from the editor If you are a frequent reader of fave Magazine, you know that we do things a little differently. While most publications have released their summer issue months ago and are ready to release their next seasonal issue, fashionistas have equally shifted their attention to all things autumn. We at fave Magazine are still focused on our current season and everything that goes along with it. As you all know, fashion runs a year ahead. It often feels like one can’t really dive into the current season in fashion without being bombarded with the next season’s trends. Our volumes are released weeks into the current season. The reason for this is simple. As an editor, I can release our volumes at the same time as the rest of the fashion publications as the trends are established a year in advance. What I want to see is what folks are doing with the fashions the industry presents to them. I want to see how they wear the trends; how they alter them. More importantly, I’d like to see the different kinds of interpretations people come up with by using thrift store finds, or mixing items from seasons past. I want to learn what people really like or don’t like about what’s currently in stores. Furthermore, most retailers receive shipments of new garments mid-season. For example, this February, every store was flooded with items from the Spring/Summer 2013 collection. Since it’s the start of a new season, it has the most impact on consumers. This is the first time we get our hands on the new trends, and it’s no surprise that everyone gets enthusiastic. However, most of us forget that retailers receive shipments of new items a few months down the road. Consumers often miss out on special accessories, limited time offer items, or previously released garments in new colours. The other area where we try to do things a little different, is our covers. Most magazines feature models or celebrities wearing current summer trends such as bright hues, neons, black & white or The Great Gatsby inspired fashions. While we also enjoy these trends, we’re fascinated with another summer trend: Grunge. This trend was definitely present in Spring/Summer 2013 shows around the world, but got overshadowed by the more colourful styles. Don’t forget to explore what retailers are bringing in now, while working in some thrift store finds. You can easily spice up your summer wardrobe by adding a retro twist and a hint of glam. Have a great summer! Alcides Munoz Jr. Creative Director & Editor

SWIMSUITS By Sienna Vittoria Lee-Coughlin

Summer is here, and swimsuit season has arrived in full bloom. Designers have recreated this staple item in a multitude of new trends, and have revisited and revamped old ones as well. Silhouettes have never ranged greater as bikinis, tankinis, monokinis and more grace the runways. For those of you ladies who prefer to lounge by the water, sip an iced cocktail and take in the sun, slip on a pair of oversized sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat and one of these retro inspired swimsuits. Designer Rochas produced a collection featuring flirtatious summer frocks and high-waisted bikinis evocative of an I Love Lucy episode. Local retailers have been quick to follow. On the other hand, if your idea of swimming actually involves movement in the water, dive in with some waterproof mascara and one of these slip-reliable one-pieces, or a sporty, high-neckline tankini. Lagerfeld proved to us that sporty doesn’t necessarily mean plain and homely with his elegant one-pieces from the new Chanel resort-wear collection. Never look back with new, cutting-edge swimsuits made with architectural silhouettes. Cut-outs, diagonal lines and sharp angles reminiscent of an early Richard Serra sculpture, have appeared on the runways of young designers like Jason Wu.

MUST HAVES 1. Hot in Ombre By Geneviève Peeke It’s finally summertime and I could not be more excited! Summer is the time to relax and have some fun – especially with your accessories. I love bright and bold accessories that stand out and make a statement against your outfit.

Ombre is a huge trend right now and it can make even more of an unexpected pop in accessories. It is especially fun on shoes, bags and scarves, and it will be absolutely everywhere this season. Choose a colourful option and you are ready for any summer event that may await you.

Accessories are the one thing that everyone can be a little brave with. If you’re scared of a certain summer trend, try it in your accessories. Turn a drab and typical summer outfit into one that will turn heads. After all, that’s what accessories are all about!

2. Hat Hat Heat

Baseball-style caps are everywhere at the moment, but I’m not talking about that old soccer team hat that you have stashed away in the back of your front closet! There are two ways to go about this trend: 1) Bright statement 2) Sleek and subtle. I’m a big fan of the sleek ones since I saw some amazing leather styles on the runways of Montreal Fashion Week!

