EDITORS’ LETTER We’re back—and this time it’s personal.

A

fter a difficult Autumn during which almost all of our online presence was hacked, we’re up and running again. FAULT is now on the cusp of its tenth issue—no mean feat considering that we’re independently run and feature almost no advertising—and, looking back on some of our previous issues, there’s a clear evolution in place. Like any popular culture magazine, FAULT moves with the times; we are constantly adapting to different moods, movements, and circumstances. That said, we’ve always believed in our own integrity above all else, and that has been borne out through every issue of FAULT so far. We value style over fashion, substance over superfluity, the personal over the institutional, and, crucially, groundbreaking over group-thinking. That is why, in this FAULT provoking issue, we are focusing on the theme of regeneration. We picked the word carefully— regeneration combines elements of both evolution and revolution. It stands for the creation of something that respects and incorporates its past but simultaneously brings forth something that is renewed and better than before. After all, the whole ethos of FAULT is to act as an open platform for multidisciplinary creative people to showcase their work. We pride ourselves on being a magazine that opens the door to new creative concepts and collaborations, one that welcomes dynamic changes in the creative industries that are not

prescribed, and one that respects cultural regeneration without giving in to fads. With that in mind, we are proud to announce another FAULTful issue to coincide with the last ebb of 2011. We look back on some of the highlights of the year and look forward to exciting times ahead. While there is no denying that we are all suffering in the midst of a crippling economic downturn— one that shall no doubt continue for a long time—it is also true that some of the greatest creative developments are often made in similar situations. We’ve spoken to some of the most exciting breakthrough acts of our times about their creative processes. We also take a look at how culture and creativity regenerates itself even in the most depressing of circumstances. Stunning Mayra Veronica covers our music section, and, in a FAULT exclusive, she gives her own unique take on cultural reinvention through creativity. Mayra is an artist who refuses to be pigeonholed by ethnicities, art forms, or genres, and her inspiring interview sets the tone for an issue which stretches across the creative spectrum. Alongside Mayra, our music section also features an intimate view of Cobb Studios, one of the best-kept secrets in contemporary American music. We speak to the boys at Cobb about being in the pressure cooker that is the studio during a recording session, and how Cobb Studio is nothing like that conventional assessment. Featuring never-before-seen photos from inside the studio and at intimate

early gigs with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Kasabian, it’s an homage to the benefits of personal relationships in the creative process. It is that focus on collaboration and community within creativity that sees this issue coincide with the launch of the beta version of YourFAULT. We’ve mentioned it in previous issues and online, so we won’t go into it any more here save to say that it’s now finally online at http://www.fault-magazine.com/ yourFAULT. As a little gift to our readers, we’ve arranged for free accounts for everyone who emails nick@fault-magazine.com with the phrase “Your FAULT is my FAULT,” so please enjoy that. Updates and special features for members will be announced at regular intervals throughout the year. Back to this issue, then, and back to regeneration. Issue 9 also includes a number of personalities who have been around for some time but have recently encouraged people to take a fresh look in terms of recent projects. In that category we include those such as Lynn Collins, who has recently made the transition from Shakespeare and the stage to drama and, increasingly, fantasy/sci-fi. Her latest project, John Carter, is set to be an epic of magnificent proportions, and we’re thrilled to have been offered an exclusive shoot and interview with her. Leven Rambin provides the Hollywood counterbalance: her big role this year is as Glimmer in another futuristic epic—the first film in The Hunger Games trilogy. FAULT is proud to be one of the few magazines that represents true

value for money in terms of content and this issue is no exception. The Regeneration issue is full to the brim of talent in every section. Almost every feature is an exclusive, as we feature British bands the Horrors and Clinic alongside up-and-coming Brooklyn-based acts The Golden Filter and Ex Cops. From a fashion perspective, Ali Lohan takes centre stage with a stunning shoot by master photographers Steven Gomillion and Dennis Leupold. Her candid interview reveals her professional focus in the wake of near-constant media pressure, while her shoot showcases an outstanding natural talent which is sure to regenerate the fashion industry. Ali’s fashion focus comes alongside yet another exclusive with Londonbased designers Felder Felder and finds its natural counterpoint in our FAULT Men cover. Fashionable but unconventional, Jackson Rathbone speaks to FAULT about his constant regeneration of his own career. From actor to producer to musician, Jackson is the epitome of a cross-disciplinary creative. All that plus the incomparable work of one of our FAULT Favourite photographers Hans Weinheimer, more exclusives with Elizabeth Mitchell, Tallulah Harlech, Michael Steger, Will Poulter, the Meek and much more. Don’t say we don’t spoil you. This is all-exclusive, all-personal, allregenerated. This is all your FAULT. Love from, The FAULT Editors
