Voters rejected data center proliferation, activists say By Anya Sczerzenie Times Staff Writer
While many local activists see incumbent County Board Chair Ann Wheeler’s loss to Deshundra Jefferson in last week’s primary as a clear rebuke of the proliferation of data centers in western Prince William County, county supervisors are divided on the voters’ message. Wheeler, 61, who was vying for a second term, raised at least five times as much as Jefferson, 47, a political newcomer. Wheeler’s campaign coffers were largely fueled by data center interests, such as the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, which supports the data center industry because of the jobs it creates for its electrician members. That’s why Jefferson’s 5-point win was widely seen as a surprise upset, even to those who supported her. “You know when you hope and pray, but you don’t think something could really happen? That’s how I felt [when Jefferson won],” said Elena Schlossberg, executive director of the Coalition to Protect Prince William County, a group that advocates for the preservation of the county’s rural crescent. The group led a failed attempt to recall Wheeler from office over her support for the Prince William Digital Gateway, which would allow a massive data center corridor on about 1,600 rural acres adjacent to the Manassas National Battlefield Park. “I was looking up to the universe, saying ‘we really need this one,’ and the universe delivered.” Schlossberg has been an outspoken opponent of the PW Digital Gateway as well as the Devlin

Schlossberg says Wheeler’s loss was due to her support of what she calls “the worst kind of planning imaginable” -- building data centers near homes and schools, despite residents’ objections, as well as the county’s overreliance on data centers instead of a variety of commercial development. “I hope that other supervisors stop following her losing strategy,” Schlossberg said. “People didn’t like what she was doing to their communities. ” See WHEELER, page 2

Rosie’s Gaming Emporium wants to try its luck in Manassas Park, but already the city’s top leaders say they are against its plan to open a gambling outlet in the Manassas Park Shopping Center on Centreville Road. Churchill Downs Incor- Manassas Park porated, Rosie’s Gaming Mayor Jeanette Rishell Emporium’s parent company, announced on Friday, June 23 an effort to collect the 450 signatures necessary to get a referendum on the Nov. 7 ballot seeking Manassas Park voters’ approval to open a new Rosie’s Gaming Emporium in Manassas Park. In the days since, Manassas Park Mayor Jeanette Rishell (D), Vice Mayor Alanna Mensing (D) and City Manager Laszlo Palko have all voiced opposition to the plan. Rishell opposes bringing any form of gambling into Manassas Park. “We are a family-oriented and a safe little city that by nature is welcoming to all families and residents, and I fear that positive character will change,” Rishell told the Prince William Times. “Also, I do not consider bringing in gambling to be a good example for our children.” Mensing said she doesn’t support bringing gambling to Manassas Park in general but said she was open to an initial plan, quietly hatched by Palko back in 2019, to bring a larger Rosie’s entertainment complex to Manassas Park’s new downtown area dubbed, Park Central. Residents call for a moratorium on data centers
Schlossberg was one of about a dozen local activists who came to the Tuesday, June 27 board of supervisors’ meeting to voice their support for Jefferson’s and Supervisor Jeanine Lawson’s primary wins and to ask the board to put the brakes on new data center developments. Lawson, 53, won the GOP nomination to run for board chair over Kenn Knarr, 60, by nearly 63 points. Knarr, a retired Marine and former schoolteacher turned defense contractor, owns a home and land in the PW Digital Gateway planning area that’s under contract to sell to Compass Datacenters. “If you add up (Jefferson’s and Lawson’s) votes, there is a 24.8% difference between them for (pro) data center versus the limited data center candidates,” John Lyver, a Heritage Hunt resident and retired NASA analyst said during the meeting. “Ten points is considered a mandate; five points is considered significant. So, a 25-point difference? The people have spoken.” “I’m asking for this board to put a pause on data center development until the new board takes office in January and to be transparent and disclose the locations and numbers of current data center projects that are already approved and being constructed in Prince William County,” Rachel Ellis, a Gainesville resident, said during the June 27 board meeting. “I’m asking this board to restore trust and listen to the hundreds of voices that have spoken against the Digital Gateway and Devlin Technology Park. People in Prince William are awake, and we are engaged.” Though many speakers at the board meeting attributed Jefferson’s win to data centers, most of them live in the western part of the county where data centers have had a heavy impact. Jefferson appears to have won in precincts across the county, even in eastern Prince William, where data centers were not a top-ofmind issue for primary voters.
