The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 2 Corinthians9:6-7

As I write these words we are in the early stages of budget preparation. We are blessed to have in place a great system of checks and balances for our church. We have 12 church members who make up the finance committee. The committee is a mix of women and men from different generations. They meet every month and monitor closely the expenses, income, and general health of our church from a financial point of view. Bob Farmer, Church Administrator, Barbara Wright, financial secretary, and I meet with this committee. I have every bit of confidence and trust in this group of people. I appreciate the different skill sets each of them brings to the table. We have bankers, accountants, insurance agents, homemakers, lawyers, and business people of all kinds. We are blessed to have a group of people keeping watch over the stewardship of First Baptist Church. This week they will begin the laborious process of putting together our 2015 Faith Budget for First Baptist Church. Why am I sharing this with you? I have several reasons. First, I want to say THANKS to all of you who have contributed to our budget this year. Whether it was large or small, every gift is needed and very much appreciated. In my nine years as pastor you have been very generous and faithful to First Baptist Church and for that I am grateful to God! Secondly, I want to ask that you spend some time praying for this committee as they complete their work. They need wisdom, discernment and guidance from the Lord as they determine next year’s budget. At the present time we are behind in our 2014 budget, which is not unusual for us. Our 2014 budget is 2,527,601.00. This is certainly within reach for our congregation. Thirdly, pray for the Personnel Committee and our ministerial staff as they prepare to present their budgets to the Finance Committee. The Personnel Committee is a large part of our budget, as it is in most churches. The ministerial staff has been very conscientious about spending and will be wise in putting together their ministry budgets for 2015. Fourthly, I want to issue a challenge to all of us. We will enter a year with the potential of approaching a building program. The PERA Committee has been diligently looking at the “1920’s” building for a total renovation with the possibility of connecting the CLC with the main building.
You will receive Information about their recommendation in the months ahead. This will be the first construction we have done since my time as your pastor if we vote to move forward. The building in question is in need of some attention. Every member of First Baptist Church will be important to this project. Will you begin praying that God will speak to our church body concerning our needs and what He would have us do as part of this family? Fifthly, I want to challenge those who have not been consistent tithers to make 2015 the year you live by faith in your finances. The bible speaks of a “tithe” being 10 percent of our resources. The Bible also tells us that 100% of all we have is God’s! Psalm 24:1 says “The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it”. Will you accept the challenge to so order your life financially where God is glorified? One of my favorite verses in the Old Testament has become 1 Samuel 2:30 where God says, “Those who honor “Test me in this, me I will honor”. Let’s says the LORD honor the Lord in all areas of our Almighty, and see lives! if I will not throw open
the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have enough room for it.” Malachi 3:10
Honored to be your Pastor
Give a brief description of your history and your relationship with FBC. MW - In early 1962 Grover and I were living in Lynchburg, Virginia, where he was serving as Minister of Music, and I as organist, at West Lynchburg Baptist Church. In late winter of that year, we were contacted by First Baptist Church, Owensboro, which at that time was seeking a Minister of Music. Both of us were Georgetown College graduates and the thought of returning to Kentucky and serving in this great church was appealing to us. Though a move to Owensboro seemed so right, we diligently prayed through this process. We were acquainted with the pastor, Dr. David Nelson Grover had served with him in a revival in Northern Kentucky. We had several college friends who were members of First Baptist, and others who lived in this area of the state. God led Grover to accept the call as Minister of Music and I was hired as Church Pianist and Assistant Organist. Our family (Linda, age 6 and Ginny, age 3) made the move to Owensboro in late April of that year. A close college friend of ours, Jo McCaslin, was church organist at that time. In August of 1963 she moved out of the city and I was asked to take her place as FBC Organist. In the late 1980’s, our daughter Linda joined the music staff as church pianist after the resignations of Nancy Kennedy and Nan McSwain. She served in this position (in addition to directing The Sanctuary Ringers until the spring of 2009, when
her rapidly declining health forced her retirement). When Mark Slaughter became our Minister of Music in 1995 there was no regular organist in place and he asked me to return to the organ bench. I gladly accepted and served until my 2nd retirement January 1, 2010. Describe FBC during your early years of ministry and changes you have seen since then. GW - We were excited and grateful that God led us to a church that was accustomed to and supportive of full-time music leadership. With a strong, well-established adult choir as cornerstone, our efforts were focused on strengthening and expanding the children's and youth choir ministries. The rising popularity of “folk music” gave our young people opportunities for worship leadership and outreach. Our youth choir was the first in Owensboro to present Celebrate Life!, the groundbreaking Southern Baptist musical that set the standard for the flood of contemporary Christian music/dramas that were written for children, youth, and adult choirs. How have you seen God at Work through the years in your relationships with the people of this church? MW - The first thing that comes to my mind is the ministries of Dr. Nelson, Clarence Nemitz, and Grover. Together these men served 80 plus years at FBC. This brought a spirit of continuity to our
church staff and also a feeling of mutual appreciation between staff and congregation, which still exists today. I love my church family and have always felt their support and encouragement. When your ministry touches so many families, through worship services, weddings, funerals, choir programs and mission trips, a life-long bond becomes one of God’s richest blessings.
first full-time Minister of Music, Loren R. Williams (1948-1950) was on the SBC editorial staff that produced this hymnal. We became good friends when he led our Spring Revival Meeting here in April of 1966, and later during Ridgecrest Music Week conferences.
...the church’s
rection of Mark Slaughter, (our Minister of Music at that time), the Church Choir Mission Trip to Hong Kong, guest artist concerts, First Christmas programs, to name a few. In what ways do you pray for First Baptist? MW - I pray that the emphasis on Missions will remain strong and that our congregation will be burdened for the lost people around us.
outreach ministries are indeed influenced by the depth of its worship experiences. How have you seen God at Work through music and worship over the years at FBC? What impact have music and worship had on the lives of people? MW - As worship leaders, it was always our intent that the congregation would experience God’s presence when meeting together corporately. During those years when I was church organist, I took very seriously my role to be that of one who enhances true worship, coming to the instrument prepared, not drawing attention to myself, but through music, offering my praise and thanksgiving to God. My prayer was that God would prompt the worshiper in the pew to respond “in spirit and in truth”, as Jesus said in John 4:24. Give a description of worship at this church when you arrived. GW - As we began our ministry here in 1962, we found the general format of the worship services similar to the churches in which we had grown up, as well as the two churches we had served in Georgia and Virginia since 1955. Great praise and devotional hymns, old and new gospel songs were sung from the Baptist Hymnal (1956 edition). Incidentally, FBC Owensboro’s
How has the Lord grown you in the faith during your years here? MW - Our faith is strong and God’s promises are sure. One of my favorite scripture verses is Isaiah 41, verse 10. “So do not fear, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand”. In 1980 we faced our daughter Linda’s need for a kidney transplant. After extensive testing I was the only acceptable donor in our family. The successful transplant took place on September 11, 1980 at Jewish Hospital in Louisville. From then on, (even past “9/11”) that date is celebrated as Kidney Day in our family. Our faith, trust, and dependence on the Lord sustained us through Linda’s death in early November of 2009, our darkest hours. What are some of the memorable worship experiences that come to mind for you over the last fifty years at FBC? MW - This is a hard question to answer - there have been so many! In recent years, our participation in annual performances of the Owensboro Easter Pageant, under the di-
GW - I will add to Martha’s. My constant prayer for our congregation is to worship God “in spirit and in truth”, and as the apostle Paul urges in Romans 12:1, “as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God this is your spiritual act of worship”. I believe all of the church’s outreach ministries are indeed influenced by the depth of its worship experiences. In what ways can members of First Baptist Church pray for you? MW - Aging brings health issues and problems. “The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak”. Pray that we will not grow weary, but that we will love and serve Christ as best we can until He calls us home. The hymn writer has expressed this better than I can. “What a day that will be when my Jesus I shall see, And I look upon His face, the One who saved me by His grace! When He takes me by the hand, and leads me through the Promised Land, What a day, glorious day that will be!” MW - Martha Waller GW - Grover Waller Full video of the interview is available on our website fbcowb.org/godatwork/.

