TREND Repor t

Altuzarra Spring 2015

One print that we couldn’t ignore this spring/ summer is the picnic-party gingham. Designers like Michael Kors, Oscar de la Renta and Altuzarra, all picked this pretty print reminiscent of an early Mad Men episode to create a new way to wear this trend. Whether it’s layered sheers, two-piece dressing or crop tops and cut-outs, this ain’t your grandmother’s hand-me-downs.

The IT Staple: Culottes The 70’s era has brought back a trend we’re all over for spring: culottes. These wide-leg cropped pants are the perfect pairing for any look. Opt for a light-weight fabric for an ethereal look, or a rich suede to keep up the psychedelic vibe. J Crew, Tibi and Thakoon were among many designers who decided to take a cropped approach to pants for spring.

Alexander Wang Spring 2015

Pairing solid neutrals with a sporty or masculine influence is the stand-out for spring. Alexander Wang, Victoria Beckham and Philip Lim all highlighted this trend on their runways, offering a clean and fresh approach to spring. Take it further and look for styles with laces, zippers and boxy hemlines to create the perfect street-style ensemble.

BAGS LADY (AND MAN)

by James

We’re living in the age of It-girls, models and handbags. When people think of the pinnacle of luxury bags, they think of the Birkin by Hermes named for actress Jane Birkin. They might also think of the classic Chanel 2.55 in all of its quilted, CCclad, flapped glory. And while both bags along with a few others are extraordinary and have stayed popular for so long, what makes a bag really special is how relatable it is to its wearer.

I’ve carried a bag for every important moment in my life. They’re like family that don’t disappoint and never let me down. EVER. The type depended on where I was in life. When I was in a transitional phase and was constantly moving, the messenger became a favorite for how practical and easy it was to carry. For college, the tote was my go-to because it was mobile and smart. Now in adulthood, I’m obsessed with satchels, bucket bags, slouchy totes, and duffels in all kinds of leathers and exotic skins. I’ve also as of late become attracted to backpacks. I get paid to notice trends and translate them to the public when writing, or create new trends and turn them into iconic moments as a stylist. Handbags are no different. For me, the best time to see what’s being worn is during Fashion Month – that block of time where New York, London, Milan and Paris have their fashion weeks. Editors, off-duty models, bloggers, and stylists carry the best of what speaks to them. The mini bag is having a big moment in fashion. Girls are carrying mini versions of their favorite big bags and it’s giving them a modern, albeit impractical sense of effortless style – an endlessly chic example is the Petite Malle by Luis Vuitton. Satchels as of late have more structure as evidenced by one of this year’s It-bags, the Loewe Puzzle Bag. And leather with print is also being taken to the next level with the emergence of Valentino becoming an accessories powerhouse. Anything that comes with a dust jacket is probably not going to be cheap. Such is the reality of the luxury goods market. That’s why the bags I’ve curated below are multifunctional and work well in more than one season. We may be in the era of It-bags, but we’re also living, and trying to survive in an era of fiscal responsibility. These investments are going to age well without destroying your portfolio.

3.1 Phillip Lim - Quill Calfskin Bucket Bag, Powder The bucket shape is one of the most popular silhouettes for bags. Phillip Lim, the designer known most for modern class brings the two aesthetics together in this smooth leather bag with pitch-black strap. The metal square handle adds a bit of edge to this contemporary classic. $1,095 available at Bergdorf Goodman.

1

Paula Cademartori Dun Dun appliqued leather shoulder bag Tribal prints in leather has been done before, but it’s rare to find a tribal applique. That alone makes this shoulder bag a must-have, but the soft blue makes it appropriate for the spring/summer and the size isn’t bad either. $1,925 available at Net-A-Porter.com.

2

The Row - Sideby Pebbled Calfskin Shoulder Bag, Beige Pebbled calfskin is one of the more durable types of leather to have for a bag. It’s a good thing, because this shoulder bag by The Row is going to be a good investment. It’s minimalistic design make it one of those classic bags that can outlast trends. The fact that it’s in beige gives it anonymity where the seasons are concerned. $2,550 available at Bergdorf Goodman.

4 FENDI- Peekaboo Large Orchid-Print Satchel Bag FENDI is an accessories powerhouse, but as of late, their bag collections have gone to the next level. This orchid-print with splashes of soft red is one of those bags that you shouldn’t wear everyday, but you can’t help it because it’s so beautiful. $6,850 available at Bergdorf Goodman.

5 Loewe Puzzle Bag

Kate Spade Shaw Street Snakeskin-Embossed Bicolor Leather Satchel Nothing says working woman class and elegance more than a Kate Spade bag. This structured satchel is snakeskin-embossed with a solid zip opening and top handle. It’s such a classy bag for the woman on the move. The two-toned color-block gives it a bit of modernity. $548 available at Saks Fifth Avenue.

