Police: 2 killed in single-vehicle crash near University Boulevard

A 49-year-old woman and her two young sons died Friday when a fire tore through their Woodbridge home. The bodies of Sameena Begum, 49, and her two boys, ages 13 and 8, were recovered from the home early Friday afternoon, according to Master Police Officer Renee Carr, a Prince William County police spokeswoman. The victims’ bodies were taken to the state medical examiner’s office and identified just after 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 4. The father and husband of the victims was at work during the fire, according to Assistant Prince William County Fire Chief Matt Smolsky. The cause of the fire remained under investigation late Friday afternoon but “the deaths do not appear to be suspicious,” Carr said. Three other people who were living in the basement of the home managed to escape the fire without injury, Smolsky said. The two-story home, located in the 15700 block of Piedmont Place, was completely engulfed in flames when firefighters were called by neighbors at about 5:50 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 4, Smolsky said. Crews immediately conducted an aggressive attack on the fire and initiated a search for occupants inside, but the intensity of the fire — and the collapse of the second floor — complicated their efforts, Prince William County Fire Marshal Tom Jarman said in a press briefing

A Sterling man and a Woodbridge woman have died of injuries they suffered in a singlevehicle crash at Interstate 66 and University Boulevard, according to police. Alfredo Rodolfo Sobrero, 90, of Sterling, and Liliana Nora Loschiavo Sierra, 67, of Woodbridge, were passengers in a 2023 Audi Q5 that struck a concrete barrier at the end of the I-66 ramp onto University Boulevard at about 2:10 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 1, according to Master Police Officer Renee Carr, a Prince William County police spokeswoman. Sobrero and Sierra were both taken to a nearby hospital, where they later died, Carr said. The driver of the car, a 75-yearold Sterling man, was also taken to the hospital for treatment but is expected to survive, Carr said. Police determined the driver, who was traveling west on I-66 in the express lanes, took the exit toward University Boulevard. As the vehicle neared the end of the ramp, the driver did not turn onto University Boulevard; rather, the car continued straight through the intersection, crossing all travel lanes before slamming into the concrete barrier, Carr said. Both the driver and the front-seat passenger were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact police at 703-792-6500.

Firefighters, police and an ATF team gather outside a Woodbridge house where three people, a 49-year-old mother and her two young sons, were killed in an early morning fire on Friday, Oct. 4. outside the home Friday morning. The home is located in the Cardinal Ridge subdivision off Cardinal Drive, just behind the Montclair subdivision. Prince William County firefighters, police and a fire investigation team with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives had converged on the home as of about 10 a.m. Friday morning to search for the three family members and to investigate the cause of the fire. The involvement of the law-enforcement agencies, however, does not mean

the fire is being considered a crime scene, Smolsky said. The ATF and the police department are routinely involved in fire investigations when people are missing because they have additional resources, Smolsky said. “This scene is very active, requiring an in-depth investigation to determine the events that led up to this tragedy,” Smolsky said. “This has become a joint investigation with the county police department since the deaths were unattended.”

Woman charged with DUI after striking a pedestrian A Manassas woman was charged with driving under the influence after a man was struck by a vehicle and seriously injured while walking along Lomond Drive in Manassas, according to police. Officers responded to a crash in the 9500 block of Lomond Drive, which is in the Loch Lomond area of Manassas, at 1:35 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6. They determined a vehicle struck a 26-year-old pedestrian as well as two parked vehicles, according to Master Police Officer Renee Carr, a Prince William County police spokeswoman. The pedestrian initially left the area

and was found by officers with serious injuries to his upper body. He was treated at an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, Carr said in a news release. Police allege Marta Alicia Molina Morales, 31, of Manassas, was intoxicated when her vehicle allegedly struck the pedestrian and two parked vehicles, the release said. Morales has been charged with maiming while driving under the influence, a felony. She was released from jail while awaiting a court hearing, according to court records.

