“I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” (Psalm 119.11)

BY ALAN SHEROUSE

I

n the midst of a season of light in the life of our church, the second Sunday of Epiphany was an especially bright day. On Sunday, January 12 our congregation voted to affirm Kim Priddy as the newest member of our pastoral staff, serving as Assistant Pastor of Missions. Additionally, we approved an increased role for Dr. Steve Sumerel, our Associate Pastor of Adult Learning, to encourage continued integration of our mission efforts into our Education ministry. Suzii Paynter, the Executive Coordinator of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, has suggested that in an increasingly ecumenical church culture, the mission efforts of churches like ours will need to rely heavily on “flexibility in our relationships” and an increasing sense of “cooperation and collaboration” in our efforts (“Suzii Paynter on CBF’s Future,” www.ethicsdaily.com ). With Kim joining our staff, Steve’s additional missions-focused hours, and the continued work of our lay leaders, we are superbly staffed for just this type of work. A longtime resident of Greensboro, Kim comes to our church with a range of community relationships, including ties to Greensboro Urban Ministry, StepUp Ministries, and a host of local churches. She also articulates a sense of call to a pastoral ministry focused on missions. With her background and call, Kim will help us in further coordinating our existing efforts and thinking prayerfully and strategically about emerging opportunities. Kim will begin work with us in mid-February, with increased hours after her graduation

from Wake Forest University Divinity School in May. We look forward to the addition of her particular gifts to our staff team. But beyond the excitement produced by new staff and opportunities, it’s important to note the structural statement our church has made. As we organizational leaders love to point out, personnel and financial decisions are “value statements.” More than merely administrative, such decisions are ethical and even theological, telling us about what we value and what we believe. In forming the position of Assistant Pastor of Missions, First Baptist has made a statement that Missions and Community Ministry are core to the identity and ministry of our church, along with our ministries of Pastoral Care, Music & Worship, and Education for all ages. This structural statement is no surprise, given the commitment to missions that has long been central to the life of our church. Even as I write this article on a Thursday evening, 3 of our members are serving on a mission trip in Chile, others prepare for weekend service projects, small groups coordinate cooperative ministry efforts, First Baptist volunteers staff the WE! Shelter on a cold night, Sunday School classes plan corporate mission projects to carry out on Sunday, and all of us seek to embody the love of Christ through our day to day lives. I celebrate our decisions on January 12, which help to ensure that the commitments to missions and ministry that have characterized our life together at First Baptist will only grow in the days ahead.

How Can a Bowl of Soup Save Someone’s Life? BY ROSEMARY KELLAM

S

tories of folks in crisis this year have been varied but familiar. However, it may not always resonate with us just how close a family in our community is to losing everything. The following example is why our Christian Assistance Fund is so important. As you read this story, try to imagine this is happening to you or someone close to you. “I have a client here trying to get rental assistance. Her home has been padlocked. Her crisis is that she lost her job at the beginning of November due to medical reasons. She has a son who has a mental disability living with her. He just started receiving SSI last month. However, they are still behind on rent from the previous months from when she was out of work. She also had her last SSI benefits card stolen and had to have it replaced. Unfortunately, she was unable to recover the money that was on the card. Her landlord says she needs $1000.00 to get the padlock removed. She has $400.00 of it now. She states that Salvation Army will help with $300.00. Can you each help with $150.00? Thank you for considering.” Unfortunately, there is so much more to the story. The reality is this is not only about their rent. They still need food, medicine, utilities, and transportation. This is why the Christian Assistance Fund was created. Please join us as we support this vital ministry at our annual Souper Bowl Lunch. You may not always know who you are helping but know you are providing much-needed financial assistance to those in need in our community.

March Prayer Emphasis Through our Prayer study, everyone has a very accessible avenue to join fellow travelers discovering the importance of prayer. Most participants will be able to discuss Foster’s book through their Sunday School classes. However, those who are unable to be a part of a Sunday School discussion have several options available to them. The following opportunities are open to anyone wishing to be involved in a discussion group on the Foster book. Facilitated discussion groups will be provided throughout March on Sunday evenings at 6 pm in room 102, and on Wednesday evenings during Adult Access time (6:15 pm) in room 108-C. We also encourage families with children to bring this prayer emphasis into your home. Children will be learning about prayer in small groups on Wednesday nights. In addition, FBC’s website will provide a link to a blog for participants to be able to post comments on the book. We also encourage families to focus on prayer through March. Family discussion guides will be available to everyone wishing to bring the prayer emphasis into their home. A major benefit of “One Church-One Book” emphasis is to provide an opportunity for a church-wide conversation on a focal topic. By following the same five-week schedule, we will come as close as possible to providing for this broad conversation. Therefore, the following schedule for reading the book is recommended. The week of– March 2: Chapters 1 - 5 March 9: Chapters 6 - 9 March 16: Chapters 10 - 13 March 23: Chapters 14 - 17 March 30: Chapters 18 - 21

God’s Blessings at the YWCA WE! Shelter BY CATHERINE SCOTT-LITTLE

S

tarting with the first really cold snap at the beginning of January, the YWCA WE! Shelter has been full to capacity, and God’s blessings have been upon the people and the place. Twenty women from the Greensboro community are finding shelter, food and rest at the YWCA WE! Shelter. FBC volunteers have provided food, breakfast/lunch bags, company and compassion to the women and have, in turn, experienced blessings as well. Shelley Garrett, the coordinator for FBC Greeters, says that her experience at the shelter has given her a better understanding of the many factors that can lead someone to be homeless, and has helped her see the importance of being a kind and friendly face for the women in the midst of their struggles. Experiences like this show how FBC members are both a blessing and being blessed through this ministry. One immediate and on-going need at the Shelter is something you may have in your pocket right now – quarters. The Shelter does not have a washer or dryer, so the women have to wash clothes at a laundromat. Each week they ride the Shelter van to the laundromat and we supply quarters for each person to do two loads of laundry. If you can help by donating quarters (it’s great if they are in rolls!), please see Geneva Metzger, Catherine Scott-Little or Jan Hill, who will pass them along to the Shelter staff. Feel free to visit the FBC website at www.fbcgso.org/we_shelter or contact Geneva Metzger (288-1877 / mizzometzger@yahoo.com ) or Catherine Scott-Little (856-0623 / CatherineScottLittle@gmail.com ) to learn more about the Shelter and the available volunteer opportunities.
