welcome to Our mission is to empower children by giving them the environment in which to develop key skills. We believe that a positive learning experience outside the classroom will increase confidence by participation and promote independent development. We started as a family business with the simple idea of getting children on the water and having fun whilst learning and improving. Fast forward 41 years and our original aims are still at the heart of our activity programmes today, which focuses on learning through doing and building self-confidence through personal achievement. Our school and group activity trips offer an exciting way to educate youngsters with residential experiences both in France and the UK on offer. We are all passionate about what we do and whole heartedly believe in the positive effects of learning outside the classroom. So whether they are taking to the water sailing, raft-building with classmates or facing the high ropes challenge, pupils develop a belief that they can achieve success both at school and in life. DISCOVER THE
great OUTDOORS
The educational value of an activity trip to a Rockley Adventure centre lies in the unique combination of social, physical and environmental experiences. Our trips offer young people a sense of achievement and the opportunity to succeed in a non-competitive, outdoor environment. We are fully aware of the benefits of learning in the natural environment, not just from an educational perspective but also in terms of behaviour, social skills, health and wellbeing, resilience, confidence and sense of place - our trips develop all of these in young people. In an ever increasing urban environment, outdoor education has become even more necessary as part of a balanced curriculum. Our motivation is to provide opportunities for schools to achieve their outcomes and awaken personal strengths and abilities that have been hidden in the classroom.
What we work towards: MAKE A POSITIVE CONTRIBUTION • Awaken environmental awareness • Increase social awareness ACHIEVING ECONOMIC WELLBEING • Increase confidence & aspirations • Broaden horizons ENJOYMENT & ACHIEVEMENT • Motivate through enjoyment • Motivate through an appetite for learning STAYING SAFE • Learn to look after yourself • Learn about risks & how to manage them BEING HEALTHY • • • •

jack Clark School & Groups Manager Jack Clark tells us why outdoor learning is key. Factfile; Jack has been with Rockley since 2010. He has 3 gorgeous young girls, loves football (watching and playing) and is passionate about his job!
I was recently reading a BBC article which highlighted the benefits of outdoor learning and how it ‘boosts children’s development.’ The article stated that for outdoor learning to come out of the shadows it needs to be fully recognised by policymakers. We fully support this aim to allow outdoor activities to become part of the curriculum and see real value in providing schools and groups with outdoor education options.
Up to 10,000 school children get on the water and stay with Rockley across our five centres annually and with over 40 years’ experience we have found that the learning experiences children have in an outside ‘classroom’ have an enormous bearing on their achievements, not only through putting into practice topics they are learning about academically but also by relating them to the ‘real world’. We will continue to promote the benefits and opportunities available to schools and groups of all ages, abilities and backgrounds in the hope that we can all work together to help shape a positive future for children.
Andy Smith Rockley Point
“"The biggest positive has to be the fact that we can bring a child with us who has severe learning abilities and that she can achieve and enjoy - this is a credit to all your staff who have shown incredible patience with her and given her the experience of a lifetime."” Diss High School
At Rockley Adventure we offer a whole range of activities designed to engage young people and encourage them to embrace adventure and learning - something that cannot always be achieved in the classroom. Our activities provide physical and mental challenges, develop individual skills and encourage cooperation and working as part of a team.

UK
centres
We have two centres in Dorset located in beautiful Poole Harbour and on Poole Park lake. Of the many places in the UK for watersports, Poole Harbour is possibly the safest and most idyllic location, offering a secure and happy setting for children to experience a residential trip away from home. The island-dotted harbour offers a beautiful and challenging environment for beginners and experienced sailors alike.
rockley point As the UK’s premier provider of watersports training and with unrivalled levels of instructor expertise, Rockley Point offers an exceptional range of watersports training. This is our original centre, founded in 1976 and specialises in sailing, enabling your students to gain RYA certificates according to ability. We also provide kayaking and windsurfing sessions as well as multi-activity sessions. The centre benefits from the facilities of the adjacent Holiday Park and offers a rewarding activity holiday.
Poole Park The shallow and extremely safe waters of Poole Park Lake makes this the perfect introduction to watersports. We offer short taster sessions and multi-activity sessions in sailing, windsurfing and kayaking which will suit the widest range of pupils more than at any of our other centres. Short sessions are also more affordable for most pupils making watersports even more accessible.