NEWS ELECTION 2024

Candidates for mayor spar on issues by C her M uzyk

Staff Writer

Two candidates for the City of Manassas’ top elected post differed in a debate over the quality of city schools, whether to move forward with the controversial Va. 28 bypass and whether the city council is on the right track with spending and taxes. Incumbent Mayor Michelle Davis-Younger, a Democrat, is seeking a second term and faces Republican XiaoYin “Tang” Byrom in the Nov. 5 election. Their only debate was held Tuesday, Oct. 1 at the Manassas Museum and hosted by the Prince William Chamber of Commerce. Davis-Younger, 55, a Manassas native, has a master’s in business administration from Strayer University and owns a human resources consulting firm. Davis-Younger served two years on the Manassas City Council before being elected Manassas’s first woman, person of color and Democratic mayor in 2020. During Davis-Younger’s first term, the city took several steps aimed at redeveloping aging areas, spurring new economic development and providing better services for city residents. “I am running for mayor to see through the amazing work that me and the council have been doing for the last four years,” Davis-Younger said. “There is just no way I can stop now.” Byrom, 59, immigrated to the U.S. from Taiwan as a teenager and became a citizen in 1991. She has a bachelor’s degree in art from Auburn University and owns Tang’s Alterations Bridal and Bespoke in Manassas. Without explicitly criticizing any city council decisions, Byrom said Tuesday she is running for mayor because she “can no longer stand by while the city is going in the wrong direction.” She said voters have told her they want lower taxes and better schools. In 2023, the city government purchased the Olde Towne Inn, an older hotel in downtown Manassas, for $5.75 million with plans to redevelop the site. In early 2024, the city’s independent economic development authority bought the Manassas Shopping Center

A few weeks later, the city council announced it would purchase the former Marsteller Middle School property and its surrounding 20 acres for $11 million. The council plans to develop that building into a community center with athletic fields and a new fire station surrounding it. Va. 28 bypass While Byrom said she supports construction of the Va. 28 bypass, Davis-Younger said more work needs to be done with regional partners before a decision is made. Officials have been studying a 3.5mile extension of Godwin Drive to create a bypass that would reconnect with Va. 28 near the Fairfax County line. The idea is to reroute traffic away from Old Town Manassas and ease congestion on the existing roadway. The bypass would cost more than $300 million and would require razing between 50 and 70 homes in mostly Hispanic neighborhoods. Davis-Younger said she’s been discussing the project with her counterparts in Prince William and Fairfax counties and said the bypass is at a “standstill right now.” “It’s one major thing that I know will help us ease congestion in the city, so, I will continue those relationships and discussions,” Davis-Younger said. Byrom said she supports the bypass as long as families who lose their homes are “well taken care of.”

“Three hundred or so people have to be moved, but that’s going to clear up the traffic for … thousands of people who go through the City of Manassas each day,” Byrom said.

Schools Asked to give the Manassas City Public Schools a grade, Byrom said they rated a “D minus,” and said she will work with the new school board to ensure schools improve. She said people don’t want to move to the city because “the schools are bad.” “We will work hard together to change the students,” Byrom said. “We don’t want them to have their hands out. We want them to have hands up. We need to bring discipline, respect and responsibility back to school. No excuses.” Davis-Younger said the city’s schools are “doing well,” and touted trade and STEM programs like the upcoming Aviation Academy at Metz Middle School. “We’re already partnering with the major employers in the city. Our students are getting our jobs, and our workforce is one to be reckoned with,” Davis-Younger said.

Amazon pays $53.5 million for mid-county site Colchester Industrial Park rezoned to allow 3 data centers by P eter C ary Contributing Writer

More Amazon data centers are likely coming to the mid-county area, as a company affiliated with the tech giant recently paid $53.5 million — about $1 million an acre — for most of the 64acre Colchester Industrial Park near Dumfries and Minnievillle roads, according to public records. The purchase doubles Amazon’s presence in a new mid-county data center corridor. It recently bought Parsons Business Park, a former landscaping outlet also recently rezoned for data centers, which is 2 miles to the north. The purchases would put the number of Amazon-owned data centers in

A company affiliated with Amazon has purchased the Colchester Industrial Park near Dumfries and Minnieville roads for about $1 million an acre. The area was rezoned for data centers in June. Northern Virginia at more than 50, according to maps and counts by several data center information services. In the latest purchase, Minnieville Capital Acquisitions LLC bought 16 of

21 parcels in the Mid-County Industrial Park. The Prince William Board of County Supervisors rezoned the properties in June for three data center buildings up to 95 feet tall, plus a substation.