Anthony

Turano IMAGE MAKER

H

e’s been in the fashion industry since the early 2000s. His strong, provocative images certainly tell a compelling story. We wanted to know a little more about Anthony Turano and his amazing career behind the camera. FM: Tell us a little bit about your path in becoming a fashion photographer. AT: Well, like many, it started out as a hobby. My education is actually in law enforcement. I was a police officer in Miami when the photography bug got me. I started out shooting mostly scenery and still life, like most photographers do. A life-threatening injury while on duty forced me to stop being a police officer, and that’s when I turned to the arts as a secondary career. I first started out in graphic design and photo retouching, which eventually led me

to persuing photography more seriously. FM: We love the look and feel of your work. Let’s talk about one of the key elements of your photographs: the model. During casting, what do you look for in a model? What’s the one thing models need to have in order to be the perfect fit for your concept and vision? AT: Models are definitely a key element to my work. Choosing the right model is key to achieving your desired goal. The wrong model can even change your concept sometimes. When I choose a model, the first step is always based on looks and how she fits the concept. I then narrow it down by experience and availability. At this point in my career, I’m very lucky that I have great relationships with many of the top agencies in North America and have access to amazing models for my projects.

FM: What do you enjoy most about shooting fashion and beauty? AT: I suffer from something that most artists suffer from, which is that we get bored very easily. The thing I love the most about my job is that even though I’m “technically” doing the same thing in the act of taking photos, every day is different - models, locations, concepts, and sometimes a different crew. FM: Since we are talking fashion and beautiful things, let’s talk about your new beauty: the Pentax 645Z. Can you share with us what it means to be an ambassador for RICOH IMAGING? AT: My recent partnership with RICOH IMAGING has been a great one. I think they are really changing the game with the Pentax 645Z. Having 51.2 megapixels and being a medium format camera makes it a huge contender in the industry. Being chosen as an ambassador for the product to represent the fashion industry is a huge honour. I’ve been shooting with it since September 2014, and absolutely adore it. The level of detail I get in my shots is unparalleled. FM: We’ve been following ‘The Stockings Project’ and loved all the great preview images. Tell us a little more about the premise of this project. Why did you get involved? AT: The Stockings Project is something very near and dear to my heart. It started off as a small personal project that I wanted to do just raise money for breast cancer with my work. However, I had to put the project on hold, as well as my other work, because I was struck with cancer myself. This clearly made me more motived for this project and I took it on with full force once I was better.

That’s when I partnered up with Blush Lingerie for the book, which gave us a big boost. The book will be released in October of 2015 with all profits going to the CURE foundation. FM: Will you be working on simillar projects like this in the future? AT: There are no plans as of yet for another project. For the moment, I’m putting all my focus on The Stockings Project, which has taken almost 2 years to complete. If it goes well and generates a lot of money for my charity, I would definitely consider another project. FM: You do a fair amount of work in Miami - one of our all-time favourite cities. What is it about Miami that inspires you? AT: I was born in Montreal, but was raised in Florida. Miami has always had a special place in my heart. Some would say it’s my second home. Its obviously a playground for photography, but I’ve always been in love with the art deco and Latin vibe of the city. It’s what keeps me going back. My style of work does well there. FM: If you were to dedicate yourself to another genre of photography, which one would it be and why? AT: Most would be surprised by my answer, but I would have to say sports photography. I know, it’s VERY different from fashion, but I think that’s what attracts me to it. That, and my love of sports. I think the fact that it’s the polar opposite of fashion is what attracts me. What I do is very planned; sports is more spontaneous. I just think I would love it.

FASHION FM: For a little while now, there’s been a shift in industry thinking when it comes to the appropriate starting age of models, and embracing various body types. While travelling on assignment, do you feel this change when working in different locations? AT: I think this is something that comes in waves every couple of decades, like trends. I was never shy to work with plus-size models or models who were just starting out. I think that there will always be clients that like the tall, super-skinny models, and clients that want the not-so-skinny models. FM: Which model or celebrity would you love to work with and why? What would be your ideal location? AT: That’s so hard for me to answer. There are so many models I would love to work with, but it would all depend on the context. I’ve always loved the classic beauty of Monica Bellucci. If I had to pick one, it would be her. I would probably shoot her in black and white, outdoors or somewhere with natural light, just to capture her with the best light possible. FM: Speaking of celebrities, what are your thoughts on celebrities becoming more intertwined in the fashion industry? AT: Celebrities have been in fashion for a long time. I have no issue with it. However, one thing I would love to see is less strict restrictions on models. Being in the industry for a long time, I totally understand why a model’s height is important for runway, or how clothing fits. However, when brands like

CoverGirl use celebrities that are 5’2”, it only proves that there is a market for stunning women who maybe were not blessed with extremely long legs. FM: If you could share one piece of advice to the young photographers out there, what would it be? AT: My advice to young photographers starting out would be this: Talent is 50% of making it in this industry. The other 50% is being a good businessperson, accountant, marketing manager and social media expert. These are all key things to succeed in this day and age. There are more photographers nowadays than before. Digital photography has made it very accessible. And a lot of them are very talented. If you want to make it, you need more than just talent. FM: Last but not least, what’s next for you? What can we expect to see from Anthony Turano in 2015? AT: I always have some new projects in the works, most of which I can always talk about until they happen. Everyone should stay tuned for the release of my book. Hopefully we’ll raise a lot of money for this great cause.

