Concept 1 - Structure Cross Structure is often used in traditional Chinese architecture to support cantilever and also becomes a typical form. In contemporary architecture Asian architects try use this traditional structure to create a modern form. We want to apply modern constructions to the classical structure and make a combination of eastern and western architecture.

Concept 2 - Site 'Kuang Jing' is a traditional strategy used in Chinese garden design, that is to make a frame to capture a specific scenery. In our site, there is a beautiful courtyard but few people notice it. We want to use our structure to make a frame, so that people will be attracted by the beautiful scenery and come in to enjoy it.

Development - Unit and Connections

ELDER PEOPLE SITUATION IN CHINA In China the number of elder people is rapidly increasing every year. However, the improvement of senior welfare has not caught up with the requirement of senior people. Firstly, the government hasn't spent enough money in elder care system so the organization of senior houses in China is kind of a mess. Besides, there's a deeply-rooted bias in typical Chinese's mind that living in a senior house is a big shame, because that implies their children don't want to take care of them.

SITE ANALYSIS The site is in a crowded residential area full of 6 to 7-floored living buildings built 20 years ago. There's a busy market nearby, which sells fruit, vegitables and fish. A lot of old peopl e live in the neighbourhood, who buy the household and cook the meals for their families. The urban area is so tense that there's a lack of open public space and the elder couldn't find a place to do exercise, relax themselves and communicate with each other.

Based on the actual conditions of the site, we arrange the medical points according to different neighborhoods. One point will take charge of a specific area.

According to the existing chess/card rooms we can find people on the south spend more time in playing chess and cards.

UNIT Containers can be assembled rapidly and are cheap and green. The form itself is also special and artistic. When budget is tight or the time is limited for the project, container construction has a obvious superiority. Containers are strong and easy to be transported, which are suitable to be the media for urban acupuncture. We use a single container as our unit, to arrange it in different ways, that could form modular functional volumes.
