As summer draws near, I hope you have time to get away and do some different things this year. Leigh and I are looking forward to freshman orientation for Anna, my 40th high school reunion, and our 25th wedding anniversary, but we’re also looking forward to getting back in the fall and beginning a new season of ministry and service to our Lord. Here are some of the things that will be happening around First Baptist Church this summer: ⇒ A parenting seminar will be held June 5-6. You can find more info from Cheryl Goss and Wesley Dunn. ⇒ A Columbus, Ohio mission trip led by Bob Farmer, Will Smith, and Wesley Dunn, June 10-14. ⇒ Judy Miller will be speaking in both morning worship services, June 14. ⇒ World Changers, June 16-19. ⇒ Youth Senior Trip, June 16-19. ⇒ Vacation Bible School, June 22-26, If you would like to work, contact Suzie Horner or Cheryl Goss. ⇒ Youth Camp, June 28- July 3. ⇒ iPlay Soccer Camp, July 7-9. A great opportunity to reach unchurched families. If you would like to help, contact Nathan Scott. ⇒ A mission trip to Seattle, Washington led by Nathan Scott, July 18-25. ⇒ Children’s Camp, Jonathan Creek, July 19-22, Contact Suzie Horner. ⇒ A mission trip to Boston, Massachusetts led by Will Smith, July 25- August 1. Promotion Sunday is August 9. That will mark the beginning of our new year of ministry. There’s one thing about summer we have to be cautious about: It’s the fact that people’s lives and needs don’t change because it’s summertime. People still need to know the Lord and experience His redeeming touch.

Let’s make this summer a time to honor Christ by giving Him our best.

Lisa and Annie Johnson are members of FBC and have partnered together as mother and daughter to be on mission. Describe your ministry involvement over the past few summers.

L

: I love teaching the Kindergarten Sunday School class and have done this for several years. I have helped at the BBQ festival, assisted with soccer camp, and gone on the Seattle mission trip twice. I have also connected with neighbors by mowing lawns, preparing food, and even pet sitting. In past summers I was part of the VBS team that led the crafts.

A

: Each summer I return to VBS as a youth worker. I serve at the BBQ Festival, helping where the church needs me. I help coach at our iPlay soccer camp. Also, the past two summers I have gone on the Seattle Mission trip. Why have you taken advantage of these opportunities to serve?

L

: I was asked to help out since I had children participating in these programs. I discovered how joyful it is serving children and their families. I also think it is important for

our children to see us serving in these ministries. We lead by example. We all share in this responsibility. If I can demonstrate my love for others through service, perhaps they will get to know Jesus or grow in their faith. This has also been an opportunity for me to deepen my faith and study God's word. These opportunities have provided special times for my daughter and I. We study, pray, learn, play, and serve together. I treasure these opportunities we have shared.

A

What are some examples of sacrifices you have had to make in order to be on mission?

L

: The sacrifices I had to make are not tangible ones. The greatest sacrifice was letting God take control. I had to trust that my family would survive without me.

A

How have you seen God @ Work in your own life over the last few summers?

: I sacrificed by not working at my job. I had to miss a week of band camp for both Seattle mission trips. This summer I am going to Boston and had to give up band. I was told if I missed a week of band camp I could not march. I had to choose between high school band and the mission trip. This is a big sacrifice, but I feel it is more important for me to serve in missions.

L

What plans do you have this year to “Not Waste Your Summer”?

: It helps me to focus on Christ. I get to meet other people and hang out with them, and do fun things while traveling to new places.

: I have been amazed by the small things that jump out to let me know this is what I am to do or where I need to be. It has all been God-driven. I am more aware of elevating God and less of me. I am a changed person. When I serve it isn't so much about the actual job or work, instead it is about the connections we make while serving. These connections may help lead someone to Christ.

A

: The summer opportunities strengthen my Christian faith. It has been a shock to see so many kids that do not know Jesus. So now I am open about my faith and hope others can know about Jesus. I am more aware of God's presence. How have you seen God @ Work in the lives of others over the last few summers?