Model

by Revend Brifkani

They have millions of followers on social media outlets, have a certain ‘je ne sais quoi’, and jet set around the world for one fundamental reason: being beautiful. There’s something undeniably intriguing about it. Whether we admit it or not, models are a focal point of the fashion industry – and the object of our jealousy. They’re used as muses for brands, chosen carefully as the “first face” on a runway, and are chameleon-like in varying eye-grabbing advertising campaigns. Who are the ‘Itgirls’ at the moment, and what makes them so special? A few names have become recently engraved in our memory: Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner, Jourdan Dunn, Lindsey Wixson, Daria Strokous, Grace Mahary, the list goes on and on. These women in particular have something special that has always brought them back to public attention. A model must be versatile, confident, and have a strut worthy of international attention. It’s like watching gladiator-type females when a runway show starts and you see a powerful step in these women’s walks. Kendall has been the craze for a while, and came under much criticism when she began finding work in the fashion world, obviously due to the Kardashian connection. It came as somewhat of a surprise when she was able to perform as a real model with versatility, and not just be the simple, “pretty face” of Estee Lauder (which is not meant to be downplayed beyond anything but an enormous success). The Fall 2015 Ready-To-Wear Alexander Wang show saw Kendall plow down the runway to hardcore electro-rock music in a fabulous, yet somewhat kinky rock-gothic-inspired ensemble. Bad ass, bold and beautiful. Gigi is also a huge success, but only up until recently has she been getting a wider lens of international triumph. Having gone from being the face of Guess to walking the runways for Tom Ford, Balmain, and especially Max Mara - where she channeled a striking resemblance to Marilyn Monroe - you couldn’t help but notice her. She is completely stunning, and has a very unique look to her; a rare quality in an industry where many models look alike. Gigi has beautiful, round cheeks that almost resemble a porcelain doll, big blue/green eyes, and a smile that warms your heart. She is the picturesque girl-next-door with a mean walk and delicate curves. Jourdan Dunn is an interesting beauty. Part model, part mother, and part businesswoman, she definitely rocks more than just one microphone. Ms. Dunn has amassed a large international following and contracts including a side-by-side Burberry advertisement with the legendary Naomi Campbell. She has a contageous laugh, and if you follow her on instagram, is genuinely a very likeable person. Jourdan recently announced that she would be designing a clothing line for children and young adults, which is a nice breath of fresh air. All of these women are inspiring. It’ll be interesting to watch their careers take flight as the fashion seasons continue. But most importantly, who will go a route the way Naomi did as a philanthropist later in her career, and who will throw their cell phones at those who don’t obey? We are terribly excited either way.

Midsummer

Night’s Dream By: Sienna Vittoria Lee-Coughlin

I think it’s fair to say that we all experience a similar feeling towards the end of the crisp Canadian winter. It’s a feeling of eagerness, a longing to see the grey slush and snow replaced with brilliant green grass, and for the drab cement sidewalks to be once again lined with blossoming tulips.

This year, welcome spring with a wardrobe evocative of the season itself. The Spring/ Summer 2015 runways were brimming with floral appliques, whimsical patterns and textiles that flowed like a soft breeze. Alberta Ferretti infused a sense of romance into her collection, presenting a host of blush-toned chiffon summer gowns. Over at Valentino, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli sent their ladies out gauzed in delicate, floral frocks in warm spring tones, reminiscent of a group of forest nymphs. Chloé’s models were clad in romantic, white eyelet lace, and over at Giorgio Armani, shimmering, ethereal nude gowns were offered. We’ve rounded up several pieces to add to your shopping list that will make you feel like a flower fairy yourself.

BEAUTY My favourite spring colours are a lot lighter than the ones I like normally. But I’m also in love with the 90’s grunge look: messy hair, brown hues to the eyes and lips, and cream-coloured liner in the waterline.

Another trend I’m delighted with, is light pink and lavender hues on the lid and a natural crease. Add a thick winged liner, great lashes (preferably mink), perfect brows, and a nude lip with plenty of liner. This look is really clean, shows off a little more natural beauty, and opens up the eyes. Heading into the summer, contouring and highlighting is a must. It creates a great base for any makeup, and provides the right amount of sex appeal as the weather warms up.

fave editor’s

Nails should also be quite natural. Nude, light brown and taupe colours are subtle yet playful, but as we head into summer, these colours will definitely change to brighter hues. The same can be said about lip colour as well. - Melanie Viger, Beauty Editor