TRAVEL
Q&A Watersports training & holidays
Rockley talks to Jonny Owen, PE teacher at Ringwood School to find out why Rockley ticks all the boxes when it comes to learning outside the classroom.
How long have you been running trips with Rockley?
Ringwood School has historically been running trips with Rockley for about 15 years now, for me, this will be my sixth year as trip leader and it’s the best trip we run in school.
How did you hear about Rockley and what prompted you to book?
It had been a couple of years since the school had run a trip and it was actually a couple of students whose siblings had been on the trip previously who approached me. We took a small group of 17 and six years on we are looking at taking over 60. It’s the highlight of their time in school.
ask anything more of the staff. Any requirements we ask for on site are dealt with straight away. The experience of the staff both in the UK and France is fantastic - it feels like a holiday for the teachers as well!
How do you feel your students benefit from learning new skills outside the classroom?
I’m a massive believer in learning outside the classroom. Students don’t really know what they can achieve until they are pushed to their limits and for some students their limits are nowhere near touched within the four walls of a classroom. It’s not until they are faced with sailing or white water rafting where they realise what they can achieve. The look on their faces and conversations prior to these activities and then when they achieve them is absolutely fantastic. We’ve had some students who aren’t the most water confident and they’ve learnt how to sail, or kayak or stand up paddleboard, and that’s the reason I take this trip. I feel everyone has the right to see what they can do and the opportunities that a Rockley trip offers ticks all those boxes.
How easy do you find the process of booking a trip?
It’s so easy in terms of logistics and communication. With Rockley, they are always at the end of a phone or email. They’ll come to do a launch assembly and when we do a parents evening all the information is provided. It’s the personal touch and the fact that everything is dealt with quickly, efficiently and professionally which makes my life as a teacher so much easier.
What is unique about a Rockley adventure for the school?
I’ve been on a lot of school trips from the school with other providers and the Rockley experience and ethos is by far the best. We couldn’t www.rockley.org/schools www.rockley.org/schools 01202 677272 677272 www.rockley.org 01202 01202 677 272 26 26 28
What makes the trip so enjoyable for the students?
For the children it’s the whole adventure from getting on the coach and driving through France to reaching the campsite and getting straight in to the activities. The activities are absolutely fantastic and are really tailored for each group in terms of size and group dynamics. This, along with the evening activities means they don’t have the opportunity to get bored. The staff in charge of the activities are amazing, their expertise and confidence is fantastic - they are more than qualified and capable of looking after my students which as a teacher is very reassuring.
"For some students their limits are nowhere near touched within the four walls of a classroom. It’s not until they are faced with sailing or white water rafting where they realise what they can achieve." Is there something particularly powerful in young people participating in watersports, perhaps for the first time?
It’s a great leveller. We have students go on the trip who are very sporty and some who aren’t but want to learn new things. There are those who have some experience in the water and some with limited, but as soon as they go out there and are put in that environment everyone is equal. New friendship groups are formed which I think is very important. Students who have never spoken to each other come back great friends - it’s breaking down social barriers something that isn’t necessarily possible during a Monday-Friday, 9am-3pm school week. It’s also the confidence they develop and life skills they learn. You can’t put a cap on a student’s confidence and how that will translate when they come back into school.
How important are safety procedures when considering an outdoor trip and do Rockley meet these requirements?
Having led numerous offsite activities, safety is paramount for the students - they need to enjoy the trip but they also need to be safe. Rockley support us all the way through with risk assessments and providing the school with all the necessary paperwork. On-site you can’t even dip your toe in the water without wearing a buoyancy aid. The quality of the kit and the fact that it is well maintained allows everyone to have a great time.
What makes you rebook with Rockley?
I feel I’ve built a really good rapport with the Rockley team and that I’m not just a client which I have experienced with some of the larger providers in the past. And it’s just a fantastic trip for the students. The confidence they get, the friendships they develop, the magic, the memories and the life skills is something they will never forget.
all you need to
know
What specialist equipment is required? A watersports trip (unlike a ski trip) does not require much in the way of specialist equipment. We provide all the necessary boats, boards, bikes and kayaks as well as approved buoyancy aids and waterproofs! You usually only need to bring swimwear as well as old clothing and trainers you don’t mind getting wet. Nevertheless, the watersports activities can be enjoyed to the full if participants wear a rash vest and wetsuit shoes, which are widely available to purchase. A wetsuit might also be a useful purchase and these are also now widely available at a reasonable cost.
