You should get to know us better. You really should. It’s only then that you’ll find out why bottlenose dolphins and red kites like Ceredigion so much. Or how it’s possible to go walking on a heavenly coast path in the morning and high in mountainous ‘Wild Wales’ in the afternoon. Or how a region can be very Welsh and very worldly at the same time, with traditional country inns and trendy coastal hotels – and a thriving cultural identity that’s about the future as much as the past. And where roads and country lanes are worth following for the sheer pleasure of what you’ll find along the way. You really need to put a bit of Ceredigion into your life. Come and meet the Cardis.

e’re one of Britain’s tastiest stretches of coastline. Small resorts, big views, and green countryside rolling down to the sea. Headlands and smugglers’ haunts, and little seafaring ports that - with the revival of the seaside holiday - have become fashionable resorts for chill-out weekends and full-on family holidays. From Cardigan in the south to Borth and beyond up north, our gently arcing seashore, much of it protected Heritage Coast, is dotted with award-winning beaches - Blue Flag, Seaside Award and Green Coast Award. Go elsewhere for noisy, kiss-me-quick funfairs. We’re all about the timeless pleasures of sand between your toes, rock pools, wildlife and the cleanest of clean beaches.

Local knowledge • Where are those perfect beaches? Well, everywhere. Mwnt, for example, is a half-moon of sand framed by headlands, with starfish on the beach and whitewashed church above. And nothing else. • Aberystwyth is Victorian through and through. Promenade along the prom. Ride the cliff railway up Constitution Hill. Peer through the world’s largest camera obscura at the top. • Go all Georgian at Aberaeron, the trendy, foodie, fabulously pretty little seaport. • Pay your dues at New Quay - one shilling for every case of coconuts or ton of turnips, according to a 19th-century list of harbour tolls still on display.

wo gorgeous estuaries linked by the Ceredigion Coast Path. There are more photo opportunities than your smartphone can handle along its 60 miles - which also, incidentally, neatly join Pembrokeshire with Snowdonia. In the greater scheme of things our coast path is part of the new 870-mile Wales Coast Path, but unless you’re a mileage-hungry marathon junkie you’ll much prefer the comfy, bite-sized chunks we specialise in, so take it in your stride. But just because you get to walk along beaches don’t think it’s all flat. You’ll clamber up to Iron Age hillforts for seabird’s-eye views across Cardigan Bay, and dip down to secluded smugglers’ coves hidden amongst the rocks.

That’s the feeling you get when you venture out onto Ynys Lochtyn, a narrow promontory near Llangrannog. • Catch the Cardi Bach, the hop-on, hop-off bus service between Cardigan and New Quay - perfect for coastal walkers. Country Life
Ynyslas
‘I
Forests, lakes and rivers. Valleys, towns and villages. Country life - Ceredigion style t’s proper country life in proper countryside – by which we mean a traditional, working landscape of cattle and sheep farms, small but robust market towns, rolling farmlands, country shows and fairs, coracles and chapels. Ceredigion is the real thing, quintessential Welsh countryside with a ruddy face and muddy boots, and a heartbeat that still keeps time with the rhythm of the seasons. Water plays its part along with land. Rivers flow down from the mountains to the sea, carving idyllic wooded valleys and waterfalls along the way. And we’re the spiritual home of the Welsh mountain pony and cob, prized breeds that evoke an especially deep passion in these parts.

‘Wild Wales’
Cambrian Mountains/Mynyddoedd y Cambria
‘W
I saw a very lofty mountain in the far distance, a hill right before me, and, on my left, a meadow overhung by the southern hill George Borrow
ild Wales, that’s what 19th-century traveller and writer George Borrow called his book. If he were rewriting it today he wouldn’t need to change much about the Cambrian Mountains. Rising in Pumlumon - also the source of the mighty Severn and Wye rivers - this high country of compelling emptiness defies civilisation. It’s a 760-square-mile vastness of heather, moor and forest, mountain lakes and hill sheep farms. Towns and villages are few and far between, save for settlements around its fringes like Talybont, Tregaron, Ponterwyd and Pontrhydygroes. Neither are there many roads - and those that do exist follow the footsteps of drovers, medieval monks and silver-lead miners across the ‘roof of Wales’.

etting wet is half the fun of watersports. The other half is enjoying them in stunning surroundings. That’s where we come in. Our Heritage Coast is awash with all kinds of aqua activities. Explore sea caves and hidden beaches by kayak, getting up close to seals, dolphins and seabirds. Learn how to sail a dinghy, surf or windsurf. Or paddle a canoe in the rapids of the River Teifi. Sailing enthusiasts soak up our salty maritime heritage, calling into historic harbours like New Quay and Aberaeron - with Cardigan Bay’s big, blue yonder beckoning. And fishermen love our world-class sea and river angling for bass, salmon and sewin (our name for sea-trout) - and there’s excellent coarse fishing too.

lthough we have lots of churches and chapels we’re not just talking about our religious heritage. It’s more a reference to the spirit and culture of Ceredigion, a region of Welsh-speaking communities and traditional values, and proud to share its heritage with everyone. Quite apart from the guaranteed croeso - that warm Welsh welcome - you’ll be in a part of Wales with a rich tapestry of heritage sites and trails. And talking of tapestries, another chapter in our story includes woollen weaving and - this may come as a surprise - silver, lead, copper, gold and zinc mining in the north.

