DEAR FRIENDS, If summer sends us scattered in different directions, fall is a season of return and reconnection. We hope this new Fall Ministry Guide will be a resource for you in making the most of the opportunities for worship, faith formation, service, and community at First Baptist Greensboro. It’s a great time to try a new Sunday School class or Midweek study (found on page 8), consider serving in our wider community (pages 10-11), take advantage of opportunities to find where you belong (page 9), or find a meaningful place of leadership in the life of our church. I - together with all of our pastors want you to have the information and resources you need to more fully love God and love your neighbor through the ministry of our church. We hope this Fall Ministry guide helps, and if we can be a further resource in any way, please let us know.

TOGETHER IN LOVE,

Sing an

Old Song to the

Lord

SING A NEW OLD SONG TO THE LORD!

Sing a new song to the Lord. – Psalm 96.1 This Psalm verse has often been used to justify imposing new and unfamiliar songs to the reluctant worshiper in the pew, but this year First Baptist will take a new approach to this biblical mandate.

Sing an OLD song ANEW to the Lord. We will sing the old songs of our faith with renewed vigor and with new eyes and ears to see and hear a new and deeper meaning found in this venerable collection. All of our choirs will sing beautiful arrangements of these songs for worship. Our worship guides will contain the stories and theological meaning within the lyrics. Wednesdays at 4:45 pm in the Chapel | Beginning in October

JUBILATE DEO | SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 18 Dan Forrest’s Jubilate Deo! will be presented by our combined choirs and chamber orchestra on Commitment Sunday, November 18 in the morning worship service. Jubilate Deo is a new setting of Psalm 100 which employs seven languages and musical characteristics from around the world, including Latin, Hebrew and Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, Zulu, and English. It is a truly stunning global celebration of joy as all the earth sings together “omnis terra, jubilate!”

AT FIRST BAPTIST, we are committed to following Jesus’ example by welcoming children into our church family. During a child’s infancy, we covenant with parents to be partners with them in nurturing their child and in helping them grow to know and love Jesus as friend, Savior and Lord. Our varied programs for children are directed toward that end.

SUNDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY (9:15-10:15

am) ADULT BIBLE STUDY is ever changing and we have both traditional and more contemporary classes to choose from, as well as special one-time and seasonal studies. Bible study at FBC is every Sunday morning at 9:15 am until 10:15 am. There are small group Bible studies for all ages of adults that are based on the standard age division, as well as classes that are intergenerational, just for women, just for men, for the dramatic, and those based on a specific topic. We invite you to join us to study God’s word.

MIDWEEK @FBC MIDWEEK @FBC is our Wednesday night programming including dinner and classes. Everyone is invited to join us for dinner from 5:30 - 6:15 pm, and classes will begin at 6:20 pm. We have new classes being offered this fall, and we hope you’ll find your place in one. Be on the lookout for other offerings midway through the fall.

JOB: FINDING BEAUTY FROM THE ASH HEAP Duration: September 12 - November 28, 2018 Presenter: Steve Sumerel Location: Chapel Job may be one of the most troubling yet beautiful books of the Bible: troubling because Job did not deserve the disasters that befell him, beautiful because of the view of God that could only be revealed from the ashheap. In this study, we will seek to understand the place of Job in Old Testament thought and theology; and we will get a glimpse of God through the eyes of Job, his so-called comforters, and even Job’s family. Job is worth the time to read and study slowly… for the story, the poetry, the theology… and for the opportunities it brings to form a deeper relationship with God. We shall seek to encounter Job on all these levels in this three-month series.

STRONG & COURAGEOUS Duration: September 12 - November 28, 2018 Presenter: Courtney Willis Location: 108-C

In this series, we will take a look at Biblical characters who showed strength and courage in both expected and unexpected ways. Through this examination of scripture, we will discuss ways we can be strong and courageous in our own lives. What might it look like if we are strong and courageous in our families? In our careers? In our communities? In the world? Together, we will discover how strength and courage are rooted in having faith and trust in the God who is leading us.

FAITH AND THE EMPTY NEST Duration: Presenter: Location:

September 19 – October 10, 2018 Wanda Kidd, head of Campus Ministry for Cooperative Fellowship of NC TBA

This study will give parents and loved ones of college-aged and young adult children the opportunity to gather and share about how faith and life are impacted as children leave the home. Wanda Kidd, head of Campus Ministry for Cooperative Fellowship of NC and other campus ministers will guide this important conversation each week.

SEEKING PEACE | A ONE-DAY CONTEMPLATIVE RETREAT Does the busyness of day to day life have you searching for a moment of stillness and calm? Have you ever wanted to experience your faith through more contemplative practices? Could you use one day to simply breathe and listen for God’s still small voice speaking to your spirit? This one-day retreat is an opportunity to gather for prayer and Scripture as we seek out God’s peace in our hearts and in our lives. 8
