Did you come to the Lord through a special event?
On April 24-26, our community will be hosting the Will Graham Celebration! This special event provides a wonderful opportunity for many to hear the gospel message of Jesus Christ, some for the very first time. As this celebration approaches, some may be asking the question, “Can this event really have an impact? Well, we asked a few people to help us recount how the Lord has used special events to make an impact on their spiritual life.

This past week I was visiting one of our nursing homes and encountered a staff person that I had known for quite some time. This person greeted me and asked if I was still a minister at First Baptist Church. I responded, “Yes, I am here to visit with some of our members.” They asked me if I knew where everyone was located in the nursing home and I reluctantly said, “No.” They were very gracious to help me find the rooms. As they were looking up the room numbers, they inquired about our church and asked if they could come by and speak to me. My response was, “Absolutely.” I gave this person my business card and I went on my way to make the visits. A couple of days later, I received a call from this person and they wanted to come by and visit with me immediately. I was working on a project that had a deadline and I thought to myself, I do not have time for this visit. However, I agreed for them to come by and I would make time for them. I will admit to you I preferred for this person to visit me at another time, but I believe God reminded me that this was not about me or about my interruption. It was about what God was about to do in this encounter. God humbled me when this person came in and began to share with me their story about their life and how they had quit attending church due to some personal issues. As we shared, we spoke of a merciful and loving God that so many of us have encountered and know. This person just needed some encouragement, acceptance, truthfulness, and grace. Many times we allow our “busyness” to limit God’s work in and

Personal Note... Kathryn and I want to express our deepest appreciation for your generosity in celebrating our 30 years of service together. We are honored and humbled to serve in such a great church called First Baptist Church of Owensboro, Ky. We love you and “thank God upon every remembrance of you.” Thank you for all of the blessings these past 30 years.
Church Business Administrator Conference... I recently attended a conference at Guidestone Financial Resources in Dallas, Texas. Our church participates in Guidestone’s Health insurance plan for our full-time staff as well as the retirement program. There are so many changes going on in healthcare and the landscape is continually changing due to the Affordable Care Act. Two days of the conference will be primarily focused on how healthcare reform affects the church. Our church is very generous on how well it supports the staff. It is important to make sure we are being good stewards in this area.

“Give ear to my words, O Lord; give heed to my sighing. Listen to the sound of my cry, my King and my God, for to you I pray.” Psalm 5:1-2 (NRSV)
“Give ear to my words, O LORD; give heed to my sighing. Listen to the sound of my cry, my King and my God, for to you I pray.” Psalm 5:1-2 (NRSV) Jack sat at the kitchen table with the weight of the world on his shoulders. He was trusting God’s promises to guide him through the ordeal of his wife’s illness, but with each day it seemed that those promises were of His being with him through the impending loss. The process had been long, and the daily routines of caring for his wife had made the walls of their house seem small, so he welcomed the opportunity to walk outside to get the mail. Now Jack wasn’t the type of person to display his feelings in public, however, in this moment he couldn’t keep it in any longer. His raw emotions erupted as he raised his hands toward heaven and shouted, “My God! Help me!” This actually happened to a good
friend of mine, though I’ve changed his name for this article. Sometimes I think that we, as Christians, feel that this type of reaction reveals a lack of faith, or that God wouldn’t be pleased with such a display – simply trust in Him and suppress your emotions. You don’t have to look hard to discover a great deal of raw emotion in God’s Word. In fact, it is full of it. The book of Psalms begins to make a lot more sense when you’re going through life’s trials and uncertainties. Read through them and you’ll see that they speak to all of life. They have been able to touch the hearts of many people in all sorts of circumstances. We can relate to the Psalms very personally, and their honesty endears them to us. More than simply teaching us about God, the Psalms help us express our innermost feelings to God in all of life, reminding us that God has created our emotions as well as our minds and that He desires that we yield our
whole selves to him… in all things. “The psalmists don’t pretend to have all the answers. Instead, they ask genuine questions and often cry out in agony . . . the psalmists are quite human—so much so, in fact, their humanity can almost be embarrassing to us at times.” (William J. Petersen). However, almost every Psalm ends with the psalmists declaring that God knows best, and that He is in control of all things. May we all learn to give God our whole selves, and in doing so, discover what he wants to teach us in all moments of life.