Wheeler’s, Boddye’s reactions
Supervisor Kenny Boddye, D-Occoquan, who has been a swing vote on data center projects in the past, said he was surprised Jefferson won. “Deshundra Jefferson did have a lot of grassroots support and volunteers, but Ann did have a lot more money to communicate; she had a lot more of a traditional campaign structure,” he said. Boddye said that he thinks Jefferson was elected for two main reasons. “I think it speaks to the support on the Democratic side to elect candidates of color; she is poised to be the first Black and Black woman chair,” Boddye said of Jefferson. “And I think it does speak to the need to take a look at how we are working with the data center industry to site data centers, and how their impacts affect communities.” While Wheeler has voted in favor of controversial data center projects such as the PW Digital Gateway,
Deshundra Jefferson Jefferson has voiced her opposition to the project because of nearby historic sites and the possible effects on the Occoquan Reservoir, which provides drinking water to much of eastern Northern Virginia. Wheeler declined to comment on whether she will attempt to bring the PW Digital Gateway, Devlin and John Marshall Technology Park, proposed for Va. 55 near Tyler Elementary School, to a vote before the new board is elected. Wheeler also said she rejects the idea that Jefferson won because of anti-data center sentiment. “To attribute Tuesday’s outcome only to data centers is to not fully understand the intricacies of the changes that have occurred in Prince William County over the last three and a half years,” Wheeler said in a statement. “There has been a shift in the balance of power, with many new people finally having a seat at the table.” Like Wheeler, some members of the supervisors believe that the reasons for Jefferson’s election were more complex. “If (data centers) were the only issue, we’re going to be in for a real reckoning, because the county is so much more than just data centers,” said Supervisor Victor Angry, D-Neabsco, a chief proponent of the PW Digital Gateway. On primary election day, however, Angry said the election opened his eyes to issues with data centers. “One thing I have learned, through a lot of discussion, is that the issue with data centers is getting them away from residences and schools,” Angry said. Supervisor Bob Weir, R-Gainesville, who attributed his win in a February special election to anger over a proliferation of data centers, said the results show Jefferson’s win is about more than just data centers. “What surprised me more than anything else was how well Jefferson ran against Wheeler in the east,” Weir said. “I thought it would take an overwhelming victory in the west, and it didn’t, which tells me it’s more than just data centers. It’s crime; it’s not listening to the public; it’s attitude; it’s a variety of things.”
Jefferson: Suggestions she won because she’s Black are ‘extraordinarily racist’
Jefferson herself says she does not want to be seen as just an anti-data-center candidate, and she attri-
butes her win to a variety of “kitchen-table” issues that affect people throughout the county. “The county is at a crossroads; they’re looking for someone to lead them forward,” Jefferson said in an interview Tuesday. “It’s not just data centers; it’s land use in general. There are precincts I won in the east that don’t have the impact of data centers, but there are other things they’re worried about—cost of living, safety. I feel like those things combined helped propel me to victory.” Jefferson also called the idea that she won because voters want to see the county elect its first Black county board chair “extraordinarily racist.” “Because they’re basically saying that all the doors I knocked on didn’t make a difference,” Jefferson said. “Obviously the people who are saying this don’t believe in diversity; they don’t believe that Black people can accomplish great things.” Bill Wright, of Gainesville, has been active in the fight against the PW Digital Gateway since the fall of 2021 because he objects to a major data center hub, now projected to be between 28 and 34 buildings, next to the Manassas National Battlefield and Heritage Hunt, the over-55 community where he has lives.
