Still Growing

Price, location drive more to Prince William

By Jonathan Hunley Times Staff Writer

Prince William’s population is growing and will continue to do so, the county’s demographer said last week. The U.S. Census Bureau recently released its annual population estimates, which saw Prince William grow 1.4 percent from 456,560 people on July 1, 2016, to 463,023 on July 1, 2017. County demographer Brian Engelmann said the county could see a population of 465,000 to 470,000 by 2020.

Prince William recently surpassed Virginia Beach and is now the second-most-populous locality in Virginia, behind Fairfax County, at 1.1 million people, according to the Census Bureau. Virginia Beach, now in third place among the state’s localities, boasts 450,435 residents. Manassas and Manassas Park are growing, too, the former having 41,051 residents, according to the Census Bureau, and the latter with 16,591. But no locality in Virginia – or

America – with at least 10,000 residents grew as fast as nearby Falls Church. It increased by 5.2 percent between 2016 and 2017, adding 715 people to go from 13,868 to 14,583. In Prince William, the county gained just more than 120,000 people between the years 2000 and 2010, with most of the growth along the Interstate 66 corridor, as young families moved here, Engelmann said. Between 2010 and 2020, county projections call for an addition of

about 60,000 to 70,000 people. And that growth, so far, is proving to be more widespread, Engelmann said. “Growth has taken place in all parts of the county,” he said, including on the eastern side and in Yorkshire in the western end. Why is that? Engelmann cites factors that have been true for decades: It’s more affordable to live in Prince William than to live closer to Washington. Residents can pay See GROWING, Page 4

The Potomac Valley Church brought their Easter celebration into the community Sunday, inviting neighbors to a “great banquet” that included more than 500 pounds of freshly barbecued meat and all fixings as well as donations of clothing and nonperishable foods. Church member Will Archer said the event aimed to bring the community together for an event like the one in Jesus described in his “great banquet” parable. The event was held in the Freedom High School parking lot in Woodbridge. Potomac Valley Church Evangelist Will Archer explains the reasoning behind “The Great Banquet” and his desire to serve the community.

Woodbridge man sentenced for conspiracy to bring heroin, cocaine to U.S. A Woodbridge man was one of two men sentenced last week for his role in a conspiracy to import heroin and cocaine into the United States from El Salvador. Jose Alejandro Orellana Montalvo, 26, of Woodbridge, and Rosemberg Martin Majano, 40, of Lithia Springs, Georgia, were participants in a conspiracy to smuggle more than $400,000 worth of heroin and cocaine into the United States from El Salvador, according to a U.S. Attorney’s Office news release. Majano carried the drugs in his checked luggage on a flight from El Salvador into Washington Dulles International Airport, prosecutors said. When Majano arrived at the airport, officers with U.S. Customs and Border Protection discovered the heroin and cocaine concealed within food packaging in his luggage. Majano admitted that he was being paid to deliver the packages to someone in the airport, according to the news release. Special agents with the Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations, conducted surveillance and identified Orellana Montalvo as the person who planned to pick up the narcot-

ics from Majano, prosecutors said. Orellana Montalvo was arrested after he tried to pick up Majano outside of a restaurant in Herndon. Majano was sentenced to 10 years and one month in prison, and Orellana Montalvo was sentenced to 12 years and seven months in prison.

Dumfries woman arrested in domestic stabbing A 55-year-old Dumfries woman was arrested early Thursday after a domestic altercation and stabbing in the 3100 block of Chesapeake Drive Jackie Roderick in Dumfries. Police were called to an apartment there at 6:15 a.m. March 29 after the victim, a 55-year-old man, reported suffering a stab wound to his hand. The victim, whose name was not released, was treated an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, according to a Prince William County police press release. The man told police he woke to find the woman, an acquaintance, on top of him and holding a knife against his neck. The man said the woman stabbed him in the hand when he reached for his phone to

call police. The accused was arrested at the scene without incident, the press release said. Jackie Deann Roderick, 55, of 3104 Chesapeake Drive, in Dumfries, has been charged with malicious wounding and is being held without bond in connection with the incident.

Seattle man arrested for suspicious packages sent to area military bases Federal law-enforcement officials have arrested a Seattle man in connection with suspicious packages sent recently to several Washington-area U.S. government mail-processing facilities, and they are warning residents to remain cautious about any unexpected or unfamiliar parcels that might arrive on their doorsteps. In a press release, the FBI’s Washington field office reported March 27 that the packages were received by mail-processing facilities at Fort Belvoir; Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling and Fort Lesley J. McNair, both in Washington, D.C.; the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren; and the Central Intelligence Agency at Langley. Each package was collected and will be analyzed at the FBI Labora-

tory at Quantico. An initial investigation determined the packages contained “potential destructive devices” and appeared to be sent by the same individual from the Seattle area, according to the press release. Thanh Cong Phan, 43, was taken into custody March 26 by FBI Seattle and the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office at his residence in Everett, Washington, the press release said. Phan made his initial appearance in the Western District of Washington March 27. The FBI statement said it’s possible that more packages were mailed to additional mail-processing facilities in the Washington area and continues to advise people “to remain vigilant” and not touch, move or handle any suspicious or unknown packages. “The FBI takes all suspicious packages seriously and has been coordinating with our local, state and federal partners on established protocols of how to handle suspicious packages,” the statement said. Any suspicious packages should be reported to the Prince William County police department or the FBI at tips.fbi.gov. The joint investigation with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service continues.

