learning through adventure
“As parents ourselves, we believe in learning by doing and allowing children freedom to explore for themselves in a safe and stimulating environment. These themes and aims are reflected in the locations and activity programmes we provide for our schools and groups. Above all we know that if it is not fun, then children will not benefit from the learning opportunities or gain the self-confidence and personal enrichment that we know they can achieve. We think that we have found the right balance of enjoyment and new experiences that satisfy the needs of both the children and the leaders who, very generously, give up their time to run the trips. We look forward to welcoming you and your group to one of our active, outdoor centres.

believe and you will achieve The educational value of an activity trip to a Rockley Adventure centre lies in the unique combination of social, physical and environmental experiences. Our trips offer young people a sense of achievement and the opportunity to succeed in a non-competitive, outdoor environment. This helps build selfconfidence and an awareness of personal strengths and abilities that may have been hidden in the classroom. Inspiring Independent Minds
Our mission is to empower children by giving them the environment in which to develop key skills and personal confidence. We believe that a positive learning experience outside of the classroom will increase confidence by participation and promote independent development.
Working Together, Learning Together, Playing Together
The relationships that develop between pupils and their teachers, working together towards a common goal, is one that cannot be recreated easily in school, but is one that can be encouraged through a Rockley Adventure trip. As teachers and pupils share their adventure experience, pupils are motivated to work with and respect their peers, all of which contributes to their enjoyment and desire to learn creating memories that last forever.

DISCOVER THE GREAT OUTDOORS We understand and welcome the growing importance of outdoor education as part of a balanced curriculum, particularly in an increasingly urban world. A Rockley Adventure trip is based around the enhanced learning experience of our very own “Rockley Classroom”. It is the combination of our unique centre environments and passionate, experienced and knowledgeable team which place the children at the centre of all that we do. The Rockley team is always available to work with Group Leaders to plan activity programmes and individual sessions to ensure specified learning objectives are met and participants reach the highest level of attainment possible.
Why Is Learning Outside The Classroom So Important? Outdoor Education: Raises achievement in school Advances personal and social development Improves motivation and behaviour Encourages risk and challenge Promotes personal well being Gives young people a sense of place
Key Skills The National Curriculum identifies six Key Skills that “help learners to improve their learning and performance in education, work and life”. Rockley Adventure programmes are highly effective at developing four of the key skills. BTEC L3 Sport (Outdoor Adventure)
For young people post-16, we offer the BTEC Level 3 Sport which is a 2 year full time course that is equivalent to 3 ‘A’ Levels. The BTEC L3, which is run by Rockley Academy in partnership with LeAF, combines theory units, practical activities and employer valued, professional National Governing Body (NGB) qualifications. This fully funded course allows students to gain extensive experience and skills across a number of disciplines including dinghy sailing, windsurfing and kayaking and is designed to enable candidates to build a career in the outdoor and leisure industry specialising in watersports.

supporting development The transition from primary to secondary school and adapting to life at secondary school can be a challenging time for pupils. Our range of adventure trips are designed to support this time in their lives by encouraging pupils to positively interact with each other and to develop their social and personal skills so that they can form new friendships and grow into confident individuals. Recognised Qualifications National Curriculum - Key stages 2, 3 & 4
Rockley Adventure activity programmes develop higher-level skills through coaching in any of the core activities and satisfy all the areas of the Outdoor and Adventurous Activities section of the PE National Curriculum at Key Stages 3 and 4. By setting progressive, challenging and attainable goals, groups can use a Rockley Adventure trip as a great new environment in which to help deliver training in the transferable skills that help children with their transition between the key stages and into the wider world.
GCSE & Duke Of Edinburgh Awards
We can tailor a suitable programme to meet the requirements of the sailing and physical activities section of the GCSE PE syllabus. In addition, schools can choose to concentrate on a specific activity and in doing so can gain National Governing Body qualifications and work towards Duke of Edinburgh Awards. As an RYA recognised training centre and an approved activity provider of the DofE scheme, pupils can now put their boating achievements towards a bronze, silver or gold award and also complete the residential sections of the award. Pupils can be encouraged to set goals to gain certification in the RYA national sailing or windsurfing scheme as well as increasing their theory knowledge in such areas as meteorology.

Residential trips can help secondary school-age children to develop independence and bond with their peers and teachers in informal settings. They provide a wonderful opportunity for children to begin their journey as independent people with lives outside their own homes. A residential week with Rockley Adventure provides valuable opportunities for promoting teamwork, social skills and communication skills. Personal achievement combined with the many new

Camping trips have become increasingly popular as people put civilization behind them to enjoy the best that the countryside has to offer. The children benefit from the space and serenity of living closer to nature in a high-quality camping environment.
Sleeping
A trip with Rockley Adventure means getting the most out of outdoor living, with ‘alfresco’ meals, plenty of fresh air with space and freedom to relax. All your pupils are grouped in their
accommodation according to their age and sex. Pupils, accompanying adults and our staff all eat together in our communal area, which provides a convivial setting for socialising.

