How did you see God @ Work in your own life and the lives of those who came…? iPlay | VBS Alexis Scott VBS was a wonderful week here at FBC Owensboro! I had the privilege of teaching two groups from the YMCA and Girls, Inc. It was such a blessing being around these fun kids, their wonderful leaders, and excellent volunteers from our church. Throughout the week, the lessons focused on Jesus—His birth, life, ministry, death, and resurrection. Daily teachings came from the book of Daniel. One of my favorite parts was sharing truths from God’s Word with the children. Some did not know the stories, and it was exciting to see their faces and hear their responses, such as: ”What happened next?!” and “This is awesome!” Seeds were planted. Let’s continue to pray for all the children and their families to draw close to Jesus. To God be the glory, great things He has done, and will continue to do!

Matt Robinson I have been looking for new avenues in which to serve at FBC, and decided to try coaching at iPlay soccer camp. I signed up at the last minute, and ended up getting blessed beyond measure. I was able to invite the son of a friend, whose family does not attend church, and have seen questions about God already being asked in their family. iPlay soccer camp was a reminder about how much God works through sports and through His servants, regardless of skill level. It's not how skilled you are with a soccer ball, but your willingness to serve children. I loved my second grade group, and will continue to lift them up in prayer.

Bettie Richards I have worked in VBS with children from the YMCA for the past several years. Many of them have no believers in their lives nor have they ever attended church. Their circumstances in life remind me of Paul’s words in Romans 10:14...How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him in whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher (teacher)? God truly worked in the lives of this year’s group! The music spoke to one young man in such a way that he asked

how he could be in a video. Another child got the message of King Nebuchadnezzar's pride as she played his role in the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. These same children received their very own Bible on the last day of VBS! I believe First Baptist has been called to bring good news of good things to these children!

Barbara Reynolds In John 10:10 Jesus said, “I have come that they may have life and have it in abundance." This year in Bible School, God blessed us with LIVES in abundance. When Suzie told me that our numbers would be around 320, it would have been a great time to panic, but I try to save panic for times when God is not in charge. One of the things I've learned in my 80 years is that if you're willing to step out of the boat, God will not only let you walk on the water, He'll bless you abundantly in the process. When He gives you a team that includes the experience and pure joy of Deb Schrooten and Beth Reynolds you know everything is under control. And then He adds a new member, Linda Young and Helen Jones as well. You can only say Thank You! And then the kids come in Monday morning and ask, "When do we have cheese biscuits?" Life's abundant!

Dale Poole What do 127 kids, 45 volunteer coaches, 145 soccer balls, 18 pop-up goals, 4 full size goals, 521 popsicles, and 1 soccer field add up to? One great FBC iPlay Soccer Camp!!! On July 7, 8, and 9 the 3rd annual FBC iPlay Soccer Camp was held each evening at the OHS Soccer Stadium. Local children from kindergarten through the 5th grade attended with one coming from as far as Nashville. The young soccer athletes were coached in ball mastery skills and games that teach the game of soccer. At each evening’s end, the children were told the progressive story of the John 3:16 Soccer Ball. Parents expressed their approval of the camp many times by saying that their children could not wait for the next evening’s session. One parent pointed at the “Serve Owensboro” t-shirts that all the coaches were wearing and exclaimed, “That is just what you are doing!! Thank you very much!!”

Evan Overall I worked at VBS with the kindergarteners June 22-26 and I witnessed GOD at work through the music and the stories. Judy M. was even there to teach the children about her job and the place she worked. I know the songs were getting stuck in their heads because they were getting stuck in mine! GOD worked with this so that when they would sing these songs, their friends/family would hear the songs. Then they could learn something about GOD. The stories were told by Leigh Ann Strahan. She would get the class together to tell the story and lesson. There were even activities to help the kids remember the lesson. GOD worked with this because when the children heard the stories they would go and tell their friends/ family and they could learn about the Bible as well.

Cortney Inklebarger A few weeks ago, I was blessed to join the team hosting iPlay Soccer Camp! Having worked several other community events with First Baptist, I went into this event expecting much of the same - greeting families, playing games, serving snacks... And, while all of those things were present and good, this event was different for me. We weren't hosting the event on "our turf" - down by the blue bridge; we were right in the middle of Owensboro at the OHS soccer field. The community wasn't coming to us, we were going to the community and, somehow, that detail opened new doors for me. As an educator in public schools, it is often hard to navigate how you are to share the Gospel with your mission field in a place where you are governed to keep quiet. Although I pray daily that God's love would show through me, I often feel confined as to how bold I can be in that arena. However, these few days were so encouraging to me as some of my own students entered the field each night. The door is now open - the bridge built! Even if only a handful at a time, these students can now make a connection between Jesus and me. A seed was planted that showed them why I love the way I love, because they heard during the week that Jesus first loved me! Often times, we forget God can use us on mission right here in our own community - in a place where we are most invested. I pray we continue going to our community, reaching outward, and investing in those right around us! I thank God for using this week to remind me of the mission field I'm called to daily, and reminding me that He is able to open doors even when they are seemingly closed!

