from the editor The fashion industry moves. forward so quickly. It seems we are always looking a year ahead of the current season. There is barely any time to truly enjoy the current trends as the new ones have begun trickling down to retails stores everywhere. This is the main reason why we choose to release our issues during the present season. Take fall/winter 2012-2013 for example. It’s a time when most of us are bombarded with enticing images of spring/summer looks that help our minds deal with the toughest winter months. I also enjoy looking at these campaigns and fantasize about the warm weather and the great fashions that go along with it; however, once I step outside, I’m quickly reminded that winter is very much still here.

FAVE Geneviève Peeke, Fashion Blogger Keeping us up-todate on all things fashion and beauty, Gen is one of the most energetic and passionate people you will meet. Ashley Sleeth, Contributor Wearing many hats for fave, she brings a an essential and different point of view to her product and fashion reviews.

So how does one enjoy the current season and embrace the one that’s just around the corner? There are two ways: The first (and this issue will remind you of this) is to take a look at the current wardrobe you acquired months ago to prepare for winter. Think about all the great items you didn’t get your hands on due to budget restrictions, or simply because you didn’t see them first time around. Retailers are having blowout sales to make room for the spring/summer collections, making ‘now’ the perfect opportunity to purchase winter wear. You could be sporting a new coat, hat or scarf and look great for the remainder of the season. If you want to take advantage of these sales to expand your wardrobe for next winter, stick to the classics. Not only will you be ahead for next year, but for years to come. This is a great time to invest on normally high-priced items that are drastically reduced to half or more! The second tip is to start browsing some of the existing spring trends. Find some that you can intermix with your winter wear to create a new transitional “in between season” look. Pops of colour are great. Brighten up those grey, dull winter days by wearing a colourful shirt or blouse underneath your sweater. Flirty-colour leggings, socks, even coloured denim paired up with your rich, winter tones will get you noticed. Let’s not forget, we always have a surprise winter storm in March, and it’s not uncommon to have one during the first week of April. It is wise to keep your current wardrobe and not be tempted to put it away at the first sign of a warmer climate. Let’s have fun and enjoy the rest of winter season!

MUST HAVES By Geneviève Peeke I know it’s cold out there and the last thing on your mind is style, but there’s no need to look sloppy just because the chilly season has arrived!

1. The Combat Boot This kind of boot looks amazing on all types of men! No matter what your personal style, I guarantee this will look great on you and with almost anything you wear this winter. You can find great styles that will keep you warm while making you look like the suave gentleman you are. They work great with your everyday casual clothing and I promise you will love them.

With just a few simple pieces, you can look like a true gentleman when you are out and about during this season.

2. The Military Coat To be honest, it basically doesn’t matter what you are wearing under this! You will look so put together. A coat like this truly works for any occasion. I love all the gorgeous long military-inspired coats that were all over the runways for fall and winter. You will too. You can find some with interesting collars, fun buttons and a nice belt at the waist. The length of this kind of coat will keep you warm and will make you look all dressed-up, even if you’re not. Definitely worth the investment, my friends!

3. The Plaid Tie It may seem a little scary at first, but this kind of tie will make you look so polished. There are so many different colour combinations to choose from and if you’re feeling extra bold, you can even go for a fun bowtie! (This is my latest menswear obsession, to be honest.) You can dress this down a little if you’d like to avoid looking like you just walked off the preppy set of Gossip Girl. These beautiful trendy ties turn heads and will make it seem like you put some extra time into an outfit, when it really only took you five minutes. No one can resist a cute plaid tie!

GROOMING

SMOOTH OPERATOR Agave Hair Smoothing System is the latest product to hit the market in the last year. As a stylist, it has always been important for me to study and research any new products that we receive in the salon. The urban male has so many options for men’s hair care; gels, creams, oils and pomades are flying out of the salons like crazy. So why do I love Agave? Because we finally have a product that is simple to use! Once applied, it gives you a whole new world of options for styling your hair. Let’s face it, no one likes frizzy hair. We put so many products in our hair to achieve that smooth, well-groomed look that most of us risk ending up with a hard-looking helmet head. Not anymore! With Agave Smoothing System, the end result is 100% frizz-free while still maintaining natural volume. The line also carries a shampoo and conditioner that is an absolute must for maintenance. With the results lasting up to 13 weeks, can you imagine putting fewer products in your hair and not having to constantly fight with that curl or frizz? Amazing! You’ll be on your way to experiencing many happy hair days with Agave.