The company may be acquiring the final five parcels through sales that are not yet recorded. Minnieville Capital Acquisitions uses the same Seattle post office box listed by Amazon Data Services Inc. on county tax records for the Parsons property. Amazon completed acquiring the three parcels underlying the Parsons property in June for $220 million. That area was rezoned in March to allow 85-foot-tall data center buildings. An Amazon spokesperson would not confirm the mid-county purchase, writing only that the company is “constantly evaluating new locations based on customer demand.” The Parsons and mid-county rezonings drew opposition from nearby residents who feared the noise, lighting and power implications from data centers nearby. Baxtel, a web company that aggregates tech information, maps 42 Amazon data center buildings in Prince William County and 135 in Virginia overall.

DATA CENTERS

Data centers use mailers, text messages to counter pushback by P eter C ary Contributing Writer

In response to increasing pushbacks, including what it calls misinformation, Virginia’s data center interests are fighting back with text messages and mailers touting the industry’s benefits. Prince William residents from Gainesville to Nokesville in recent weeks received fliers in their mailboxes and cellphone text messages from something called “Virginia Connects.” The notices cite the roles data centers play in entertainment, education, healthcare and business: “Data centers keep Virginians connected while driving economic growth and bringing substantial benefits to our local communities,” the messages say. Within days, they were met with a blast from data center opponents. The mailers “are attempting to convince families that we should be happy

to sacrifice our reliable energy, clean water, our natural and historic resources, our pocketbooks and our peaceful communities to support global technology,” wrote Elena Schlossberg, president of the Coalition to Protect Prince William County, in an email to members on Sept. 27. The group has led the opposition to the Prince William Digital Gateway and other data center projects in the county. Still, the critics wondered, who is behind Virginia Connects and why now? The answer came from the Data Center Coalition, a Northern-Virgnia-based organization of 32 data center developers and owners plus a sprinkling of real estate developers. In a written statement to the Prince William Times, Josh Levi, the coalition’s president, said the group formed Virginia Connects to “educate and engage with Virginians about the benefits that data centers provide statewide and in local communities.” On Oct. 4, the Data Center Coalition’s

political action committee reported a $250,000 donation from STACK Infrastructure, a data center operator active in Prince William County. Amazon contributed another $25,000, according to the Virginia Public Access Project. Virginia Connects is a partnership of six data center developers and operators — Amazon Web Services, CloudHQ, CyrusOne, Equinix, STACK Infrastructure and Vantage Data Centers — plus another 23 organizations that support them. Those include four chambers of commerce from around Virginia, seven labor unions and several real estate developer associations, according to its website. Data centers, Levi said, boost a “larger ecosystem” of small businesses, service providers, supply chain and jobs” that matter to Virginians. The Prince William Chamber of Commerce is part of Virginia Connects. Its president, Bob Sweeney, said the coalition was the result of data center in-

terests’ frustration with what they saw as a surge in bad information. “It started out in response to a lot of misinformation about the data center industry, their motives, how noisy they really are, all that kind of stuff. There’s a lot of exaggeration, and, you know, an outright misinformation campaign out there,” he said. “Now, the movement has gotten big.” Sweeney said, however, that the Prince William Chamber of Commerce has to walk a fine line between supporting data centers and supporting residential development and the residents themselves. “Whether it’s noise ordinances or setbacks or height restrictions, all of those types of things are really, really important to the residential community, and, so, we’re toeing that line of trying to figure out what’s reasonable,” he said. Abortion a key issue in 10th District prosecuting doctors. “We need to take federal action to protect women’s bodily autonomy,” Subramanyam said. “What’s happening right now is not acceptable.”

