2 Fall 2019

WELCOME TO FBC MIDLOTHIAN! A family moved into a neighborhood this year and they asked about how they could make an impact and serve. So our conversation took a turn. “Would you be willing to see your home as a center for serving your neighborhood? Would you just focus on living and loving like Jesus with your neighbors?” It sparked their creativity and they began a journey of doing just that. They have had great conversations with their neighbors and served them this year. I received a call from the wife, describing how satisfying that journey has been for them. So I urge YOU to ask this question as you jump into this new season:

How will I live and love like Jesus more than ever before? That's the essence of being a follower of Jesus, and that’s the essence of our pursuit as a church family. I invite you to join us in that journey this Fall. Jesus promised us a big life. We want to help you pursue and discover it! This magazine is designed to celebrate the people, the opportunities, and the callings of the church family as we pursue the Jesus Life together—learning to live and love like Him. You’ll meet some of the families whose stories are being reshaped by Jesus. You’ll see some resourceful options for stretching your heart and building new relationships. And your story will be part of shaping our story.

Join us in the pursuit of that big life—living and loving like Jesus!

WHAT'S THE GOSPEL? The Whole Picture

GOD'S DESIGN

BROKENNESS

THE GOSPEL

REPENT & BELIEVE

God has a design for everything: for work, money, sex, marriage, relationships, family, for how we face trouble and how we celebrate joy. He has a design for everything and designed it in such a way that we could experience a great life.

But something about us wants to go about life in our own way. From the very beginning of humanity, we want to be the boss. When we depart from God’s design, the Bible has a word for that: sin.

When we get to a point where we know something needs to change, the Bible has a word for that solution to our brokenness.

An amazing thing happens when we turn from our sins and turn to Jesus. God does a miracle in our hearts and gives us a new power, a new motivation, and the ability that allows us to recover and pursue God’s design for life.

It’s called the Gospel. That word “Gospel” means “good news.” The Good News is that God loves all of us! He loves us so much that when He sees us in our brokenness, he doesn’t just leave us there.

90-DAY CHALLENGE SUMMARY In January, I challenged us to read through the New Testament in a 90-day schedule. We talk about the Bible, use verses from it, and have a general idea of what Jesus said and did, but many have never read it. So, I asked us to spend 10 minutes a day—just 10 minutes—to actually read it. Every week, I heard peoples' stories. I hope you had an experience too. What we are reading is not just another book. These are the experiences and observations of the eyewitnesses of Jesus. The book didn’t just drop from heaven. Peter wrote from prison. Paul was chased out of a town and recorded his experience. Matthew’s life had been

changed by a Jesus who called him to leave his tax stand behind and follow. We can’t read these accounts without our hearts being confronted and encouraged. It affects how you think, work, and play. The more you read, the more Jesus calls out to you to live and love like Him. I think that’s the essence of following Jesus—you pay attention to what He does and says and you find that you’re making choices more like He does. And the more of us who allow Jesus to affect us, the more people see HIM in us. That’s the nature of being His follower!

90-DAY CHALLENGE

TESTIMONIES “ I’ve been attending church since I was a young man, but I had never read the New Testament. I’m embarrassed to say it, but this has been a great experience. I had no idea of some of the things Jesus said. ”

“ I read something last week that really troubled me. Can we get together to talk about it? If this is true, I have some big changes I need to consider. ”

“ Just this morning I was reflecting on this journey. The Word is alive, and indeed I am finding myself recalling the words of Jesus. I’ve always said my job is my mission field, but then I find myself getting caught up in pettiness. Am I going to be used for the Kingdom? Or am I going to be like the Pharisees, or even some of the Jews that were legalistic and worry about being treated fairly? Thank you for the challenge! ”

Jeremy, Bo, Jordyn, Ruby Kate, Amanda Mehringer

REDEEMED Jeremy & Amanda Mehringer met in college at East Texas Baptist University. After dating they eventually married and planned, like most newlyweds, to have children. They also hoped that after their future biological children grew up a bit, to pursue adoption of additional children. God had a different plan in mind. Jeremy, a fireman, and Amanda, a teacher, found that starting their family didn’t come as easy for them as it seemed to for others. “After that first year of trying we started the medications,” Amanda recalled. “And after that, came a new doctor and more interventions. We did countless IUI (Intrauterine Insemination transfers). I don’t even know exactly how many. But each transfer was unsuccessful and eventually our new doctor referred us to a fertility specialist.” The fertility specialist helped the Mehringers through the IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) process. After the first transfer, they did achieve the pregnancy for which they had prayed for, but lost the baby in a little over nine and a half weeks.

