylight lasts til deep in the evening. But there are things to say for Winter BBQ’s with Boerenkool and BBQ’ed Speklappen with your beanie and Long Johns. What style of music is your favorite? And which group do you like the best in that
genre? I started listening to Punk, Heavy Metal and Rock when I was a kid. Today I have crossed over to what feels good in the moment so all kinds of GOOD music. Right now Wilson Pickett's Land of 1000 Dances is playing for example. But it goes from Hip-Hop, Electronic to Jazz or Classical Music, even Afro Funk and Flamenco. I recently saw the last the documentaries of Nina Simone, Miles Davis and of Camaron de la Isla which were great. I think that still one of my favorite albums, if not one of the best albums in the history of Spain music is "La Leyenda del Tiempo" by Camarón de la Isla.
