T

he primary symbol of Christianity is the cross, but our secondary symbol might just be the table. Jesus’ ministry moved from table to table. He was defined by those he ate with (“Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?” the Pharisees ask in Mark 2:16). He gathered at tables at festival times and in significant moments, including most notably his last night with his followers and friends. When he came back for them, the resurrected Christ revealed himself to them at tables and in meals. New Testament scholar, John Dominic Crossan has said that a core symbol of Jesus’ life was his open “table fellowship” that was the embodiment of his message of egalitarianism and equality (Jesus: A Revolutionary Biography). And at some point in all of this sharing at table, we sensed Jesus wanted to dine with us, evidenced in the tables of our sanctuary where we gather at Christ’s invitation. The life of our church moves from table to table, too, most clearly and symbolically as we celebrate communion. This became powerfully clear to me during the span of a recent week, as I shared communion in three separate settings within the life of our church. First, we shared at the table of communion in our sanctuary — a powerful moment each month, as we gather with one another to remember and experience anew the invitation of Christ. At this particular meal, we remembered that at the table Jesus looked at his followers and called them “friends.” On the last night of his life, as the long road came to its end and the finality of it all settled on him, Jesus didn’t need disciples, or “brothers and sisters,” or followers. He needed friends. We confess that he needs this still, so as we shared communion, we recalled how Jesus calls us friends. It’s a message I remembered vividly at another table of our church, as in that same week Dr. Sumerel and I, at the invitation and coordination of Deacon Joan Ratliff, joined the First Baptist members and friends at Friends Home West for a service of communion in the campus chapel. In this service, we recalled that while our sanctuary table is open to all who profess to follow Christ, it is not accessible to all, as some in our membership are not able to attend the church they love. So especially for these we know as our “homebound” members, we shared at the table that Christ sets amongst us wherever two or more gather. On that day over 20 gathered, and we listened as scripture was read. Becky Livengood. with her beautiful soprano voice, led us to sing some hymns. We passed bread and cup. We remembered. And then we recalled the power of this meal in our own lives, as through story and sharing we told of the table that connects us one to another and with Christ who calls us together there. The theme was just as clear to me at one other communion table of First Baptist that week — this one downstairs in our Fireside Room, where every Sunday morning the members of our Happy Hearts Class gather. This community of adults with disabilities, and their wonderful leaders, are a gift to First Baptist. Many of them are known to you, as they attend worship on Sundays in their usual second pew center. However, many of our Happy Hearts attend Sunday School only. Recently, this fact led our outgoing Pastoral Resident, Rev. Courtney Stamey, to initiate a monthly communion service during the Sunday School hour. On this, her final Sunday with Happy Hearts, Courtney invited me to participate in leadership with her. It was a beautiful gathering, where everyone found what they needed, and some declined what they didn’t need (“No thanks, I’m on a diet!”). As Courtney and I moved amidst the rows, offering the bread and cup, I said to one of our members, “This is the body of Christ for you.” Almost habitually, she replied, “Thank you. And the body of Christ for you, too.” Even though she offered me no bread, her words were true. At that table, I experienced anew the body of the one who welcomes us all. In her book Making Room: Recovering Hospitality as a Christian Tradition, theologian Christine Pohl has observed, “A shared meal is the activity most closely tied to the reality of God’s kingdom,” and these tables of First Baptist Greensboro are one of the places in which this reality is known. We remember. We pass. We celebrate. We find what we need, as so many have before us. It’s no wonder that when Jesus returns after his resurrection, the first people to see him in the gospel of Luke don’t even recognize him until they got to a table. It’s there that Scripture says “he became known to them in the breaking of the bread,” and it’s so often there that he becomes know to us, too. June 2018 | 3

Indigo Stephens, Drew Cornett, Alex Porter, Berkley Willis, Deborah Kayombo, and Jake McCord have made their professions of faith. The conversations that have taken place with these children have been inquisitive, heartfelt, and authentic. God’s Big Love! God’s love is so big that it is big enough for the entire world. Just like the wind is everywhere, so is God’s love. During one of the stations at the Family Lenten Workshop in March, children and families took turns blowing a pinwheel to remind them of God’s big love. As they took turns doing this, they talked about people and places around the world that need more of God’s love. Following the workshop, we decided to “pin” the yards of families who attended to remind them, and others, to spread God’s big love. After several days, families chose another family to “pin.” They shared pictures on social media of the pinwheels in their yards, including #godsbiglove #fbcgso. This is the poem that was included: The Family Lenten Workshop, was, oh, so very fun, We wanted to keep it going, with these pinwheels in the sun.

God’s love is all around us, like the wind that blows pinwheels, We are called to share that same big love, it can be a real big deal. When you see them spinning in your yard, remember God’s love to share, With others who are near and far, who need to know we care.

So pass along this joyful surprise, and decorate a yard, As we spread the love of God around, it’s really not that hard!

A Greensboro Tornado Assistance Update…

F

irst Baptist Greensboro Family, thank you for your continued care and concern for those impacted by the April 15th tornado in our community. The response has been tremendous and there are still changing needs to meet in the days and months ahead. We have been able to and will continue to partner with Habitat for Humanity, BackPack Beginnings, Bessemer Elementary, the Interactive Resource Center, New Light Missionary Baptist, and Providence Baptist in responding to those in crisis. While FEMA assistance will be helpful to the community, it also pauses our volunteer response until FEMA can assess, record and respond to damages as well. We will be sure to keep our church family updated on ways to help as we learn of them. Please see below for new details and updated ways you can help be the hands and feet of Christ to those in need.