‘Stunned disbelief’ over Jefferson’s upset win
Wright, a Democrat, said he met with Wheeler in late 2021 to encourage her not to support the PW Digital Gateway or allow data centers too close to homes and schools. When that didn’t work – and after it came to light that Wheeler and her husband had tens of thousands invested in companies tied to data centers – Wright got involved in the effort to recall Wheeler from office. Then, after Jefferson announced her candidacy in January, Wright was an early supporter and volunteered to be her campaign treasurer. In an interview last week, Wright said the campaign was mostly a grassroots effort. Jefferson did not have a campaign manager but instead relied on Wright and others involved in the Wheeler recall effort, or those upset about data centers, to encourage their friends and neighbors to vote for Jefferson. A few dozen like-minded residents wrote postcards for Jefferson and were involved in what Wright
called a “daisy-chain-email” strategy to get the word out about Jefferson’s campaign. Together, they cobbled together enough donations to pay for three targeted mailers in support of Jefferson. Still, Jefferson raised less than $70,000 for her campaign and was outspent by Wheeler by at least five to one. That’s why Wright said he and Jefferson reacted with “stunned disbelief” when it became clear that Jefferson had unseated Wheeler. “We really didn’t think we were gonna win,” Wright said. “And when we actually won, it was like, we just really couldn’t get our heads around it. It took a day to sink in.” Wright said the energy behind Jefferson’s campaign came mostly from western Prince William residents who were upset about several controversial data center projects, including the new “Village Technology Park,” which was approved in 2021 but just began construction last fall. A few weeks before the election, residents watched as huge, 70-foot data center walls popped up just yards away from the townhomes at Village Place, off Va. 55 in Gainesville. “What I think had a significant impact in this outcome of this election is what I call the angry HOAs, the people that were really being sold down the river by this data center development,” Wright said. “They had a higher turnout. They were energized. They were probably the early voters.” More than 14,000 votes – about 35% of the 39,285 ballots cast in both the Republican and Democratic primaries for board chair – were cast during the weeks of early voting. Those votes have not yet been assigned back to their precincts, so it’s not yet possible to know where Jefferson received her strongest base of support. For eastern Prince William residents, the push to elect Jefferson was not so much about data centers as it was about a more general feeling that county leaders are more responsive to deep-pocketed developers than they are to residents’ concerns, Wright said. “It wasn’t necessarily data centers. It’s that the elected officials are not working for the people,” he said. Jill Palermo contributed to this report. Reach the writers at news@ fauquier.com HOW TO REACH US

Nikki Baldwin wins GOP state Senate primary by 2 votes But her opponent, Maria Martin, said she’ll ask for a recount By Cher Muzyk
Times Staff Writer
With 100% of the votes counted as of Monday afternoon, Nikki Baldwin remained two votes ahead of her opponent Maria Martin in the Republican primary for the 29th District state Senate race, winning her party’s nomination. But the race is headed for a recount, Martin said Monday night. Baldwin, a U.S. Navy veteran and singer-songwriter, was two votes ahead of Martin, an artist and author, on Saturday, when all of the votes, including absentee and provisional ballots, were counted in Prince William County. On Monday, the vote totals remained the same because there were no Republican provisional ballots cast in Stafford County, according to Stafford County Registrar Anna Hash. Baldwin garnered 2,605 of the votes cast in the race, or 50.02%, compared to Martin’s 2,603 votes, which represented 49.98% of the ballots cast. Baldwin said Monday afternoon

Martin added that she’s grateful for all the voters who came out to vote in the primary. “It is the tightest it could be,” Martin said. “A lot of people trusted in both of us.” See GOP PRIMARY, page 19

McPike ekes out a 50-vote win in Dems’ state Senate primary By Cher Muzyk and Hunter Savery Times Staff Writers
State Sen. Jeremy McPike appears to have narrowly fended off a primary challenge from Del. Elizabeth Guzman in a race that came down to absentee and provisional ballots counted on Saturday, June 24. With 100% of votes counted as of Saturday afternoon -- including all mail-in, absentee and provisional ballots -- McPike came out ahead of Guzman by 53 votes. McPike garnered 6,320 votes to Guzman’s 6,267. McPike’s tally amounts to 50.21% of the ballots cast, while Guzman garnered 49.79%, according to results released by the Prince William Office of Elections Saturday afternoon. The difference between the two candidates’ vote count was just .42%, meaning the race could have gone to a recount that would have been free to either candidate, Prince William County General Registrar Eric Olsen said Saturday morning. Guzman issued a statement Saturday afternoon conceding the hard-fought race to McPike. She thanked her supporters and urged them to vote for McPike in the No-