An interview with Frank Restango of Rinaldo Hair Designers & Spa by Alcides M. Photos: Scott Clark

I arrived at the George Street salon about twenty minutes prior to meeting Frank Restango, co-owner of Rinaldo Hair Designers & Spa. I wanted to explore the establishment on my own to get a feel for the atmosphere. Once I stepped through the doors of the beautiful building, there was signage directing me to an elevator designated solely for Rinaldo’s clients. It felt very exclusive. When the doors opened to the salon space, it was like seeing clearly for the first time. I was immediately engulfed in a wave of beautiful soft light. You could not help but notice every detail of the decor. Modern lines and contemporary white furnishings brought a sophisticated and elegant touch. I introduced myself at the reception and asked if I could walk around, since it was my first time there. Warmly welcomed, I was offered a beverage. As I began my excursion, latte in hand, I felt very European. The ambiance was great. With pleasant music, friendly and helpful staff, I had a great first impression. I returned to the waiting area to observe the action on the cutting floor. It was a busy afternoon, but everyone seemed to be having fun. The stylists were engaged and focused on their respective clients. While plenty of conversation lingered in the air, it was not overwhelming to the ear; there was a calmness about it all. Looking dapper, Frank then arrived and introduced himself. “You’re early. Did you get a coffee? Would you like tour?” he asked. The only area I had not yet seen was the Spa, so I decided that the interview should take place there. The atmosphere could not have been more perfect. It was relaxed and comfortable. As we started to chat, I could tell that Frank was proud and passionate about his craft.

FEATURE fM: What was your first position at the salon? FR: I started washing hair, sweeping the floor and helping everyone as an assistant. I did that for about 4 years before deciding to really get into hair. fM: What has changed from the days of being an assistant that made you pursue hairstyling? FR: To be honest, I never really intended to be in this industry. My father is a hairstylist; my uncle is a hairstylist and Rinaldo, of course, is a hairstylist. It seemed like a natural path. I was really into sports in high school. I played hockey all my life. Any type of sport - you name it - I did it. I’m still like that today. In my last year of high school, I registered for TV & Radio program at La Cité Collégiale, but it was limited for non-residents of Ontario. (I live in Aylmer.) I received notice that I was being placed on a waiting list, but I didn’t want to waste any time, so I approached Rinaldo and asked to work full-time. He turned me down at first. This was how he teased me. He then said “Well, ok. Yes.”. A year had gone by and I was still waiting to get into that TV & Radio program, but at that point I was involved in the salon and learned so much, that I decided to give it a shot. I already had developed relationships with clients and staff, so I felt at home. fM: Where did you attend hairstyling school? FR: Well, my training started within the salon. I learned mostly for Rinaldo himself and other stylists. There was a stylist named Kevin back in the day that Rinaldo approached to train me. We started one night a week with the clients I had, and I learned the fundamentals that way. From there, I started to take a lot of courses with Sebastian at California TIGI, as well as plenty of classes in Toronto through our distributor. I then registered with the Ministry of Apprenticeship and because I had so many hours, I was allowed to write the exam. fM: Out of all the different aspects of hairdressing, is there a side you lean toward the most? FR: I’m enjoying the new management side of things, but I truly enjoy teaching. I went for extensive training with Tony & Guy and am currently going through another with Sassoon. I now try to share my knowledge with the “newbies” so they can have confidence and presence apart from the required skills. It’s important when working with clients.

fM: You’ve been part of the hair industry since the 90’s. It’s a very transient industry. What do you feel you have done differently to still be a part of it while loving it? FR: Passion. I think a lot of people have the passion, and it’s not just in this industry. If you don’t have the passion for what you do, then you really don’t love what you do. You’ll get bored with it and you’ll never be the best you can be, or try to be the best you can be.

If you have that passion, you’ll always want to continue learning. fM: Do you see yourself more in a teacher role than what you are currently doing? FR: I do. That’s why I have to keep up with all of the education to keep myself motivated, passionate and knowledgeable so that I am able to give back and pass it onto others as well. It’s hard, because I’m not at the point where I can just do that. I’m only 36 years old. For this industry, that’s quite young. You don’t have to retire if you are still healthy and have the passion. Rinaldo is a perfect example of that. I do see myself branching out. We’ve already started an educational program for students coming out of school or co-op. They are still not ready to hit the floor at the salon, so they can learn while working. We have weekly classes and other training. We are an education-driven salon and it’s the core of our mission statement and values. fM: What has been your biggest challenge to date? FR: Other than when I got started and while trying to decide what I wanted to do?