Leading the way in safety We are acutely aware that any adventure activity trip cannot be thoroughly enjoyed unless you are completely confident in the safety of the centre and all activities. Over the last 38 years we have worked hard to earn an enviable reputation for the high standards, which we apply at all of our centres. Every Child in Safe Hands

We choose the best and most suitable equipment for our activities, which, combined with safe teaching practices means everyone can enjoy the thrills and gain a sense of achievement on a Rockley Adventure activity trip. Rockley has an AALA license to operate its centres in Poole. This scheme only covers the UK, but we also apply the same high standards to our centres in France. All you need to know To make planning your trip with us as easy as possible, please take the time to read the following information. If however you have any further questions then the Rockley Adventure Schools Team are only a phone call away and would be delighted to assist you further. What Specialist Equipment is required?
A watersports trip (unlike a ski trip) does not require much in the way of specialist equipment. We provide all the necessary boats, boards, bikes and kayaks as well as approved buoyancy aids and waterproofs! You usually only need to bring swimming things as well as old clothing and trainers you don’t mind getting wet. Nevertheless, the watersports activities can be enjoyed to the full if participants wear a rash vest and wetsuit shoes, which are widely available to purchase. A wetsuit might also be a useful purchase and these are also now widely available at reasonable cost.
Do you have to be a Strong Swimmer? Funnily enough you don’t have to be a strong swimmer, or even a swimmer at all, to enjoy our watersports activities although it helps to be water confident. As mentioned above, we provide buoyancy aids and, provided we are notified, we can cater for non-swimmers.
Are there any Extra Charges?
Our residential school group trips are fully inclusive of our activities as detailed here and in your group’s itinerary, all meals and drinks from

arrival to departure at the centre, insurance and, for trips to our French centres, return travel. We do offer a number of extra additional activities and excursions to enhance your trip. These can be arranged and paid for in advance or on arrival and are subject to availability. No refunds will be given for extras booked and paid for but not used.
What about Insurance?
Our residential activity trips include personal accident and travel insurance. Please see the Trip Planner, or our website, for further details and complete policy wording. For activity trips that fall within the Package Travel Regulations (1993) your money is fully protected by an insurance scheme operated by International Passenger Protection Ltd.
What about Safety?
All our watersports centres are fully recognised by the RYA (Royal Yachting Association) for the tuition of sailing, windsurfing and powerboating and are inspected annually. This means that our watersports activities are run in line with the guidelines laid down by our NGB, the Royal Yachting Association, and encompass

staff qualifications and experience, instructor to participant ratios and our operational procedures. In addition, our UK centres are AALS (Adventure Activities Licensing Scheme) licensed. We have also developed a comprehensive Safety Management System to monitor, record and implement safe operation of our centres and activities, which encompasses policies, risk assessment, emergency and operating procedures. See also our website for further information on our safety procedures and for downloads of documentation such as our risk assessments at www.rockleyadventure. com/teachers
Do the Coaches have Seatbelts?
All the UK coach company operators used on our inclusive French activity trips comply with UK, as well as EU law, and are fitted with seatbelts. It is the Group Leader’s responsibility to ensure that the seatbelts are worn.
Do we need Passports?
You are required to have a full 10 year passport in order to visit France and non-EU passport holders may require visas. Young people travelling as a group can travel under a Group

The campsites organise their own evening entertainment programmes throughout high season such as cabaret performances and a disco, which is generally open until 1am. Daytime programmes such as sporting activities can be arranged at the campsite reception. All the activities are subject to demand and may be altered. Rockley Adventure staff are resident at our centres and therefore provide supervision during the day and evening. Certain staff are nominated as contacts for Group Leaders and group members throughout the day and evening; we also have a member of staff on duty through the night. Accommodation
Each of our watersports centres is located on a private campsite with only one entrance/exit and is in a separate area of the campsite itself.
Safes
Our centres can store passports, EHIC cards and any cash float held by the Group Leader in the centre safe. We are, however, unable to provide secure storage for pupils’ mobile phones, MP3 or ipod players etc which is why we strongly discourage the bringing of valuable belongings on the trip.
We try to be as accurate as possible with regards to the availability and opening times of the facilities available on the campsites. However, due to circumstances beyond our control ie weather, time of year, local regulations or demand, some facilities may not be available - this will particularly be the case outside of high season (July and August) when the campsites are quieter.