Sabbatical Report September During the month of September I was able to participate in a meeting for adults in life’s second half. It was an amazing meeting with cutting-edge information on the needs and interests of older adults. In conjunction with this meeting, a group called CASA met to discuss ministries with older adults. CASA stands for Christian Association Serving Adults. Their main objective is to inspire, equip, and mobilize the church for ministry to and through adults in life’s second half. There are some incredible opportunities to reach older adults as the baby boomers move into the 55-above age group. We had round table discussions on ideas and opportunities to minister to and engage older adults. We were also able to discuss the hot topics of health care as well as caring for people who are in different stages of dementia. It was a very informative meeting as we shared ideas with other like-minded people. I want to personally thank the church for the opportunity to use this time for study and relaxation. “Sabbaticals” are relatively new to the church but I believe it is extremely beneficial to the church. It not only allows the ministerial staff some time away from the office, but it also requires there to be some time for study. Thank you for providing this important benefit.
PERA Committee The PERA Committee continues to work with RBS architect firm to develop a master plan for the renovation of the 1920’s building and possibly new construction. There are still some investigative issues that we must resolve before we bring a full report to the church. We are hoping to have a report to the church no later than the month of November. Pray for this committee as they seek the will of God in this matter.
State Park Trip Blue Licks State Park October 27-29, 2014 Our state park trip this year is to Blue Licks State Park in Mount Olivet, Kentucky. The state park trip is always one of the highlights of the year as we try to visit a different state park each year. The cost is $159.00 per person which includes lodging, six meals, transportation and planned activities. We will also visit Rosemary Clooney’s home in Augusta, Kentucky. We hope you will make plans to join us for this great time of fellowship!