Democrat Subramanyam faces Republican Clancy for Congress B y C her M uzyk Staff Writer

Mike Clancy, the Republican nominee in the 10th District congressional race, and state Sen. Suhas Subramanyam, his Democratic opponent, disagree on abortion rights and the outcome of the 2020 presidential election, among other issues, and each is seeking to energize their supporters in the campaign’s final weeks. Clancy, 67, and Subramanyam, 38, are vying to succeed U.S. Rep. Jennifer Wexton, a Democrat who is not seeking re-election due to health reasons. Clancy, who lives in Loudoun County, is an attorney who has worked at the U.S. Navy’s office of the general counsel and is now a senior business executive with a global technology company. He served on Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s technology and cybersecurity transition team and is a media commentator for Newsmax. “I think after the last four years, people are ready for a new direction and that’s been reflected in a lot of Republican voter enthusiasm,” Clancy said. He said his priorities are improving the economy, tightening border security and ensuring parents’ rights. Subramanyam, who is an attorney, a consultant and a volunteer firefighter, was a technology advisor for the Obama Administration. He is the first Hindu and Indian American to serve in the Virginia General Assembly, winning a seat in the House of Delegates in 2019 and the Senate in 2023. He represents part of the 10th District and was endorsed by Wexton. He said his top priorities are improving the economy, ensuring reproductive rights and protecting democracy. Subramanyam has pledged to fight for abortion rights, calling the aftermath of the Dobbs decision “dangerous.” He noted that some states have no exceptions for rape or incest and are

Election results Asked if former President Donald Trump lost the 2020 election, Clancy said: “Clearly (Joe) Biden’s been in office. He’s the president. I kind of don’t look back on that; I look forward.” But Clancy also claimed there was “wrongful election interference” in 2020 and cited “social media censorship” that he said might have changed votes. “I trust that most election offices did everything they could to make sure it was as accurate as possible,” he said. Subramanyam said Republicans are “pushed to question” election results to stay in line with Donald Trump. “When you question the results of an election because you lost, it undermines our democracy, and that’s really troubling,” he said. The 10th District includes all of Fauquier, Loudoun and Rappahannock counties, the cities of Manassas and Manassas Park, the northern half of Prince William County and parts of Fairfax County. Polling shows that Democrats have an advantage of between 4 and 6 percentage points in the district. The Cook Political Report characterizes the seat as “solid Democrat.” Subramanyam has so far brought in more than three times what Clancy raised, garnering $1.3 million compared to Clancy’s $422,000 as of June 30, the most recent campaign finance report available. Subramanyam said he hopes to win the district as Wexton did two years ago. Wexton won Loudoun County by nearly 16 percentage points and narrowly won Prince William. Subramanyam said he is also campaigning in Fauquier County, which Wexton lost in 2022 by more than 25 points to Republican Hung Cao. “We’ve been working really hard out in Fauquier County to make sure that we close the gaps,” Subramanyam said. Runaway cow turns up at Manassas airport by C her M uzyk

Staff Writer

A 400-pound cow was on the moove Thursday night. After escaping from her Bristow farm, the cow walked 2 miles and turned up at the Manassas City Regional Airport, where she was found outside the terminal. It’s unclear whether the cow, named “Firestorm,” had hoped to catch a flight to greener pastures. After some excitement and a few selfies with police and airport staff, Firestorm was safely transported back home. The 6-month-old calf was one of three cows Bristow farmer Jay Yankey, of Yankey Farms, recently moved to the farm animal display pen at his pickyour-own-pumpkin patch, which opens this weekend. After managing to find a loose panel in their new pen, all three cows broke out and went exploring while Yankey was away for the day at the State Fair of Virginia Youth Livestock Show in Doswell, Virginia. As Yankey drove home, friends notified him around 7 p.m. that his cows were “out on Bristow Road,” he said. By the time Yankey made it home, neighbors had rounded up two of the calves — “Dream Walker” and “Parker” — and corralled them back into their pen. But the third cow remained on the loose. Yankey said he rode around for a cou-