Our centres are fully equipped with first aid boxes located in the Rockley offices on site. All our main safety boats carry a First Aid kit and VHF radio. All our Instructors hold a valid First Aid certificate and attend a health and safety induction when joining us.

Your contract is with Rockley Watersports Ltd (hereinafter referred to as “the Company”).
2. Bookings
No booking will be final and no contract will be entered into until a deposit as shown in the price schedule has been received by the Company for each paying place together with a completed booking form signed by the Group Leader and has been acknowledged in writing by the Company. This deposit is non refundable, unless a refund falls within the terms of the insurance cover. Provisional bookings will be acknowledged in writing by the Company and will only be held for 15 days from the date of acknowledgement. The person signing the booking form accepts the Company’s conditions of booking on behalf of all members of the group and will be our point of contact for correspondence.
3. Cost of Your Trip
The Company’s prices are published in good faith, based on the current academic year. If amendments to term dates alter peak dates in 2014, the Company reserves the right to amend the published price bands. The exchange rate used for overseas trips and quoted below was published in “The Guardian” on 9 February 2014 at £1 = 1.1622 euros. The Company reserves the right to increase or decrease the prices of unsold trips at any time. The price of your chosen trip will be confirmed at the time of booking. Once the price of your chosen trip has been confirmed at the time of booking, then subject to the correction of errors, the Company will only increase or decrease the price in the following circumstances. Price increases after booking will be passed on by way of a surcharge. A surcharge will be payable if transportation costs and/or dues, taxes or fees payable for services, such as embarkation or disembarkation fees at ports, increase or the Company’s costs increase as a result of any adverse changes in the exchange rates which have been used to calculate the cost of your trip. Even in the above cases, the Company will absorb increased costs up to a total amount equivalent to 2% of the cost of your confirmed trip (excluding insurance premiums and any amendment charges). Only if the increased costs exceed this 2% will the Company levy a surcharge. If a surcharge is greater than 10% of the cost of your trip (excluding insurance premiums and any amendment charges), you will be entitled to cancel your booking and receive a full refund of all monies paid to the Company except for insurance premiums and amendment charges. You have 14 days from the issue date printed on the surcharge invoice to inform the Company if you want to cancel for this reason. If you do not inform the Company that you wish to cancel within this period of time, the Company is entitled to assume that you do not wish to cancel and you will pay the surcharge. We reserve the right to impose surcharges due to government action.
4. Payment of Balances
The outstanding balance for your trip should be paid as detailed below: Second Deposit £60 per paying place due 3 months after 1st deposit Balance due 2 months prior to your departure date .
32
5. Cancellation
If more than 8 weeks before departure date: 1. The deposit(s) paid may be transferred to a substitute member, however, an administration charge of £20 per transfer will be made. 2. If no substitute member, any monies, except the deposits so far paid will be refunded in full. If less than 2 months prior to departure date: 1. No refund is due. The date of cancellation is the date of the receipt of written advice to the Company’s office in Poole. NOTE: The cancellation charges can be refunded via the school group insurance, provided that the cancellation falls within the terms of the policy - i.e. necessary cancellation due to injury or illness. Claims must be made directly with the insurance company.
6. Group Size and Group Travel
The Company has a minimum group size of 10. Groups of less than 35 (full paying) cannot be guaranteed to be picked up from their school. There is a charge of £250 per school for groups of less than 35 (full paying) to cover transport logistics (such as Feeder Coaches etc). Spare seats in coaches may be used by the Company for their own staff and benefit. If the Company is not providing transport then transport for offsite excursions can only be provided if booked as an extra. Subject to availability and agreement by us, you are able to increase or decrease your group size, you should be aware that changes to your group size may affect the number of concessionary places that your group are entitled to.
7. Alterations by You
The Company will, wherever possible, try to arrange any alterations you may request after the contract is formed. Alteration requests must be made in writing to the Company. Any new places added to the booking will be treated, for the purposes of these terms and conditions of booking, as if they had been named on the booking form when originally signed. Any places removed from the booking form will be treated as cancellations and Section 5 above applies.
8. Company Alterations
The arrangements detailed in this booking and in the Company’s Brochure and on the Company’s website are given in good faith at the time of printing or publication. The Company reserves the right to provide comparable alternative arrangements if operational or other considerations so dictate. Most changes will be minor and will be advised at the earliest possible date. No employee or representative of this Company has the authority to verbally vary these terms and conditions or the information within our brochure, other Company literature or to enter into verbal agreements with customers of the Company. No variation in these conditions or otherwise in the terms upon which a trip is booked and no promise to refund money paid to the Company shall be valid unless in writing and signed by a Director of the Company. For trips abroad only, and limited to where payments are NOT received by the due dates, the price of your trip may be subject to surcharge as a result of currency fluctuations. In the event of a surcharge being necessary we will undertake to bear the first 2% of the increase.

