We appreciate a good coat especially if it’s functional and fashionable. In fact, this goes for all winter wear: hats, gloves and scarves. These must-haves should also be complementary to your style.
During a recent interview, I was asked how I felt about Canadian winters and the impact it has on fashion. At first, I wanted to quickly blurt out that our desire to stay fashionable is compromised during the winter months. Thankfully, I took a few more moments to defrost my thoughts, and responded by saying, “Canadians have mastered the art of keeping warm and staying fashionable.” For most of us, hearing the word winter is comparable to hearing music suddenly stop in the middle of dance party. Luckily, we have prepared an issue filled with fashionable items that will keep you looking great this season and the next. Winters in Canada are serious. We constantly talk about the weather - it’s the only way we get through it! And while we’re talking about it, we’re usually focusing on how much we need to bundle up.
Even though winter outerwear has come a long way in design and technology, it’s what Canadians wear underneath that’s really eye-catching. I often put in a few hours of work sitting in coffee shops and small restaurants. While I’m there, I also get a chance to observe people coming in and peeling off all their winter layers while revealing all sorts of fantastic knits.
function, we are known to have fun with the styling. Whether they match and work together, or stand out completely, these knitted pieces give out hints to someone’s personal style. But there’s more than knitwear for us Canadians. Sure, heavier fabrics or thicker blends are sought out at this time of year; however, with technological advancements, there is a whole new range of materials available that are versatile, light, and also keep us warm. Layering has become a fashionable art form for those that need to brave the winter months. A good wool sweater is an essential part of the Canadian winter wardrobe. It makes a great statement on its own, and is perfectly paired with finer knits and other fabrics. Skirts, blouses and dresses can be used yearround when being strategic with appropriate textures and seasonal layering.
Last year, I invested in a pair of knitted “Après-Ski” pants from Over the next few months, take Simons. They feature a modern a look at your wardrobe with an take on a classic black and white open mind and incorporate interwinter pattern. They are lined for esting pieces to make a seasonextra comfort and protection. I able fashion statement. MODEL
citizen Journey to Germany By Delaney Holley
Oprah Winfrey once said, “The biggest adventure you can ever take is to live the life of your dreams.” Truer words have never been spoken. After graduating with Honours from the University of Ottawa in June of 2014, I needed to decide what my next step would be. I completed a chapter of my life holding a Bachelor of Arts with Specialization in Communication and a Minor in Arts Administration, and now needed to focus on what kind of an impact I wanted to make. I was equipped with the technical tools and skills needed to effectively communicate with people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. All of this experience has helped me see the value of organization, planning and encouragement.
Striving to maintain a balance between of professionalism and personal interests, I decided to register for the Top Model Search Canada pageant. The week was spent meeting with agents from around the world, participating in fashion shows, photo shoots and interviews. The competitive process ended with me being named Miss Intercontinental Canada 2014. After receiving the title, I began the preparing for the international competition scheduled
to take place in Jordan during the month of October. Safety concerns forced the organization to postpone and relocate the pageant to Germany. Evening gowns, cocktail dresses, high heels, coats, and a slew of accessories – hair tools and makeup products included – filled my luggage to capacity! I somehow managed to fit everything into two suitcases, a carry-on and purse.
The excitement was overwhelming when my departure date arrived. I had connecting flights in Heathrow, England, and in Munich, Germany on route to my final destination of Berlin. The first four days of my stay included touring around the historic city; taking in all the architecture that surrounded us. We visited the Brandenburg Gate, the site of the Berlin Wall, and German Parliament. From Berlin we traveled to the city of Magdeburg. There, we met with the Mayor and visited a traditional Christmas market. Fifteen days of interviews and press conferences, photo and video shoots, events and excursions ensued leading up to the final evening of the pageant. Hearing the crowd, I thought of my friends and family who were live-streaming the event back in Canada.

For me, beauty is happiness; it is a gesture, a smile, a kind word, and compassion. Beauty is not only something visual, but also something that can be felt.

The show began with the presentation of the delegates’ national costumes, followed by the evening gown parade and swimwear showcase. The top fifteen were announced, and I was more than thrilled to have been chosen for the next round! At this point, I was in the top three countries in North America, including Central America and the Caribbean Islands. At the pageant’s close, I was both humbled and proud to receive the Miss Congeniality award and title, which is voted by all of the participating delegates. I have never been so proud to be Canadian. Representing my country on the international stage gave me a moment to appreciate all that makes us unique. Travelling home from Germany, I reflected on my experience. The Miss Intercontinental pageant was about challenging myself, and embracing the opportunity to expand my comfort zone. I continuously strive to achieve positive change through local and global reach. It was inspiring to meet and get to know seventy-three strong, educated and passionate young women who are determined to make a difference in this world. Learning about the countries and cultures of the other delegates was truly eye-opening. I want to thank my friends, family, community and all of the fave Magazine readers for your support and encouragement. Drive, determination and unwavering commitment are the tools that will make my dreams come true. Twitter & Instagram: @delaneyholley Facebook: Delaney Holley #MICANADA14