Tribute to Dr. David Nelson In early July 1984, I met Dr. David Nelson to interview for the Minister of Recreation position at First Baptist Church of Owensboro. My former pastor, Dr. Eldred Taylor, knew Dr. Nelson and highly recommended giving serious consideration to an interview with First Baptist Church of Owensboro. I can remember I was so nervous when I met Dr. Nelson, because of his long tenure and strong leadership at First Baptist Church as well as with Kentucky Baptist life. Serving with Eldred Taylor in Somerset, Kentucky prepared me for serving in a great church like First Baptist Church of Owensboro. Both churches were among the leaders in Cooperative Program giving and both churches had strong and respected leaders. After interviewing with Dr. Nelson and the search committee, and after deep prayer for discernment of God’s will, I accepted the call as the Minister of Recreation at First Baptist Church of Owensboro. In my early years of ministry, I came to respect the leadership of Dr. Nelson and how he led the church to be such a strong mission-minded church. I always respected his ability to lead the church and his openness to exploring new ministries. The other important element for me was the longevity of the staff at that time. He had two staff members who had been loyal to him and who were strongly supportive of his leadership. That relationship between staff members was very important to me because it indicated there was a healthy staff connection. Honestly, I felt blessed to be able to serve on a staff that all got along with each other. It felt like we were a team heading in the same direction. I learned quickly we could call Dr. Nelson “Preacher”. Most everyone who was on staff called him “Preacher” and he responded to that name. But I also discovered that he was more than a preacher, he was a pastor. I believe this was one of his

greatest gifts as Pastor of First Baptist Church. He visited people in the hospital every day and he visited people who were prospects for our church. I can also remember every Sunday he would be outside the door of Adult II greeting all of the people coming into the Adult II Sunday School department. When I came on staff, this was the largest Sunday School Department in the church. The Adult II department now makes up our Adult 5 and 6 departments. He also had a great relationship with the church as a whole. He would play golf most every Thursday which allowed him to be just a “regular person”. It allowed him to fellowship with others while enjoying a sport he truly loved. He built a tremendous amount of relationships through the sport of golf. Most importantly, I will always remember his utmost concern for his staff and to make sure we were taken care of financially as well as spiritually. He prayed for us constantly and he always showed his concern for us. Thank you Dr. Nelson, good and faithful servant.

June Quarterly Business Meeting In our June Quarterly Business meeting the church approved to accept a contract with Impact Stewardship Services to conduct a Capital Campaign for our Phase 2 project. We will be sharing more about this campaign next month in the Connect Magazine. We also approved a revision on our RBS Design Group contract for the detailed plans for Phase 2.

Curious of what Southern Baptists believe? Want to better understand our beliefs on certain biblical topics? Whether new or old to the faith, new or old to FBC, join us as we explain how our Baptist identity is built on the rock-solid foundation of God's Word. This study examines in detail the 18 doctrines outlined in the Baptist Faith and Message statement. Combining biblical insight with historical and contemporary illustrations, the authors of our study book help to understand essential Baptist beliefs, identify the biblical foundation for these beliefs, and apply the beliefs to our Christian walk.

Wednesday Nights: August 19 - October 7

Excerpt from Discover FBC Booklet The Holy Bible was written by men divinely inspired and is God's revelation of Himself to man. It is a perfect treasure of divine instruction. It has God for its author, salvation for its end, and truth, without any mixture of error, for its matter. Therefore, all Scripture is totally true and trustworthy. It reveals the principles by which God judges us, and therefore is, and will remain to the end of the world, the true center of Christian union, and the supreme standard by which all human conduct, creeds, and religious opinions should be tried. All Scripture is a testimony to Christ, who is Himself the focus of divine revelation. – Baptist Faith and Message 2000 THE BIBLE IS AUTHORITATIVE We recognize the Bible’s authority because we recognize God as its author. If God is the author of the Scriptures, every word of the Bible bears God’s own authority. Christians have no right to dismiss or question any biblical text, for all Scripture is God-breathed. “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” -2 Timothy 3:16-17

