from the editor Before I get into the exciting season of spring, I want to take a moment for a special thank you and dedication. Not only was our last issue a record breaker, it got international attention which also increased our appeal in Europe and the United States. 2013 has proven to be the beginning of a new era for fave Magazine, and we could not have reached such extraordinary milestones without our team. That being said, this issue is dedicated to all the incredibly talented, passionate and devoted individuals of the fave Magazine team. I would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the guest contributors and everyone that collaborated with us in the past. It’s because of all of you that fave Magazine has grown to be where it is now. We could not have done it without your dedication. Again, thank you. Spring is a very exciting time for all fashion lovers. Light, colourful and playful trends are what this much anticipated season is all about. There is one particular trend that is very present right now: Black & White. It is such a classic and timeless trend, that it’s an easy go-to for all stylists and fashionistas alike. This time around, it’s applied to every facet of fashion. We can even see it in a wide variety of beauty products, such as nail lacquers. Whether this trend is done in monochromatic blocking or geometric shapes and patterns, it has touched everything from lace to leather. Although this trend is absolutely everywhere, we had to feature it on the cover. It wasn’t the trend alone that was the deciding factor; it also had to do with a very special fashion feature. For all the new readers of fave Magazine, this feature is called LE$$ TRENDY. The premise of this feature is to have a stylist choose 4 current trends and then recreate them by using items only found in thrift shops. For this issue, we focused on our favourite trend: Black & White. The idea of thrift shopping or implementing second hand items in one’s wardrobe is not a new one. Hipsters and vintage lovers have been riding this train for a long time. We wanted to showcase this idea in a fashion platform to share affordable options of the latest trends to our readers. LE$$ TRENDY was our first fashion feature and it was launched in our inaugural issue. It was also the feature that caught media attention and landed us many local TV appearances. In light of fave Magazine’s recent successes, we thought it was only fitting to have the LE$$ TRENDY feature on the cover for our largest issue yet.

Hot Off the Press: Black and White

Blinged Out: Elegant Embellishment

On-Point Pastels: The IT Colour(s)

Just to be clear: we’re not talking a white button-up with a simple trouser (talk about DULL)! This trend is anything but dull due to its emphasis on the boldness of black & white. It’s creating visual interest using the two shades. Marc Jacobs, Tommy Hilfiger, and Michael Kors all featured this trend mixing stripes with dots, striped with houndstooth, dots with geometric prints, you name it. And let’s face it; investing in this is a GOOD thing – why? Because you can wear it year round!.

It’s common to see this trend in holiday, but for spring? Now that’s fresh. Look for embellished details on dresses, skirts and even sweatshirts! Keep it simple with the rest of the look to ensure it’s your stand-out piece. Jenny Packham, Celine, and Giambattista Valli all added elements of this delicate trend to their collections with vigour and class. Dress it up, dress it down – it’s a staple in any woman’s spring wardrobe.

Pretty pastels circa the 50’s are back in a BIG way this season. Erdem, Diane Von Furstenberg, and Oscar de la Renta all used soft blues, mint greens, pale pinks and mellow yellows to complete their spring collections. If you’re not sold on this sweet and oh-so-soft trend, try it with your accessories: clutches, hand bags, sunnies and even jewellery are all offered in an array of pastels just in time for warm weather.

BIRDS of a feather by Jennifer Lecompte

Leaving the capital for a weekend road trip to the Niagara region, a friend and I made a quick stop in Hamilton, Ontario to peruse the shops on James Street North. In the shadows of Copps Coliseum, we serendipitously spotted Blackbird Studios - a boutique run by local designers Kiki and Buckshot. A dainty yellow and black printed dress in the display window immediately caught my eye and invited me to take a closer look at their collection of private label couture and vintage reproductions. A work bench and sewing machine at the back of the shop revealed evidence that imagination and eccentric fantasy consistently transform to reality within the four walls. Surrounded by splashes of colour and tailored textures, I had fallen under their spell. The one-of-a-kind designs entice, intrigue and charm. Upon my return to Ottawa, I was fortunate to correspond with Kiki, one half of the duo behind Hamilton’s fashion gem.