L

: Working side by side with fellow church members while on a mission trip builds this forever connection with them. I truly believe our mutual love and service makes us stronger as a church body. We have this shared experience which makes us more committed not only to each other, but also to our church, missions, and God. Serving in our church or on a mission trip transforms our lives. It is not a one-time experience. It becomes a lifetime of joyful Spirit-filled experiences.

A

: When I went back to Seattle I was surprised how many kids remembered me and were happy to see me. I think some of them will become believers. They listened to our message and prayed with us even if they had never heard of Jesus.

L

: I am very excited about the Boston mission trip. My daughter and I will serve together. And of course I will be at Sunday School leading our children toward Jesus.

A

: I already spent the day helping at the BBQ Festival. I have committed to Vacation Bible School, Youth church camp, and the Boston mission trip with my mom. How would you encourage others to “Not Waste Your Summer”?

L

: Build relationships with your neighbors. Help them out. Mow a lawn. Pray for them. You will know what to do. I encourage parents to volunteer as a Sunday School teacher or helper, help with Vacation Bible School, etc. As parents, we desire godly children. Your children will draw even closer to God by seeing you serve in these roles. Go as a family on a mission trip and make it an annual experience. Help teach the kids in your neighborhood about Jesus. I have brought home the VBS crafts in the past and taught the lessons with our neighborhood children. They were so excited!

A

: I would encourage others, especially the youth, to always look for ways to serve, whether at church or elsewhere. At church, it could be through VBS, iPlay soccer camp, or a mission trip. Get creative. One summer we had a yard sale and the money went for a good cause. You don't have to go out of town to help others.

We can make the most of this summer by continuing to do one of the things I believe we do well…making visitors feel welcome. Summertime is when most people relocate their place of residence; specifically, the end of June through the end of August, as folks want to be settled before school begins. Should someone new to Owensboro decide to visit First Baptist, we must make the most of the opportunity! I once visited a church to experience worship as a part of the congregation. It was good for this worship leader to simply be a part of a group and let someone else lead in a rich worship experience. What happened prior to worship caught me by surprise. Somehow, I made it from my car to my seat in the sanctuary without one person welcoming me as a visitor to their church. I made eye contact with a couple of people, nodding a hello as folks often do, but no one spoke to me or shook my hand. This particular church had a welcome time during the service, so it wasn’t until then that a few people approached me, shook my hand and asked my name. But no one asked if I was visiting or if I was a member of a church anywhere. Had I been a non-believer, a great opportunity would have been missed. I confess that my first thoughts were a bit critical of the church. I was seeing a speck in this particular congregation’s collective eye, so to speak, and thought the church was missing the mark when it came to making visitors feel welcome. But in a matter of seconds, my thoughts turned away from the church I was visiting. I asked myself, “How do visitors feel when they visit my church family?” Then, more to the point, “How well do I make visitors to our church feel welcome?” Isn’t it interesting how the Holy Spirit will often turn our critical thoughts of others back onto ourselves? I realized that night how just one person can make all the difference. How do you respond when you see someone who might be a visitor? Do you approach them, or do you leave the welcoming to others? It feels safer to wait until after worship or Sunday School to greet someone, but by then it may be too late. “First time visitors notice a lot within the first four to eight minutes of their visit. From what happens in the parking lot to the pews, the first impression can shape a visitor’s feeling about a church visit. Although worship experiences may vary by faith tradition, some of the biggest reasons first-time visitors may not come back relies on what happens in those early moments” (Lynette Hawkins, “15 Reasons Why First-Time Guests May Not Return”). The next time you see unfamiliar faces in our church, quickly greet them! You may be the person God is sending to provide a warm welcome.