THE BIBLE IS INFALLIBLE God never fails, nor does His Word. We can trust that the Bible will always accomplish God’s purposes. “For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.” -Isaiah 55:11

The Bible is… •

Authoritative

Infallible

Inerrant

Sufficient

Eternal

THE BIBLE IS INERRANT The Bible is truth – all truth – and contains no error of any kind. “Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.” -John 17:17 (Words of Jesus Christ) “The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple;
 the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure,
 enlightening the eyes;
the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever;
the rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether.” -Psalm 19:7-9 THE BIBLE IS SUFFICIENT We are not to add to the Bible or to subtract from it. Relying on the wisdom of God found in the Bible, we are warned not to turn to the wisdom of the world. Our minds are to be captive to the Word of God, deciding all issues from biblical wisdom. “You shall not add to the word that I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God that I command you.” -Deuteronomy 4:2 THE BIBLE IS ETERNAL This is true simply because God is eternal. The Bible is completely fulfilled in Jesus Christ, the incarnate Word, and its truth endures forever. “All flesh is grass, and all its beauty is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades when the breath of the Lord blows on it; surely the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. -Isaiah 40:7-8

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. -2 Timothy 3:16-17

BE

Joshua 1:6 In our “fast-moving, schedules always changing, four-kids-crazy days” there is one thing that always stays the same in our home: loving the Lord through Scripture. I use Scripture to encourage our children, as well as discipline them. One of the scriptures I use the most is from the book of Joshua. Joshua 1:6 starts off saying, Be strong and courageous... I tell my kids to be strong when they get hurt, when someone is mean to them, when they are about to compete, when they leave for school…It’s just what I say: “Be strong.” A few years ago, I was putting our youngest in her walker. For some reason the walker was not locked underneath and when I put her in it, it collapsed with her sitting in it. Not a huge deal other than the fact that my thumb was now caught underneath. One handed, I tried raising the walker (let me remind you she was still sitting in it). I then called for our oldest daughter, Peyton, to come and help. My hand was underneath so I couldn’t see what was going on, but as she was helping raise the walker she realized that there was blood streaming from my hand. She let go and took off screaming. After a few minutes, I managed to get my hand out and our two-year-old daughter, Layla, walked up and said, “Mom, just be strong.“ Just be strong! I couldn’t help but think about how many times she had heard me say those words and then it hit me: how many times does God encourage us to just be strong? Are we truly listening and having faith in His words? The book of Joshua is one of my favorite books in the Bible. It shows a man who was patient in following God. It shows a man who was dedicated and obedient to God. It shows a man who was courageous and had amazing faith. When God spoke, Joshua listened and obeyed. He was a model to the Israelites, and because of this Israel remained faithful to God. Can you imagine what our children, our schools, and our families would be like if we modeled like Joshua? If we truly lived out our obedience in faith in front of them, what would it look like? Every chapter in the book, Joshua is showing his obedience to God. In Joshua 3:12-13, He tells Joshua, Now choose 12 men from the tribes of Israel, one from each tribe. The priest will carry the Ark of the Lord, the Lord of all the earth. As soon as their feet touch the water, the flow of water will be cut off upstream, and the river will stand up like a wall. This was no small river! It says that the Jordan was overflowing its banks, but Joshua trusted God and knew that He would not leave him. Joshua knew if he was obedient, God would do what He said. What water is God asking you to step into? What is going on in your life that you are afraid to take the next step? The writer of Joshua tells us many times to be strong and courageous. Actually, in Joshua 1:9 he commands ...be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. Those words are reassuring to me each and every day. I don't know what tomorrow holds, but He does. What I do know, because Scripture never changes, is that He will be with me, parting that water and guiding me through each step.

Sundays beginning September 13 5:30-7:00 pm | Location TBD

Let me first say thank you for praying for us (the youth) as we traveled to Panama City Beach, Florida for summer camp this year. It was a much needed trip. Youth Camp provided a great opportunity for our group to worship, play, and be unified in a way that may not have happened at other camps. Over the course of the week we saw several decisions made. We had a couple trust Jesus for Salvation and a couple others rededicate their lives. Please continue to pray for us (adult leaders) and those who made decisions, as we begin to personally disciple each one. Thanks again for praying for our students. The Lord, again, was faithful.

As school begins this month, so does our Youth stuff. Sunday School promotion will be on August 9th and we will begin our Wednesday Night worship on August 19th. This year on Wednesday Nights we will be looking at our knowledge of God. (Who He is? How do we know about God? How does God pursue his children? How does God’s mercy and justice go together? How big is the God we serve? ) If you are looking for a place to serve on Wednesday Nights, you are welcome to come hang out with us!