The plan was “to redevelop a larger site in the downtown (area) to ensure downtown success and to generate between $7 to $9 million in annual tax revenues from a hotel, Rosie’s and entertainment venue,” Palko said. “This was something that would drastically help our economy, and even though it does not match the vision I hold for our city, I was willing to see how it was viewed by the public in a series of town halls, and ultimately, a referendum,” Mensing said. But Rosie’s changed course sometime in the last several months, Palko said, after Churchill Downs, the owner of the Kentucky Derby, bought Rosie’s Gaming Emporium from the Virginia-based Colonial Downs. Churchill Downs scrapped plans for a new Rosie’s entertainment complex in the city’s downtown area and, instead, sought an existing building for gaming facility without the hotel and entertainment space. Rosie’s signed an option to lease the space now occupied by “The Furniture House” if Manassas Park voters approve the ballot referendum on Nov. 7. “Unfortunately, Churchill Downs signed a lease with the Manassas Shopping Center without our knowledge or blessing,” Mensing said. “It came out of nowhere and was very shocking and disappointing that they would proceed without coordinating with the jurisdiction they are looking to work with,” Palko said.” “Even more disappointing, they have no plans to spruce up or make improvements to the aged shopping plaza,” Mensing said. “The lack of communication and trust between Churchill and the city is alarming to me, and I’m not sure I can support this venture.” Mark Hubbard, a Churchill Downs spokesman,
quarter of 2024, Hubbard said. Churchill Downs found the Manassas Park Shopping Center to be “well-suited” for a Rosie’s gambling outlet because it’s centrally located, accessible to tourists and provides ample parking, Hubbard said. “There have been ongoing and extensive conversations with the city,” Hubbard said, noting that other Manassas Park City Council members support the project. City Council members Michael Carrera (I) and Laura Hampton (D) confirmed to the Prince William Times that they support Rosie’s Gaming Emporium coming to Manassas Park. City Council members Yesenia Amaya (D) and Darryl Moore (D) did not return an email requesting comment. The Rosie’s Gaming Emporium in Manassas Park is expected to generate about $1.5 million in annual tax revenue for the city and create about 150 new jobs. Those benefits were enough to win Carrera’s support, he said Monday. “The major benefit will be increased tax revenues that will assist with additional city services, school funding and property tax reduction,” Carrera said, noting that Manassas Park residents face the highest real estate tax rate in Virginia. Earlier this month, the council adopted a new budget for fiscal year 2024 that cut the tax rate 2 cents from $1.45 to $1.43. Still, residential real estate tax bills are expected to rise about $256 next year, Palko said. “We will put a very nice façade on the location, and we will enhance security,” Hubbard said. The security improvements will include additional lighting and security personnel. About 25% of the new jobs created will be dedicated to security, Hubbard said. Getting a referendum on the ballot in smaller localities such as Manassas Park requires only a fraction of the signatures that would be required
®
of June 1, according to the Virginia Department of Elections, meaning the petition needs only 450 signatures. Churchill Downs “probably chose Manassas Park because our population is smaller than a county, and it would cost them less to propagandize residents prior to the referendum,” Rishell said. Hubbard said Churchill Downs is already assembling a team of paid canvassers who will go out into the community to collect signatures, hopefully completing the process by early August. Rishell said she was told by Churchill Downs that Rosie’s Manassas Park facility is planned to have between 250 and 350 slot-like machines, more than double the 160 machines allowed at the Dumfries Rosie’s Emporium. “If they do well, they have the potential to expand even more,” Rishell said, into other businesses in the shopping center. “Possibly 500 to 750 machines total if they think it can be sustained and successful,” Rishell said. “Even 250 to 350 is a large predatory operation, and not at all like the machines that are located in 7-Elevens and other stores, and certainly not the same as church bingo,” Rishell said. If the Prince William County Circuit Court verifies the voter signatures and OKs the referendum, the issue will go to voters on Nov. 7. “Manassas Park registered voters will make the final decision about whether or not to allow Rosie’s to operate in our city: a real-life example of democracy in action,” Hampton said. Palko said he still hopes Churchill Downs will reconsider opening in Manassas Park’s downtown area. “I hope they pivot back to the downtown, but it seems like we are stuck for the moment.” Reach Cher Muzyk at cmuzyk@fauquier.com

