THROUGH THE FERRY WINDOW, DARKLY...

It’s the best commute route I’ve ever had, and I suspect it’s the best I will ever have. Especially the evening journey home. Gently floating through the majestic Victoria Harbour, from Central to Discovery Bay. From the futuristic, spectacularly lit city to a faux Italian village. Sometimes with a beer in hand - we have three options right at the ferry station for a quick pint. But even without the drinks, it can be an intoxicating experience. I tend to take a seat on the left side, looking for a a reasonably clean window view. Then I pull out my phone camera, ready for the opportunity. Passing by the IFC building, then the Macau Ferry Terminal, the Shun Tak building, the docks, gently easing out from the bustling city. Sometimes I switch it up and give a chance for the Kowloon side on the right. Perhaps I catch the ICC building in some interesting light, or I get one of those other ferries rushing by.

Sometimes, when the raindrops sit just right on the window, the lights reflect just the right way, and the tiny camera focuses just right, I get something that looks like a painting. Sometimes a dreary gray sky makes the city look even more cyberpunk. The sunsets, the dramatic skies, the quiet peace of the empty and vast sea. The big cargo ships magically appear and pass by, providing a majestic canvas for the setting Sun’s golden light. No need to look at your phone on the journey. No need to open the laptop, or plug in the earphones. Try to get a window seat - I’m pretty sure it’s the best commute you’ll ever have!
