NEWS ELECTION 2024

Army vets square off in tight 7th District race Anderson (R) and Vindman (D) are vying for the open congressional seat by J ill P alermo

Managing Editor

Two Army veterans are locked in a tight race in the 7th Congressional District. Both Republican Derrick Anderson and Democrat Eugene Vindman cite their military service as their motivation to run but are also campaigning on broader issues they hope will sway the district’s purple electorate. Vindman, 49, is stressing his support for abortion rights. Meanwhile, Anderson, 40, said he agrees with the Supreme Court’s Dobbs ruling, which abolished the Constitutional right to abortion. Anderson is also emphasizing the need to curb inflation and crack down on illegal crossings at the Southern border. Citing their military experience, Anderson says he was motivated to run by the chaotic departure from Afghanistan in 2021, while Vindman says he’s worried about the future of democracy under former President Donald Trump. “Watching what happened in Afghanistan, seeing that lots of people were not willing to take accountability for any of it, upsets me,” Anderson said after a recent meeting with local veterans. “I had Gold Star family members calling me and saying, ‘My son was killed in Afghanistan. We did 20 years of war there, and this is what it looks like when we leave?’” Anderson spent about 10 years as an infantry officer and Green Beret. He completed six overseas deployments, including two combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. He left active duty in 2016 to attend law school, becoming an attorney, but still serves as a major in the National Guard. Vindman immigrated to the U.S. from Ukraine with his widowed father and two brothers when he was 4. He served in the Army for 25 years and is perhaps best known for his role

in Trump’s first impeachment. While serving as a legal adviser to the National Security Council in 2019, Vindman and his twin brother, Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, helped expose the phone call between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during which Trump conditioned military aid on an investigation into then-Vice President Joe Biden. “As the election came around, it became obvious this country was at a crossroads. I couldn’t sit on the sidelines,” Vindman said after a recent stop at the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Dale City. “Americans’ rights and freedoms are under attack.” Both Vindman and Anderson are also fending off criticisms related to their service. Vindman is accused of inflating his rank, while Anderson is accused of living outside the 7th District. Both deny the accusations. Anderson has criticized Vindman for referring to himself as a colonel, although he formally retired as a lieutenant colonel because he did not serve three years as a colonel before leaving the military. Vindman’s campaign refers to him as a “former colonel.” Anderson says he lives in Spotsylvania County, where he grew up, and

rents a home there. But he also owns a home outside the 7th District in Fairfax County, which he purchased with a Veterans’ Administration mortgage in 2021. Anderson receives a property tax break because of his status as a 100% disabled veteran, which is meant for veterans’ primary residences. Anderson’s campaign does not deny that he received the loan or the tax break but said he is doing nothing wrong. “Derrick lives in [Spotsylvania], where he’s from and has lived most of his life. … He does own a home in Alex-

andria, however, he does not live there or rent it out,” the campaign said in a statement. Members of Congress are not required to live in their districts. The Cook Political Report recently shifted the contest from “lean Democratic” to a “toss up.” Prince William voters make up about a third of the district and tend to vote more Democratic, but the district also includes eight other more conservative counties to the south. Virginia is home to about 615,000 veterans, and more than 91,000 live in the counties that make up the 7th District, according to the U.S. Census. Selina Herndon, an Army veteran who lives in Montclair, said she is supporting Anderson because she believes veterans are more careful about sending troops into conflict. “A lot of these wars, we’re never going to win,” Herndon said. “We’re spending a lot of money and putting a lot of our lives on the line for wars that (leaders) don’t really have an answer to why we’re doing what we’re doing.” Ivan Bolden, a retired colonel who supports Vindman, said he’s voting for Democratic candidates this year because of his concerns about Trump. “I look at the fact that … some very key people said that in their opinion, the Republican candidate is not fit to be the commander in chief,” Bolden said. “That’s powerful.” Reach Jill Palermo at jpalermo@fauquier.com

NEWS DATA CENTERS

Searching for Stafford family descendants A data center investor wants to relocate a century-old Black family cemetery by C her M uzyk

Who’s buried in the Stafford family cemetery?

Staff Writer

A data center investor is searching for direct descendants of Joseph Stafford, a biracial farmer, and three of his family members who lived and farmed in Manassas and were laid to rest nearly a century ago in a small family cemetery. The reason? The investor, which has ties to data center operator CloudHQ, wants to dig up the gravesites and move them to make way for the likely construction of a new data center. Joseph Stafford was born in Fairfax County in 1857. By 1870, when he was 13, he had moved to Manassas with his mother, Hannah Jane Stafford, a Black woman, and his 6-year-old sister. The Staffords were a free African American family and were first listed in the U.S. Census in 1870, according to research by the Ruth E. Lloyd Information Center at Central Library in Manassas, Prince William County’s repository for genealogical and historic documents. Joseph Stafford farmed his land for 60 years, according to Census records and his 1930 death certificate. He is believed to be buried alongside his mother, sister and his first wife, Mary Walker Stafford, in an 8-by-8foot family cemetery located beneath tall hickory trees behind a home in the 9800 block of Chevalle Drive, near the Manassas airport. Nottoway Inn Vienna LLC purchased the home and its 7 acres that contain the Stafford cemetery in May for $3 million. The property is zoned for residential and agriculture, and no rezoning application has yet been filed to allow data centers. But the area is within the county’s data center overlay, where data centers are typically approved. The investors want to “use the property for the most economically beneficial use,” said John Rinaldi, an attorney for Nottoway. CloudHQ already operates several data centers nearby. The search for descendants Stafford married twice and is not believed to have had children. Nottoway