An Interview with Jeremy & Amanda Mehringer

“That was really hard because it was as far as we had ever gotten and we had already told friends and family,” Amanda said. After the miscarriage they experienced an additonal chemical pregnancy and another unsuccessful transfer. When reflecting on that season Jeremy recalls “A big source of support came from our Connect Group, friends, our Sunday Group, and of course, our family. It was tough to go through. It’s such an intimate part of your life to share with others.” With that support and their burning desire for children, Jeremy and Amanda then made the choice to pursue adoption. “We had seriously talked about how, one day, we were going to adopt so it was always on our hearts. We just didn’t know it would be in this order,” Amanda smiled and said.

Private adoption seemed financially out of reach for this couple, but Jeremy had a childhood friend who was going through the process of fostering children through an organization called Arrow Child & Family Ministries. Jeremy and Amanda contacted the organization and set in motion the fostering to adopt process. Among the numerous e-mails they were to receive, the one about 19-month-old Jordyn and her sister, 5-month-old Ruby Kate, stopped them in their tracks.

“As soon as we saw the girls it was game over. We didn’t even have to have a discussion, this was it! We submitted our profile and the process began”, Jeremy said. “We traveled to Houston to keep them overnight. We packed any and everything we could think of and still ended up stopping at Target in Houston for more. We had never had infants or toddlers in our house, so we just wanted to make sure we were prepared! We walked into the office and walked out with two kids. They told us ‘Good luck, see you tomorrow.’ It was a whirlwind of a weekend,” Amanda laughed. In May of 2016, the Mehringers officially became foster parents. In February of 2017, they officially became “Mommy and Daddy.” Jeremy remembers a conversation with a buddy at the fire station in the Fall of 2016 while waiting for the adoption to become official. “Somehow we got

to talking about the whole thing and my buddy said, ‘How crazy would it be if another baby came along?’ Minutes later, I got a phone call updating us on the progress of the girls’ adoption. Then I heard, ‘By the way, there’s another baby, a sibling to the girls. Do y’all want the baby, too?’ I said, ‘absolutely!’ and didn’t even talk to Amanda until later,” Jeremy laughed. Bo would officially become their son in July of 2018, but the Mehringers know he had been part of God’s plan from the start. In the span of two years, this couple went from no children, and little hope, to being parents of three! Jeremy and Amanda testify how fostering and adoption have changed their lives for the better. When asked what advice they would give to anyone considering fostering or adopting children, they replied, “We, as a society, see foster care and adoption as a scary unknown and you don’t hear much positive. But to see it and experience it is to really get a grasp on what grace is all about.” “We didn’t deserve this blessing at all, but God has shown mercy and love and grace toward us in a way I never understood before our kids came into our home,” says Jeremy. Amanda adds, “I don’t think there is any way to prepare fully, but the advice I could offer is that—it’s not a life that many will understand. It’s not like anything else anyone tries to compare it to. It’s hard, it’s sometimes ugly, it’s amazingly full, and absolutely beautiful!”

Have you opened your home to children in foster care? If so, we want to know!

SOWING SEEDS In our quest for a healthy family, we can turn in lots of different directions. Social media, WebMD, blogs and articles offer advice at every turn as they constantly compete for our attention. We have moved from the “Information Generation” to the “Information Overload Generation”! Still we ask: • How can we better engage our children in each phase of their lives? • How can we steer them in the right direction? • For that matter, what IS the right direction? Our church staff wants to partner with you to find the answers to these questions. Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Write them on the door frames of your houses on your gates.

Helping Your Children Find Their Way

than “sending them”. If we want our children to head in God’s direction, we should be heading there ourselves. And we should do so consistently.

A Daily Direction Did you know that there are only about 936 weeks from the day a child is born until the day he or she graduates high school? We have a very small window to get our job done! God wants his people to make Him a priority. To prioritize God means our daily lives reflect His instruction and His truth. Our kids need to be instructed how to live like God desires in everyday ways - EVERY DAY. As parents, we intentionally seize those teachable moments, reminding ourselves that time is fleeting!

– Deuteronomy 11:18-20 God wants us to saturate our homes and surround our children in His word. That will help send them in the right direction.