Vol.6

fM: How did Blackbird Studios come to life? Blackbird: We’ve been friends for years and had been part of the Hamilton music scene. Our bands played together a lot, so we were always plotting out fun parties and shows together. I’d been in fashion for years and had encouraged Buckshot to pursue her interest in design. We took a course together in textile printing and were instantly smitten with the freedom of creating any fabric we could think up in our heads. We started creating own small collections and selling the pieces at trade shows, often sharing a booth. One weekend after a particular grueling show, we thought, “why aren’t we doing this together?” Within 5 minutes, we had thought up the name Blackbird Studios and left the show as business partners.

fM: Describe your brand in 3 words. Blackbird: Well, our catch phrase is “Made for a girl with a past, a woman with a history”, but in 3 words, “screenprinted, vintage inspired”. fM: Your prints are custom-made. Where does the inspiration come from? Blackbird: We create all of our prints and have new additions for every collection. Once we have our “muse”, the designs come pretty easy. We are completely inspired by nature, science and science fiction, fairy tales, film, music, and of course, travel. We’re off to London and Paris at the end of the month to dream about our next collection. www.blackbirdstudios.ca

fM: Where do you hope Blackbird will fly in 5-10 years from now? Blackbird: We have really set goals, which I think helps in bringing ideas into realization. After planning and plotting for 3 years in our studio, we opened our retail shop last year, hit the ground running and haven’t slowed down the pace. The response to our product has been overwhelming. We’ve just started to bring in other labels and accessories to compliment our own. Our goal is to make our retail store and James St. North a destination shopping stop for Toronto, Hamilton, and the Niagara region. There is a lot of talent in this city and on our street. We are extremely proud of our downtown and work really hard to make sure we represent it in a positive, productive way. We have just started to hire a team of the best local artisans we could find, to help us produce our collections. We’d like to eventually sell our product on a global scale. fM: What is the significance behind the name/logo for Blackbird Studios?

fM: Tell us about your clientele? Who do you wish to target with your designs?

Blackbird: “Blackbird Studios” came pretty quickly. As textile artists, we’re incredibly inspired by nature and the natural sciences. I had started printing ravens and crows and incorporating them with Art Nouveau designs.

Blackbird: Our customers range from 13 year old graduates right up to 75 year old Grandmothers. It’s important to us to make women of all ages feel good about themselves and what they are wearing. We’re all about fit, design and fabric quality, not so much target market. It’s all about how you style yourself.

This fabric became one of the best sellers in the collection, so we thought, why not Blackbird? They’re a good omen and symbolize mystery, magic, secrets, pure potential and higher ideals. They also look great on a dress. What could be better?

fM: What are your favourite things in your store right now? Blackbird: Our shop is pretty packed to the rafters right now, with prom season staring us in the face. But I’d have to say one of my most favourite pieces is the “Jane” coat from our Fall/12 collection “The Mortal Flesh”. It’s a charcoal linen, draped coat inspired by Jane Eyre. It has the most beautiful soliloquy printed in the lining, like a secret. I’ll miss it when it sells, we only made one. We’re also well into our next collection, “Spanish Harlem”, which is light and fun and super colorful. We’re working with a lot of intricately embroidered cotton eyelets and printing it with sugar skulls. Those dresses are a breathe of fresh air.

MUST HAVES 1. Notice Me NEON By Geneviève Peeke Spring is definitely my favourite season. I love how you can pull off pretty much anything in the spring because it is such a fun and busy season! With so many events to go to in the spring, I am always trying to find great pieces that will make me stand out. Even if you simply opt for the denim shorts and a tank-top look, have some fun with your accessories. Spring is the time to play around and make a statement, so take some fashion risks and have a fabulous season!

Bright lips aren’t the only thing that’s making a statement this season. A bright handbag is what I am currently coveting! I love bright pops of colour for spring and summer, because they really do make your outfit stand out in a crowd. Neon can really work in any situation; whether it be on a simple tote bag while you relax by the pool, or a super fun clutch for an evening dinner.

2. MOD Maven

An eccentric mod-inspired piece is a definite must-have for spring and summer 2013! There are some fun retrolooking accessories everywhere right now, and graphic black and white is very in. I am loving bold sunglasses and crazy colour-blocked heels right now. The mod look is both fun and sophisticated; perfect for beautiful weather! LOUIS VUITTON

JIL SANDER

3. ATouch of Metal Shoes with metal details are all the rage this season and are definitely one of my must-haves. I love the chic factor that metal details give to a shoe; they can really turn a plain shoe into a fabulous one. 50 f ave

Amidst the cold and wet Ottawa slush, a glimpse of the sun finally shines through. Spring is coming. Thank goodness! Read on for highlights from Canada’s very best on the Spring/Summer 2013 runways.