SEMINARY STUDIES Graciously, many of you have asked how my seminary studies are going, and I just want to provide a brief word of my progress in that area. I am slowly but surely proceeding toward the Master of Divinity degree from Southern Seminary. I am currently taking a class on biblical counseling this semester, and at the conclusion of this class, I will only have four classes remaining. I want to personally thank you for your interest, support, and encouragement in this area of my life and ministry.
“The official news journal of the Kentucky Baptists” The arrival of the Connect Magazine meant that many of you stopped receiving The Western Recorder in the mail. In an attempt to still provide you with the opportunity to read this weekly paper, FBC has maintained a certain amount of subscriptions to be delivered to the church. These are made available each week at the distribution table located on the north side of the sanctuary, next to the choir room. This publication contains many important articles related to the happenings of both the KBC and the SBC. Please take the opportunity to pick one of these up and stay informed on what is going on with Kentucky and Southern Baptists.

with passion, intention, commitment, and purpose. Does this describe how you think about and live out stewardship? It is likely that most of us find ourselves in one of two scenarios when it comes to not deciding in our heart. First, we just don’t recognize the responsibility to decide in such a way. Be honest with yourself, have you decided in your heart beforehand what you will give to the Lord this week, this month, or this year? Did you even realize that such a decision was to be made with your heart? Secondly, we are just too busy or have budgets that are too strapped. A commitment made with our hearts is one we intend to keep and if the money gets tight in our home, we don’t like to think that we might have “overcommitted” ourselves. As our church approaches the end of the financial year, the beginning of a new budget, and the possibility of a new building project, are you willing to be obedient in deciding with your heart? Are you willing to take the time and energy to seek out the Lord’s guidance in personal stewardship with your heart?

In Matthew 16, Jesus promises to build His Church on the faithful profession and declaration of His work and His word. At Paramount Church we are enjoying the fruit of His faithful promise. And we are grateful to the Lord for churches like FBC Owensboro for partnering with us. By the grace of God through generous partners like you, our little church is growing.
Growing in Number On the surface, our growth is most obvious through the increased numbers of people actively involved in our church plant. We recently completed another round of our 4-week Meaningful Membership Class, and enjoyed having thirteen people complete the class and move toward membership. This may not sound like a lot, but it is! And we are grateful for this growth. At this point, our Sunday morning ministry averages a little over 60 souls and we are sowing and praying for more people who need to belong to Christ or a healthy local church. In addition, we are thrilled to see growth among our Community Groups. One week ago, we launched a third group in nearby Gahanna; and we have plans to see two more groups start over the next year.
Growing in Depth All of this talk of numerical growth is certainly exciting, but the biggest concern is growing our church deep. We have believed and trusted God that as we prioritize growing deep, God will be faithful to grow us wide. Over recent months we have seen a number of evidences of our church’s increasing maturity. Our members are thriving on the gospel more and more and our visitors are being challenged to consider the importance of sanctification through the local church. Furthermore, the biblical counseling and discipleship ministries of our church are improving little by little. Opportunities for leaders to sow the gospel through our Christ-centered counseling ministry are increasing. We also recently received a big answer to prayer. Our counseling and equipping ministry has been in need of space to meet with hurting people and train future leaders. A local business man donated the use of a sufficient

This space will be used for discipleship, evangelism, and strengthening our two pastors-in-training. Grateful.
Five Years Ahead Finally, we are very excited to report our current effort to complete a five-year ministry planning project as a church. Proverbs 16:9 teaches us, “The mind of man plans his way, But the LORD directs his steps.” As a church, the Lord has given us the privilege of planning our way, while He faithfully directs our steps. As a part of this exciting season of preparation for the next five years of Paramount Church, we have challenged our members to give generously of their time and attention. Under each of our four values (Gospel, Change, Community, and Mission), each member will list as many ideas they can think of for church-wide ministry over the next five-years. On September 14, Pastors Rush and Kevin will collect all the completed copies of this packet. We will compile all responses into a long list of ideas and dreams. Then all of these ideas will be given back out to the church, so each person might rank what he or she believes are the most important 20 suggestions. Then the final results will be organized and detailed in a short five-year ministry guide. The guide will contain detailed plans for ministry at Paramount; complete with descriptions, phases, and dates. Lord willing, when the five years is complete, the people of Paramount Church will rejoice over the many ways the Lord faithfully directed our steps through these plans. And then, we will repeat this process in preparation for the next five years! These are exciting days as we struggle along the new church trail. We desperately need more prayers, more help, more encouragement, and more support. Thank you, thank you, thank you to First Baptist Owensboro for your ongoing partnership in the Gospel!

“For I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat…” Matthew 25:35 NASB Hunger is no respecter of geography or ethnic group. It can be felt in an apartment in Eastern Europe, a cardboard shack in Central America, a tent in the Sahara, or a house in Kentucky. Southern Baptist missionaries and volunteers are offering nourishment for the body and soul. And every Southern Baptist can have a part in those ministries through gifts to the Global Hunger Relief Fund. 85% of gifts are used to help alleviate hunger overseas and 15% is used here in the United States. Small sacrifices and simple swaps can make a BIG difference! A cup of fancy coffee can cost $11 a week, but home-brewed joe costs around a dollar. The difference? $10 A meal out for a family of four can easily top $50, but a home-cooked meal for the same family can cost as little as $15. The difference? $35 A night out at the movies for a family of four can easily top $75, but an evening at home with a DVD can cost well under $10. The difference? $65