Sunday, April 19 3:00 pm-7:00 pm Room Location TBD This class is for NEW MEMBERS, NEW BELIEVERS, GUESTS and anyone who wants to learn more about FBC.
I want to take the opportunity to personally invite you to our upcoming Discover FBC class. The purpose of this class is to help people understand exactly who First Baptist Church is, what it means to be a member of FBC, and why it even matters to be a member. First Baptist is a wonderful church! Personally, I am blessed to be considered a member of this faith family!
Often, it is quite difficult to learn about the church. The people, the leaders, the programs, the ministries, the mission, the purpose, the building…all of this is so new and confusing. So as a means of trying to help those who are interested in FBC, we want to take an afternoon and meet as a group, face to face, and talk about these things. The class is open to anyone with a desire to know more about the church and the membership process. We will cover such topics as: · · · · ·
What is the Gospel? What it means to be a follower/disciple of Jesus Christ Why membership matters! What FBC Owensboro believes (as Southern Baptists) The mission and purpose of FBC
· · · · ·
What goes on at FBC (A review of worship, ministry, and mission opportunities) Discovering your purpose at FBC Introduction to the staff A tour of the facilities Q & A Session
On April 19, we are hosting one of our quarterly “Discover FBC” classes. The class will be held on Sunday afternoon from 3-7PM. We have chosen to have the class in one extended session. Yes, this is quite a long afternoon, but we will be providing dinner and childcare (if needed)! Since we will be providing dinner and childcare, it is important for you to register so that we can plan accordingly. You can find further information & register in a number of ways: · · ·
Online @ our website: www.fbcowb.org Email with Michele Burton: mburton@fbcowb.org Phone (ask for Michele): 270.683.3505
When emailing or calling to register, please let us know who will be attending (including whether or not childcare will be needed…and the name and ages of your children).
Please register by Wednesday, April 15. This class not only provides a great opportunity for you to get to know us, but it also provides a great way for us to get to know you! Please let us know if you have any questions.
We look forward to you joining us for Discover FBC!
In his book entitled The Cross of Christ, John Stott begins the fourth chapter (The Problem of Forgiveness) with the following questions: • Why should our forgiveness depend on Christ’s death? • Why does God not simply forgive us, without the necessity of the cross? These are essential questions that we must face and engage, especially at Easter, and especially in a culture that places little value on the cross of Christ. Stott spends the rest of the fourth chapter elaborating on the twofold answer to these questions, but I want to help us think through this topic of forgiveness by briefly summarizing and shedding light on a biblical response. Have you ever heard someone say, “Why can’t God simply forgive us as we forgive others, without the whole cross thing?” The person who genuinely asks this question and believes that God can just flippantly forgive does not truly understand the seriousness or weight of sin. In addition, they have not rightly considered the majesty of God. To do such a thing would actually impede on God’s character. Yes, He is loving, good, and forgiving, but at the same exact time He is holy, just, and righteous. In Exodus 34:6-7, God gives a description of Himself by saying, “The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression in sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty…” Did you just catch that last part? Wow, that explodes about 90% of what people today think they know about God! So why can’t He clear those whose sinful nature and sinful acts have made them guilty?
Habakkuk 1:13
helps us understand a little more by communicating, “Your eyes are too pure to look on evil; you cannot tolerate wrong.” Psalm 5:4 assists us as well by saying, “For you are not a God who delights in wickedness; evil may not dwell with you.”

Father forgive them for they do not know what they are doing. Luke 23:34
Father forgive them for they do not know what they are doing. Luke 23:34 These are some of Jesus’ last words while He suffered the most excruciating death. From these words we can see his heart and his love for others. How can we forgive and love like this? I think the first step is to focus on others and not make it about ourselves, just like He did while He was on the cross.