MONTREAL

DUY - LaSalle College fashion-graduate Duy Nguyen created a marvelous collection of feminine frocks, peplum tops, sharp blazers and high-low skirts. Aquatic blue chiffons were contrasted with crisp whites, and the collection was highlighted with pieces in Tiffany’s blue - the colour of the season. “I love womenswear, because it makes me dream.” said Nguyen. When viewing these flowing and romantic pieces on the runway, we certainly agree. 54 f ave

OTTAWA

Y!D.N.A. Ottawa’s very own master of the avant-garde, Andy Nguyen, shocked and enchanted his viewers this season. Oil-covered Male models wearing very little chaperoned the ladies down the runway, spinning glitter-filled umbrellas. Black leather and blunt hairstyles completed the powerful collection.

TORONTO

PINK TARTAN - Rising model Charlotte Free embodied this collection with her signature daring pink hair and energetic spirit. Kimberly Newport’s designs are fun, flirtatious, and flattering to the female figure. An air of sixties glamour was present with cropped bustiers and voluminous circle-skirts; emphasizing the narrow waist. Done in pastel mint greens, shimmering gold and silvers, blush pinks, eggshell blues, these pieces were paired with headpieces by Toronto milliner Lara Vincent. This collection was impeccably crafted.

For this edition of Model Citizen, we could not have chosen a better candiate than Suzette Haywood. Jennifer Lecompte, fave Magazine’s writer and copy editor, sat down with Suzette to learn about her path to success in a feature called Rejuvination and Renovations.

Serendipitous. A word that can only truly describe my evening with SynSue Salon and Cosmetics founder Suzette Haywood. Introduced at Ottawa Fashion Week months earlier, it was almost silently understood that this rendezvous would eventually take place. Walking through the doors of Moji, a chic market bistro on Clarence Street, she radiates the consistent level of confidence that was very much present at our initial meeting.

Casually sipping on the house wine, we’re joined briefly by electrical contractor Charles Diotte, who settles into some “shop talk” and gives Suzette an update on the current status of her salon renovations. A labour of

love is almost complete. There is much anticipation. While listening intently to the conversation and pushing forkfuls of cannelloni around my plate, I couldn’t help but think that although you can find the right people to forge life’s path, life’s path can sometimes find you - its search, at times relentless. Born in Saint Vincent in the Caribbean, Suzette grew up with five brothers and a strong faith. Her parents moved north to give their children better opportunities. Suzette found herself spending winters in Montreal with her mother and summers in Brooklyn with her father, knowing very early on that she was destined for the beauty industry.

FEATURE

Starting out on the beauty pageant circuit, she was 2nd runner-up in the Saint Vincent pageant and won the title of Miss Quebec in 1993. She attended numerous events and parades giving her significant exposure in the community. “I loved it, but I remember it feeling like twenty hours had gone by while waving to everybody in that car. I think I still have the sunburn as a souvenir.” she recalls with a laugh. Her time in the sun didn’t stop there. She traveled to Miami and participated in Carnival with American beauty queens. “I was working for charities, visiting people in hospitals, lecturing students about the importance of education at schools. You sort of feel that because you’re young, you don’t have a lot to share, but it’s all about being who you are. People are just drawn to you.” Continuing her travels between Montreal and New York, Suzette was fully aware of just how vibrant and alive the fashion/beauty scene was. She enrolled in Montreal’s College LaSalle and College Inter-Dec in 1996 where she excelled in the art of hair and makeup. Teachers and mentors noticed her talent, and before long, she was landing beauty contracts for the movie industry. Impressively, her first jobs were working on the set of Snake Eyes with

Nicolas Cage and The Bone Collector starring Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie. Life had other plans for Suzette as a waning frequency of local shoots proved difficult to provide a stable environment for her daughter. She was freelancing as a makeup artist with Fashion Fair, began working for IMAN Cosmetics and took on bartending to keep everything together. Even through overwhelming times, she continued to focus on her dream of one day owning her own business and cosmetics line and persevered to show her daughter a good example. “I had a plan and I stayed disciplined. It doesn’t mean that you won’t have moments where you want to give up, but it’s important to breathe and reassess when you do feel that way.” she says. “I had to keep thinking that I was here for a reason; that this is what I was supposed to do to reach what I really wanted.” Opportunities in cosmetics and hair care did present themselves and left her with major decisions to make – all with potential risk. “I met a woman that knew a chemist. She helped me get SynSue (a merge of her name and her daughter’s) started, but I knew it was then up to me to really push this out there. I was a single mom on my last $300. I needed to make things happen.