A Divine Direction As a parent, you are called to “Train up a child in the way he should go.” (Proverbs 22:6) That “way” or direction is towards the Heavenly Father. Being your child’s primary faith trainer can be a bit daunting! How do we fulfill that calling? Certainly, taking children to Sunday School and church events can help, but if we want them to truly move in the direction of the Divine Parent, we must remember “leading them” is much more effective

A Development-Focused Direction Research tells us that children learn differently in different stages of development. Knowing how a child thinks and processes information helps us to get the message across in a clear way. And getting the message across clearly is vital to a child’s understanding and retention. In his book Don’t Miss It, author Reggie Joiner defines particular time frames in the lives of children when parents can “leverage distinctive opportunities to influence their future.” Certainly, explaining the truths of God in ways a child “gets” provides the best results.

fbcmidlo.com 11

We suggest these two steps:

A Dedicated Direction As a parent, your calling is to lead your child toward God. As a church staff, our calling is to help you fulfill your calling! We want to do all we can to equip and champion you to guide your child’s spiritual growth. We want to help you help your child as he or she transitions through various phases. We want to partner with you as you engage your child in conversations about following Jesus and what it means to live and love like He does. As you dedicate yourself to lead your child to dedicate his or her life to Christ, we want you to know we are steadfast in walking beside you.

1. Contact your child’s ministry leader(s) identified below. Connect with them so they can help you connect with others who are investing in your child each one of those 936 weeks. They can give you resources, while you can give them greater insight into your child! 2. October 2, 2019 we will be hosting a event called Family Night. We will be unpacking a bit of Reggie Joiner’s findings in a way that will be helpful to you. No matter the age of your child, our Family Night will be a great opportunity to invest in your child and their future! Every phase is crucial and what you do matters. Let’s celebrate together! Our children's time is time we can't afford to miss.

TWO STEPS FORWARD… Parenting is challenging and often exhausting! That’s truer today than it ever has been. We want to thank you for taking the job seriously. Allow us to be able to help you lead your child in the right direction.

Grab this great parenting resource at your local bookstore or online.

Leaving the country and sharing the Gospel with strangers can be challenging, but members of FBC Midlothian are taking on that challenge. For three years now a group of 20 members have traveled to Bramsche, Germany to do mission work with the Evangelisch-Freikirchliche Gemeinde (Evangelical Free Church Community Baptist). At the urging of Lance and Kim Spross, long time members of FBC Midlothian, the church partnered with Synergy Missions to help the congregation in Bramsche. The main goal of this mission endeavor was to reach the children of that town through a baseball camp. The love of the game draws kids to hear about the love of Jesus. The mission team share that love of Christ daily during team time Bible studies as well as through evening services and spending time in host homes. Maria Borgmann, a participant in the camp for the past 9 years, shares,

“I started my journey with God because of this baseball camp. I have to admit I have had, and still have, my ups and downs, but I am extremely thankful that I am continuing on this journey.” The baseball camp allows the 100+ kids from ages 8-22 to learn the basics of baseball through rotating skill stations, spending time learning about God’s love for them, and finishing each day with a game

of baseball. On the last day of camp, a tournament decides the champion team and medals are awarded. “It still amazes me how quickly strong, lasting relationships are built between Germans and Americans over a week of baseball and sharing Christ,” says Lance. The language barrier is crossed with the help of 20 local volunteers who give their time and skill to translate for the younger kids who attend camp. Maria admits the challenge of constantly switching between the two languages, but claims it makes the camp even more special to her to be able to have such a vital role. “I think for us Germans, being a translator is the greatest experience we can make during baseball camp,” Borgmann said. The evenings are a special time for campers and their families to come to the church and experience worship services. For some, it is their first exposure to the Gospel, as it is presented by members from FBC Midlothian or Olaf Petzel, the pastor of the host church. Mission Trip Team members know that worshiping with believers from a different culture allows for deeper connections to be made with the Holy Spirit. And being immersed in a community that is so far away, yet similar in many ways also creates a special bond. Strong relationships are formed between FBC members and their German host families.

Staying in a stranger’s house for a week can seem daunting at first, but by the end of the week, everyone becomes “family” as the experience creates beautiful friendships that can last a lifetime.

