from the editor Summer in Canada seems to fly by so quickly.

FAVET

After a lingering winter that almost robbed us of spring, summer is certainly being celebrated to the fullest. From picnics to outdoor evening galas, we are taking advantage of this stretch of beautiful weather day and night. Fashion plays an important role in all of these outdoor activities; especially knowing that the heat of the season may not last as long as we’d like it to. Over the past few months, I’ve dedicated a fair amount of time to people watching in the city and during my travels abroad. This was a particularly enjoyable task for me as it is one of my favourite things to do. A window seat in a coffee shop at a busy intersection is ideal. I prefer to face the window so that I’m able to look out onto the street, and while working away on my laptop, will take notes on what people are wearing. I’m fascinated with how creative people can be; how they tweak or interpret different trends, or have completely opposing styles. After an afternoon gazing away, here are my findings: 1. Mesh tops and mesh shoes - anything with mesh was a hit. 2. Crop tops are certainly very popular and were usually paired with short-shorts. (Any other pairings also looked great) 3. The sport trend was everywhere. People adopted it with several variations, but the most common sighting was the use of vintage sportswear to complement an outfit. The evening outfits were more interesting, daring and fun; a bit of a free-for-all, so to speak. Lots of leather, miniskirts, see-through fabrics, cut-out panels, and short-shorts made their way down the street with plenty of embellishments that took a daytime look to night. However, one thing stood out the most: perfect accessories for summer hair. I absolutely love how flirty and sexy summer hair can be with its textures, curls and waves. Many gals embraced their long, natural waves, but those choosing to wear it up in a loose bun also had an effortless look. Everyone has a special glow and a joyful energy this time of year. It’s wonderful and contagious. I would like to dedicate this issue to all the fashionistas out there who truly enjoy fashion and have fun with it. You inspire us! I hope you enjoy this issue as much as we enjoyed putting it together! Alcides Munoz Jr. Creative Director & Editor

Mini Midi Maxi: How low will it go? By Sienna Vittoria Lee-Coughlin

In its simplest form, the skirt is a large swath of fabric draped and fastened at the waist. What makes it unique is the way the designer or seamstress manipulates that fabric through the addition of pleats, gathers, darts, gores, panels, and of course, the choice of length. Since the first straw-woven skirt was found in 4000 B.C. in Armenia, countless nations have played around with the silhouette. Sarongs in Africa, the wraparound sheath in ancient Egypt and the kilt in Scotland are just a few examples. The French maidens and mistresses in the Palace of Versailles followed Marie Antoinette through the doors sideways due to the extreme width of their skirts, and later on, Jane Austen’s bonneted heroines were clad in their full, round petticoats as they danced. With the First World War came modernity, and the youth hiked up their skirts above the ankle for the first time, in all their Gatsby-esque glory. As the years went on, the hemlines went up, until the miniskirts of the Mod Sixties were barely long enough to cover what was necessary to be covered. Since then, fashion has been a repeated cycle: the miniskirts of the sixties, the midi skirts of the elegant forties and the maxi skirts of the past. This summer, don’t limit yourself to one length, as they are all in style.

FEATURE

Africa’s NextTop Model Taking over the world

160 faveMagazine 2.5

FM: As you know, we are big fans of your work and the Top Model franchise. How has your life changed since winning Africa’s Next Top Model? Aamito: Thank you. Ah! A lot has changed since winning antm. I travel a lot more for work, and a lot more work comes my way - which is a good thing. I am recognized everywhere I go over here, so there are big changes, but I am not complaining. FM: If you could turn back time, would you have done anything different during the show? Aamito: Nothing at all. I believe that what I did was the best that I could do at that particular time, and I don’t have any regrets. FM: When did you start modeling? How did it all happen for you? Aamito: Well, I was about 16-years-old when it all started. I was told that modelling would give me a few extra bucks, so I thought “Why not?” I joined an agency called Arapapa Models in Uganda, and as they say, the rest is history. FM: It must of been a dream come true to work with Oluchi. Can you tell us what it was like? What was the best piece of advice you got from Oluchi? Aamito: Yes, it was a dream come true. She is a true icon. The best piece of advice I got from her was to always smile so that the universe can give you more. In other words, be grateful for what you have and you will always get more. FM: Elle Magazine and Marie Claire are just some of the magazines you have appeared in. Tell us what these experiences were like for you. Aamito: These magazines are great platforms to launch a big career in the industry, so working with them is a great honour.