And though Metrorail stops short of Prince William, the Virginia Railway Express commuter train serves commuters on both sides of the county, along the Interstate 95 and Interstate 66 corridors, and there are multiple commuter lots where residents can park and carpool or “slug” to work. These kinds of factors will drive continued growth in Prince William, Engelmann said. The county produces its own population estimates every quarter, which can be different from the Census Bureau’s because they use

different methodologies, Engelmann said.

The county’s most recent estimate, as of Dec. 31, puts

the population at 456,105. How is the county dealing with growth? Prince William Board of County Supervisors Chairman Corey Stewart said the county is doing well as compared to other fast-growing places. The county has a robust road-building program, said Stewart, R-At Large, and is opening new school – or adding to existing ones – every year. Quality of life continues to improve in Prince William, Stewart said, as does job growth. Stewart said when he was first elected chairman of the county board in 2006, about 66 percent of the county’s workforce was employed outside the county. That figure is now down to 60 percent.

“So, we’re moving in the right direction,” he said. “It just takes time.” The county’s recent job growth is in the life sciences, advanced manufacturing and defense sectors, Stewart said. In terms of residential growth, the chairman pointed out that much of the current development is in residential projects that were approved years ago, and that the county hasn’t approved many large housing projects recently. But he also noted that as long as people want to live near Washington, the county is likely to see some growth. Satterwhite to run for School Board chairman in November SATTERWHITE, from Page 1 the Nov. 6 special election. The board will then vote on Wednesday, April 18, to appoint one of those 20 candidates to take the chairman’s seat until voters select a new school board chair in the upcoming Nov. 6 election. Satterwhite said she opted out of

the appointment process because she wants to minimize further disruption on the board, which would have to fill her seat if she won the appointment. Sawyers abruptly resigned from the post March 7. In a letter to Vice Chair Lillie Jessie, Sawyers cited personal and professional reasons

for leaving more than 18 months before his term ends in 2019. In announcing her candidacy on Facebook, Satterwhite, 51, said she would focus, as chair, on “making the school board less partisan, reducing classroom sizes, improving school safety and student mental health and increasing fiscal responsibility and transparency.” In a brief interview March 27, Satterwhite listed adding more social workers, guidance counselors and psychologists to the school division’s staff among her top accomplishments on the school board so far. The school board amended its 2019 budget to add 15 such positions next school year. Satterwhite said she’s also proud of the work the school division has done in recent years toward reducing class sizes, but concedes the effort is far from complete. “It’s going to take an investment. It’s going to take a lot of work with the community,” she said, noting that the division cannot make greater class-size reductions until more new schools and school additions are added to increase classroom space. Satterwhite said she would be in favor of “accelerating” the school division’s existing building plan with the community’s support. Satterwhite declined to talk about her June 2017 vote against extending nondiscrimination protections for gay and transgender students and staff, saying only that revisiting that vote “would not be a priority” for her if elected chair. The school board made the policy change in a 5-to-3 party-line vote, in which Satterwhite joined her fellow Republican-endorsed school board members, Willie Deutsch (Coles) and Shawn Brann (Brentsville) in voting against the change. At the time, Brann was serving as a temporary replacement for Gil Trenum (Brentsville) who was on a military deployment. In response to questions about