A new commandment I give you. As I have loved you, After we are hurt by someone, we can sometimes become bitter. We can point fingers and put the blame on others so you must love one another. John 13:34 when in reality no matter who is at fault, we are to blame if we are not forgiving. There have been many situations in my life with parents, family, and friends where I have cut off relationships because THEY had done wrong to me, because THEY had made bad decisions, because THEY hurt me. By not forgiving these individuals am I showing God that I do not have the faith in Him to take care of the situations? Am I hurting Him by not forgiving since He paid the ultimate price for my sin and forgave me? Who am I to not forgive when our Father, in His last hours forgave the men who were putting Him to death? I forgive others by praying and remembering the agony He went through for us. Someone’s actions and or words towards me will never compare to the suffering He went through on the cross. With forgiveness, you find peace and you find your relationship with Him will grow deeper as you begin to love like He loves. My prayer for our church family is that we may love others like Christ loves us. That we can show unconditional love that can bring peace into our hearts and souls. With that love, we can forgive one another for wrongdoings and misunderstandings and we can show our faith as we live out God’s command.
A new commandment I give you. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. John 13:34

REMINDER:
Resurrection Day is coming! It is by far my favorite “holiday”! It hasn’t always been that way though. As a kid I loved Christmas for the family get-togethers, food, and, of course, presents. Easter was pretty fun because we were able to hunt for candy-filled eggs at the annual church Easter egg hunt. My favorite holiday growing up happened August 18th every year. Some would not call it a “holiday”, but it was for me. It was the best one of the year. It was a day that was all about me! Family, friends, presents, and cake all together to celebrate my birthday! (Go ahead and put that on you calendar. I accept presents all year long!) However, after coming to Christ at 16 years old, my favorite holiday has slowly changed. Year after year, as I grow in my faith, I have a greater appreciation of what Christ has done for me. I have a greater appreciation for the life He led. A greater appreciation for the sacrifice He made. A greater appreciation for the power He has! This Easter, be intentional with your kids about Gospel (Life, Death, Burial, Resurrection of Jesus). Teach them about his life, his love and his legacy. Despite what we parents think, statistics show that parents are the greatest influence in the lives of their children. Not their friends, not teachers or coaches, not youth pastors, but parents (I googled it, so it must be true!). So grab your kids together right before bed (or whenever is most convenient) during Passion Week (Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday). Grab your bible and have a short family devotion emphasizing Jesus’ final week leading up to the resurrection. Here is an example of what we will try to do this Easter. • • • • • • • •
Sunday, March 29th - Read John 12:12-19 Monday, March 30th - Read Luke 19:45-48 Tuesday, March 31st - Read John 12:20-36 Wednesday, April 1st - Read John 12:37-50 Thursday, April 2nd - Read John 13:1-20 Friday, April 3rd - Read John 18 Saturday, April 4th - Read John 19 Sunday, April 5th - Read John 20
Let your kids read some of the passage or all of it. If your kids are too little to read (like a couple of mine), then run down to LifeWay and pick up a children’s Bible with colorful pictures and read the stories out of it. Whatever you do, make it a special time where your kids see the importance of the season at hand!
Seniors will meet at Panera Bread on Sunday, April 12 at 9:45 am.
THANK YOU On behalf of my family, I just wanted to take a moment to thank everyone for your prayers for our newest addition, Judah, over the past month. We especially thank you for praying for him the days after delivery while recovering in NICU. His quick recovery can only be attributed to a gracious God who answered the prayers of His people. We are very humbled by the outpouring of love from this church for our family. Thanks to everyone who prayed, prepared dinners, and brought gifts. You have blessed us beyond what we deserve.