I was selling to family and friends and got some great feedback on the product, but I also had people tell me: “What? Are you going to go up against Chanel and Prada? You’re crazy. Who is SynSue?” I knew that it needed to start small, but that I’d be back to show them who SynSue is.” she says. “There will always be people who put you down or try to get in your path or put out negative intentions, but it’s important to stay true to who you are. You can only be happy with yourself.” What has now grown into a full skincare line, SynSue is now available in Montreal and Ottawa, and will soon appear in shops around Toronto, Barbados and Saint Lucia this summer. (Among Suzette’s can’t-live-without products from her own line are the Night Serum and Sheer-free Foundation - Number 26) It goes without saying that having her brand come into fruition in her “hometowns” holds a lot of weight. It was this determination and drive that would lead her future husband to later describe her as a ‘Pit Bull in a Chihuahua’s body’. Meeting her husband through a mutual friend created a series of unexpected possibilities for Suzette. “Sean and I started dating, and it all started to fall into place. I got engaged and I was moving to Ottawa with my daughter. I was leaving my salon in Montreal behind, but knew that another salon would open again in time.” The first three years of opening her Ottawa location proved to be the most difficult. There were days where Suzette never saw a dime, but remained determined and focused on what she loved most. “I’d be there for 8-12 hours, lock the door, leave and come back the next morning with the same energy and smile, because I knew this is what I wanted to do and I just had to keep going. Days were good, days were bad, but I still had that drive.” she says. “I was the manager, the cashier, the receptionist, the stylist and the esthetician. People often asked me how I managed to do it all by myself, and I just told them that it’s my dream.” Aside from her strength of character, she also credits her amazing support system for keeping her dream alive. “I’m very fortunate to have a supportive family. I have the best in-laws in the world. My mother-in-law is French and my father-in-law is Irish. They are so warm and practically adopted my daughter and me. Everyone is so supportive. We’re really working together. Looking back, I really appreciate my experience. It’s a reminder that I’ve come a long way.”

Come a long way, indeed. Now that she’s on the brink of opening the doors to a newly renovated 1300sq salon, SynSue will be able to cater to all of your needs under one roof with a trained staff ready to deliver the SynSue standard. The space reflects much of what Suzette is: Warm, elegant, classy, fun, but professional and mirrors the clients they have. “It’s my strong belief that what you put out in life you receive, so I try to remain positive and upbeat because a lot of the girls that are now working with me are looking to me for that guidance. It’s such a pleasure for me to share that. Even with clients. The goal is to realize my and their full potential.” she says. “I’m so honoured that I get to talk to so many different people. I see the smile on their face and it’s rewarding. I feel privileged.” The SynSue experience is so much more than cosmetics, hair and spa treatments. It goes beyond the beautification of one’s exterior. It’s a full selfesteem, confidence building makeover. “For me, as a woman, I feel we need to stay strong mentally and physically. Anybody can have a pretty face, but there’s a lot to be said about that pretty face when she has power on a spiritual and intellectual level. I’m married, I’m a mother, but I’m still Suzette. I’m my own person with my own power. You have to find out what you are to stand on your own two feet.” she says with strong belief. The reason behind this new endeavor isn’t just to cater to more clients, but to be able to provide the right environment to bring out the best in them. Not just from head to toe, but inside out. “I’m looking to give people a place to go where you genuinely have a rejuvenating experience. It starts with the smile you receive, the cup of cappuccino or the glass of wine you have while you’re getting your hair done and the good experience clients get from that. I hope to follow that with giving clients real knowledge about the service they’re receiving and how that relates to their overall health. It goes hand-in-hand.” she says. Suzette was approached to become an educator for other various products she will be carrying in her salon, such as Design Essentials, Balmain and Bioesthetic. “We welcome walk-ins, but we make appointments so that your time with us is focused and one-on-one. Last October, while the weather began to cool down, things were just heating up for DeMoyo as the designer was preparing to shoot the Spring/Summer 2013 lookbook. fave Magazine had the incredible opportunity to take part in this moment. We were among the few lucky ones to have a first look this magnificent collection. Given the chance to describe the brand, I would say that it’s phenomenal, eco-conscious and humanitarian. It’s from the heart. Just when I thought this day couldn’t get any more surreal, it did. Toping this already spectacular opportunity, Canadian supermodel Herieth Paul was the choice model for the shoot! Along with the amazing garments, beautiful model and the wonderful people on set, Pai Chideya also welcomed me with open arms to get to know the heart and creative mind behind the phenomenal brand. It was a spiral-like experience. Outward and upward. The production of this shoot, like most fashion shoots of this calibre, lasted all day. For me, time flew by even though I spoke with Pai Chideya for hours. I was enchanted and fascinated by the conversation. It’s not every day that someone truly opens themselves up to share their passion, heart and devotion for their craft and their life. I feel honoured to have connected with a person who carries an incredible spirit. Meeting again the following day; our conversation continued right where we left off. We spoke for several more hours before even getting the chance to look at images from the shoot. After meeting with her, I don’t think that even the most in depth interview could convey Pai Chideya’s warm spirit and presence, but I hope that this 11 question interview gives you a sneak peek into world of DeMoyo.