3. Cool Cuffs Big statement cuffs are the perfect accessory for your wrist or arm this season. Gold is especially nice, but there are also some funky and colourful options out there in case that’s more your style. I promise you will be feeling like an Egyptian princess in no time!

CEDRIC

NEONART www.facebook.com/CedricGigouxPhotography

Lacking proper education in photography, Cedric Gigoux chooses not to identify as a photographer, but as a 20 year old creative artist instead, using the term only to fit within his medium. He shares the details of his upbringing, his artistic influences, his vision as well as his future plans with fave Magazine. Born in the outskirts of Ottawa in Bourget, Ontario, a small town with a grand population of approximately 1500 people, Cedric was the older of two boys and grew up in what he calls The Glory Days of Dial-Up Internet. “I had little exposure to fashion, arts, and the media as a whole. We could hardly load a webpage on our dial-up connection and television was never our thing.” he confesses. “My mother documented the entirety of my youth through a series of photographs, compiling them into some 20 albums, but that never struck me”. A standardized upbringing according to small town norms meant that breaking out of the box was seen as unconventional and largely misunderstood. “I think the reality of fitting in applies to many people, it’s just tougher when you live in a town where everyone knows you and therefore judges you”, he says. Although fitting in was his best bet, Cedric always stood out as the more emotional kid, but never the artist. He would know the hardships of acceptance in a small community versus the vastly more accepting city, since he later attended De La Salle Public High School in Ottawa. Having applied for a High Skills Major program in literary arts, Cedric dedicated 4 years of his life to writing monologues, not taking pictures. The “mistake” (as he calls it) of choosing to study literary arts over visual or media arts is what he attributes to his making it as a person and an artist. A poet at heart, words became what images are for most; compelling and inspiring. Relying on nothing other than grouping of letters and characters to express his thoughts, he created an artistic utopia starring himself as the protagonist and subsequently trained his creativity through a mixture of words that paradoxically fit together to create vivid mental images. Photography is something he picked as a side interest around the age of 15 after shooting a series of landscape images in and around his house with a point & shoot camera. “I really thought I was doing something good. I would edit my pictures on Adobe Premiere Elements, video editing software, so you can only imagine the outcome. Thereafter, I slowly transitioned towards portraits, shooting pictures of friends and family. We all have beginnings I suppose”, he mentions sarcastically. “At that point in my life I was following other various Canadian artists via the Internet, such as photographers, makeup artists and models. I looked up to these people as being leaders, in a sense. As an ideal that I would never achieve.”

54 f ave

Then came an unexpected move to Toronto after an unsuccessful year in political science at the University of Ottawa spent in a creative trance. Having nothing to lose, he applied to OCAD University alongside thousands of others applicants and made the cut. Cedric covers up a smirk as he talks about his short, yet eventful, first year in Toronto. “I hated it at first to be honest. I was so disconnected, not knowing a single soul in this city, but the most beautiful thing happened. The very people I had been following since my beginnings in photography were now somehow in my life. I was meeting, collaborating, and building ties with them. The 15 year old me died many times, that’s for sure.” When asked how he processed this unexpected turn of events, Cedric adds “It’s crazy! If someone had walked into that very computer room 5 years ago and had told me that I was going to be working with those people one day, I would have laughed in their face. I’m still overwhelmed”.

Vol.8

As we change topics and discuss the fabrication of his art, Cedric opens up about synesthesia. Synesthesia is a common neurological condition present in many people, but manifests itself differently depending on the individual. For example, Cedric explains that he experiences letters and numbers as variations in colours, based on positivity and negativity. “It may sound a bit odd, but synesthesia is real. When I was a child I would talk to my mom in colours to describe my emotions. I was either blue (positive) or grey (negative). Then there are numbers. They all have different colours. The number 4 has always been green in my mind, and the number 9 is purple. Any other variant doesn’t seem logical.” He attributes this condition or “colour obsession” as he states, to television shows he watched as a child. Power Rangers, Sailor Moon & Care Bears are at the condition’s core, and as ridiculous as it may sound, if you take the time to analyze the structure of each TV show, each character is represented by a solid colour that represents not only their physique, but becomes their personality and their psychological traits. “I simply view colours as an extension of the mind. The use of colour in my photography is essential, as it becomes what words are to a book, they create a physical and psychological context outside of reality.” This notion is directly represented in his art as well. Bright and bold colours are used to get the audience’s attention, set a mood, and ultimately materialize an artistic ideal. The hardest question Cedric has ever had to answer may surprise you. “What is your favorite colour? I mean, how can I conform to simply one reality? I like to think of myself as a chameleon, forever in a state of change. You can only imagine how conflicted I am at the thought of purchasing a phone case.” he says with a smile while looking at his neon blue case on a white iPhone. “The blue Power Ranger and Sailor Mercury were pretty cool, I must say.” Cedric styles and creates accessories for his shoots. See his candy inspired pieces in the CANDY MITOSIS fashion story.