GIVE – www.fbcgso.org/give – If you’re compelled to give, at this time we would especially encourage financial donations that can support longer-term recovery efforts for those displaced from their homes and who will have major repairs in the weeks and months ahead. Even small financial gifts will help alleviate heavy burdens on those who lost housing. Many trustworthy organizations are receiving donations, but any financial contributions to First Baptist marked “Tornado Response” will be 100% stewarded to long term efforts in which we’ll participate with our partner churches and organizations in the affected areas. MATERIALS– New Light Missionary Baptist Church and BackPack Beginnings are still collecting and distributing items to those in need. If you’re interested in a material rather than financial donation, you may bring requested items to the FBC Atrium and we will deliver. Items still requested: • Cleaning supplies: Dishwashing soap, Clorox wipes, etc) • Dog Food (cat food has been given in larger quantities) • Diapers, all sizes, infant and adult • Hygiene items: toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, soap and washcloths • Heavy duty trash bags 10 | Connections

All classes will have the opportunity to meet, have prayer, count noses and all the other tasks that define individual classes before joining Oasis at 9:30 am. Registration Open for FRONT Although FRONT was originally developed for the purpose of preparing potential Sunday School teachers to enter the classroom, it has truly outgrown its initial purpose. The three month curriculum which will begin in September, is designed to offer each participant a foundation in four major areas of study; Old Testament, New Testament, Church History, and Christian Theology. This course will certainly prepare a student for a teaching role in our Sunday School program, but it has also encouraged the spiritual formation of many of our members who simply wanted to “dig a little deeper.” The faculty for FRONT this fall will include, Rev. Alan Sherouse, Dr. Jason Myers, Dr. Scott Culclasure, and Dr. Sumerel. For information about FRONT, contact Steve Sumerel at steves@fbcgso.org | x233.

Meet First Baptist’s Summer Staff… Megan Barlow | Children’s Ministry Intern

We are excited to have Megan Barlow as a summer intern with the Children’s Ministry! Megan grew up at First Baptist, and is a rising sophomore at Appalachian State University where she is double majoring in Elementary Education and Spanish Education. She would love to one day work in a Spanish immersion school in the US or possibly in another country. She is looking forward to lots of different experiences this summer at FBC. She says, “This is the perfect job because it combines my love of missions and my love of children.”

Baker Lawrimore | Pastoral Ministry

After serving with us another year as a Music Ministry Intern, we’re excited to have Baker with us through the summer serving across the scope of our ministries. Baker graduated from UNC-G this year, and next year will begin a Ministry Fellowship at First Baptist (see the description on this page). It’s an exciting time in Baker’s life, as he and Addison were married on May 19, and we’re equally excited to be a church family for Addison and Baker in these early days of marriage.

Rev. Chris Cherry Starts July 1 We look forward to welcoming Rev. Chris Cherry, who will formally begin his work with us July 1. Please continue to pray for Chris and Tory as over the next month they move to a new city and a new house, while also welcoming a new baby... Margaux Britt Cherry was born May 23 at 6:24 pm, 8 pounds & 12 ounces and 20 inches long! 12 | Connections

Sarah Parker | Pastoral Ministry Sarah Parker has served throughout the 2017-2018 school year as our Interim Minister to Youth and Families, and we have been blessed by her gifts in ministry to our youth and broader congregation. We’re grateful that Sarah will continue with us this summer in a role that will be more general, as Chris Cherry begins his work as Associate Pastor of Youth & Families. Sarah will complete her MDiv at Wake Forest University Divinity School next semester, graduating in December.

Baker Lawrimore to Serve as Ministry Fellow Beginning formally in the Fall, Baker Lawrimore will serve with First Baptist as a Ministry Fellow through the 2018-2019 academic year. This Fellowship will be a subset of the Pastoral Residency program, providing an opportunity between undergraduate and seminary education for someone who is discerning a call to ministry. Baker will have housing in the Resident House on Adams Street, and he will serve our congregation parttime, while also pursuing his passion for teaching. His work with First Baptist will be focused in music ministry, but he will also continue to gain experience broadly in the work of pastoral ministry. This arrangement allows First Baptist to spend the next year making plans for the future of our Pastoral Residency, while also especially benefiting from Baker’s talents next January and February, as he will lead in our music ministry while Doug and Terri are on sabbatical.

Giving at FBC Greensboro Why We Give: Giving financially is a chance for us to honor God with the resources and provisions that God has provided for us. When we practice generous giving, we strengthen our relationship with Christ. As we learn to grow in our trust and faith in Christ, it is important to trust in Christ’s provision. As people of faith, we give faithfully and generously out of grateful hearts, because God has given to us faithfully and generously. How to Give: We pass an offering plate during the worship service. Most members give their offerings to the church by putting a check in an envelope and placing the envelope in the offering plate as it is passed on Sunday mornings. Others who cannot attend on particular Sundays mail their checks to the church. Others use their online banking and set up one time or automatic payments that are sent to the church through their bank. Still others set up their online giving through the church website. We also have a mobile giving option through Tithe.ly for use on both Apple and Android devices. If you have any questions, contact Scott North at the church office – scott@fbcgso.org | x226.