Interview on the next page.

1-fM: Was becoming a fashion designer something that you envisioned from a child? If not, when did it become clear to you? PC: I could always draw as a child, and for the most part I would draw dresses all the time. At the tender age of 8 or 9, though, I didn’t know anything about the fashion industry. However, when I was in art school in Paris, my school was invited to the Valentino show and as soon as he walked out at the end after that magnificent show – thats when I knew! I was 19. 2-fM: Can you explain the meaning behind DeMOYO and why you chose it to be your brand name? PC:I knew I wanted something simple, catchy and with a sense of purpose. DeMOYO is taken from my name, Paidemoyo. Paidemoyo means “ My heart’s desire”. DeMOYO means “from the heart”. 3-fM: From Zimbabwe to Sweden, London and Paris, how do all of these great places play into your design? PC: They all have their individual, cultural influences, and most certainly impacted me in several ways. Design-wise, they are all very different. Zimbabwe is organic, Sweden is slightly futuristic, Paris is the Capital and London is the Innovator.

7-fM: What do you feel sets you apart? PC: I have an edge. I have a signature style that plays with masculine and feminine nuances, whilst remaining playful and sophisticated. 8-fM: Tell us more about DeMOYO supporting and helping by creating jobs in countries like Africa, and your eco-conscious initiatives. PC: I have created Art DeMOYO – please check out www.artdemoyoglobal.com which is a foundation that has 2 initiatives. The first part is about nurturing women with creative skills, which in turn supports DeMOYO by giving them jobs. The second initiative involves nurturing artistically gifted kids in Zimbabwe by donating art supplies. My eco-consciousness is coming through a vertically integrated process that am working on where I grow organic cotton, spin the cotton and creating fabrics locally. My vision has a long term impact on the environment and it creates local jobs as well. 9-fM: How has the Canadian market been for DeMOYO?

4-fM: You also spent some time in NYC and worked for some major Fashion icons like Carolina Herrera, Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren. What was the most important thing you learned from that experience?

PC: So far, its been challenging as a new designer. It is important though, for any designer in the field, to prove themselves, and I am happy to do that. But I will say that Canada has been very welcoming to DeMOYO thus far, and I have thoroughly enjoyed the process of putting our market feelers out there.

PC: They all taught me that discipline, clear vision, determination and design character are imperative to success.

10-fM: Can you tell about the inspiration and thoughts behind your Spring/Summer 2013 collection?

5-fM: I’m sure you’ve been asked this question many times, but our readers want to know where you draw your inspiration from?

PC: Spring 2013 is called “Within Spira” which speaks to spiral evolution, and is most emphasised in my crochet knits. I love the spiral. If you take a close look at any given spiral, you will see that it goes – up, around, back and around again. This process never ends. It is very much like this in my knits.