that vote, Satterwhite emphasized she hopes to make the school board “less partisan” and would focus instead on her stated goals. Satterwhite was first elected to the school board in 2011 with an endorsement from the local Republican Committee. She served as vice chair from 2014 to 2015 and ran unopposed in 2015. Satterwhite was known to be a vocal critic of Sawyers, who was the first Democrat to win the school board chairmanship in Prince William County. Satterwhite led a successful effort to formally censure Sawyers for making emails between himself and school board attorney Mary McGowan public as part of the unsuccessful writ of mandamus lawsuit he filed last year. Satterwhite also called publicly for Sawyers’ resignation from the dais. In other controversial school board votes, Satterwhite voted against the school board’s decision to shorten the teacher school day by 30 minutes in 2016, a move intended to reverse a 2012 school board vote that added the extra half-hour in conjunction with a teacher pay raise. Satterwhite joined most of the school board’s Democrats last June, however, when she voted to reclassify school nurses as professional staff, a move that resulted in raises for most of them at an annual cost of about $840,000. Satterwhite is a mom of four grown children who first came to Prince William County in the 1990s because of her husband Doug’s career in the U.S. Navy. The family returned to the county in 2004. She earned her bachelor’s degree in education at George Mason University, but never held a formal teaching position aside from the three years she spent homeschooling her kids while the family lived in Hawaii. of up to $6,000 a year in income when that money didn’t come out of their paychecks. Williams estimates the plan would cost $60 billion per year, which she would pay for by closing loopholes from the alternative minimum tax. That tax allows “corporations and the wealthiest 1 percent to hide income,” Williams’ website says. The initiative could be used as a first step toward giving state legislatures, localities and the federal government time to develop strategies to improve long-term compensation for people working in the associated fields, the website says. “These positions are critical to the fabric of our society but rely on public funding,” the site says. “Instead of using the tax code to benefit the wealthy, let’s use it to fix some of the serious problems facing our communities.” In terms of campaign fundraising, Williams had raised $9,630 as of Dec. 31, and had $1,876 on hand. Vangie Williams is busy. She’s working on a doctorate; she’s employed full-time by government contractor SAIC; and she runs a household that’s home to six daughters, her husband and her mother. With all that going on, it might seem unlikely that the 49-year-old King George County resident would also be running for Congress. But Williams is doing that, too, trying to be the first woman of color – she’s African American – to represent Virginia in the U.S. House of Representatives. She’s one of three candidates for the Democratic nomination in the 1st Congressional District, which stretches from Hampton Roads all the way to Prince William County and includes part of Fauquier. Williams faces Edwin Santana and John Suddarth in a June 12 primary to challenge GOP Rep. Rob Wittman. Being a member of Congress would cap a career for her that has seen project management work in industries including aerospace, construction, defense contracting, government operations, information technology and national security, according to her campaign website. She has had jobs that dealt with subjects diverse as the Hubble Space Telescope, Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore and the Watergate Hotel in Washington. She also was part of a small group of contractors whose work resulted in

the hiring of nearly 70,000 airport security screeners after 9/11. Now she says she wants to toil directly for the people. She would Vangie Williams like to see a comprehensive transportation plan for the district, and she’s in favor of single-payer health care. She’s against assault weapons, coining a phrase that she said even Republicans like: “If it takes you 30 bullets to shoot a deer, you need to go fishing.” Williams also would like to see education improved, perhaps to include tax incentives for companies that help students prepare for a career, not just a simple job, and she said thinking outside of the box is only the beginning. For example, why have traditional farms only when solar farms could be a good option for farmers, too? “We need to be more innovative,” Williams said in an interview last week. She also promotes a tax initiative she calls INVEST, which stands for Income Now for Veterans, Enlisted military families, Safety officers and Teachers. It would work like this: The first $50,000 of earnings from people in these situations would be exempted from federal income tax, which means they would be given a boost

Race for GOP nod for U.S. Senate down to 3 By Jonathan Hunley Times Staff Writer

Prince William Board of County Supervisors Chairman Corey Stewart will have only two opponents in the June 12 primary for the Republican nom- Corey Stewart ination for U.S. Senate – Del. Nick Freitas and E.W. Jackson – after three candidates failed to collect enough signatures to get on the ballot. Only Stewart, R-At Large, and fellow GOP hopefuls Freitas, of Culpeper, and Jackson, the 2013 Republican nominee for lieutenant general, gathered enough signatures before the 5 p.m. Thursday deadline to qualify, state GOP Chairman John Whitbeck said Friday. To appear on the ballot, candidates had to collect signatures from 10,000 voters statewide, including 400 from each of Virginia’s 11 congressional districts. Bert Mizusawa, Minerva Diaz and Ivan Raiklin also were running for the GOP nomination, but failed to qualify for the ballot. In a statement posted to his campaign Facebook page, Mizusawa, a retired Army major general, acknowledged the signature shortfall and thanked those who worked for him. “The call to duty I feel for the great people of Virginia and America remains strong and resolute,” Mizusawa aid. “Despite our shortfall, this has been a positive campaign and a tremendous experience.” Raiklin, a military vet and entrepreneur from Arlington, said his campaign had collected more than 12,000 signatures in total but fell short of the requirement in Virginia’s 9th congressional district. In a Facebook post Friday, Raiklin said his father’s death in January resulted in a late start in collecting the needed signatures. Raiklin also cited a communications snafu with Republican Party of Virginia officials that left little time to collect additional signatures before the March 29 deadline after his team discovered they would run short. Raiklin said he would provide a more detailed statement next week. Diaz, a “public theologian” and consultant from Alexandria, has so far not released a public statement on why her campaign fell short of the requirements to appear on the ballot. Stewart, Freitas and Jackson are vying to run against incumbent U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine, a Democrat seeking a second term.