By Megan Weckwerth - Model search contest winner. I was recently asked by Creative Director and Editor of fave Magazine to write about my experience winning this magazine’s spring 2013 model search contest. The journey to winning fave Magazine’s model search contest actually began three years ago, when I was first introduced to the Ottawa fashion industry by attending a modeling summer camp program. From the very first day, I was hooked. Every part of the program - from the fashion field-trip at the Rideau Centre to the runway show for family and friends - made me want to learn more. That simple summer camp turned into a professional modeling program and a series of acting workshops. I had small successes in the two years that followed the summer camp, which included being part of a corporate video and an independent short-film. Then, a year ago, I walked into the office of Angie’s Models & Talent International and was instantly impressed with Angie Sakla-Seymour’s honesty and professionalism. My experience helped me become an excited member of her team. With Angie’s guidance, I had a test photo shoot, but never expected that one of the pictures taken would eventually help me win fave Magazine’s model search contest. In March of 2013, I entered the contest with a headshot from my test shoot. It was a complete shock when the magazine chose me to be one of the top twenty finalists. I then became part of the top six with the help of my supportive family and many friends, who voted fiercely up until the final hour. I received almost 800 votes through fave Magazine’s Facebook page. I’ll never forget the excitement of that last hour of voting. It was extremely competitive between me and five other stunning candidates. Continued on the next page.

he non-stop voting ended at midnight. With a sigh of relief, I knew it was out of my hands; the final decision now up to the fave Magazine team. It seemed like my luck would end and being in the top six would be enough of a prize. Being announced as the winner was the icing-on-the-cake and receiving the prize package was the cherry-on-top.

M Most people wonder what it would be like to live the life of a fashion model. Nowadays, it seems one can’t turn on the TV without seeing promos geared toward young women encouraging them to participate in reality programs that prey on their hopes of becoming a model. We’ve seen this in the music industry, but of course those programs appeal to aspiring signers. Before the existence of reality TV contests, singers, actors and models had to work in the industry the old fashion way.

Regardless of the method to reach stardom in the fashion industry, a young woman has to possess qualities beyond her looks. You see, there are thousands of stunning beauties in the world, but it takes a very special “one-of-a-kind” type of person with an internal magic about them, to be truly magnificent.

Margaux Brooke is one of these extraordinary young women. I am very honoured to have had the opportunity to interview ‘Margaux the Magnificent’.

M FEATURE

fM: You’ve been modelling from a young age and have already accomplished so much. Was modelling something that your parents encouraged you to do or was it something that you wanted to pursue since childhood?

MB: My mom was the one who got me involved with modeling. She heard an ad on the radio for an agency in Georgia looking for child models, and brought me in. The agency signed me that day and the rest is history! fM: What’s it like to be a model in a time where technology/social media is so powerful?