PC: Its quite ok! I draw my inspiration from life, nature, women, my mother...anything that gives life. I love colour, history and I love Spirituality. These all play into each collection one way or the other. 6-fM: How would you describe the DeMoyo woman? PC: She’s confident, successful, beautiful inside and out. She’s eco, health and spiritually conscious and she loves to look good, so she buys DeMOYO.

11-fM: What can we expect to see next from DeMoyo? PC: You can see my looks evolving. My style will continue to evolve. But I will stay true to my signature nuances and take my sophistication to new heights with new seasons. To learn more visit: www.paidemoyochideya.com

SKIN

An interview with Dr. Rice

We get an overwhelming amout of questions regarding skincare. It plays such an important role in looking and being healthy, that we had to find an expert in this field, so that we could share the knowledge with our readers. Dr. Rice is the authority on skincare in the capital, and we are very thankful for her time and experise on this topic.

Vol.6

FEATURE GET TO KNOW Dr. Rice fM: How did it all start for you? What led you to this career path and made you decide to focus on skin health-medical esthetics? Dr. Rice: My interest in skin care started over 23 years ago. As a physician, I spent time training with dermatologists and plastic surgeons. I knew traditional treatments for acne, but when I turned 31 I developed severe rosacea on the lower face that was very difficult to treat. This condition was so embarrassing and resistant to the usual treatments. As last resort, Accutane was used. It did help, but there were many side effects (all minor) and it was a major inconvenience going to the lab monthly for blood work. It was then I started a search for alternative treatments and ended up training in the United States.

Dr. Rice:The most common question I get is “how can I look better?” My clients are not expecting to look 20 years younger, but want a more refreshed, glowing, less tired, youthful look to their appearance. A close second is the control of acne in teens, and adult acne/rosacea with redness. fM:What would you say is your most common request in terms of services? Dr. Rice: The most common request in terms of services is Botulism toxin such as Botox® or Xeomin®. This product is used to relax muscles causing frown lines which make one appear angry or tired.

fM:What’s different about Clarite and its services from the others?

fM:What is the biggest misconception about skin health?

Dr. Rice: The difference with Clarite and other clinics is the attention and knowledge we offer to help clients achieve the refreshed, relaxed and more youthful look - the look that YOU want. We provide an individualized approach based on services and products that do make a difference.

Dr. Rice:The biggest misconception is related to sunscreens. When I ask if sunscreens are used, the clients reply proudly that they are - SPF 60+. You only require one around 30. To pay more for a higher spf is a waste of money as they offer only a small degree more protection. Many sunscreens are filled with filler or chemicals that degrade on exposure to the sun, no longer protecting against the harmful UVA rays that cause line, wrinkles, spots and volume loss.

Nothing is “cookie cutter”. Treatments are determined by myself, having received advanced training in esthetic skin care and laser at various well regarded institutions such as Harvard. Although not a dermatologist, I can offer knowledgeable advise and treatments for acne, rosacea, eczema and other skin conditions. Many of the “medical esthetics” clinics that are popping up do not have an onsite qualified physician trained in this area. It is not enough just to have a physician. Doctors do not receive training in lasers or advanced medical esthetics procedures in medical school. All injections of filler and botulism are only given by myself, never a technician.

We provide the consistency of care and honest recommendations based on facts.

118 f ave

fM:What is the most common question you get?

Vol.6

fM: what is the number one mistake people make in regards to their skincare regime? Dr. Rice: The number one mistake people make with regards to the skincare regime is SCRUBBING. When I review the client’s skin care regime, it is so common to hear that “scrubs” are used a few times a week, or even daily. This can be damaging to sensitive skin, rosacea, or those with acne, actually causing the skin to be worse. Clients are educated to deep cleanse in different ways to obtain a beautiful, smooth and clean feeling.