alliano: Couture’s Heirloom
T
by Revend Brifkani
he start of a new year means seeking an opportunity for a fresh start. A chance to start anew – making peace with your past to avoid disrupting the present. This is especially true for Mr. John Galliano, former creative director of Christian Dior.
Geisha and Kabuki inspirations, and 1960’s pin up lingerie in Dior classicalism; always a tale full of inspiration with a magnificent sense of drama.
Once upon a time, people regaled the picturesque work and imaginative beauty associated with Galliano; who in his time was arguably one of the most successful and innovative fashion designers in the world. Those only vaguely familiar with the word ‘couture’ might imagine baffling, eccentric silhouettes that can most times be credited to Galliano for leaving his mark.
It was no accident that Galliano held a 15-year tenure at Dior; longer than the time held by Christian Dior himself before his unfortunate death.
The designer, however, did so much more than create animated collections. Each of his shows was admired greatly for its sophisticated charm, fine craftsmanship and proof of extensive research. Collections were waited upon eagerly, and were escapes into the vision of Galliano’s choosing. Some dreams included Ancient Egyptian Goddesses met with futurism, Russian princesses on a journey,
But what could possibly change this designer’s image?
Dior was famous for being a contemporary and progressive man; a lover of gardens and all things beautiful, he wanted to dress the women of the future and to push forward. Galliano was equally famous for this, in his own eccentric and flamboyant way. As a creator, he has the ability to expand the horizons of his clientele and their wardrobes. If there was one message to take from Galliano, it was that the clothes you chose to wear reflected your freedom – that should you dare to dream, push your limitations as far as you can, and be inspired.

alliano was able to create lavish and imaginative work using the famed couture ateliers of Paris to their fullest capacity. A notable collection of Spring/Summer 2009 Haute Couture for example saw his creations go down the runway with some corsets and ball gowns literally finished inside out to demonstrate the incredible craftsmanship that Dior had become so known for. People were in awe of the intricate hand stitching, highly technical seaming, ribbon binding and countless hours of work – this was a trail blazing moment in the secret world of couture. Take our perception of beauty standards, destroy them and remold them. I am certain these thoughts were shared between those who sat through Galliano’s Spring Summer 2006 show. It was called “Everything is Beautiful”, and had a wonderful message of acceptance. Female and male models of all ethnicities, shapes, height, size, age, sexual orientation appeared on the runway. It brought realism to the stage, which is rarely seen. Diversity of real people wearing the collection instead of models was a delightful change. The clothes, of course, were brilliant. Imagine a sophisticated ensemble, made to the highest standard, but at the same time, animalistic, dramatic and savage. This is fitting to describe some of John Galliano’s style. Shows that took the phrase “larger than life” literally, and added a theatrical feel to every detail. That being said, he was equally known for creating light, ethereal, almost weightless pieces that looked like they were painted on the body with watercolors. True confidence when a designer creates a collection is a palpable characteristic, be it the silhouettes themselves, fabrics, accessories, hair and makeup. Perhaps the lights, set and mood create a sense of escapism.
It’s almost immediately evident when someone believes in their work the way Galliano does.
T
he famed Fall Winter 2009 John Galliano show was like entering the theatre; the mood set for the romantic tale of a woman on a Trans-Siberian journey. Inspired by Russian and Balkan folklore, this would be a fashion moment to be remembered. A tunnel of light ominously appeared with the black silhouette of a woman walking gently through falling snow. Traditional Balkan music filled the room, and gypsy-chic inspired looks began to appear – looking completely immaculate. It was very dramatic, yet when dissected, very wearable. Each full-skirted coat gave an intriguing feel and told a story. Other ensembles of large billowing beaded blouses and full skirts were cut to fit traditionally, but had Galliano in their DNA – all atop towering platform heels. The looks were accessorized with draping silver jewels, headdresses and stunning embroidery. The show was a huge success.
I
t is not easy for designers to demonstrate repeated innovation; especially on a platform like Christian Dior. While John Galliano had much financial success and the world watching his every move, each high brought pressure and demand to create better than the last. No one could guess how horribly things would turn February 28th in 2011. A video surfaced of Galliano making dreadful anti-Semitic remarks in a Paris café. Nothing short of jaw dropping reactions rippled throughout the world. Galliano was dismissed from the house of Dior – wherein at the time of this crime he was producing a staggering thirty-two collections per year between Dior and his namesake labels. The excessive work he had been producing is, of course, no excuse for his terrible remarks.
FEATURE
B
ehind the headlines, Galliano kept quiet about an escalating alcohol and drug abuse problem that led to this scandal. The toxicologist that appeared in court for the designers’ trial provided proof of barbiturate poisoning; a product of his excessive drinking mixed with painkillers, sleeping pills and a slew prescription drugs. Only after losing everything, would Galliano openly admit to the struggles he faced as an addict and what experiences led to his downward spiral. The designer recounts not being able to say no to new projects as he became more successful, and his workload increased while taking its toll. Forgiveness can be difficult. It’s important to remember that John Galliano is a human being, and that no one is immune to making mistakes. In this particular case, appropriate retribution is needed when an act such as his is committed. This has surpassed beyond his losses at Dior; he will carry this stain for the rest of his life. It begs the question: how long should a person suffer for their mistakes, especially when they are sincerely trying to seek amends?
scandal, he would move forward and take on a brief stint as a designer-in-residence with Oscar de la Renta; taking him back into an atelier environment. It was clear which looks of the Fall 2013 collection were Galliano-influenced. This brings us to January of this year. Galliano took a couture show to London, and made his return to fashion as Creative Director of Maison Martin Margiela. There was surely skepticism that led up to this moment. Would the innovation still be there? Would John be able to deliver his fantasies again after a whirlwind collapse?
T
After spending a period of time in rehabilitation addressing his many addiction problems, Galliano continues to seek forgiveness from the Jewish community. Although most have turned him away, one of London’s oldest Orthodox Synagogues had accepted a dialogue with the designer. Galliano would describe the events with humble humility.
his man has the gift of creativity, an imagination like no other, and his comeback collection was proof of his sober ingenuity. He let everybody know what time it was, and reminded us of his roots as a London trained designer. Ensembles were deconstructed – only then to be reconstructed with an artistic and provocative feel. The clothes were absolutely striking. The Margiela roots of expertise and repurposing in the clothes were visible. Upon close examination, one finds clever details in the very first look, such as a suede jacket trimmed with little black toy cars. Another innovative couture look was the scarlet red coat with transparent pockets and seashells, shaped like a face over the center front atop prominent red patent stockings.
Rabbi Barry Marcus explained after Galliano attended a service at the Central Synagogue, “We all make mistakes, built into Judaism is the concept of giving a person another chance, or forgiving. So much of who we are and how we operate as human beings is built on that very principle.”
Galliano blended confidence and love with this collection. He did not step on any toes and create an aggressive show to achieve shock value. Noticeably absent was his famous catwalk strut. Instead, a brief humble bow while wearing a white Margiela Atelier lab coat before quickly disappearing.
Without a doubt, John Galliano looks back on the person he was becoming and feels grateful to be alive. A few years after the

