Kent Moore Several times throughout our trip we made it a priority to visit different temples containing multiple gods that the E people worshipped. We did this specifically to pray that the Most High God would free the E people from the fear and idolatry that controls them spiritually and that He would open their eyes, hearts, ears, and minds to His Truth. These temples were usually built on the highest peaks, and as we looked out at the numerous homes that spotted the hillsides in every direction, my heart broke because of the darkness that these people didn’t even know they were in. On one specific occasion, after hiking almost one mile straight up the side of a mountain, we reached a temple where I was able to read Isaiah 44 aloud in the presence of the statue of Buddah. As I read, I prayed God would reveal Himself to the E people and that they would realize their sin and the futility of worshipping images made by the hands of man. At the same time though, I also praised God that He had seen fit to

appy Easter! Actually, Easter isn’t a holiday that is recognized on the island. Years ago, the Catholic Church was given the option to select which holidays that Christians would celebrate and rather than choose Easter, the leaders chose to celebrate All Saints Day. Sad, but this is a true reflection of the place that we call home. As the body of

Christ, we still celebrate this amazing day with believers on the island, regardless of the government’s stance on this special day in our lives. I sat in an old building in the middle of downtown and watched a large multitude of people hurrying about their day like every other day of the week. I would describe it as chaotic. As I looked through the window, my focus changed and I realized at one point that I was looking through a fractured windowpane. The pane was severely fractured and I would guess there were no less than 200 individual pieces of all sizes and shapes still connected in the frame. I was quickly reminded of some of the people that we are currently engaging in ministry…shattered people, somehow holding it together…people that are prosti-

However, this group of people are sharply dressed, they know the Word of God, they can recite Scripture, they sing along during the time of worship at church, they attend the meetings, they give money, but the reality is that they have traded being a disciple of Jesus to being a good church member. To this group, Easter isn’t just any ordinary day! This is a day to dress up, go to church, and after church visit their extended family for a meal. The resurrection has lost power in their lives. They have gone through the motions their entire life. It’s just another Easter like all of the others. New clothes, lots of candy, and a 30-minute message from the Bible. However, there are people in this group that are realizing that there must be more to following Jesus than going to church. We are learning that a lot of

If you find yourself in a season of complacency…there’s still time. Do you want to experience the power of the resurrection? If so, repent. How do you restore the power of the resurrection in your life? Obey Jesus. Jesus gave His followers clear instructions that gave them purpose and brought transformational power to others. You want to see HIS power? Heed the instructions of Jesus and “go make disciples”. There is no greater joy, nothing more exhilarating than helping a friend, loved one, or a complete stranger make a decision to give their life to Christ. This Easter, let’s commit to honor Him by proclaiming the Good News. As you pursue your Jerusalem, we’ll continue to pursue the ends of the Earth. Together, we can accomplish the Great Commission! 

PARENTING SEMINAR Friday & Saturday, April 28–29

ApParent Privilege Apparent Privilege will arm parents with Biblical understanding and up-to-the-minute research to show them the unparalleled opportunity they have to be the primary influence of their children. It will give parents a Biblical view of parenting, answer questions and concerns we all have, and help them understand how Christian parenting must become more than taking your children to church. Participants will receive the book ApParent Privilege (one per household) along with a companion listening guide. This seminar is a prerequisite to participation in the Dedication of Families service on Sunday, May 7th. Friday: 6–8 PM (Dinner provided) Saturday: 9 AM–Noon (Breakfast starts at 8:30 AM) Register online at fbcowb.org/parent or by contacting the church office at 270-683-3505.