Summer Reading Recommendations

The summer months provide some unique reading opportunities that we would all be wise to take advantage of: vacation, in the midst of traveling, resting on the back patio at the end of the day, listening to an audio book while mowing, relaxing at one of the beautiful parks in our community, reading with your family. This list is not exhaustive, but it gives you an idea of occasions for reading. Some of you may be browsing through this page thinking: Well, I don’t read, so this doesn’t apply to me. Let me encourage you to take the challenge to read this summer. Why? We know that the Lord uses the power of the Spirit working through the Bible to bring about change in the lives of believers. That alone should warrant a turning to His Word. In addition to that, reading other biblically grounded literature can help to challenge and encourage believers in the journey of faith. With all of that said, I want to recommend a few items for your summer reading. Don’t waste these great opportunities over the next few months! The Bible (God) As beneficial as other Christian reading may be, it should never replace our biblical reading. Here is the challenge for the summer: If there is a book or section of the Bible that you have never read, do it! Maybe you have never braved reading through the Major Prophets…do it! Take it on as the summer goal! Maybe you haven’t read much of the Bible at all…do it! Begin reading this summer. You might not read the rest of the Bible, but you can get started! George Müller: Delighted in God (Roger Steer) Biographies can be extremely edifying in the Christian walk. This one on George Müller is no different. During the 1800’s, Müller built and operated five large orphanages in Bristol, England. Over his lifetime, this ministry cared for over 10,000 orphans. He was not a wealthy man and did not ask for a penny from anyone to help. So how did he

make this happen? Prayer to God. Yep, you read that right. Prayer! If you want to be challenged and encouraged in the area of prayer, read this biography…not to see the greatness of Müller, but the greatness of our faithful God! The Pilgrim’s Progress (John Bunyan) If you love a good story, you will love this classic narrative! This book was written in 1678 and has been in continuous print since the first publishing. Let that sink in a little bit. That is an amazing accomplishment for a book. It has been one of the most well-read English books in history, maybe the most read outside of the Bible. Bunyan tells the story of Christian (main character) and through the telling of the story gives narrative form of doctrine from the Bible and the Christian life. It is a brilliant work and a classic. If you have not read it, I challenge you to do so. Please know that it was originally written in Old English, so we would all find it quite unique to read it in that form. There are newer translations that bring the text into the modern English form, which is what I would recommend, especially if reading it with children. Crossway has published a modernized, yet faithful version of this book! 40 Questions About Interpreting the Bible (Robert. L. Plummer) How did we get the Bible we have today? Why is it organized that way? Why weren’t some other books included? Are there any errors in the Bible? What type of Bible should I use? What principles should I use when reading and interpreting the Bible? Can a text have more than one meaning? Do all the commands of the Bible apply today? Why are there so many disagreements on what the Bible means? Have you ever had any of these questions? Have you ever had trouble articulating answers to the questions when people ask? Plummer does an excellent job of answering these and many more questions in a simple and straightforward format!

died to self and are living for Christ, every season of our life is His! We are called to take advantage of the opportunities that present themselves in the summer and lean into Christ and His work before us. The days are longer and neighbors are outside more…what a wonderful opportunity to “Build Bridges. Connect to Christ.” (Sound familiar?) Mission trips are most conducive to the summer months for scheduling with our church…what a wonderful opportunity to be on mission with Christ and others!

I could go on for quite some time with specific examples of ways to take advantage of the summer for Christ. Instead, I want to encourage you with a passage that has encouraged me in this area. Ephesians 5:15-16 says, “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.” Wow! The truth is pretty clear. We are called to wisely steward the days and time that God gives us, including the summer months! Let’s not waste our summer! Let’s not look back and reflect that we didn’t really pursue after Christ and His mission, ultimately spending it in an unwise way.

Make

“Kingdom of God” investments this summer. Do this on your own with pursuing personal discipleship and disciple-making. Do this with other believers in the church by pursuing opportunities at and through First Baptist. Let’s walk wisely together this summer and seek to expand and enhance His kingdom!

“Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.”