“The way they opened their hearts to us and connected with us so quickly is something that only Christ could have ordained,” Jillian Stevens said. Though coaching baseball takes up a substantial portion of the trip, the ultimate goal, of course, is to share the Gospel. Keeping that goal in focus takes mental and spiritual preparation, and that preparation pays off when the mission team members see the Lord work through them in incredible ways. “I know baseball and spiritual principles, but on my own, I am useless,” Will Oliver said. “I returned home thinking that there is so much more that is accomplished when I allow God to work through me more versus doing it in my own strength and abilities.” God calls us to “make disciples of all nations,” and this is not an exclusive to a few church members. It is a call to everyone who follows Jesus. Expanding our

14 Fall 2019

sphere of influence and spreading His word is possible for anyone. A mission trip to Bramsche is just one way followers of Christ can leave their comfort levels to spread good news. “One of the biggest takeaways from being in Bramsche and working with our partner church for 3 years is that God is writing His story in hearts all over the world and He allows us to be a part of that story,” Kevin Phillips, Discipleship Pastor of FBC, said. “The life-change in the students, the immediate connection with brothers and sisters in Christ, and the joy that overflows during the preparation and the trip itself are obvious ‘God moments’ that I will cherish.” If you would like information on upcoming mission endeavors, both abroad or closer to home, contact Kevin at kevin.phillips@fbcmidlo.com

MEET GRACEY DOMINGUE Q: Give us a little background information on where you grew up.

fully to one or the other. Then, my college small group leader, Kevin Phillips, told me that a summer intern position was opening up at the church in Louisiana and I should think about applying. So I did‌and I cried in my interview. Looking back on it now, I laugh because I was so emotional. But I truly believe that, in hindsight, I was overwhelmed by how the Lord was speaking to me in that moment. He had something new and big in store but I had no idea how to handle it.

A: I grew up in Lafayette, Louisiana. Very family-centered and where everything is a party! I am the oldest woman in the family with one older brother, two younger sisters, and a younger brother. I also have two nieces and two nephews (that I can't get enough of ), and another niece on the way!

Q: How were you called to get into ministry? A: It was definitely a calling that the Lord was wiring in me way before I had any idea what He was preparing me for! Dance was always a passion of mine, so I loved performing on stage, expressing emotion in a unique way, and teaching kids the art of discipline of the craft. I found Jesus Christ my junior year in high school after a terrible car accident I was involved in. I wasn't sure at first why I had survived but God met me in my questioning and reassured that I had purpose. From that point on I began seeking out what my calling was. I worked all sorts of different jobs in college: retail, baking, and teaching dance. I felt like I was short-changing all of the people I worked with though because I wasn't devoting myself

Get to Know Our Children's Pastor

I didn't get the job that summer, but I knew I needed to volunteer somewhere. And guess where I landed? Kids Ministry. During that year of volunteering, my heart grew for kids and for how God was wiring me to reach elementary kids for His Kingdom.

That summer, I reapplied for the summer internship and officially became part of the Summer Staff! Fast track to three years later and my title became "Kids Minister!" There were so many little affirmations throughout that journey that made me confident in where the Lord wanted me. If you see me around, I'd love to share them with you!

fbcmidlo.com 15

Q: What led you to FBC Midlothian? A: Ultimately, I thought I would live in Lafayette for a really long time. The only thing I thought could get me to leave was a husband‌again, the Lord had other plans.

When I heard about the job opening at FBC, I honestly didn't think I would be open to moving. I didn't even have a resume built for ministry at the time. But, something inside of me was intrigued and you can always build your interviewing skills, right?!

I began the interview process, had conversations with church staff, volunteers and kids, and I just knew that God was up to something. I was looking for red flags but I found none. The only two things standing in the way of this new adventure were votes and my fear of stepping out of my comfort zone. Fear of the Lord out of reverence is acceptable, but fear of the unknown wasn't a good enough excuse. I needed to take a small step of faith and I'm so glad I did!

Q: What fires you up about leading children to God? A: I love hanging out with kids, worshipping with them and showing them that learning about their Lord and Savior can be so much fun! But, I also consider the opportunity to have transformational conversations with kids to be an absolute privilege that I do not take lightly.

Kids say some funny things, but they can also be so profound. Getting to answer questions for a child that may lead him or her to a relationship with Jesus brings me so much joy, but I don't want to experience that alone. One of the coolest

16 Fall 2019

things that I get to do is share what I've gotten to know about a child with their parent(s). To see a parents' face light up and the tears in their eyes as they hear about their sweet baby is what partnering in ministry is all about!

Q: What big goals do you have for KIDlothian for the rest of 2019 and into 2020? A: The three main goals of our team are to Provoke Discovery, Provide Community, and Partner with Parents. In this upcoming year, we are striving to create an engaging environment that kids can truly be themselves in and build relationships with their small group leaders and other kids in their same phase of life. We also want to cue parents into all of our conversations and provide resources to better equip them to continue those conversations at home. We've also got some exciting events happening that you won't want to miss!

You can keep up-to-date with KIDlothian by finding them on Facebook, Instagram @kidlothian, or at fbcmidlo.com/children!