FM: What has been the most challenging part of the modeling industry so far? Aamito: Keeping in shape. Many people out there think it’s a walk in the park, but hey will shocked when they find out how hard we work. Every casting is a job interview. Imagine if you have to go for a job interview every day of your life! FM: Our magazine is about our favourite things related to fashion and beauty. Can you tell us what your favourite trend is at the moment? How about your favourite beauty product? Aamito: I love my jeans! As a model, I get to wear all these expensive and luxurious things, so during my off time, I usually wear a trendy top and jeans, or a short skirt and vest. I top it off with a funky jacket. As for products, I use the Iman BB cream. It’s light, and moisturizes my skin really nicely. It works well for me, and it’s a great base for the fantastic makeup artist that I get to work with. FM: I need to ask you to share a beauty secret, but I want to focus on internal beauty. What is your secret to balancing family, friends, modeling and time for yourself? Aamito: Smiling all the time. It makes everything in life balanced. It makes you look young and energizes your spirit. I also love to meditate. It’s all a great recipe to make everything work. FM: What advice can you share with our readers who want to pursue a career in modeling? Aamito: It’s not easy, but it’s worth it. Keep at it. FM: What’s next for Aamito? What can we expect to see over the next little while? Aamito: I hate to let the kitten out of the bag, but when the time is right, you will be the first to know.

FEATURE A product or ideology thrives best when the branding foundation is solid, and when it is nurtured and maintained by strong public relations. Using a spokesperson or notable public figure in all avenues of advertising is quite advantageous when they’re utilized in a relevant environment that speaks personally to the interests of its target. Therefore, using a globally recognized face works best in garnering much attention. Upon choosing someone fit for the masses, the goal is to focus on what attribute the viewing public most desires to mirror. It could be anything from a slew of physical traits to what they’re wearing, eating or drinking; even a way of thinking or lifestyle. When consumers are buying into what will help them achieve what they desire most, the credibility of the brand goes up. Any marketing class will tell you that there are at least five steps that a team of strategic thinkers will take to build and maintain a brand when specifically linking themselves to an individual: 1. Influencing the public 2. Awareness 3. Positioning 4. Recruitment of a new audience 5. Rebranding While moving through this branding cycle, the purpose is to simply grow a positive reputation and boost the established brand. Though an initial partnership has a recipe for success, any absent-minded slipup (personal or professional) from the brand ambassador could lead to a public relations nightmare. Extreme cases have forced companies back to the drawing board; relieving people out of their contracts for fear of being associated with their scandals. The issue here is not only do you play with your own reputation, you play with the reputation of what and who you choose to represent. I’d like to believe we all realize that to err is human. It is. Unfortunately, when linking yourself to a brand, you consequently link yourself to money and influence. Taking on this role not only forces one to identify and refine strengths and talents, it also requires an acute understanding of the perceptions of others. With that thought in mind, I spent time thinking about the women we’re drawn to; about the figures we respect and admire on the international stage that are influencing many of our choices on a daily basis. They have helped carry, define, build and secure a brand’s direction and relevance in society. The brands they represent directly are at times not synonymous with trying to push and sell tangible objects for profit (although that does come into play), but are more intent on loyalty and interest to ensure the survival of a much stronger message. That being said, the fashion industry has brilliantly made itself a major player in this branding equation. Here’s a look at a few examples of past and current female public figures whose statements were not only fashionable, but are linked to our social, political and cultural fabric.