FOM Offering 2015: Goal of $215,000 | Total as of 3/5/15: $21,920
First on Mission (FOM) is the Global Mission Offering of First Baptist Owensboro, consisting of five major offerings. We encourage our church family to give to FOM any time throughout the year. When you give to FOM, you are supporting mission work from Kentucky to the ends of the world. Budget Giving to First Baptist Over 16% of your giving to the budget goes to mission work here in Owensboro, across this nation, and to the ends of the earth. This includes around 10% that goes to the Cooperative Program, which supports Southern Baptist missionaries and their work here in Kentucky, across North America, and to the nations. Lottie Moon Christmas Offering (International Mission Board) – 75% 100% of your giving to Lottie Moon goes to support the 4,700+ IMB missionaries serving internationally for our Southern Baptist Churches. The IMB’s mission is evangelizing, discipling, and planting reproducing churches among all peoples in fulfillment of the Great Commission. Annie Armstrong Easter Offering (NAMB) – 10% Reason we give: To support the
efforts of the North American Mission Board’s Send North America strategy, as missionaries and church planters push back lostness in the United States and Canada. 100% of your giving goes to support the 2,000 church planters, 3,500 chaplains, and 1,200 student missionaries. To keep up with population growth and to offset the 1,000 churches we lose each year, we need to start new churches at a pace of 15,000 every 10 years. Eliza Broadus Offering (Kentucky Baptist Convention) – 6% 100% of your giving goes to support church planters and ministries across the state of Kentucky. The Kentucky Baptist Convention is a cooperative missions and ministry organization made up of nearly 2,400 autonomous Baptist churches in Kentucky. Sunrise Children Services – 5% Sunrise is one of several Kentucky Baptist agencies. They provide care and hope for hurting families and children through Christcentered ministries like family services, foster care, and residential care homes. Oneida Baptist Institute – 4% Oneida is one of several Kentucky Baptist agencies. Their purpose is
to provide young people with a high quality Christian education. What began as a ministry to mountain children grew into an outreach to young people from around the world. OBI provides a safe, structured environment where students can learn life lessons of responsibility and selfdiscipline. Why does Lottie Moon receive so much more? Lottie Moon receives the most because it is the largest area of ministry with the most people in darkness, the world. How do I contribute to FOM? ⇒ Through online giving: firstbaptist.securegive.com ⇒ By using the designated envelopes available in the pew or the church office. ⇒ By Kiosk in the foyer outside our Worship Center ⇒ Designating your offering to FOM through your regular giving. All checks should be made out to First Baptist Church with a designation to First on Mission.

That the light of Christ would shine in your life and draw others to Him. That as we celebrate Easter this weekend we will remember what Jesus did for us. That we would be people willing to reach out to someone else with the love of God. That all who say they believe could perceive the great love God has for them. A prayer of thanksgiving for love that over comes, heals and redeems, bringing us life, hope and help. That those in need of a Savior would see the need for humbleness and repentance. That God would already be drawing those to Himself that have been beaten up by life. That we will see healing in our relationships, in our homes and at our jobs. That the body of Christ will be unified through the Celebration weekend. That we would allow God to awaken us to the needs around us. Ask God to help us to remove the blinders from our eyes that keep us bound. That the preaching of the Word of God would bring great harvest. For those on your Bring a Friend list as you prepare to invite them to the Celebration. That through this Celebration God will restore hurting and broken lives. That those in bondage to addictions of all kinds would be delivered as they are saved. For those who will be volunteering as Counselors for Celebration weekend. For those who will be serving as Ushers. For those arranging venues. For Will Graham and all those who will be platform guests at the Celebration. That God would bless the local office staff, the Executive Team and Working Teams. For the staff at the convention center. For the logistics and all the final preparations. That the Holy Spirit would abide throughout the weekend. That God would use the message of Will Graham to touch and transform lives. That the hearts of the young and old would be tender toward God. That the message of hope would reach beyond any barriers. That those who came to Christ over the weekend will be properly nurtured. That every church who received names would be diligent in follow-up. For those who will be leading Neighborhood Discovery Groups. That those who were saved will be filled with faith daily.