FEATURE

When I was training, I just wanted to throw everything. I remember wrapping my first perm and wanting to go home and cry “I can’t do this”, but really, it’s trying to keep up with all I’ve learned. I’ve evolved so much and learned so much from everyone around me, even from my clients, so trying to take it all in at such a fast rate is challenging. Oh yes! That, and patience. My children remind me of myself, so yes, patience too. fM: On the flip side, what has been your biggest accomplishment since you started? FR: The education system at the level that I’m involved in. That has been really rewarding for me at a personal level. Being able to start to teach and taking over the salon back in April - that was a great opportunity and an honour for me; especially with working here all of my life. This is where I grew up. This is my home. fM: There have been a few changes with locations and management. How do you feel this has affected the team and clients? FR: Yes, there have been a few changes over the past 5 years. First, we moved from the World Exchange Plaza. We sort of split the business into 3

26 f ave

Vol.5

locations. That was a bit hard on the staff, because it was the first time we were apart. I think the clients felt it too, obviously. It wasn’t what our clients were used to. Then when we moved to George Street another transition. Everyone couldn’t wait to get in here. It’s a beautiful space, and being in the market, there is a great energy here. We had some issues with the city when we first moved here, so it created an inconvenience for our clients, but they all stood by us. It speaks to the loyalty they have for us. We continue to raise the bar and keep our clients excited while providing excellent service. fM: You seem to be creating a different environment for your clients by selling amazing jewellery from Osolee and host events in partnership with Erica Wark. How did that come about and will you continue to do more? FR: We always try to associate with the best people. That’s the key. You are only as good as the people you are surrounded by - whether it’s jewellery experts or fashion stylist. This is my partner, Fiorella’s domain. Our clients really enjoy it. We also do events outside the salon that are equally as exciting for us as for our clients.

fM: What do you feel sets you apart from the rest of the salons in Ottawa? FR: Education. Like I mentioned earlier, it’s at the core of what we do. The service is one thing, but the education is the result of it all. The best in the world never stop learning and they want to share. fM: Tell me more about the Spa? FR: The spa has been part of Rinaldo’s since ’98 when it was located at the World Exchange Plaza. The experience of the spa is fantastic. For me, it’s all about the facials. Your skin will love you for it. I remember the first time one of the service providers asked me to get a facial. I had no idea what she was going to do to me. For over an hour and 20 minutes, I was probably snoring. The facial is not just a “facial”. They are customized for you. I recently did some training for a Sinus Detox Facial, and I was very intrigued. Other popular services are the pedicures and manicures. We offer a wide range of services.

fM: Do you see your children coming into this industry as well? FR: I think about it. My wife and I talk about it. If I had to pick one (and I could totally be wrong) it would be my daughter. Who knows? Look how I fell into it. My oldest son is 8, my daughter is 6 and my youngest son is 4. They are all so different, but my daughter has the artistic side. She is also quite the character. We joke that she’ll be running the place in a few years. As parents, we want our children to succeed. As long as they are happy, I will support them in whatever they are passionate about.

fM: As you know, we also publish faveMEN. What can you tell me about your male clientele? FR: I’d say they comprise around 30% of clients, and we have been getting more and more of them over the past few years. The industry for men has opened up. There are many lines coming out targeted towards men. More men are putting an effort into using the right products; especially after a facial. It all starts with the girlfriends and the wives. They always ask: “Do you provide services for men here?” I have to tell you, men are the most loyal clients. You provide them with a great service and they like to be told what products are best for them. They like to be well-groomed. We have a lot of young businessmen, but the older ones come in as well. fM: What would be the next big thing for Rinaldo Hair Designers & Spa? FR: We’ve had this discussion with my partners. It would be to have an academy. I don’t know what the size would be and at what level, but I’d love to have an academy where students could learn. We have all the experts here. I can envision having an updo specialist, makeup specialists, colour specialists and cutting specialists that would continuously make the program evolve. I don’t believe in the way it’s done now. They print out books that have been used for years with same content. I don’t mean any disrespect to the people that teach that, but some of the same people have teaching for 30 years without any evolution. It needs to change as the industry, products and technology change.