FEATURE POLITICAL PERFECTION

(Brand: International and Political Affiliations)

THEN

Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis:

First Lady of the United States from 1961 to 1963, she was a global fashion icon known for her elegance and style while playing a key role in the success of John F. Kennedy’s presidential campaign. She took great pride in contributing to the arts and preservation of historic architecture. After life in the White House, she later enjoyed a 10-year career as a book editor with Viking Press in New York City.

NOW

Michelle Obama:

Assuming the role of First Lady of the United States in 2009, she has become a strong role model for women and an advocate for nutrition and physical fitness. The Chicago-born lawyer and writer has also taken a role in raising poverty awareness, promoting arts and education, and is also a strong supporter of LGBT rights. Aside from having a classic and confident look, she has been listed as one of the world’s most inspiring women.

REGAL AND READY-TO-WEAR (Brand: The British Monarchy) THEN

Diana, Princess of Wales:

After becoming the Princess of Wales in 1981, she took on a major role as patron for numerous charities. Of the hundreds of organizations associated with her, she was particularly interested in causes relating to AIDS, terminal illnesses and drug addiction. She also campaigned against landmines in 1997. Being one of the most photographed women in the world, fashion designers jumped at the chance to have her snapped wearing their ensembles. Despite the scandalous and turbulent years that accompanied her separation and divorce, her ability to connect and empathize with many solidified her as The People’s Princess.

NOW

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge:

Becoming a member of the Royal Family in 2011 and mother to the new heir to the throne in 2013, she has quickly established her role working with and supporting many charities involving the arts, drug addiction and palliative care. She also volunteers with the north Wales’ Scout Association. She has just begun her journey as a royal, but it’s no secret that she has a large following that occupy a keen interest in fashion, and has been praised for her sophisticated and accessible style. Most of everything she wears sells out minutes after she’s photographed. “The Kate Effect” does not lie.

FEATURE TAILORED TV HOSTS

(Brand: Television/Production – Broadcasters)

THEN

Barbara Walters:

While breaking the glass ceiling of a male-dominated newsroom, the American broadcast journalist and author has graced our television sets since 1961. Her article “How to Talk to Practically Anyone About Practically Anything” – meant to help the socially awkward - was expanded into a book in 1970 and continues to sell hundreds of thousands of copies worldwide. Known for her work with ABC’s 20/20 and The View, her interview abilities have enabled her to converse with countless political figureheads, controversial leaders and influential pop culture icons. She is an inductee of the Television Hall of Fame.

NOW

Oprah Winfrey:

Wearing what seems to be many hats in the industry, the “Queen of All Media” is ranked as one of the most influential people in the world with diverse markets seeing a spike in sales for just about everything and anything she endorses. With a 25-year run on-air, The Oprah Winfrey Show is the highest-rated talk show in American television history. Also widely known for her extensive philanthropy, she donates hundreds of scholarships to schools each year, and founded the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa. She has received numerous accolades and awards - one of the highest honours bestowed upon her being the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Honourable Mention

Jeanne Beker:

NOW

The Canadian television personality and columnist immediately comes to mind upon hearing Animotion’s 1984 hit “Obession”. Her 27-year run with CTV’s FashionTelevision put her on the front lines of the runway landing interviews with a slew of notable designers and prompted the release of her own fashion line, Edit, at The Bay. She is also highly recognized for her work with HIV/AIDS and cancer awareness organizations. Not only has she won a number of awards for exceptional contributions to television and film, she is also a member of the Order of Canada..

The fave Q&A:

BIANCA WAHAB Stylist Extraordinaire Interview by: Jennifer Lecompte Photo by: Christian Mackie - www.mackiec.ca