Fredericksburg man charged in Dumfries fatal double-shooting Death of 21-year-old Woodbridge man is county’s 12th homicide in 2023 Staff Reports A Fredericksburg man wanted in connection with a fatal double shooting in Dumfries last week turned himself into police on Tuesday and was charged with murder and other offenses in connection with the shooting death of a 21-yearold Woodbridge man, according to Prince William County police. Daniel Christopher Shannon, 33, of Fredericksburg, was being held without bond at the Prince William County Adult Detention Center on Tuesday, June 27 after being charged with multiple felonies in connection with fatal shooting of Jeremiah Quentin Deck, 21, of Woodbridge, and shooting a 23-year-old Dumfries man who was hospitalized, according to Master Police Officer Renee Carr, a Prince William County Police Department spokeswoman. The police investigation into the incident revealed that Shannon, Deck, the second victim and at least four other people were inside a home in the 1900 block of Fort Monroe Court, in the Williamstown-area of Dumfries, when an argument broke out among the three men. The men separated before Shannon allegedly went to the upper level

Tax revenue estimates for the PW Digital Gateway are exaggerated Updated financial studies performed by John Lyver, a Heritage Hunt resident and retired NASA analyst, show that financial benefits being marketed for the Digital Gateway are vastly exaggerated. A key point of Lyver’s detailed analysis is that the immense county costs of this project have not been considered. Imagine being on Shark Tank stating your profit would be the money you collect. You’d be laughed off the show because you did not consider COSTS. Yet the marketing hype for the PW Digital Gateway only considers revenue but not costs. In addition, the proposal would require Prince William County to purchase 350 acres of “parkland” scattered through the Digital Gateway. Now seriously, constructing 18 million square feet of data center space is equivalent to three
It’s time for QTS and Compass to pack it in
times the size of the Pentagon. It will be a noisy, gritty place during the 15-year construction phase. During the operational phase, there’d be the potential 24/7 noise of more than 30 huge data centers plus hundreds of trailer-truck sized diesel generators spewing noise and diesel particulates during routine testing. Adding the necessary 12 electric substations to support this project won’t help the noise or view. Taking costs into consideration, Lyver’s most recent study shows the PW Digital Gateway will not be profitable until 2051. The worst scenario of all? All that environmental havoc to build the largest data center alley in the world, for only a small fraction of the revenue being promoted. ALLY STOEGER Gainesville VA
Last week’s primary elections provided tangible feedback on the irresponsible data center development best exemplified by the brutish Prince William Digital Gateway. This proposal has been extraordinarily contentious since it first darkened our door. Citizens were horrified that government officials would promote a noxious industrial project of this scope in a sensitive urban watershed, sandwiched between a national park and a state forest, adjacent to a densely populated retirement community. It is the most spectacularly incompatible land use proposal in Prince William County history. Co-conspirators QTS and Compass Datacenters first tried to sneak this fiasco past us under the shroud of shady non-disclosure agreements. Then, they tried to shove it down our throats with the collaboration of co-opted government lackeys who ignored their own
constituents in favor of corporate benefactors. Next, they tried to con us with promises of parks they weren’t paying for featuring trails no one would walk on. The response to all their entreaties over the past sixteen months has been a consistent “go away.” The public is now delivering the same advice to the tone-deaf elected officials who have been carrying their water. It is abundantly clear that those who choose allegiance with QTS and Compass over their constituents will pay for it with their jobs and futures. Our question to QTS and Compass is: Are we getting through to you yet? You only have contingency contracts on the land along Pageland Lane, so cut your losses and go ply your trade elsewhere. For everyone’s sake. BILL WRIGHT Gainesville

Celebrating July 4th with a bang Parade, fireworks happening in Dale City, Manassas, Manassas Park By Jill Palermo
Times Staff Writer