Be on Mission And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.” Mark 16:15 We are all preparing for a busy summer, so as we do, pray this verse daily over your family. This verse is a command that we, as followers, share the Word of God. This passage says go into all the world, which means wherever you are; store, vacation, pool, etc….share His wonderful Word. Live out His command and be on mission daily to grow His kingdom. This can be done through your words or actions, so remember to be bold in your walk and share the good news to all.

And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” Luke 10:2

HOW NOT TO WASTE YOUR’S AND YOUR CHILD’S SUMMER Summer will be especially short this year, so here are some ideas that will hopefully help you as you plan to spend some quality time with your children, while also teaching them to serve others and grow spiritually.

Grill‘n’Fill (New Kindergarteners Meet Sparky) August 12

Awana - begins August 19 for K - 5th

Have a set time each day that you pray together and stick with it no matter how busy you are. Do a project each week that will teach your children to serve, such as: make cards to take to the Veteran’s Clinic, serve at New Life one night, go to a shut-in’s house and sing or take them cards, purchase items and take them to Oasis, CareNet or the Help Office. Devote one day a week to just one of your children. Make a special memory, because time flies by quickly. If you go on vacation and you don’t feel comfortable attending a different church, have your own family church service. Each family member could be responsible for an aspect of worship, such as songs, preaching, praying, etc. Use these ideas to teach your children that being together as a family and serving is a blessing. Works do not gain us favor with God, but we can let others know that we love God and He loves them.

Did you know…? Oneida Baptist Institute students come from the local community, all over Kentucky, across the United States, and around the world. While most Christian schools accept only Christian students or young people from Christian families, OBI gladly accepts non-Christian teens and those from other world religions. Oneida has a 200-acre farm and a full agriculture program. Nearly 67% of OBI’s funding comes from churches, other groups, and individuals. Oneida Baptist Institute averages an 11:1 student/teacher ratio. OBI offers a wide range of co-curricular options and elective courses. Oneida has a student work program in which teenagers do jobs such as cleaning classrooms and offices, working in the dining hall, serving in the campus grill, mowing grass, working on the farm, and more. At Oneida Baptist Institute, students attend chapel each school day and worship twice on Sundays. What is Oneida Baptist Institute? OBI is a Christian boarding school for young people in grades 6-12. It was founded in 1899, and has been ministering to teenagers for 116 years.

similar to seasickness. The daily shaking has also induced a heightened state of fear across the county. Many are still sleeping outside because they fear another earthquake could strike at any moment. Others are sleeping outside because the structural integrity of their home has been compromised and they haven’t been able to secure a new living arrangement. The people of Nepal have been on an emotional roller coaster; they are physically, emotionally and mentally exhausted. It may sound simple, but many are just in need of a good night's sleep.

Pray for missionaries. Ask that they would know how to love and encourage people through this really challenging, scary, and uncertain time. Pray for direction and discernment for missionaries. Many have left to escape the harsh, post-earthquake reality that Nepal is currently in and to regroup with team members and leadership to determine the best plan of action for moving forward in response. Several missionaries have stayed and have struggled under an uncoordinated, disjointed response and relief effort. The communication on the ground has been extremely difficult making it hard to know who is going where and doing what. Pray for a coordinated effort to reach those affected. Many of those who are in need are difficult to reach in the best of circumstances, but now, the difficulty of getting to those people in need has been compounded. For example, the Himalayan peoples of the Rasuwa and Langtang districts have had their villages destroyed. The reconstruction process has been severely limited in these areas due to restricted access. So far, it’s been limited to only rationed food and tarp distribution, which has allowed people to craft makeshift shanties to live in.

Pray for the local church. Pray that they would be a beacon of hope in this seemingly insurmountable sea of distress. Pray for opportunities for Nepali and Tibetan Christians to share the hope that they have as Christians even in the face of death. Pray for a selfless passion to be loving one another and their non-believing neighbors, friends, and family members in this time of great need.

Pray for the people of Nepal to be drawn closer to Jesus. You can help! Text BGR to 80888 to donate $10 or visit gobgr.org/donate/paypal.
