Just a Few Things on my Mind… Thanks to each of you for your involvement in the process of moving forward with our building project. It is the result of many hours of meetings, prayer, strategy, and a whole lot of hard work. I am so grateful to you and to the Lord for what He will accomplish through you. The actual construction/demolition will begin around June 1, and we have been told it will take fourteen months to complete. Our staff has done an incredible job getting us prepared. Let me brag on them a little. Bob Farmer has done an excellent job of working with the PERA committee, the Finance Committee, RBS design, and many other groups. Wesley Dunn has been the main person responsible for moving our Sunday School classes so we can stay on campus. He has balanced family life, graduation from seminary (YEA!!!!), a missed softball to the right side of his face, and his normal workload in order to find places for all our classes. Brent Phillips organized and staffed our participation in the BBQ Festival and he did an incredible job. He represented FBC well and all the time thinking about an upcoming wedding!!! Suzie Horner has been hard at work making plans and organizing one of the most important ministries in our church, VBS, which begins June 13. If you haven’t registered, there is still time by going to our website now at www.fbcowb.org! Will Smith was responsible for our senior graduation service, which was the same day as our special business meeting. He also hosted a wonderful senior breakfast during the Sunday school hour for the seniors and their parents, plus he preached at the Elevate worship hour. And oh yeah, he has been in Asia for ten days with a group on mission serving alongside the Wellmans. Derry Billingsley is continuing to provide us with some of the best worship experiences around. He has been moving the choir so they can continue singing. He has also moved the orchestra so they can continue practicing for their time in upcoming worship dates. Our Administrative staff! Judi West, she has been heavily involved in working, planning, and making our move with the church offices. The most important thing she does is keep me on task!

Michele Burton has also been involved in the moving of our offices and at the same time has maintained our Sunday School records and class curriculum needs. Michele has also been responsible for our “Connect” magazine, but will be transitioning to other responsibilities after June. Maeghan Adams has, like the others, been involved in the move of our offices to the West Chapel. She does a great deal of work with our social media such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc. as well as helping in the music area. Susan Dant has been our go-to staff at the CLC for some time and she takes care of so many things associated with that building. She has transitioned over to the main office building and we are happy. Barbara Wright continues to make sure we are doing it right financially. She can also be found in the office area (West Chapel). Our Maintenance team! Each of these have been very cordial to work with during the cleaning out of the 1920’s building, even though it has been very stressful at times. Dale Beavin is the head of our team! The others that make up our team with Dale are James Thomas (JT), Linda Rodriguez, and the newest member, Bryce Garrett. They keep our building functioning and clean. God has put together a wonderful staff of people from all walks of life, backgrounds, and different personalities. Somehow in the providence of God, He makes it work and I am privileged to serve alongside some of the finest people I know. What I said about them above is just a microcosm of what they do. They go above and beyond their job descriptions to see ministry is done. As the apostle Paul said to his Philippian brothers/sisters, “I thank God upon every remembrance of you”! Last but not least is Julie Dunn. Julie has stepped in to help make sure our Preschool area is staffed and running well. She is going to be our Interim Preschool Director and I am thankful for Julie.

"...grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ." - 2 Peter 3:18

Sunday School Class Directory All Classes begin at 9:45 am

In Matthew 22:37-39, Jesus Christ expressed the greatest of all commandments, calling us to "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself." Sunday School classes at FBC provide a great opportunity to pursue this calling. We meet each week to study the Bible so that we can "grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ." (2 Peter 3:18) We know that as our understanding of God and His Word grows, so will our desire to worship and serve Him, which will ultimately lead to

D.L. Moody tells the following story on forgiving others in his book, Prevailing Prayer: “I remember one town that Mr. Sankey and myself visited. For a week it seemed as if we were beating the air; there was no power in the meetings. At last, one day, I said that perhaps there was someone cultivating the unforgiving spirit. The chairman of our committee, who was sitting next to me, got up and left the meeting right in view of the audience. The arrow had hit the mark, and gone home to the heart of the

Is there someone you need to forgive? God wants us to forgive as we have been forgiven. Doing so is not only an act of love, but enables us to find God’s will for us.

Summer Reading Recommendations

Growing Up: How To Be A Disciple Who Makes Disciples - Robby Gallaty "Discipleship" is a word that has been used frequently in our congregation over the last several months at FBC. And...as you can imagine...this Minister of Discipleship desires that it continues to be a topic of discussion in the days ahead. One of the ways that we can grow in disciple-making is to read biblically-grounded resources on not only the foundation of the task, but also the practical (how-to) of the task. Gallaty does both of these in this book. He spends some time setting the biblical foundation, but honestly, he spends more time speaking to the practical aspects of doing discipleship. He doesn't shortchange the biblical foundation part, but references and points his readers to other books that have done this already. If you are asking yourself what disciple-making looks like, this book will be a great help in your pursuit of the Great Commission. Praying The Bible - Donald S. Whitney About five years ago I was introduced to Don Whitney as I sat in his Personal Spiritual Disciplines class at Southern Seminary. One of the most influential things he did in that class was to expose and train us in using the Scriptures as a guide for our prayer life. Without a doubt, this has had the greatest impact on my prayer life throughout my Christian walk. Whitney has traveled extensively over the years teaching and modeling this to congregations. Crossway wisely decided to put the contents of his lectures and practices in a book. Are you lacking a freshness to your prayers? Are you tired of saying the "same ol' things about the same ol' things" in your prayer life? Take the time and read this short book and find the joy in faithfully praying God's Word back to Him. Steve Gaines, pastor of Bellevue Baptist Church near Memphis, had this to say about praying Scripture: "If you are praying God's Word, you are praying God's will." Let's grow in our prayer life and pray God's will and not our own!