Prince William County will mark the nation’s birthday with the annual Dale City Independence Day parade and July 4th celebrations in the City of Manassas and Manassas Park
Dale City parade and ‘fun day’
The Dale City Independence Day Parade, one of the largest in the commonwealth, will hold its 53rd annual parade on Tuesday, July 4. The parade will step off at 10 a.m. from Kirkdale Drive and will continue along Dale Boulevard to its terminus in the Dale City commuter lot at Center Plaza. As of Tuesday, June 27, there were 111 groups signed up to participate, according to longtime parade chair Ernestine Jenkins. Bishop Patrick Thomas from Dale City Christian Church is the grand marshal of this year’s parade, Jenkins said. The parade will also feature two high school marching bands, from Hylton and Gar-Field high schools, as well as the usual variety of Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops, local organizations and businesses, antique cars and, of course, local politicians. “Like we usually have, we’ll just have some of everything,” Jenkins said. Jenkins, the widow of the late Supervisor John Jenkins, has led organizing efforts for the parade for at least 38 years. Jenkins said she keeps at it because the parade is something people look forward to every year. “I love Dale city, and I love the people here, and it’s just exciting to see the kids … and everyone’s so excited,” Jenkins said. “I had somebody in Giant tell me the Fourth of July parade is the most fun thing of the year.” Jenkins said she is particularly thankful for the help she receives each year from the 11 organizations who work together to put on the parade. The groups include the VFW post 1503, the Dale City Volunteer Fire Department, the Dale City Lion’s Club, the Dale City Moose Lodge, the Woodbridge Elks Lodge, the Dale City Masonic Lodge 319, Hylton Boys and Girls Club, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 48, the John Paul Knights of Columbus from Holy Family Church, the Amer-
ican Legion and the Dale City Civic Association. “It’s just a togetherness, and it’s just so much fun,” Jenkins said of the parade. The parade committee will once again offer its traditional post-parade Family Fun Day at the Dale City commuter lot starting at 2 p.m. The event includes activities and games for kids, including tours of a medivac helicopter, Jenkins said.
Old Town Manassas celebration and fireworks
Old Town Manassas will celebrate Independence Day with one of the largest fireworks displays in Northern Virginia on Tuesday, July 4. The activities surround the Manassas Visitors’ Center in the Historic Train Depot, the Harris Pavilion and the Manassas Museum. There will be rides for the kids starting at 3 p.m. The rest of the fun, including a face painter, caricature artist, food concessions and novelty vendors, will begin at 4 p.m. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets and come early to get the best seats on the Manassas Museum lawn for the firework display, which starts at 9:15 p.m.
Manassas Park
Independence Day festivities in Manassas Park will be held on Tuesday, July 4, at Signal Hill Park located at 9300 Signal View Drive. There will be free shuttles to Signal Hill Park from both the VRE Station and City Hall starting at 5:30 p.m. Handicap accessible parking will be located inside Signal Hill Park. A variety of food trucks, including Speedy Pop, Snowie, Mimi’s Ice, Bangkok House and House of Ice Cream, will be available. Cash is recommended for ease of purchase. Fireworks are scheduled to begin at 9:15 p.m.
Quantico Marine Corps Base
The Marine Corps Base Quantico will hold its annual Independence Day celebration and fireworks show on Tuesday, July 4. The event is free and open to all Department of Defense cardholders and their immediate family members. The celebration begins at 3 p.m. on Lejeune Field with concessions, carnival rides, a live band and a DJ. The fireworks display will begin at 9 p.m. Parking will be available at the Lejeune Hall overflow lot, the large employee lot and small lot around the building.

When it comes to navigating the intricate world of real estate, one key decision can significantly impact the success of your buying or selling experience: choosing a Realtor. Here we will explore the reasons why engaging in the interview process with multiple Realtors is crucial for finding the right match and maximizing the chances of a successful real estate transaction.
Assessing compatibility and communication
Buying or selling a property involves a significant amount of collaboration and interaction between the Realtor and the client. By conducting interviews, individuals can gauge how well they connect with a particular agent, evaluate their listening skills and determine if they can effectively understand and address their unique needs and concerns. This process helps establish a foundation of trust and confidence, enabling clients to work harmoniously with their chosen Realtor throughout the transaction.