Mary Stafford (1851-1918) is among four people buried in the Stafford family cemetery outside Manassas. An investor is trying to relocate the cemetery, likely for data centers. is looking for descendants as part of the state’s process for relocating family cemeteries. Rinaldi said the aim is to move the remains to a modern cemetery, where the gravesites can receive ongoing care. “One of the motivations behind this is that these are graves that have been neglected for a very, very, very long time,” Rinaldi said. “These graves deserve to be in a place where family members can visit, where other people can visit, and where they will receive perpetual care rather than being in the state they are in now.” The effort to move the cemetery comes amid allegations that data center construction has disturbed other Black family cemeteries around the county. Prince William County officials have

acknowledged damage to two cemeteries with ties to the Gaskins family, a free Black family who has lived and owned property in the Wellington area of Manassas for 170 years. But so far, no one has complained about the effort to move the Stafford family’s final resting place. Earlier this year, Rinaldi informed the Virginia Department of Historic Resources that his client wants to relocate the cemetery, according to Joanna Wilson Green, a state cemetery preservation archaeologist. Over the last decade, four private cemeteries have been relocated in Prince William County, including those moved for the Coles District Fire Station and Charles J. Colgan High School, according to Nikki Brown, a county spokesperson.

Those relocations sparked pushback from both family members and the Prince William County Historical Commission. This time, the commission has no objections and has been working with Nottoway to identify possible descendants and locate a nearby cemetery to move the gravesites, said commission Chair Yolanda Green. To relocate a cemetery, a landowner must issue a public notice, notify local historical commissions, hold a public meeting, and find and consult with descendants, according to Virginia state code. The property owner must either petition the local circuit court for permission to dig up the gravesites or request permission through the state department of historic resources, Wilson Green said. A licensed funeral home director or archaeological firm performs the actual recovery of buried remains, according to Wilson Green. Rinaldi said the investor has not yet filed a petition and has no timeline yet for moving the graves. He also doesn’t yet know where the graves will be moved but said it will be a cemetery where “the graves will be guaranteed perpetual care at my client’s expense.” Reach Cher Muzyk at cmuzyk@fauquier.com

OPINION CITY OF MANASSAS

In a divided nation, how do we want to live together? Our community faces a defining moment as we stand at the crossroads of national tension and local challenge. Divisions that once seemed distant are now finding their way into our neighborhoods, school board meetings and community spaces. But here in Manassas, we have the power to rise above. Election Day will come and go. The yard signs will disappear; the debates will fade; and the pundits will shift focus. But for the people of Manassas, the real work begins the day after. Getting caught up in the partisan noise dominating the national scene is easy. What’s harder, and more important, is to ask: How do we want to live together? I believe in the strength of our community. In Manassas, where history runs deep, we are connected

by more than our political views. We are bound by the teachers who care for our children, the small businesses that rely on our support and Michelle the first responders Davis-Younger who keep us safe. These bonds must be stronger than the forces that threaten to divide us. Yet the national polarization we read about has started creeping into our local discourse. Social media is filled with divisive rhetoric, and public meetings — once places for collaboration — have too often turned into battlegrounds for discord. But this is not who we are. Manassas is a place where we care for

one another. We gather for community events, rally in times of crisis and celebrate milestones together. This is the Manassas I know and love, and we must protect it together. We don’t have to agree on everything to move forward as one community. We don’t need to see eye to eye on every issue to find common ground. We need a commitment to civility, a willingness to listen and a belief that the person across from us is more than their vote or opinion on the latest headline. Local leadership is more important now than ever. While Washington, D.C., may be paralyzed by partisan conflict, local government addresses the issues affecting our daily lives. We don’t have time for political theater. Here, we solve real problems for real people. In the days ahead, let’s focus on what unites us rather than what divides

us. Our roads still need repairs; our children need quality education; and our businesses need support. These are the challenges that matter and the challenges we can tackle together. After Nov. 5, we will wake up to the same city that still needs us to show up for one another. I urge us all to recommit to respect, to listen before we speak and to remember that Manassas is our home. It’s not a battleground for ideological conflict but a place where we lift one another up. The power to heal and grow is in our hands. Let’s rise above. Michelle Davis-Younger is seeking re-election as mayor of the City of Manassas. The Prince William Times has invited Xiao-Yin “Tang” Byrom, Davis-Younger’s opponent, to share her views ahead of the Nov. 5 election.

Like the upcoming presidential election, the race for the Cedar Run District volleyball crown is as tight as can be. Patriot (14-9) holds first at 7-1 in district play, with Battlefield (14-5) and Gainesville (13-5) both 8-2 and breathing down its neck with the district tournament starting Oct. 24. Second-year Battlefield coach Steve Davis doesn’t see much difference among the three contenders. “We’ve lost to Patriot, we’ve lost to Gainesville, but at the same time, I’d feel very confident playing Patriot or Gainesville or anybody else within the region,” Davis said. The Bobcats swept the Cardinals on Sept. 3 and in a tournament on Sept. 21, then fell in four sets on Sept. 26. They beat the Pioneers on Sept. 12 before fall-