The story of Fauquier’s Lt. Presley N. O’Bannon and the Marine Corps sword By John Toler

Associate Editor

While much has been written about the heroic exploits of Fauquier County native Marine Corps Lt. Presley Neville O’Bannon, during the First Barbary War (1801-1805), less is known about his early life, or why he chose not to pursue a career in the Marines after returning from the war. O’Bannon was born in 1776 in a house about a mile west of present-day Marshall. He was one of 13 children born to William O’Bannon, a former captain in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, and Nancy Neville O’Bannon. It is believed that Presley received his schooling from the Rev. James Thomson, rector of Leeds Parish, who was also the tutor of the Honorable John Marshall. As a young man, O’Bannon served as a Fauquier County deputy sheriff. On Jan. 18, 1801, O’Bannon accepted a commission as a second lieutenant in the U. S. Marine Corps, first serving at the Marine Barracks at the New York Navy Yard, and later on the USS Adams and USS Argus. By late 1802, the Barbary States (Tripoli, Tunis and

Morocco) declared war on the U.S. due to our refusal to continue paying tribute to sail freely off their coasts in the Mediterranean Sea. Many regarded the demand for tributes as state-supported piracy. During the Barbary War, O’Bannon made his name as the commander of a detachment of seven Marines, two Navy midshipmen and a small force of Greek mercenaries organized by Gen. William Eaton, the U.S. Counsel at Tunis. Their mission was to restore Prince Hamet Karamanli as the ruler of Tripoli. It was believed that Hamet was the

legitimate head of the state and was friendlier to America than his brother Yusuf, who had usurped the throne. After enduring a 600-mile trek across the unforgiving Libyan desert, on April 27, 1805, O’Bannon’s men attacked Derna, a coastal town in present-day eastern Libya. They overran the harbor fort at Ras del Matariz and raised the American flag in victory over foreign soil for the first time during a war. In further actions, they drove the forces of Yusef, under Hassan Aga, from the town. It was from this action that the line in the Marine Corps

to

hymn, “…to the shores of Tripoli” originated. For his efforts, Prince Hamet presented O’Bannon with the bejeweled Mameluke sword that he had carried while serving with the Egyptian Mamelukes.

Aftermath and betrayal

After the battle, the Americans were viewed by the populace as heroes and liberators, and it appeared that a new treaty to bring peace and end the piracy was at hand. But this optimistic hope did not last long. Hamet was unable to unite the citizens of Tripoli under his rule, and the

governor of Derna, who remained loyal to Yusef, plotted against Hamet and made plans to recapture Derna. On the morning of May 13, 1805, Yusef’s forces counterattacked, and while they were driven back, it became increasingly clear that time was running out for the Americans. Requests for reinforcements were sent to Consul General Tobias Lear, with the belief that 100 or more Marines could advance on Tripoli and overthrow Yusef. What they didn’t know was that Lear was negotiating a separate treaty with Yusef, which was signed on June 4, 1805, on board the USS Constellation. Eaton and O’Bannon were told by Commodore Samuel Barron, commander of the Naval forces in the area, that their covenant with Hamet was nullified. There would be no more funds to help Hamet, since Yusef was now considered the rightful leader. The American force was ordered to withdraw from Derna and board the Constellation under cover of darkness. “Sensing their abandonment, Hamet’s Arabs rushed the last boarding boat with curses, threats, screams and outrage as they saw the ‘treacherous infidels’ pull

away from the wharf,” wrote John K. Gott in Valiant Virginian, the Story of Presley Neville O’Bannon (1994).

Detail of the hilt and blade of a modern USMC officer’s sword, inspired by the ancient Mameluke sword.

Homecoming

Deeply disappointed by the final outcome, Eaton and O’Bannon headed home, but were surprised by the hero’s welcome they received in Philadelphia. “Admirers presented O’Bannon with a gold saddle and a white satin embroidered cover for his horse,” wrote Gott. Afterward, O’Bannon rode home to Salem (Marshall) on one of a pair of Arabian horses brought from North Africa. Unaccountably, the saddle, satin cover and the Mameluke sword were lost. In December 1805, O’Bannon was honored by his home state when the Virginia General Assembly, at the suggestion of Fauquier Del. John Love, authorized the making of a sword designed with a Mameluke hilt, and decorated with the scene of O’Bannon raising the flag over Tripoli. While these expressions of recognition were appreciated, O’Bannon expected a promotion in rank from the Marine Corps, or at least a brevet. This was not to come, and he resigned his commission in March 1807.