Evaluating experience and expertise
Each Realtor brings a distinct set of experiences, skills and areas of expertise to the table. Conducting interviews allows potential clients to delve into an agent’s track record and gauge their level of expertise in handling similar transactions. During the interview, clients can inquire about the agent’s years in the industry, their knowledge of the local market and their success rate in achieving desired outcomes for clients. By asking specific questions about their strategies, marketing plans and negotiation tactics, cli-
ents can gain insights into an agent’s capabilities and make an informed decision about who is best suited to represent their interests.
Comparing marketing and pricing strategies
Marketing plays a crucial role in attracting potential buyers and maximizing exposure for a property. By interviewing multiple agents, clients can assess the effectiveness of their marketing plans, including their use of online platforms, professional photography, virtual tours and open house events. Similarly, in the case of sellers, the interview process allows clients to evaluate an agent’s ability to accurately assess the value of their property and propose a competitive pricing strategy based on market conditions. By comparing the approaches of various agents, clients can choose the one who aligns with their goals and demonstrates the capability to generate optimal results. Interviewing multiple Realtors before making a final selection is a crucial step in finding the right match. By assessing compatibility, evaluating experience and expertise and comparing marketing and pricing strategies, potential clients can make an informed decision about which Realtor is best suited to their specific needs and goals. The interview process ensures that clients establish a strong working relationship with an agent who possesses the necessary skills, knowledge and communication style to guide them through a successful real estate transaction. Engaging the services of an experienced Realtor with local expertise is crucial for achieving success in real estate transactions. Ross Real Estate has been built on that premise. The agents at RRE have comprehensive market knowledge, the ability to navigate complex processes and extensive networks of resources that set them apart. In an industry where every decision carries significant financial implications, the value of an experienced Realtor should never be underestimated. When you do interview multiple agents, be sure one of them is from Ross Real Estate.

George William ‘Bill’ Smith
Dennis Wayne Mallette, 76 of Bealeton, VA passed away on Friday, June16th, 2023 after a valiant 19-month fight with cancer. He is survived by his wife of40 years, Brenda Martin Mallette; his sister Linda Marie Mallette and niece Melanie Lynn Mallette Walrath (husband, Scott & sons Tyler, Dylan & Foster) of Oswego, NY; and many cousins. He was the son of the late Bettie Mae Backus Mallette and Richard Justin Mallette and the grandson of Edna Lowry and William H. Backus, and Norman and Catherine Cloonan Mallette. He graduated from Oswego High School prior to enlisting in the Army. He served with the US Army Security Agency from 7/1/64 – 6/28/68 with much of his time being spent in Turkey and then Vietnam. Dennis was very patriotic and a lifetime member of the VFW Post 7728 in Morrisville, VA and a member of the American Legion Post #72 in Warrenton, VA. He was a proud member of the International Union of Elevator Constructors (IUEC Local 10) for 33 years. He spent most of his years working for Warfield and Sanford based in Washington, D.C. He loved his job and woke up each morning looking forward to going to work. He was also a volunteer fireman/EMT first in Leonardtown MD and finally in Gainesville/Haymarket, VA where he was elected Chief for one year. It was important for him to provide this service. He was an avid slow- pitch softball player and played for several teams over the years, most notably, The Washington Senators sponsored by William C. Smith and Warfield & Sanford (W&S). They traveled to California, Arizona, Florida, Richmond & Hagerstown and, of course, played locally. Sometimes he and Brenda were at the softball fields 4-6 times a week including tournaments. After softball he took up the game of golf and in 1989 he joined Fauquier Springs Country Club where he made so many new “golfing” friends AND had a hole-in-one. Dennis also loved to sing and he and his father used to “entertain” patrons at the local bars in Oswego, NY. Dennis Mallette was a wonderful man and his wife Brenda loves him very much. The family will receive friends on Friday, June 30 from 2:00 PM until the funeral service begins at 3:00 PM at Moser Funeral Home, Warrenton. Interment