Christians and churches everywhere a unique opportunity to share their faith. It also gives us an open door to reach the unchurched. Statistics continue to tell us that the best means through which people come into the Church is through a personal invitation. We have already begun to pray, prepare, and plan for our Easter service, which will be on April 1st. One of the challenges for us this year will be the timing of Spring Break, which begins the weekend before Easter. There will still be plenty of opportunities for us to invite unchurched people to our worship. I want to encourage you to begin praying daily for those around you to invite. The Bible says God is not willing that any should perish, but it is incumbent upon
Secondly, I would ask that you pray for our students. They are an important part of the church and they need our support. There is always a need for more people to be involved in the student ministry. Pray for the Lord to send more workers in all areas of our church. We are grateful to JJ who had been providing leadership to our students for the last several weeks. Just recently JJ felt the need to back away from that position as he is a full-time student and has other responsibilities. We appreciate JJ and his love for our church and students. grew up in a poor environment in a small farming town in Ohio. In fact, as a family of eight, we
lived in a double car garage on a small farm, raising chickens to sell eggs and growing vegetables to consume and sell. That was home. Did I realize how awful that was? No! I knew only what I knew. As I hinted and without going into a lot of detail, my mother ruled our home and not in a positive or pleasant manner. By today’s standards, my siblings and I would probably have been removed and put into foster homes. But it was our lives at the time. At the age of about 10 or 11, I was ironing clothes and watching Billy Graham on TV (which was not permitted in our home; TV was only allowed on Sunday evening to watch the Disney program). As you can guess, we were home alone while our parents were gone, which was most of the time. After a very rough encounter with my mother, I had felt so broken and full of despair. Then Billy said, “Just ask God to lead you,” followed by the singing of “Just As I Am”. I can remember everything about that day and even my very first prayer. I had tears streaming down my face, and I went to our bathroom so no one would see me crying. As I looked towards the ceiling, I asked God to help me, to please show me a path. I believe that is where I found the

I wanted to be and do better, and a desire burned within me to learn all I could. I know that through God’s hands I am one of three of us who finished high school and the only one to complete a college education. There are times I wear my heart on my sleeve, but my heart is so full of compassion for other people. To this day, I have no regrets. As strict or as awful as times were during my childhood, I have come away with many more blessings than I feel I have rights to. Holy Week Devotional by the Ministerial Staff of First Baptist Owensboro
D
uring Holy Week and Easter—March 25th–April 1st— reflect on the week leading up to Jesus' death and resurrection with daily Scriptures and devotionals from our ministerial staff.
Palm Sunday by Bob Farmer on Matthew 21:1–11
On their way from Jericho, Jesus and the disciples neared Bethphage, on the slope of the Mount of Olives just outside Jerusalem. Two disciples went into the village, as Jesus told them, to bring back a donkey and its colt. How did Jesus know that there would be a donkey and a colt waiting for Him in the village? Because Jesus had a plan. Jesus knew He was going to Jerusalem. God has had a plan of salvation for us since the foundation of the world. Jesus is that plan of salvation. Before man was created, God knew we would need a savior, and He had a plan to send us His Son to die in our place. This same event in the Gospel of Matthew focuses on the prophecy in Zechariah 9:9 mentioning a donkey and a colt. Jesus’ actions fulfilled the prophet’s words. Jesus also knew He would 4 | Connect Magazine

by Ginger Mayfield on John 12:1–11 In an act of worship, Mary knelt to the ground and washed Jesus’ feet. She then broke her very expensive bottle of perfume and used it all for Jesus, pouring it onto His head and feet. She wiped His feet with her hair. It was an act of whole-hearted devotion. She did not seem to care that the perfume was costly or that the disciples would criticize her sacrifice. She did not seem to care that Jewish women did not let down their hair in public. She cared only about spending time worshipping Jesus. John's focus on Mary’s anointing of Jesus points to her great humility. Oh, that I would be as humble as Mary,
ther, glorify your name!”, and the voice from heaven confirmed that He had and would indeed be glorified again. What important message did Jesus share in these last days? He told them/ us that we too must glorify the Father. And we do so by dying to self, like a seed must die in order for it to produce many seeds. Dying to self can also bring a troubled heart, because we don’t want to sacrifice the things of this world that seem to give us pleasure. But by laying down this worldly life and following Jesus, we are assured of eternal life and— like Jesus—bring glory to the Father.

by Derry Billingsley on Mark 14:12–26 A devotional thought on the Lord’s Supper typically centers on remembering Jesus. Here’s another thought on the above passage: Jesus knew His purpose on this earth. Throughout Scripture, including the Lord’s Supper, you won’t find Jesus wasting a moment, word, or action. Why? Jesus knew His Heavenly Father, and as a result, knew God’s will for His life on earth. Have you sought God’s will for you? If so, are you content in His purpose for your life? I’ve heard it put this way: what if the eagle wished to swim? And what if the fish wanted to fly? You’d consider it absurd. But that’s what many Christians try to do. Instead of rejoicing and being content with the unique abilities that God has given them, they try to be somebody else. Accept yourself as you are, and let God fulfill His divine purpose through you.
Why is the answer to Pilate’s question so important? In John 8:31–32, Jesus told believing Jews, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Jesus was explicit that He was the truth that sets men free, free from bondage to sin and death. His work on the cross made this freedom possible, and all men are called to know the truth, Jesus Christ, in order to find eternal freedom.

by Paul Strahan on Luke 24:1–12
On the greatest day of the year for Christians, I am reminded that Jesus is neither on a cross nor in a tomb, but He is ALIVE! What a morning that must have been when Mary Martha, Peter, and the others ran to see the place where Jesus had been. Can you imagine what they must have felt? Can you imagine if a loved one of yours were suddenly alive again after three days? The question that was asked of those looking for Jesus is a reminder that He came to defeat death, sin, and the grave. The two men asked those pres-