Yankey said he went home, unhooked

at the Manassas Regional Airport and would appreciate it if I could come extradite the prisoner back to my farm,” Yankey wrote on social media. Yankey hooked his trailer back up and headed over to the airport around 11 p.m., he said. Yankey said it likely took the cow several hours to walk from the pumpkin patch to the airport. She walked about 2 miles, through Kettle Wind Farm and likely through Broad Run, “which is about knee high right now,” he said, before finding her way onto the airport. Once at the airport, the calf “crossed both runways and made it to the terminal,” where airport staff cornered her, Yankey said. “When I got there, I found the night operations staff had penned the calf between two hangars and the exterior fence and had sealed off her only escape route with a big fuel truck,” Yankey wrote. She was lying on the grass and “looked very comfortable,” Yankey said. “This was a rather interesting event to say the least for Manassas City,” said Sgt. Brett Stumpf of the Manassas City Police. “Officer Storti, the responding officer, is an animal whisperer. It was fortunate he was on duty.” Reach Cher Muzyk at cmuzyk@fauquier.com

Voodoo Brothers brings Cajun back to Manassas by A lissa J ones Contributing Writer

Three partners who missed the New Orleans-style food of the former Okras restaurant have joined forces to bring Cajun and Creole flavors back to Old Town Manassas. In July, when Voodoo Brothers Cajun Creole opened, it was the culmination of a passion project by Luke Tamer, Antonio Escamilla and Sabastian Castelan. The trio, who all live in Manassas with their families, worked a combined

31 years at Okras, which closed in 2021 after 23 years in business. “After Okras closed, we were missing the Cajun food,” Tamer said. “And since we all worked so well together and considered ourselves brothers in this new venture, we decided on the name Voodoo Brothers.” Tamer, Escamilla and Castelan knew the cuisine well but wanted to get a fresh perspective and bring a new authentic experience to downtown Manassas while also reviving the good memories of the beloved Okras. So, they traveled to New

Orleans and spent three days learning, exploring and researching how to combine authentic Creole and Cajun food with the New Orleans ambiance. They also hired Robison to help them. Among Voodoo Brothers signature dishes are shrimp and grits, red beans and rice and jambalaya. The long-term plan is to expand VooDoo Brothers to bring the concept to other locations in northern Virginia. Reach Alissa Jones at news@fauquier. com

OPINION GUEST OPINION

Prince William County must do better to preserve African American history On Sept. 17, the Prince William Board of County Supervisors approved yet another data center — this time on land tied to my family’s history. My family’s roots in Prince William County go back to my fifth-greatgrandmother, Kate, who was enslaved but freed in 1792. In 1856, Kate’s granddaughter, Susan Gaskins, bought over 80 acres in western Prince William County. Later, Susan’s son, Frank, and grandson, James, started the Manassas Colored Horse Show in 1903 in response to Jim Crow racism. It became a major event along the East Coast, offering a place for Black riders who were excluded from white horse shows. I’ve spent years sharing this history to keep the legacy alive, but during a recent board meeting, I heard many inaccuracies. For example, Supervisor Tom Gordy claimed he only learned about my family from the developer. This history didn’t come from some developer — it came from me and my family. As I sat there, it felt like they

were giving credit to people who had nothing to do with it, while I had all the information they needed. It felt like the board was ignoring the truth Joann Gaskins and my family and favoring developers over African American history. I used to own the land they’re developing on Wellington Road. When I sold it, I was told it would go to George Mason University. I believed that the sale would help preserve the Gaskins’ history, cemetery and racetrack, and that it would be developed in a way that benefited the community. I even requested a statue and other tributes to honor the land’s past. But when the land was resold for a data center, I wasn’t sure what would happen next. If I had known the land would be used as a data center, I never would have sold my property.