ith all that fish (and shellfish) in Cardigan Bay, and Cambrian Mountain lamb and beef from our hills and vales, we’re ahead of the game. Because it’s fresh and with just a handful of food miles on the clock, it tastes like it should. No wonder we came out tops in a ‘Local Food Heroes’ list of areas that make the best use of traditional ingredients.
Local knowledge
Chefs love working here, in seafront cafés and town bistros, fine dining restaurants and village inns, satisfying traditional and contemporary tastes. Meet celebrity chefs at Aberaeron’s Cardigan Bay Seafood Festival. Of course, every Cardi meal should end with some Cardi cheese, created by artisans down on the farm.
• Tŷ Nant, the bottled water of choice in top restaurants worldwide, comes from local springs. As does Llanllyr, another prized brand. And don’t forget our locally brewed beers.

onventional theme parks aren’t our thing. But there’s plenty here to keep everyone entertained, adults and children, day and night. Heritage and history come alive at ruined castles, abbeys and National Trust properties, while it’s back to the days of steam on narrow-gauge railways. From woodlands to wetlands and dolphins to dormice Wildlife and nature at its best inoculars are almost compulsory. You’ll need them for close-up views of bottlenose dolphins and red kites, waders and seals, otters and ospreys, basking sharks and Manx shearwaters. Our Noah’s Art of animal life flourishes in nature, marine and bird reserves, along our Heritage Coast, amongst ancient oak woodlands and in the wild - by which we mean the untamed ‘Wild Wales’ of the Cambrian Mountains. Nurture as well as nature plays a part. Cultivated gardens open to visitors, managed farmland and hedgerows, red-hued moorlands and bluebell woods change with the seasons. Hafod near Devil’s Bridge is a true hidden gem. It’s an estate of ‘wild nature’, created in the ‘Picturesque’ style in the late 18th century.

J
ust to put things into perspective: our largest town is Aberystwyth, population 15,000. For us that’s a big number, swollen by students who bring a cosmopolitan buzz to the Victorian town. Most places are much smaller. They’re on a refreshingly human scale, with high streets and the kind of shops - family-run stores, speciality outlets, butchers and bakers - that are becoming increasingly rare in Britain’s homogenised modern precincts. Even if we say so ourselves, we have some little gems - Georgian Aberaeron, historic Cardigan, salty New Quay, traditional Tregaron to name but four. It’s the same with our villages. They’ll usually have a village pub (or two), post office and shop, with proper tractors (not the Chelsea kind) parked outside.

All the accommodation featured in this publication has been assessed by Visit Wales or the AA so you can make your choice in confidence, knowing that each place to stay has been given a rating according to the quality and facilities on offer. The Star Quality Grading Schemes apply to all types of accommodation: serviced – hotels, guest houses, bed and breakfast, farm accommodation, hostel/hostel type accommodation, self-catering cottages and apartments and caravan holiday home and touring/camping parks.
Mae pob uned llety a hysbysebir wedi derbyn archwiliad gan Croeso Cymru neu’r AA gan sicrhau y gallwch wneud eich dewis a bod yn sicr bod y llety wedi derbyn gradd yn unol ag answadd y llety a’r gwasanaeth a ddarperir. Mae’r System Graddio Seren yn berthnasol i bob math o lety: llety â gwasanaeth, gwestai, gwely a brecwast, llety fferm, hosteli, llety hunan-ddarpar a meysydd carafan a gwersylla.

Accommodation operators are graded between one and five stars (with five stars being the highest) based on the overall quality of the experience and the facilities available. Properties described as Listed have chosen not to be star rated They have been checked out and provide an acceptable level of services and facilities appropriate to their type of business. Many lower star rated establishments may still offer high quality but do meet all of the facility and service expectations for the higher star ratings. Occasionally, it has not been possible to visit the accommodation prior to publication - these properties are marked as Awaiting Grading.

Mae llety yn medru derbyn rhwng un a phum seren (pum seren yw’r uchaf) yn seiliedig ar answadd y profiad a’r cyfleusterau a ddarperir. Mae llety a ddisgrifir fel Listed wedi dewis peidio â chael eu graddio. Maent wedi rhoi sicrwydd eu bod yn darparu lefel derbyniol o ran safon a gwasanaeth yn unol â’r math o lety. Mae amryw o lefydd sydd â nifer isel o sêr yn medru cynnig safon uchel er nad ydynt yn cynnig y cyfleusterau a’r gwasanaeth a geir mewn llety â mwy o sêr. O bryd i’w gilydd, nid yw’n bosib ymwled â llety cyn dyddiad cyhoeddi’r llyfryn. Os felly, dynodir y llety yn Awaiting Grading.
Visit Wales Gold Awards are given for exceptional standards of hospitality, comfort and food in serviced accommodation.
Dyfernir Gwobr Aur Croeso Cymru i lety â gwasanaeth go arbennig am gyrraedd safon eithriadol o ran lletygarwch, cysur a bwyd.

Croeso i Gerddwyr a Beicwyr: Dylai cerddwyr a beicwyr edrych am yr arwyddion hyn. Fe’u harddangosir gan llety sy’n darparu cyfleusterau i gerddwyr a beicwyr e.e. cyfleusterau sychu dillad gwlyb, lle i storio offer ac ati.
Accommodating visitors with disabilities: All Visit Wales graded properties have an Access Statement. This statement tells visitors in a clear, accurate and honest way how the property can meet their particular needs.
Llety i Ymwelwyr ag Anableddau: Mae Datganiad Mynediad i gael gan bod llety sydd wedi ei raddio gan Croeso Cymru. Mae’r datganiad yn rhoi gwybodaeth glir a chywir am y modd y gall y llety ateb gofynion y gwesteion gydag anableddau.