DEDICATION OF FAMILIES Sunday, May 7 in Both Morning Services

This is a special service where the parents and congregation join together in their commitment before God and one another to raise these new children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. FIRST ON MISSION FOCUS "Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world." —James 1:27

What is the mission of Sunrise? Sunrise Children's Services provides care and hope for hurting families and children through Christ-centered ministries. Sunrise Children's Services has been at the forefront in the fight to protect Kentucky's children since 1869. Today, Sunrise is a home for children who have been abused and neglected—children whose lives have been scarred by unspeakable physical, sexual, and emotional abuse—and who have been removed from their homes. From the president of our organization down to our direct care staff, our goal every day is to provide a place of refuge, of hope, of love, and of healing to these children whose lives have been devastated. For these children, Sunrise is a place where they can begin to feel safe, a place where they encounter adults who give unconditional love, a place where they can begin to learn that the world can be a good place.

How does Sunrise Children's Services help hurting children throughout Kentucky? SCS provides or assists those in need in the following: adoption, family services, foster care, independent living, psychiatric treatment, therapeutic residential care, VentureOn (support for those ages 18–21 who are no longer a part of the foster system), and youth support services.

How can I support Sunrise? You can give financial support by sacrificially giving to our First On Mission offering. Each year, First Baptist Owensboro gives 5% of our total First On Mission offering to Sunrise Children's Services. To give to the FOM offering, just designate FOM on your offering envelope, your check, or by designating an amount when giving online at fbcowb.org. Our online giving is located under the Resources menu item. If the Lord is calling you to give more than just financially, prayerfully consider fostering a child. SCS is seeking families to surround a child and invite him or her to experience a community that is the church made real in action, not just in word. Coming to the defense of the broken, showing the love of God to the helpless, creating an environment of love and support for the forgotten and seeking justice in the midst of chaos is the very calling of the church, and Sunrise works to fulfill that calling every day. To learn more about how you can foster a child through Sunrise Children's Services, visit sunrise.org and click on the Foster Parenting menu item.

DISCIPLE NOW 2017 by Will Smith, Students & Missions

Our Student Ministry had the opportunity to participate in the city-wide Disciple Now (DNow) weekend, March 17–18. If you are not familiar with DNow weekends, they are a specifically designed weekend that encourages and challenges students to grow closer in their walk with the Lord. We joined five other churches at Bellevue Baptist Church for a weekend of worship, Bible study, and community service projects. Saturday we had the opportunity to serve at three different locations. We served at Friends of Sinners, Crossroads Outreach Center, and the YMCA. Our crew was phenomenal! We shoveled dirt, moved rocks, cleaned floors, wiped down doors and baseboards, removed

brush, cleaned up garden planters, and a few other things along the way. They worked extremely hard and never once complained. Our students were able to be the “hands and feet” of Jesus throughout our community. I consider it a great blessing to have served along side them on DNow weekend!

Student & Leader Testimonies Garrett Mayfield: "I enjoyed serving the community, spending time with friends, and worshipping God." JJ Poole (Leader): "DNow was a great weekend, and I'm very thankful for the opportunity to help lead our youth. Being able to gather with other churches in our community was incredible. I was extremely proud of how hard our youth worked during the volunteer projects."

LOVE TO THE UTTERMOST

DEVOTIONAL READINGS FOR HOLY WEEK Easter is a special time of celebration for the Christian. The church gathers to celebrate the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ! Sure, that is our intention each and every week and there are no days that are more particularly holy than others, but for most of church history there has been a special emphasis on Holy Week‌beginning with Palm Sunday and culminating on Easter Sunday! We would like to help as you walk through these eight days this year by providing a devotional guide. The guide is from Desiring God Ministries and authored by John Piper. It includes a biblical and devotional reading each day that will help you to freshly encounter the good news, The Gospel of Jesus Christ! May the Lord use our time in the Word and prayer this Holy Week to draw us closer to Himself and emboldened to share this good news with eternal impact! The booklets will be made available at the locations where Connect Magazines are found. Please pick one up prior to or on Palm Sunday and join together with others in walking through the devotional this Holy Week. DEVOTIONAL READINGS FOR HOLY WEEK FROM JOHN PIPER 12 | Connect Magazine