Break all the rules by focusing colour on both the eyes and lips. Start with gold, bronze and coffee tones in the Estee Lauder Fierce Safari eye shadow set. Focus the deepest shades in the crease and lash line, with the brighter colours on the brow and inner corners of the eyes. For lips, try an intense Pure Color lipstick in Poppy Love, also by Estee Lauder, coupled with a lip gloss.

MAKING S M OKE Create a bold sexy eye by going smokey. Instead of using black, apply an eye shadow combination of Golden Peach to the inner part of the lid with Soft Sienna to the outer. Then smudge Matte Espresso on the lower and upper lashline. Since the focus will be only on the eyes, just add touches of soft pink on cheeks and lips. For the blush, use Amazonian Clay 12 Hour Blush in Glisten then LipSurgence Lip Tint in Charmed on the mouth. All of colour is by Tarte.

Doing a big updo with your hair can create a bold impact. For shine and the optimum control that you need, use Let’s Jam Extra Hold Gel by Soft Sheen Carson. For makeup, try an eye shadow combination of Chiffon Sparkle, Malted and Black Chocolate as a liner, then finish your lips with Blue Raspberry Creamy from the Deluxe Lip & Eye Palette. For cheeks, get added sheen with Bronze Glow - all by Bobbi Brown cosmetics. For nails, start with a coat of Grand Gala, then finish the tips with Dazzling Dance from the CND Vinylux Gilded Dreams Holiday collection.

RETTY IN
INK
Going bold with your nails doesn’t have to mean using red. Switch it up with a bright pink. Start by using manicure tape to block off the moon of the nail, then brush on a coat of Deborah Lippmann polish in the Sexy Back set which also has a matching lip stick - that can go from sheer to full color.
LINE LINE B Y
Don’t go subtle with a thin line, go all-the-way by overdoing it. Go from the standard winged eye line to a dramatic one by extending it further and making it thicker. The Alexa For Eyeko mascara and liner set will give you the tools to make a precision line that is waterproof. The more you extend the line, the thicker it should be. For the lips, go nude with a touch of shimmer by using the Shea Moisture Lip Crayon in Christine for a hydrating hint of colour.