FEATURE fM: What influenced your interest in fashion design and styling? BW: I’ve always had a creative, imaginative spirit, and starting early on, never wanted to be like anyone else. I wanted to express myself in my own way. I quickly learned that fashion was an awesome venue to release that creativity (amongst drawing and crafting) and started picking out patterns with my mom to create clothes for me. It all just blossomed from there! After school and starting my own leather handbag line, styling was a natural venue to explore as well. I really enjoy it. fM: Having perfected your skills with the Richard Robinson Academy of Fashion Design, what areas of the program did you particularly enjoy? What advice would you give to prospective students looking to enroll? BW: I may sound crazy, but I loved the haute couture aspect because I love sewing by hand. Even beading and embroidery too! Basically, anything time consuming! I just love intense details like that. It makes a piece unique and its own. Sketching was another area I also loved! To anyone enrolling in Fashion Design, I would suggest making sure you pick a program that really covers industry standards so you meet all requirements when looking for jobs in fashion – especially computer design and working with industrial machines. Patience is really a virtue when it comes to fashion design. Who knows how many people I have seen cry up to this point! Errors and mistakes will happen, and they won’t be an easy quick fix. Take it in stride and work hard now, so you can enjoy the rewards later! fM: How do you express your creativity when you’re away from your trusty sewing machine? BW: Anyway I can really! Makeup is one of my favourites. I truly enjoy it. I also love interior design! I’m always making little changes to my apartment that end up having big results. It’s a small space, so a little change goes a long way, and I love it.

254 faveMagazine 2.5

I really only would want a big house just so I can decorate it. Tattoos are also really important to me as well, and I have acquired a good handful at this point. Sometimes I wish I was a tattoo artist! I recently came across an artist that tattooed leather, and was very intrigued! Who knows? I’m always learning and taking on new projects! fM: You’ve been an independent consultant for Arbonne for the last 2 years. When it comes to maintaining a beauty regime, what are your tips and tricks for taking care of your skin? BW: This is going to sound cliché, but it is because it’s true! I drink as much water as I can. Trust me. The more you drink it, the more you learn to love it. I also ALWAYS cleanse and moisturize my face. I emphasize ‘always’ because I literally always do. Sick? Washing my face. One too many French 75s? Washing my face. For me, there is never an excuse! It also helps that I’m using amazing products that don’t have chemical fillers, so my skin is getting access to all those wonderful, concentrated essential oils. Working with Arbonne has really changed my life and perspective in such a positive way. I’m so grateful for it! So that glow is on the outside, but also on the inside! fM: Your skin is always so radiant. What beauty/ makeup products hold your highest recommendation? BW:: You’re the best! Really, everything I use is from Arbonne because of the quality, the standards, and I love how they work. But when looking for products, I always recommend looking for something that is mineral oil, paraben, and sulphate free. It’s really important to check what chemicals you could potentially be putting on your skin. Also, I recommend using a brand that doesn’t test on animals. In my opinion, there is no need for this. I already mentioned the importance of cleansing your skin, and moisturizing is just as important. In the morning, I will either use our CC

cream that performs 10 tasks in 1 product (in 1 awesome little bottle), or I will apply our amazing primer and follow that with the liquid foundation. I usually keep the rest simple by applying some blush, filling in my brows and making my lashes awesome with our lengthening mascara. A bright lipstick or muted gloss to follow, depending on what I’m wearing, and how I feel. fM:: Getting back to fashion, what current trend are you enjoying right now? Do you have a favourite that you keep recycling throughout the season? BW: To be honest, I don’t tend to follow trends. Gasp! (laughs) I just do what I like and what I feel looks good on me. If something happens to be a trend, so be it! I’m not really one for pants, so I love summer even more because I get to enjoy all of my dresses. AND I LOVE COLOUR! Can’t get enough! Coral is always a personal favourite. I will say that I love the flower garlands in the hair, festival chic, hippie look, and have pulled different aspects of this look into my own wardrobe.

fM: Tell us about your preferred style for our male readers. What does it take to pull off a great look? BW: I love you for even asking this question! I find fashion for men can sometimes be neglected and it really shouldn’t be. Another reason why I love what we are doing here at fave and faveMen! Again, I think it really is all about balance. Watch out for too many prints going on at once (laughs), pick a great shoe and a classic denim. A good tailored suit is always amazing. Don’t be afraid to go outside of black and go for a lighter grey, and make sure the fit is spot on. Grooming also plays a big role. You know I personally love men with longer hair and some beard (i.e. Matt Mays), but there can be a fine line between messy and sexy scruff! fM: Having styled many pictorials for fave, can you pick a favourite? What messages were you trying to convey with your clothing choices, if any?