Unpacking Forgiveness: Biblical Answers For Complex Questions And Deep Wounds - Chris Brauns Sin is present in each and every relationship that we have in this world...this is just a fact that results from the fall of man in Genesis 3. This means that we are going to be harmed, hurt, and wounded by someone at some point in our lives. No matter the magnitude of the sin against us, it hurts. So what are we to do? We are familiar with the command to forgive, but just how do I do this? What does is practically look like to forgive? When and how should I do it? Beyond that, why should I forgive? Many times, we hear advice from many sides telling us what to do in forgiveness, but here is what I appreciate about Brauns; he turns to the Word of God for these answers! Fight against the bitterness of an unwillingness to forgive and walk with Braun through a biblical understanding of forgiveness. When Sinners Say "I Do": Discovering The Power Of The Gospel For Marriage - Dave Harvey Whether engaged or married for forty years, this book is helpful. Often, expectations in marriage of the other person are much higher than warranted. Guess what...you are going to be or are already married to a sinner. They will sin against you and others, they will not meet up to your lofty standards...to be honest, more than likely, they won't meet up to their own standards. They (AND you) are a sinner. So what help, what hope do we have in this situation? The Gospel of Jesus Christ! Harvey does a wonderful job of explaining the gospel and its application to marriage. You would be wise to read this biblical treatment of marriage...for your own marriage and the sake of the marriages surrounding you! If you take the opportunity to read one of these books (or even part), please let me know. These books have had a tremendous impact on my Christian life, and I would love to hear of the impact they have on yours!

The year was 1966. I was convinced the study of history was to be my lifelong calling. I completed my second semester of college and everything changed. That semester I invested a significant amount of time sleeping through Ancient History Class. The next semester history was traded for economics and financial management. Though I abandoned the pursuit of a college major in history, I believe the study of history adds significance to our lives. History presupposes that today is a product of yesterday. We can't fully appreciate where we are without knowing what came into the present from the past. I recently pulled from my bookshelf a copy of Owensboro's First Church, by Wendell H. Rone, Sr. I was drawn to the words of Dr. David A. Nelson.

So we must not get tired of doing good, for we will reap at the proper time if we don’t give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, we must work for the good to all, especially for those who belong to the household of faith. Galatians 6:9-10 (HCSB) I am sure of this, that He who started a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. Philippians 1:6 (HCSB)

Dr. Nelson remarked: "Dr. Jess Moody succeeded Dr. Humphreys as pastor in 1956. This vigorous and dynamic preacher left his impact on the church. We could not sum up all of his contributions but at the top of the list must stand the new Educational Building entered at the beginning of 1962...that building helped seal the commitment to downtown Owensboro and provide a vehicle for service for the future. This is a church with a glorious heritage...the history of this church is almost a roll call of the heroes of the Faith. To read about and re-live the past years is a humbling experience. But what of the future? I believe First Baptist Church has many great years of service left. During the year of 1983, the Church entered into a Capital Funds Campaign called Building For The Future... to raise pledges to finance a new Christian Life Center. During this campaign, our members pledged $1,118,000.00 toward the building to be paid over a three-year period. As we go to press for the publication of this history, our members have contributed $608,492.20 toward the building. The building is now well along toward construction and should be ready for use in early fall of 1985. I believe it is indeed Building For The Future. It says that the days of the downtown church are not over. It says that we will do more than ever before to reach our city for Christ. Dr. George W. Truett once used a phrase ‘Hats off to the past, Coats off to the future.’ Our future depends both upon the promises of God and our faithfulness to proclaim the Gospel. May there be another day and another generation which one hundred and fifty years from now (if the Lord tarries) will write of what God has done in the intervening years!" Dr. Nelson's words aptly apply to Connect For Future Generations. Today we certainly can echo those sentiments of "Hats off to the past" as we roll up our sleeves and build for the next generation. Wednesday Summer Schedule

Preparation for the renovation project has required much work, specifically much physical work in emptying out the old part of the building. A large portion of that work was done behind the scenes by the FBC Maintenance Team. In addition, our Office Manager, Administrative Assistants, and Financial Supervisor have put forth great effort in completing the transition as well. The FBC staff and congregation want to say 'Thank You' for your diligent work and flexibility over the last month! You are much appreciated!