Presley Neville O’Bannon 1776-1850 The terse letter from Commandant Franklin Wharton accepting the resignation made no mention of O’Bannon’s heroic service in the Barbary War. O’Bannon briefly joined an artillery unit and later served in a cavalry company. In 1808 he was made a captain of Dragoons, but when his commission expired in 1809, he was finished with his military service. In 1811, O’Bannon married Matilda Heard, the granddaughter of Revolutionary War Gen. Daniel Morgan. When Gen. Morgan died, he left much of his property in Kentucky to Matilda. The newlyweds moved to Kentucky, and in 1818, Presley

sold his holdings in Virginia to his brother Thomas. The General Assembly finally presented the replica Mameluke sword to O’Bannon in 1812, and consequently the design was adopted by Marine Corps Commandant Archibald Henderson as the sword to be worn as part of the Marine Corps officers’ dress uniform. Settling in Russellville, Kentucky, O’Bannon entered the real estate business and state politics. He was elected to the legislature in 1812, and from 1824-1836 served as the senator from Logan County. Sadly, Matilda suffered from mental illness, leading to a divorce and remarriage in 1832. By 1843, much of their property had been sold, and “Presley Neville O’Bannon spent most of the remaining years of his life surrounded by devoted friends and lingering memories of his role in the Barbary War,” wrote Gott. O’Bannon died on Sept. 12, 1850, and was buried in Henry County, Kentucky. In 1920, a chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution had his remains re-interred on the State Monument grounds at the capital in Frankfort, Kentucky. O’Bannon’s celebrated sword

7

Shortly before the evacuation of Derna in June 1806, Prince Hamet gave U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Presley Neville O’Bannon a Mameluke sword. But before he reached his home in Virginia, the sword was lost. Typical of the swords used by Middle Eastern warriors as far back as the First Crusade, it had a bejeweled hilt, simple crossbar, curved scimitar blade and a Turk’s head for the pommel. The resolution passed by the Virginia General Assembly authorizing a sword to be presented to O’Bannon for his service passed in December 1805, but it wasn’t until 1809 that the sword was completed. It is believed that the silver in the hilt was mined in Fauquier County. By then, only some of the Mameluke elements were used in the design; the blade was nearly straight, rather than curved, and while the distinctive crossbar was retained, the Turk’s head at the pommel was replaced by an American eagle. A gold medallion on the hilt depicted O’Bannon raising the flag over Derna. Over the years, the version adopted by the Marine Corps had other changes as well. Having moved to Kentucky, O’Bannon finally received the “Virginia sword” in the fall of 1812, unceremoniously delivered to him by stagecoach while he was in Alexandria. It remained in the O’Bannon family until 1941, when it was given to the Marine Corps Museum (then at Quantico) by O’Bannon’s great-great-great grandniece, Mrs. Margaret Mosely Culver. It is now on display at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle. Newly commissioned Marine officers are still required to purchase a replica of the Mameluke sword, which is a part of the official dress uniform. The swords are mostly just used for ceremonial events, such as parades and honor guards. Marine officers also wield their swords in traditional wedding arches, under which newly-married officers and their spouses pass after exchanging their vows. A new USMC Mameluke sword retails for about $650.

Fresh from the field to your CSA box By Vicky Moon

Contributing Writer

The long and lingering winter has been fraught with snow and fluctuating temperatures. Weak and limp lettuce from far-off places in the produce section of a local grocery store has been de rigueur. However, crispy crunchy spinach, sweet corn and luscious tomatoes will soon become a plentiful reality. Local agriculture entrepreneurs are hard at work to bring you fresh-fromthe-field and garden-seasonal subscriptions for their CSAs. That would be Community Supported Agriculture, a way of life for many familiar with the practice and an illuminating experience for the uninitiated. Jenna Brownell’s CSA produce, at Whipporwill Farm near Little Washington in Rappahannock County, is all grown from seed. “As far as the first box goes, it’s completely weather-dependent,” she said. “But most likely we’ll have spring mix salad greens, spinach, multi-colored baby carrots, kale, golden, red and candy-stripe beets, radishes and Hakuri turnips.” Whipporwill’s 24-week program begins in late May and runs through October. The boxes are available for pickup at the farm on Fridays between 3 to 5 p.m. or at a host house in Ruckersville or Crozet, also on Fridays. Jenna also works with four local restaurants: Thornton River Grille, Rappahannock Pizza Kitchen, Sperryville Corner Store, all in Sper-

ryville, and the Skyward Café in Flint Hill. She sells them large quantities of the freshest of fresh vegetables available on any given week. She uses all organic methods and operates on the theory of “agri-economy,” with an emphasis on the very local ecology. She considers the type of soil and details of the terrain to a site-specific piece of the land. At Starstead Farm in Rixeyville, Amanda and Stephen Day sell their no-herbicide, pesticide or synthetically-fertilized produce and fresh flowers at the Warrenton Farmers Market (where Stephen’s grandfather, Jim Mello, had a space for 30 years), at the Westover Market in Arlington and in a CSA program. Starstead Farm is certified organic, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture standards. The Days maintain 1 acre of vegetables and last year had 40 clients enrolled in their CSA program. Their Rixeyville spread is part of a 100-acre family farm owned by Stephen’s grandparents, Sally and Jim Mello of Oak Shade Farm, just across Waterford Road. The Days’ season will begin, as many do, with strawberries. The ripe red berries will be followed by root crops, such as radishes and salad turnips. Shiitake mushrooms will be close behind. Their 23-week season runs from May 16 through Oct. 24. Susannah Grove of Piney Meadow Farm in Midland also is getting ready for CSA season. “We have heirloom tomatoes going in the green house,” she said. By