with military honors will be held on Monday, July 10 at 11:00 AM at Quantico National Cemetery. George William ‘Bill’ Smith, age 83, passed peacefully at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA on Saturday, June 24th, 2023. He was born on January 19th, 1940 in Washington DC, son of the late Edgar Seldon Smith and Ella Austin Riley Smith Freeman. Bill became a brick mason very early in his life as a teenager. This became his career until his retirement at age 62, after which, he continued to work part-time for Fauquier County Parks & Recreation. He loved this less strenuous work. He had land and a tractor to keep the fields, and he planted a garden every year. Bill was a ‘Jack of all trades’ and he could figure out the most complicated tasks. In his younger years, Bill belonged to the Fire Department Co. 7 and the Ruritans. He was a faithful member of Trinity United Methodist church in Catlett. He built the foundation for the parsonage and contributed a lot of work bricking the Sunday school wing addition. Before his retirement from the brick trade, Bill completed some intricate brick work at the Alfred Street Baptist church in Falls Church, VA. He bricked in a ‘time capsule’ the day the new addition was completed. He was proud to be there and help present the ‘key to the church’. This was his ‘crowning achievement’. Working with his hands was his greatest asset. He mowed the fields with his Farmal Tractor and gardening was delightful. Bill is survived by his loving wife, Nancy Lee Smith; daughter, Deborah Carol Smith; granddaughter, Rachel Courtney Clements Rinker & her husband, Jonathan; three great grandchildren, Ciara Beth, Tristin & Everleigh Rinker; Sister, Irene Grace ‘Penny’ Smith; and his brother, Frank L. Freeman & his wife, Carla and their three children, Father Justin Freeman, Jennifer Freeman and Clayton Freeman & his wife, Katie and their two sons, Cole & Samuel Freeman. In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by a daughter, Deidre Christina Smith. The family will receive visitors at Moser Funeral Home, 233 Broadview Ave. in Warrenton, VA on Friday, June 30th from 6 to 8 pm. A funeral service will be held in the Moser Funeral Home chapel on Saturday, July 1st at 2 pm followed by interment at Catlett cemetery in Catlett, VA. Online condolences may be made at www.moserfuneralhome.com.

Susan Alane (Watford) Bryan Susan Alane (Watford) Bryan of Warrenton, VA, went to rest peacefully in the arms of her Maker on Thursday, June 22, 2023, surrounded by her family. Born to Gene and Paula Watford in Washington, DC, and raised in Friendly, MD, Susan relocated to Warrenton in 1989 with her husband Bill, and their young son, Nathan, before welcoming three daughters, Caitlin, Lauren, and Mallory. Before creating a home in Warrenton, Susan graduated from Friendly High School and matriculated to Longwood College in 1979 as a Longwood Scholar, and graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1983. Many will know Susan for her heart for people, conversation, and Jesus–for every individual she met, she never hesitated to genuinely stop and ask how they were doing, and how she could be praying for them. Susan loved the Lord Jesus Christ, and began every morning with a dedicated time of quiet devotion, spent in prayer, study, and worship. She was an active member of many women’s Bible studies in her community, and fostered deep, loving friendships over the decades that spoke into her life and into the lives of her children. Susan is survived by her husband of 37 years, William Walter (Bill) Bryan III, son Nathan (wife Laura, and son Liam), daughters Caitlin (husband Adam Kirby), Lauren (husband Reid Morrison), and Mallory. She is also survived by father Gene Watford, sister Paige Brown (husband Steve), niece Jillian Alexander (husband Josh, and children Ezekiel, Aimee, Charlie), and nephew Zachary Brown (wife Sydney, and son William), as well as numerous beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was predeceased by her mother, Paula Watford, and sister Camie Watford. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 1 at Moser Funeral Home in Warrenton, VA at 11:00am, with family receiving visitors beginning at 10:00am, and interment following immediately at Bright View Cemetery. As Susan wanted this to be a true celebration that she is now in Glory with her Savior, the family would like to invite those in attendance to wear their favorite yellow accessory if they wish, as yellow was Susan’s favorite color. In lieu of flowers, donations in Susan’s memory can be made to GO2 for Lung Cancer, Compassion International, and Samaritan’s Purse. Expressions of sympathy and shared memories can be posted on the Moser Funeral Home website. Obituaries