Two of my family’s cemeteries have been disturbed by data center construction. Workers building the Iron Mountain data center disturbed the mandatory buffer and pumped dirty construction water toward the cemetery. While the county said they would protect the cemetery, I’ve been left out of the conversations and haven’t seen any real actions to protect it. Meanwhile, they’re still building. Then someone associated with the data center construction cut down trees and turned over tombstones, leaving the other cemetery in disrepair. Despite the county’s promise to clean up the site, all they did was put up a fence, leaving debris and damage from the water being pumped over my ancestors’ graves. The Prince William Board of County Supervisors should have made sure Stack data centers followed through on the plans we discussed for an interpretive site honoring the Manassas Colored Horse Show grounds. Now, with a second proposal coming up

for rezoning — NVA05C — there’s an opportunity to do just that. Instead of just adding a simple, unusable trail, they need to build the interpretive horse stall with a statue of my great-grandfather, Frank, holding a horse’s reins. Inside, there should be historical information about the racetrack and my family, along with a pull-off area for visitors. This isn’t just about my family’s legacy. It’s about how Black history, like mine, has been overlooked again and again, just like in Thoroughfare, Pageland and the Settlement. This trend needs to change. Prince William County must restore my ancestors’ graves and stop the data centers from erasing our important African American history. Joann Gaskins is a resident of Prince William County and a direct descendant of the founders of the Manassas Colored Horse Show Association, which operated in the Wellington area of Manassas from 1903 through the 1930s.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

No more delays for the PW Digital Gateway The Prince William Digital Gateway is poised to become an important part of Prince William County’s economic and technological future. There was a long debate over the last two years, in this forum and others, governmental reviews and hearings that went on and on. The matter was seemingly settled by a vote of the Prince William Board of County Supervisors in 2023. Prince William County would finally move ahead. Prince William County was ready to enjoy the benefits of new jobs, in both technology and construction, higher tax revenue that gives homeowners some tax relief and more. But then, a small group of opponents filed a fruitless lawsuit to restart the fight that the vote should have settled, and the potential benefits of the Digital Gateway were put on hold. Enough already. Let’s all agree to please put an end to the needless delays and these tactics of dragging a positive project through the courts. It’s time to move ahead with building the Prince William Digital Gateway that will significantly help the county. – David Seyer, Manassas

Lots of questions about paying panhandlers Suppose that Prince William County agrees to pay panhandlers to pick up litter along the roadways instead of asking for money. What would prevent panhandlers from double-dipping by doing both? Will panhandlers be licensed? Probably illegal to do so! Will Prince William County or the panhandlers be responsible for collecting and paying county, commonwealth and federal taxes? Virginia’s minimum wage is $12 an hour. From what I understand, panhandlers collect about $200 a day. How many hours

is the county willing to pay panhandlers so that after-tax take-home pay is at least this much? Well, I’m retired and would like to participate and can guarantee that I will never panhandle! There are probably 10 neighbors who would like to join my crew! Where do I sign up? Within a year or two, courts could likely require Prince William County to provide inclement weather gear, family hospitalization, vacation, sick leave, maternity leave, childcare, cell phones, bereavement leave,

high-risk working condition bonuses, health insurance, periodic pay raises, etc. Are panhandling stations first-come, first-served or assigned by a yet to be created panhandling board? How much will it cost taxpayers to pay panhandlers, added county personnel and facilities expansion? How would this program benefit tax paying companies and residents? – Andrew Perlik, Nokesville

Vindman honored his Army oath, is the right choice for Congress Virginia’s 7th Congressional District voters face two choices for their next congressman. Derrick Anderson and Eugene Vindman both served as U.S. Army officers. They swore on entering military service to “support and defend the Constitution of The United States.” They were taught the Army’s core values of loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and personal courage — values that shape, or should shape, a soldier’s character. Eugene Vindman honored his Army oath

and values. He demonstrated personal moral courage when he alerted authorities that President Donald Trump likely broke federal law when he tried to extort Ukraine’s president over critical military supplies. Vindman reported Trump’s actions as the law required, and Trump retaliated. Derrick Anderson seems to put Trump’s endorsement above the Constitution he swore to defend. Eugene Vindman never deviated from his

oath and continues to live by it today. Derrick Anderson abandoned his oath as the price of admission to MAGA, choosing fealty to Trump over fidelity to his country. Next January, Vindman or Anderson will enter the House of Representatives, swearing to an oath identical to the one they took in the Army. Eugene Vindman honored his oath and deserves your vote. – Dennis Kaufman, Unionville, Virginia