the end of June, she’ll have six varieties of those tomatoes ready for the CSA boxes she offers. “I’ll also have heirloom lima beans this year.” The Piney Meadow program runs from May 16 through the end of October for a full 24-week program. The boxes, which will contain about 10 items, are $375 for a half bushel or $700 for a full bushel. Customers can pick their weekly orders up at the farm on Wednesdays or on Saturdays at the Piney Meadow roadside stand in Catlett at the intersection of Va. 28 and Elk Run Road. Of special note here is the “farm-todoor delivery” offered by Grove’s Piney Meadow Farm at no extra charge on Wednesday afternoons in Warrenton, Gainesville, Bristow, Manassas, Nokesville and Lake Jackson. Grove offers this hint: “Several offices in Manassas share a full bushel among employees. Once we deliver, they divide it up with co-workers and save money.”

A sample CSA box from Whipporwill Farm.

Finally, she added: “Many will now realize they will not have time to plant a garden. So, now is the time to think about joining a CSA. “ At Jane and Ralph Eichoff’s 10-acre Cobbler View Farm in Delaplane, they have just one remaining CSA share available. However, the Piedmont Environmental Council provides information on the buylocalvirignia.org website for CSA opportunities in Madison, Orange, Culpeper, Rappahannock and Fauquier counties. Have a story? Let’s talk Vangie Williams and John Suddarth have two things in common: politics and bowling. Well, they may have more than two things in common, but these are two things I’m interested in. Williams and Suddarth are two of the three candidates for the Democratic nomination in the 1st Congressional District – Edwin Santana is the other – which means they’ll square off in a June 12 primary to be able to challenge GOP Rep. Rob Wittman. That’s the big story. The small one is their bowling connection. Williams’ husband, Glenn, is a professional bowler, and Suddarth used to be the chief operating officer of AMF Bowling Products. Now, will those facts affect the primary or general elections? Probably not. Do they rank up there in importance with what the candidates would do if elected? Nope. But do they make for an interesting commonality that tells us more about these two individuals? I would argue they do. And that’s what I aim to do in this space from now on: relate stories small and large, yours and mine, that tell us more about the place where we live, whether that’s Prince William County, Manassas or Manassas Park.

JONATHAN HUNLEY

What gives me the right to present these stories? Not much. Journalists aren’t licensed in Virginia, and mainly I’m just nosy. But here are my Prince William bona fides (if you’re wondering): Except for a short span, I’ve lived here since 2009, in Woodbridge, just outside Occoquan. My son has been to see Santa when the Jolly Old Elf comes by boat to that river town at Christmas, and Jackson has marched in the Manassas Christmas parade. OK, I guess those are his bona fides, not mine, but one year I did ride around on a firetruck with Santa when he visited the good little boys and girls in Manassas Park. I’m also a Potomac Nationals fan even though I don’t like the Washington Nationals (my big-league love goes to the Baltimore Orioles). I once got a buzz haircut in the Town of Quantico on a dare. I consider the bourbon chicken at the Potomac Mills food court a delicacy, and I remember when two

W’s were unknown here: Wegmans and Wawa. And, another thing about Potomac Mills, I think the skyline does look weird without the big sign. Basically, I’m someone who grew up in Southwest Virginia but who is now a committed PWC type. This is my home, and I appreciate the diversity we have here in all its forms. I also like that we’re near Washington, and I understand the pros of that as well as the cons, like traffic. (“How you like that Northern Virginia traffic?” I remember a relative asking after I moved.) Speaking of that, I do claim this area as part of Northern Virginia, though I kind of like that some natives don’t, retaining a geographic identity for Prince William all its own. Regardless of your position on this issue or any other, please let me hear from you. There’s a million stories out there, and we need just a fraction of those to put in the newspaper. But the best ones come from readers. So no matter what you’ve got to say, or how you say it, my ears are open. Let’s talk. Jonathan Hunley is a staff writer for this newspaper. His column will appear weekly, and he can be reached at jhunley@fauquier.com.