9. Group Leader Responsibility
The Group Leader is responsible for obtaining relevant safety and medical information for ALL members of the group and providing Rockley Watersports with this information in good time for the trip. It is the Group Leader’s responsibility to ensure that they are in possession of all necessary travel and health documents for all members of the group before departure. The Company will provide the Group Leader with a Behaviour Charter outlining the standard of behaviour as well as certain rules with regard to safety that the group must adhere to. The Group Leader is responsible for ensuring that all members of the group are aware of the Company’s Behaviour Charter.
10. Behaviour and Supervision
All teachers and other adults accompanying a group agree to act ‘in loco parentis’ and be responsible for the good behaviour of their students and will adequately supervise their own group. On activity sessions, this responsibility is delegated to the Company’s staff. Whilst at centre, the Group Leader will, on a daily basis, nominate two adult members of the group to be the duty contact staff throughout the day, evening and night for the group. Where damage is caused to the Company’s equipment e.g. boats, tents, etc as a result of willful damage by a group member or under the influence of drink or drugs, or as a result of a group member not obeying the Company staff’s instructions, then the group will be responsible for the full amount of the repair or replacement. The Company expects all members of a group to have consideration for other people. If in the Company’s reasonable opinion or in the reasonable opinion of any other person in authority, you or any member of your group behaves in such a way as to cause or be likely to cause danger, upset or distress to any third party or damage to property, the Company is entitled, without prior notice to terminate the trip of the person(s) concerned. In this situation, the person(s) concerned will be required to leave the Company’s centre. The Company will have no further responsibility toward such person(s) including any return travel arrangements. No refunds will be made and the Company will not pay any expenses or costs incurred as a result of the termination.

11. Force Majeure
The Company reserves the right to cancel/curtail your trip due to circumstances amounting to ‘Force Majeure’ - these include, but are not limited to, war, riots, government action, terrorism, fire, weather conditions, strike action and all similar events outside the Company’s or the supplier of contracted services’ control which prevent or effect the Company’s contractual obligation. Where such circumstances occur the Company will not be liable to pay you refunds or compensation.
12. Company Liability
The Company accepts responsibility should any of the services which we are contractually obliged to provide prove deficient or not of reasonable standard. This includes responsibility for the acts or omissions of any of our employees, subcontractors and suppliers. Save that as detailed below, no liability is accepted for death, injury or illness. The Company does not accept liability or responsibility for personal injury to, or the death of any participant howsoever caused unless by the proven negligence of the Company, employees, suppliers or subcontractors. In addition, the Company is NOT liable for death, injury or illness caused by an activity outside of the Company’s activities. The Company cannot accept liability for causes of dissatisfaction which are not notified to us, in writing, within 28 days of completion of the trip. The Company is only liable for the provision of special requests where the Company has confirmed their availability in writing beforehand.
13. Brochures
The Company’s brochures are prepared some months in advance. Every reasonable effort is made to ensure the accuracy of the facts contained in the published brochures. If the Company ascertains or is notified of any subsequent changes to the published details herein, the Company will advise you as soon as is reasonably possible.
14. Personal Property
Your personal property, including baggage, is your own responsibility at all times, unless any loss or damage is due to the negligence or failure of the Company to carry out its responsibility.
15. Equipment

16. Travel Tickets

All waterbased activities are offered subject to availability. The Company cannot be held responsible for loss of use of watersports equipment due to adverse weather conditions.
18. Restaurants and Local Facilitites
In early and late season some restaurants and local facilities may be closed and although mentioned in the brochure and Group Leader’s Guide, cannot be guaranteed.
19. Special Requests
Any special requests must be clearly notified to the Company in writing. The Company will endeavour to meet any special requests made by you and ensure that these are forwarded to the appropriate persons. The Company cannot guarantee, however, that special requests will only be held to form part of the contract
between you and the Company when they have been confirmedin writing to be guaranteed by the Company.
20. Complaints
It is the Company’s aim to give you an enjoyable and trouble-free trip. If your complaint cannot be resolved there and then, please complete one of our Client Liaison forms at the centre and notify us, in writing, immediately upon your return. Because of the difficulties of investigating a complaint too long after the event, the Company cannot consider any complaint unless it is received, in writing, within 28 days of your group’s return from their trip. Disputes arising out of, or in connection with this contract which cannot be amicably settled may be referred to arbitration, if you so wish, under a special scheme which is administered quite independently by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.