fM: Acne seems to be a growing issue affecting all ages and nationalities. Is there a reason for this? What treatments do you recommend? Dr. Rice: Acne is a big problem for a wide range of ages, from teens up to adults affecting both men and women. There are so many factors involved: hormones, stress, diet, products used, genetics and use of incorrect prescription creams such as steroids. Adult women that have acne have different concerns than teens. Scars, pigmentation and fine lines need to be addressed at the same time. fM: Some of our readers seems scared by the idea of “lasers”. Can you tell us more about the laser services you offer and the benefits? Dr. Rice: Lasers can be hazardous, so your readers have the right to be wary. To be effective, you need the right laser with the right power and the right person to use it! Recently the television show W5 featured the topic of lasers, revealing many issues with laser. Most clients think that when they go to a laser clinic they will be treated by someone who has received in depth training. Not so. Anyone can buy a laser, take a few hours of training and use the machine. So much can go wrong. This is a powerful devise that can do wonderful treatments, but can also create problems. I appreciated the fact that W5 interviewed a prominent dermatologist who said that even he, with all his experience, would occasionally have an unexpected event. While at Harvard also, one top rated physician said she too had clients that had a burn despite her expertise. One is dealing with skin, which is an integral part of our body - so can react in unpredictable ways. Not only should the technician be properly trained, but the clinic should be able to deal with problems that arise. Have antiviral medications been prescribed prior to the laser if appropriate, has a medication list been taken? These are just a couple of examples. fM: Your educational background is extensive and impressive. Why is this so imporant to you and your practice?

Dr. Rice: Ongoing education is extremely important to me as a health care provider. Clients come asking for advice and it is my mission to be able to provide information on the most recent and effective treatments. If there is a condition I am unable to diagnose or treat, I will refer to my colleagues such as a plastic surgeon or dermatologist. It is disheartening to see how many clients sometimes pay thousands of dollars for treatments elsewhere that do not work. This field of medical esthetics is a very dynamic one. New procedures or products are constantly being developed. There are many costly procedures and treatments being done by some clinics that have not been shown to be significantly effective. Expensive machines come and go. That is why I do not rely on the “latest and greatest” technology. I do what works. We know there is individual variability to treatment response, but this is explained to our clients. fM: If you could share one simple skin care tip with our readers, what would it be? Dr. Rice: The most simple skin care tip is to use a sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 with full spectrum coverage. Topical antioxidants applied prior to the sunscreen help reduce damage significantly. fM: What can be expect from Clarite Laser & medical esthetic services in the future? Dr. Rice: We are always leading with treatments that work. We want the “WOW” and “feel great” factor at affordable prices. Nothing is more rewarding than have a client return reporting that her friends say she looks great but don’t know what she’s done. Right now we are the first clinic in Ottawa to carry a wonderfully effective professional grade skin cleansing devise. All treatments are first tested on myself, as I have very sensitive skin and fear that the acne and rosacea recur. Also, we are the first to carry a new line of a skin lightening treatment. I avoid products that may be harmful or toxic, so our treatments are kinder to the skin. We also will be offering a wellness oriented clinic in the future, providing an alternative ways of helping symptoms associated with the aging process.

COLOURED TIGHTS WITH A TOUCH OF GRUNGE

Vol.6

BY CHARLOTTE HEALEY

FEATURE

156 f ave

Vol.6

Do It Yourself Drip-Dyed Tights What you’ll need: > Sheer nylon pantyhose – neutral colours work best, white tights make the dye pop, but I > prefer to use grey to give it a little subtlety. > 1 Kool-Aid Packet – choose your fave flavour. Cherry, grape and (surprisingly) the blue > packet of tropical punch > all come out as various shades of red, but strawberry-kiwi gives a nice purple to pink shades. > White vinegar > Latex gloves (if you are using Cherry or Grape, they tend to stain) > Embroidery thread or hair elastics (optional)

FEATURE

Washing Instructions: throwing them into the washing machine by themselves in cold water will work a couple times, but the colour will fade. The best way to keep them brilliant is to handwash with plain hand soap and hang dry.

158 f ave

Vol.6

1. Bring a pot of water to boil and stir in your chosen Kool-Aid packet. 2. Give the powder a second to dissolve and then turn the element down to a simmer. Rest a fork in the handle of your pot (to keep the tights from falling onto the hot element). Dip tights into the mixture and rest the end on the fork. 3. Keep them submerged in hot water for 10 or 20 minutes, or until the water is void of colour. 4. Place a mixing bowl in the sink and throw a few splashes of white vinegar into cold water. >>(The white vinegar will set the dye so it doesn’t wash out completely.) Take the tights out >>of the pot and transfer them into the mixing bowl. Knead them a bit with your hands, and >>then rinse them out with more cold water until the water runs clear. 5. Hang dry! 6. If you want to make patterns in your tights tie the embroidery thread or wrap hair elastics >>around both legs for symmetrical effects.