Volunteers sought for trail work at Bristoe Station Battlefield Heritage Park The Bristoe Station Battlefield Heritage Park in western Prince William County was the site of two Civil War battles. Today, it consists of 140 acres with 2.7 miles of walking and equestrian trails and abundant wildlife in its fields, woods and ponds. Those trails need periodic maintenance, and park officials are calling for volunteers to help with a cleanup on April 7, at the intersection of Iron Brigade Unit Avenue and 10th Alabama Way at the park. Cleaning up and maintaining the trails at the battlefield will be part of the larger National Park Day effort. Special attention this year will focus on a 200yard section of an old road that armies used during the Civil War. “For this year, what we’re going to be doing, in addition to our usual activities of picking up trash and redoing mulch trails, is to convert what is the remnants of an old Civil War road into an actual trail that people can use,” said historic site manager Bill Backus. “We’ll have some tools so people can clear out some of the scrub brush, and then we’ll take mulch and mulch that road bed.” Backus thinks people will appreciate the significance of the road after it’s made useful again. “It’s was part of the landscape during the Civil War,” he said. “The soldiers who went to the battlefield actually used that road.” For more information, call 703-3657895.

keep it going and win first place until I retire.” Forty-one bus operators from throughout Virginia competed at this year’s roadeo, which was hosted by the Greater Lynchburg Transit Company. Along with Elatrebi, three other OmniRide operators competed: Eugene James, Frank Cardona and Dexter Smith. All the OmniRide competitors work for First Transit Inc., which is the contract operator of OmniRide’s bus services. “We’re proud that Mohamed is part of the OmniRide team and wish him all the best at the international competition,” said OmniRide Executive Director Bob Schneider. Seeing Elatrebi win was special for Monique Wyche, First Transit’s operations supervisor at OmniRide, who also serves this year as president of the Virginia State Roadeo Committee. “I have seen Mohamed set the bar for himself over the past years to place at the state level, and he did it this year,” Wyche said. “As a member of the state committee it’s always a good feeling to have one of your own win. I look forward to Mohamed traveling to Tampa to compete at the International Roadeo, and hopefully we can have a repeat victory.”

OmniRide bus operator Mohamed Elatrebi won first place in the 2018 Virginia State Bus Roadeo in Lynchburg and will now test his skills at an international competition later this spring. Elatrebi captured first place in the 40-foot bus category in March by maneuvering his vehicle through a timed obstacle course while also demonstrating driving skills such as backing up into 90-degree turns and pulling the bus up within 6 inches of the curb. Elatrebi and 13 other Virginia bus operators who competed in the 40foot category also were graded on a written test, uniform and a pre-trip bus inspection during which they identified simulated problems with the vehicle. This was the fourth time Elatrebi has competed at the statewide roadeo; previously his best finish there was fourth place in 2016. His driving skills are well-known at OmniRide, where he has placed first in the OmniRide bus roadeo for five consecutive years. With this year’s state roadeo win, he advances to the International Bus Roadeo which will be held in May in Tampa. “I’ve been trying to do this since the first time I went to the state roadeo,” Elatrebi said, a Woodbridge resident who has operated OmniRide buses since December 2006. “Now I want to

Twenty jurisdictions, including Prince William County, Manassas and Manassas Park, will simultaneously issue a test message to the public through the Wireless Emergency Alerts system between 10-11 a.m. April 5. The back-up test date is April 9. WEA is a public safety alerting system allowing government officials to target emergency information to a specific geographic area using an individual’s cell phone or other mobile device. WEA allows the messaging to be more targeted and efficient which is critical during an emergency. Individuals in the participating jurisdictions will receive a message similar to: “A test of the Prince William County Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action required.” The alert triggers a loud noise while displaying the text message on cell phones and mobile devices. Individuals do not sign up to receive a WEA alert. Other jurisdictions participating include: Alexandria; Bowie, Maryland; College Park, Maryland; the city of Fairfax; Falls Church; Gaithersburg, Maryland; Greenbelt, Maryland; Takoma Park, Maryland; Rockville, Maryland; District of Columbia; as well as Arlington, Loudoun and Fairfax counties in Virginia and Charles, Frederick, Montgomery and Prince George’s counties in Maryland. Periodic testing of public alerts and warning systems helps local governments assess the system and identify any needed improvements. Public safety officials need to be sure that in times of an emergency or disaster, they have reliable methods and systems that will deliver urgent alerts and warnings to the public. Conducting a regional test supports the continued use, training, and improvement of the WEA system.

Nate Saber pitches against Marshall. Potomac’s 7-0 start includes a 5-4 win over Patriot and four straight wins and the title at last week’s Let’s Play Two tournament.

Speedy Panthers are 7-0 and champions of Let’s Play Two tournament By Noah Fleischman Special to the Times