SPORTS BRENTSVILLE FOOTBALL

Tigers fall behind 16-0, win 50-35 Beckman, Richards shine as Brentsville improves to 3-3 by P eter B rewington

Sports Editor Emeritus

The loud boom from the percussion cannon the Liberty High football program fires to celebrate each score sounded three times in the early part of Friday’s contest with visiting Brentsville. As the smoke from the last blast drifted downfield, it was shaping up to be a joyous Homecoming for the hungry Eagles; they led Brentsville 16-0 early in the second quarter and seemed headed for their first win of the 2024 campaign. Brentsville coach Loren White was stupefied, wondering what was going on. “I don’t know what team got off the bus,” he said, calling his team “groggy. We clicked in from that point. I never want to see that first-quarter team again in my life.” The Tigers (3-3) found their mojo over the final 33 minutes, roaring to a 50-35 victory to keep the Eagles winless at 0-6. In an impressive recovery, the Tigers exploded for 23 consecutive points and four touchdowns in the second quarter. Junior quarterback Samuel Richards hit senior Wyatt Vonderhaar on a 10-yard TD for the Tigers’ first points, and Richards’ two-point conversion run made it 16-8. Powerful sophomore running back Sawyer Beckman scored on a 6-yard run, and another Richards two-point run tied it at 16-16 with 3:38 left in the second quarter. Eighty-nine seconds later, the Tigers stormed to a 23-16 lead, as Richards connected with sophomore Charles McCullough for a 63-yard TD. And, halftime was still 2:09 away. Although Liberty tied it at 23-23, the Tigers scored four more TDs to win comfortably. Beckman finished with three rushing TDs; Richards threw for two TDs and ran for two more — loud

Led by junior quarterback Sam Richards (No. 9), the Brentsville Tigers are 3-3 and playing well lately. announcements that they’d become key offensive weapons. Beckman called it his breakout game. “It was good. I think I’ll start to get the ball a lot more,” said the 5-11, 195-pound senior who is often rotated with speedy 150-pound Aaron Patterson. Beckman joked about his style. “I’m more of a power guy, I wouldn’t call myself shifty; I just try to run it down the middle,” he said. “Sawyer had the advantage in the way we were running tonight. It was a big back’s dream. We feed No. 3 and go from that point,” White said. White was also pleased with Richards. The signal caller showed running savvy, drilled some big passes and has looked more confident as the successor to graduated legend Caleb Alexander, now playing at Christopher Newport University.

“Sam Richards clicked. He’s started seeing it,” White said. “It’s good to see him grow week to week to week. He makes our offense explosive. To put up 50 points feels really good.” Brentsville, which is reloading after three straight Class 3 Region B championships, has come a long way since its season-opening 42-0 loss to Sherando and now appears headed for the playoffs for the 10th straight year. After falling to Sherando (6-0) on Aug. 30, the Tigers lost to James Wood 16-15. An important 38-35 win over Millbrook was followed by a 41-0 loss to Handley, leaving the Tigers at 1-3. Now, after downing Meridian 28-14 and Liberty the last two weeks, and with their Class 4 opponents out of the way, Brentsville appears ready to roll. Although nothing is certain, the Ti-

gers could carry a five-game winning streak and 6-3 record into their season-ending matchup with local heavyweight Kettle Run (5-0) Nov. 8. The Tigers downed Kettle Run twice last year in two memorable matchups, upsetting the then-undefeated Cougars in the regular season finale, then eliminating them in the region semifinals. White laughed when asked if he was thinking about Kettle Run. “Oh no, no, no. It comes when it comes. I see us as a good group starting to grow,” White said. Beckman is bullish on his team’s prospects overall. The Tigers host Warren County (1-4) on Thursday at 7 p.m. “I think we’re starting to pick it up and take it to another level. I think we’re going to keep stacking up these wins,” Beckman said.
