Division I schools are raising academic standards in 2016, which is to ensure collegebound student-athletes are ready to succeed in the college classroom. In all three divisions across the nation, student-athletes are joining their peers in new classes, with many of them fresh from summer internships or study abroad trips. Before exhausting the athletics eligibility and continue to pursue graduate level degrees, many student-athletes earn their undergraduate degrees. More than 19,131 student-athletes had already earned their undergraduate degrees in the most recent academic year. And most will go pro in something other than sports for the great majority of student-athletes. It has several measuring tools to track and improve the academic success of studentathletes as the NCAA works to help student-athletes be successful on the field in the classroom and in life. About division I governance reform: Student-athletes will firstly have a seat on the highest DI governance committees. Division I adopted a new governance model intended to preserve Division I and better support student-athletes earlier this summer. It was presidentially led to the restructuring process, membership-driven and included voices from all different segments of the division. It is a simpler and easy-to-navigate structure result that
allows for more participation opportunities for key decision-makers and for the first time gives a vote to student-athletes. A group of schools as part of the new structure in the five highest-resourced conferences were given the flexibility to make rules that will better allow them to use their resources to benefit student-athletes and the new structure will be fully implemented by mid-2015. Student athletes compete in 23 NCAA sports competing for a spot in one or more of 89 national championships.