Although the season is still fairly young, those are purrs of contentment coming from Potomac Panthers coach Mike Covington, whose undefeated team is playing strong baseball. Potomac continued its hot play by beating McLean, 4-2, to win the Eddie Hope Let’s Play Two tournament on March 29. Potomac scored the game’s final three runs, including two in the sixth inning, to take the tournament and stay undefeated. Covington said the 7-0 start is the result of solid baseball. “On offense we have had very good situational at bats and our base running has been pretty good. Our pitchers overall have not walked a lot of people and thrown their offspeed pitches for strikes,” Covington said. The Panthers feel they can challenge rivals on the bases. “Our team speed has really helped and the small ball execution has been good. We need to be better defensively,” Covington said. Potomac had a memorable explosion in a 13-3 semifinal win over Marshall in six innings, scoring 12

unanswered runs after trailing 2-0 after the first inning. Scrappy Cleveland went 4-for-4, collecting two doubles and two RBIs. “The first double made [my confidence] really high and then I just started squaring up the ball and the ball kept flying,” said Cleveland. “These wins make us really confident. If we keep swinging the bat

like how we are now than we can beat almost anyone.” Potomac has been led all year by two-way standout Brody Mack, who went 3-for-4 in the big semifinal win, including a double, walk and two RBIs. Mack led Potomac in their opening tournament victory, a 4-0 win over Fauquier. Mack’s masterful complete-game effort included six

strikeouts and no walks. “Brody is so much bigger and stronger this year, adding about 15 pounds of muscle,” said Covington. “All the work and maturing has really helped with his confidence.” Mack also led Potomac to a walkoff 5-4 win over Patriot on March 19 at home. He was the winning pitcher with two no-hit innings in relief. Mack struck out two and walked one, throwing 23 pitches. Mack is batting .600 with 11 RBIs, four walks and one strikeout this season. He has three doubles and one triple with eight runs scored. In their 4-0 tournament run, Potomac outscored opponents 35-14. Panther T.J. Reney was named tournament MVP. Reney hit .583 in the four games with four RBIs and one walk. He also scored four runs and only struck out once. Three other Panthers made the all-tournament team, including Cleveland, Mack and Ben Thomas. Potomac was scheduled to open Cardinal District play against Forest Park on Tuesday and host Freedom (Woodbridge) on Friday.

Gar-Field basks in beach week title Indians sprint to 7-1 record

By Jeff Malmgren Times Staff Writer

By Noah Fleischman Special to the Times

The Gar-Field Indians baseball team won five games in a row over spring break to capture the Mingo Bay Division 2 tournament in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The Indians (7-1) beat Highland School of Warrenton, 5-4, in the championship thanks to Dominic Hoyle, who went 2-for4 with 2 RBIs and scored a run. Hoyle also earned the win on the mound by recording two strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings. “I truly believe our success in South Carolina was a total team effort,” said coach Nicholas Grove. Gar-Field defeated Forsyth Country Day School (Lewisville, North Carolina), 5-3, in the semifinal with four runs coming in the first inning. Gar-Field was led by pitcher Marty Neal, who threw 5 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on five hits. Neal also fanned six and walked six batters as well. He went 2-for-4 at the plate. Neal has pitched well for the Indians in this young season as he combined with Drew Early for a no-hitter in the season-opening 10-0 win against James Monroe.

Gar-Field is 7-1 after winning their division at a large tournament at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Neal went six innings with 14 strikeouts and Early tossed the final inning throwing only eight pitches with one strikeout. “Marty has developed into a major emotional leader for the guys,” said Grove. “He has really stepped up and has done an outstanding job in his new role.” Neal is batting .608 through the first eight games with five RBIs, six walks and 10 runs. He has three doubles and a triple. Neal has not struck out in the Indians’ hot start.

Grove replaced former coach Michael Meadows. Grove coached at Sunrise Mountain in Las Vegas, Nevada, and Hughesville, Pennsylvania. He teaches social studies at Potomac. “Outside of the program we have our doubters, but within our team we truly believe in what we are doing and how we are changing the culture of GarField Baseball,” said Grove. Gar-Field was scheduled to play Freedom-Woodbridge on Tuesday and hosts Colgan on Friday.

Harrison Whitt and Jake Michna combined to pitch a three-hit shutout Friday for a 7-0 Battlefield victory over Chantilly that gave the Bobcats the Gold Division championship during the Mingo Bay Classic baseball tournament in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Whitt earned the victory by striking out four and allowing only three hits and zero walks over five innings, while Michna struck out three and pitched two innings without allowing a base runner. Battlefield won its fifth game in five days to improve to 6-1. Zach Agnos, Isiah Keller and Casey Rosenthal finished with two RBIs each, while Julien Moran had three hits and Jake Michna had three walks. Adding two hits each were Agnos and Keller. Battlefield took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning and added four runs in the fifth before scoring two in the seventh.

Forest Park falls 7-6

Despite scoring six runs in the first two innings, the Forest Park Bruins lost to Robinson, 7-6, at the Mingo Bay Classic in Conway, South Carolina. The Rams scored three runs in the bottom of the first and four in the second to take the 7-6 lead that they held onto over the next five innings. Forest Park out-hit them, 11-6, but never scored after finishing the second inning with five runs. Joseph Cofer and Andrew Frye led the Bruins with two RBIs each, while Griffin Boone and Cofer had three hits each. Robbie Stoss added two hits, but Forest Park’s record still fell to 3-5. Bruins relief pitcher Jason Owen allowed only two hits/walks while striking out one over four innings.