staff qualifications and experience, instructor to participant ratios and our operational procedures. In addition, our UK centres are AALS (Adventure Activities Licensing Scheme) licensed. We have also developed a comprehensive Safety Management System to monitor, record and implement safe operation of our centres and activities, which encompasses policies, risk assessment, emergency and operating procedures. See also our website for further information on our safety procedures and for downloads of documentation such as our risk assessments at www.rockley.org/ schools/teachers
Do you have to be a strong swimmer? You don’t have to be a strong swimmer, or even a swimmer at all, to enjoy our watersports activities although it helps to be water confident. You will need to inform us if any of your group are unable to swim 50 metres unaided. As mentioned above, we provide all persons with buoyancy aids and provided we are notified, we can cater for non-swimmers.
Do the coaches have seatbelts? All the UK coach company operators used on our inclusive French activity trips comply with UK, as well as EU law (French coaches comply with EU and French laws), and are fitted with seatbelts. It is the Group Leader’s responsibility to ensure that the seatbelts are worn.
Are there any extra charges? Our residential school group trips are fully inclusive of our activities as detailed here and in your group’s itinerary, all meals and drinks from arrival to departure at the centre, insurance and, for trips to our French centres, return travel. We do offer a number of extra additional activities and excursions to enhance your trip. These can be arranged and paid for in advance or on arrival and are subject to availability. No refunds will be given for extras booked and paid for but not used. What about insurance? Our residential activity trips include personal accident and travel insurance. Please see the Trip Planner, or our website, for further details and complete policy wording. For activity trips that fall within the Package Travel Regulations (1993) your money is fully protected by an insurance scheme operated by International Passenger Protection Ltd. What about safety? All our watersports centres are fully recognised by the RYA (Royal Yachting Association) for the tuition of sailing, windsurfing and powerboating and are inspected annually. This means that our watersports activities are run in line with the guidelines laid down by our NGB, the Royal Yachting Association, and encompass
Do we need passports? A passport valid for six months beyond the length of stay and issued within the past 10 years is required in order to visit France and non-EU passport holders may require visas. Young people travelling as a group can travel under a Group Passport obtainable from the Passport Agency. Contact them for further information on 0870 5210410 and see also our Trip Planner. Lost, stolen or new passports will take a minimum of 2 weeks to replace. Campsite and centre rules We ask that all our groups comply with the rules set out by the campsites and ourselves. This helps ensure the enjoyment and safety of all our customers and other users of the campsites and facilities. These rules are to be found in our pupil behaviour charter and will be detailed in our Welcome Talk on arrival of your group. Supervision The campsites organise their own evening entertainment programmes throughout high season such as cabaret performances and music events, which are generally open until 1am. Daytime programmes such as sporting activities can be arranged at the campsite reception. All the activities are subject to demand and may be altered. Rockley Adventure staff are resident at our centres and therefore provide supervision during the day and evening. Certain staff are nominated as contacts for Group Leaders and group
members throughout the day and evening; we also have a member of staff on duty through the night. Group Leaders are required to nominate two of the adults from their group on a daily basis to be their group’s duty contact staff throughout the day, evening and night. Accommodation Both our tent and bunkroom accommodation sleeps a maximum of 6 people. Security Each of our watersports centres is located on a private campsite with only one entrance/exit and is in a separate area of the campsite itself. Lock Box Our centres can store passports, EHIC cards and any cash float held by the Group Leader in the centre lock box. We are, however, unable to provide secure storage for pupils’ mobile phones, MP3 or ipod players etc which is why we strongly discourage the bringing of valuable belongings on the trip. First Aid Our centres are fully equipped with first aid boxes located in the Rockley offices on site. All our main safety boats carry a First Aid kit and suitable communications. All our Instructors hold a valid First Aid certificate and attend a health and safety induction when joining us. Currency & pocket money We recommend that you carry a float of Euros/ Sterling for unforeseen circumstances. However, for safety reasons we suggest that you use travellers cheques or credit cards where possible. Pupils should be advised to bring only a small amount of pocket money; up to €100 is normally sufficient for trips to our French centres and between £20 to £40 for residential trips to our UK centre. Facilities We try to be as accurate as possible with regards to the availability and opening times of the facilities available on the campsites. However, due to circumstances beyond our control ie weather, time of year, local regulations or demand, some facilities may not be available - this will particularly be the case outside of high season (July and August) when the campsites are quieter.