BW: One of my favourites was working with Tiffany in “Grunge Glam”. I always love working with her because she can always show any kind fM: Whose style do you admire? Have they influ- of emotion in her face that really translates to what enced you in your personal fashion choices? she is wearing. This shoot was all about mixing the hard with the soft. Lace and white with metal BW: I love Gwen Stefani. She has an awesome jewelry and chain. Sheer polka dot dress with a balance of ‘punk but still a lady going on’ at the huge leather corset style belt. Ballerina style skirt same time, and she pulls it off amazingly well. I with studs. DISCOVERING

JAPAN by Karen Leon

Japan is known as the “Land of the Rising Sun”. It is also known for famous, ever-changing fashion trends. Not only was I lucky enough to visit this beautiful country once, I got the chance to go on the journey a second time! While spending time in Tokyo, the largest metropolitan area in the world, I immediately notice that the style the girls are sporting is out-of-thisworld unique! The fashions range on so many different levels: school girl preppy, business suit professional, edgy urban, fantasy costumes - the list keeps going! Japanese fashion is so extraordinarily diverse and unparalleled. The main fashion hubs that I visited this time around were located in Shibuya, Harajuku, and Akihabara.

In the district of Shibuya, there is an incredible building called Shibuya 109. Within the 10 floors of this department store, you will find all of the mainstream Japanese fashion trends that you could ever imagine! The tastefully merchandised stores that occupied the high-rise were small, but by no means were they a disappointment to my expectations. Surrounded by unique, trendsetting apparel, the variety of styles available were slightly overwhelming! As I walked through each level of the building, I was awe-inspired by an intense flood of Japanese models. It was nearly a culture shock for me. Nonetheless, without this experience, I would have never discovered one of Tokyo’s greatest treasures. I also spent some time in the Harajuku district, where street fashion flourishes! Crowds of fashionistas migrate to its quaint streets to shop at

affordable, hip, trendsetting boutiques. With many local vendors, this area of Tokyo boasted charm and style down every alley. It was very apparent that Harajuku style veered away from mainstream trends. Harajuku girls wear whatever they want. They’re experimental, innovative and they mix and (mis)match to their heart’s desire! You will find the most outrageous shops in the side streets that make up this wonderfully edgy neighbourhood. A visit to Tokyo would not be complete without making a stop in Akihabara. As iconic symbols of Japan like anime (Japanese animation), manga (Japanese graphic novels) and video games line the streets of this district. Looking somewhat like Halloween night, individuals go about their daily lives outfitted in cosplay. Short for Costume Play, cosplay is a unique form of dress-up centered on role-playing. Widely accepted in this area of Tokyo, partakers wear costumes and accessories to embody a specific character or idea. Main sources of inspiration often include video games, comic books, films, anime, and manga. Many shops that cater to this subculture will offer items such as coloured contacts, wigs, costumes, props, and whatever else you need to make your ensemble as accurate as possible to match your desired character. Being on the edge of fashion trends, Japan ranks high in originality and reputation. It is recognized as one of the world’s fashion forecasters. Canadians should definitely learn a thing or two about being fashion forward from them. Having travelled to Japan twice has really opened my eyes. I cannot wait to see what other trends are waiting to be discovered.

Lip scrub, like all other body scrubs, uses a gritty substance that’s used to exfoliate the surface layers when rubbed on your lips. Lip scrubs remove the dead outer surface of your lips, but unlike body scrubs, they are generally safe if ingested. Lip scrubs are made to be sweet and great-tasting so scrubbing is healthy and enjoyable. Removing the dead surface of your lips brings out new fresh layers, making lips soft, smooth, and yes, kissable! If this isn’t enough, there are also other advantages that will make you consider scrubbing your lips. With a smooth surface, lip cosmetics will adhere longer on your lips. This makes lipsticks, lip liner, and lip gloss much more effective and long-lasting.