MB: It’s really great. Social media is such an amazing tool to give models a voice, and allows the general public to see a different side of a model that they might not ordinarily see in their work. Cara Delevigne is a great example. She’s a beautiful girl who books all of these glamorous campaigns, but if you go on her Instagram, you can tell she is a laid back, outgoing chick with loads of personality.

fM: I have to ask this question because we are a Canadian magazine and Canadian Supermodel Coco Rocha is one of our ultimate faves. You not only had the chance to meet her, but also the opportunity to work with her. So, please tell us, what was it like to have that time with one of your idols? MB: It was incredible. Not only is Coco one of the most genuine people that I’ve ever met, she’s also extremely intelligent and innovative. She knows where the fashion industry is headed and tends to stay a few steps ahead. As a mentee, I’ve learned so much from her; not only when it comes to modeling, but social media as well. Coco greatly improved my walk, posing, expressions and confidence. She also helped

72 f ave

Vol.8

me improve my social media presence and taught me how to market myself during and after the show. I feel so honoured to call her my mentor, but I’m even more grateful to call her my friend. fM: Who would you say has influenced your personal style? How has it changed throughout the years?

MB: I can’t really name one person who has influenced my personal style, I think it’s more what I’ve seen in magazines and on the internet. The “model of duty” look is pretty similar for the mass majority of models today. We all tend to go for the jeans, boots, tank or tee and leather jacket combo. I really love minimalistic comfort, but I also really enjoy the occasions where I get to dress up for an event. I like when I get to be a little more expressive with my wardrobe. For instance, I just went to an industry party a few weeks ago, and wore an all-white ensemble. The following week, I did a classic black ensemble. It’s fun to switch it up. fM: Our readers are dying to know your personal faves. Tell us some of your current favourite things.

MB: As far as fave colours, I’m really into white right now. I guess that’s more the absence of colour, but I think it’s so elegant, and really makes you stand out from the crowd. I really love the crazy prints that are trending this season. I’m usually dressed mostly in black, so it’s exciting to step out of my comfort zone and wear clothing that’s a little loud. I’m also really enjoying the geometric cuts combined with the monochromatic trend. It’s a very ‘60s season. I love it. My fav designers this season are definitely Balmain and Fausto Puglisi. They’re both delving in structure and patterns that are really amazing.

fM: Margaux, we think you are magical. For every editorial, you transform. Hair, makeup and lighting all play a part, but you take it to another level. From your ever-changing poses to the many moods you create with expression, you are one of the very few that are truly born to be a supermodel. Many of our readers are also aspiring models. What advice would you share with them? MB: My advice for aspiring models is to realize how much work this career takes. It isn’t like in the movies. It’s a lot of driving to castings day after day, constant rejection, long hours of shooting in terrible weather conditions, and then waiting for months to get paid. However, it is also unlike any other job out there. If you have the looks, the passion and the drive, there’s nowhere you can’t go with a modeling career. fM: In all your years of modelling, what has been the most rewarding moment or experience so far? MB: Probably the first time I ever saw myself on television. It was during the Oscars in 2011 when my JCPenney commercial came on. I nearly died from excitement. Magazine campaigns, covers and billboards are all amazing, but there is something special about seeing yourself on TV for the first time. It’s the same place I watched all my favourite Disney princesses as a little girl, so there was definitely a feeling of whimsy and accomplishment that rushed over me the first time I saw it. fM: You are currently studying journalism. Will you be focusing on fashion journalism when you finish your studies?

When I finish my degree, I might go into fashion journalism, but I might just stick with modeling and acting. Only time will tell. fM: If you had the opportunity to work with anyone in the fashion industry, who would it be and why? MB: I would want to work with Vogue. I’m not picky. It could be American Vogue or Italia or Spain, but I definitely want to work with Vogue. I feel like that’s the sign that you’ve made it when you’re in a Vogue editorial. If I ever get to work with them, I will know that all of my hard work has paid off and that I’ve reached a huge and important milestone in my career. fM: Is there anything that you are currently working on that you could share with us? MB: I have a commercial coming out soon that I am pretty excited about, but I can’t really say what it’s for yet. I did a music video that just came out where I play the female lead alongside the lead singer of The Maine. The song is called “These Four Words”. The video was filmed as one single shot. The film is very raw, emotional and simplistic, and I think the meaning behind it is very relatable to a lot of people. I was very excited to be given this opportunity by the director Daniel James Gomes, because it was the chance to really push my acting ability and begin to expand my creativity as an artist.

MB: It’s hard to say. I do love writing, but now that I’ve taken a year off and have really submerged myself in the modeling and entertainment industry, I’ve become more interested in photography and acting.
